Hi, Doug & Drummer Dudes / Dudettes! Is ARB filling in for Bronwyn tonight? The newsletter didn't mention that.

@That Guy
Yes yes yes yes, ARB is filling in for Bronwyn. The newsletter sender (who I know, personally) FUCKED up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Doug Schulkind:

The newsletter sender will send out a special announcement after the newsletter sender finishes his radio show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

Yusef playing an argol here. An Egyptian double-reeded instrument. Bass player Ernie Farrow is playing a rebab (Indonesian single-string instrument), and drummer Oliver Jackson is playing an earth-board.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Ken From Hyde Park:

Haha, no worries. Another chance for redemption next Friday.

Avatar 9:46am Stork:

Dougenkrantz!
How's you-seff today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

@Hugo
An all-Ogun show would be a miraculous thing to do. It would be torture editing it down to three hours, but that's why I get paid the big bucks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Maestro Stork!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Uncle Michael:

Labels?

Look for the union label, when you are buying a coat, dress, or blouse.

We work hard. But who's complaining?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Eastern and Middle Eastern modal strains are all throughout these late-'50s recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

The Drummer Stream is a union shop, Uncle Michael. Scabs beware!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am doctorjazz:

Hello Drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

Whazzup, doc?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Hugo:

I recall that Bryce did the entire Blue Notes for Mongezi cd in one go. There was about 20 minutes left of the show after that. Editing is overrated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

@Hugo
Yes indeed he did. Bless his heart. Bryce his heart.

does this tribute mean there's not gonna be a "free jazz" portion of the show? asking for someone else lol...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Alex In Illinois:

At least one of these Lateef numbers sounds very familiar. I don't mean Give the Drummer Radio familiar. I mean like it has been used as music for a movie or TV program or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am doctorjazz:

Loving the sounds-be taking the show on the road as I drive to have an EMG done (for those that don't know, this is the medical test equivalent of bamboo shoots under the fingernails, except they'll use my back...).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Hugo:

Yusef Lateef did the Kongsberg Jazz Festival back in 1968 with Kenny Drew, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Albert Heath. NRK recorded about 40 minutes of the concert. There's a link to the video which may work globally, but perhaps best to wait till after the show.

New owners of the commercial property where he has stood as local landmark for decades seem inclined to leave it be, while some Native Americans and area residents say it's a culturally inaccurate hodge-podge caricature that keeps stereotypes alive and ignores impacts and history.
The comments on a newspaper article about it today...are predictable and probably shouldn't have been sampled if I wanted a Friday free of ranty cranks and shut-tight outlooks.

It's retrospectively surprising to me that all this adventurous music was released on Impulse! and Atlantic. I don't believe this continued into the 70s much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

Occasionally, Atlantic producer Joel Dorn employed Yusef as a studio player on other people's sessions. Yusef performed under the pseudonym "Joe Gentle."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

THANK YOU to whoever dropped a mighty coin the pledge bucket!!!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

I had the honor of meeting and hanging with Joel Dorn. He once wrote, in the liners to a Yusef compilation he produced, that I was the world's foremost Yusef Lateef expert, etc. etc. A lovely though highly questionable honorific.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

Woo hoo, ARB's here! ARB's here!

Seven hours of Monk sound highly enticing. Hopefully there might be room for Monk's Casino. I've seen them live and I love the footwork of Rudi Mahall! If it had been on WKCR, you'd probably need several days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Doug Schulkind:

21-year-old guitarist Eric Gale here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Franco Twinkie:

Hugo, that is a hansom pole indeed. Once my girlfriend and I were in Vancouver. While she was sick in bed I went to the Totem Pole Museum at The University of British Columbia. WOW, What a collection! Recently she said she found a totem pole in her garage, and asked me if I wanted it. I was over at her house and forgot it on the front porch. The moment had passed I guess. Nothing more was said about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Little Danny:

Doug have you seen Lars Bjorn's book about jazz in Detroit? Some great Lateef tidbits (and '50s nightclub photos of his group)
  11:09am Mr C:

Rahssan Roland Kirk's Atlantic records from that period, produced by Joel, had a similar vibe, groove and occasional wackiness as Yusef's..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Uncle Michael:

Hey, Mr. C...I saw where Marcus King made the cut for the Tedeschi/Trucks Beacon run. Very cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am StringOFperils:

Those totem poles are sacred objects. They need to stay put.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Franco Twinkie:

SoP, the one Michele found was something her parents had. I use to play with it when I was at their house.
Avatar 11:13am Listener Gregory:

My niece once put a plastic lima bean (game piece) up her nose, and she had to go to the emergency room to have it extracted. There's just something about the uncooked bean that has a magnetic pull towards the sinuses. It has never been explained.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am solo mon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Franco Twinkie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Franco Twinkie:

The PNW is wonderful Hugo. Don it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Jeff Golick:

It's a little know fact that Coleman Hawkins was called Bean because his nose was a prodigious source of new lima bean shoots.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Franco Twinkie:

I also stuffed a comic from Bazooka chewing gum up my nose Gregory. It came out at my grandmas house.
Avatar 11:22am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, and Johnny Hodges was called The Rabbit, because he actually *ate* the beans rather than putting them up his nose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am listener james from westwood:

That Yusef story gives me life, Doug. Always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Jeff Golick:

@Doug, that story remains chill-inducing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

My mother once shoved green beans up my nose when I refused to eat them. That story has been cracking therapists up since the early '90s.
