This was the first Kinks song I ever heard, on the middle-school lunchroom PA system (they'd play WPLJ or one of the classic-rock stations for us).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm Stanley:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm dreamyandseedy:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:05pm listener james from westwood:

When I heard about the Huntington Beach oil spill, all I could think of was how Rollins in Get in the Van would describe the Huntington Beach skinheads as The. Worst.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Julie and Drummer souls. Celebrating my half birthday today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Julie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm sim:

@Julie. I trust you completely as captain on your little starship of music.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:11pm David (in London):

Sting was ill-advised to stand with this back to Stewart...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Julie:

hiya Hubig!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Bryant in TO:

I can't hear "Rehumanize Yourself" without thinking of the music Stewart Copeland wrote for the closing credits of "Droids"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Julie:

I had to cut so much. i cut Elton and Olivia! Both had albums that year.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:12pm David (in London):

Hey Hubig. Well, we all have to go through that phase at one point...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Julie:

I only know one Police album this one is new to me!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Julie:

I think if I do a 1981 show in Nov & Dec, I'll get through all the stuff I chose yesterday.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Handy Haversack:

Barbara is in a really cool project now called Barbara + Marco (Marco is also in it). They played with Creek and Kills at that gig at the brewery near the Catskills a couple of months back: barbaramarco.bandcamp.com

David, I think you'd dig it.
Avatar 🦇 3:20pm Bas NL:

Please do, Julie!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Miss G:

*sadness* Just discovered this album did not survive The Great Purge. So, glad to hear it on WFMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm coelacanth∅:

i guess 1981 is very much not representative of "80s music", after all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Julie:

heya Miss G!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Handy Haversack:

My mom died in 1981.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm sim:

I'm reading the 1981 entry in WP. Pope and presidential assassination attempts. STS-1 space shuttle Columbia launches it's maiden flight as does the Boeing 767. MTV launches, as well. General Hospital has the world's record for soap opera viewership when Luke and Laura get married. Mauritania abolishes slavery
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm spodiodi:

hey coelacanth∅! just "finished" replacing a window regulator in my hooptie. every time i wrench on cars, i think of you. took way too long (over an extended period of time), but i'm glad it's done (as it's getting for now :)
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, Julie. I'm doing much better now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Miss G:

1981 was kind of "dark night of the soul" for me, so, music helped a lot!
  3:31pm Mark R:

Luke and Laura first met when he raped her. So the story sort of has a happy ending.
Avatar 3:31pm HyperDose:

Add another hug to that tally, Handy. 💙

Hey Julie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm spodiodi:

i turned 10 in 1981, and Only a Lad was released 🌟

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Handy Haversack:

Ledgered, HyperD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm coelacanth∅:

i think of 81 more as the year John Hinckley missed

Noooooooo
  3:33pm Mr. Nobody:

lol
  3:33pm Switchblade Batman:

I think 1981 was the year I went to kindergarten. I don't remember much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm coelacanth∅:

i'm sorry Handy that sucks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm coelacanth∅:

ghost in the machine maybe their best album; synchronicity the worst
  3:36pm Switchblade Batman:

@Handy, sorry. My grandmother died around then, and I loved her very much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Julie:

Hey KWilde! Hey Switchblade Batman!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm coelacanth∅:

my grandmother died then too. i didn't know her very well but i know she was an exemplary human being. someone who called herself a catholic but in actuality was a Christian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Julie:

ha! Synchronicity was the one I had. On cassette. everybody I knew was super excited about it coming out so I had to get it too

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Julie:

hiya Hopey! Thank you!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, pals. I was six. Good in some ways to be young and have a chance to recover. I think it took me longer when my dad died as I was on the cusp of independent adulthood. That was a bad few years. Fortunately, I didn't alienate everyone!

1981 Arcade Legends. Donkey Kong, Frogger, Galaga, Ms Pac-Man, Tempest, Centipede, Defender, Castle Wolfenstein.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Julie:

we had Pong. As much as my dad loved new tech he never got us any better games.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm coelacanth∅:

Julie at the time i bought it and played it exactly once! but maybe i'd like it more now? i have all 5 and ghost in the machine is the only one i occasionally still listen to
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Handy Haversack:

We also tapped out after Pong!

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:21pm listener james from westwood:

Whoa, Nico!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm sim:

I'm sorry, it's "Les Schtroumpfs" and they were started in 1958. Anyway, the museum has a complete life-size Smurf village. Little mushroom houses, carts made of twigs. It's like a lot of the miniature cities tourist things, except for Smurfs.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:22pm David (in London):

Handy, he was a (by British standards) quite prolific serial killer. Cast rather a dark pall over the late 70s / early 80s. Utter ineptitude on the part of the police, but they lucked in and caught him by accident. Anyway, sorry to harsh everyone's mellow. 1981 was a very unmellow year in the UK.

I'm a little confused about Swag Pledges for Hellraiser. As a S4L do I automatically get the Ham Shirt & Retro Shirt? Or is that a separate one off Pledge needed. Which I will make, if I make a Pledge, can I ration it out to my fave Shows?.... & breathe! 😊
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Scott67:

Asking cos Handy is in the Room.😎🤙
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Julie:

yes you can divide it over shows... I think you have to make a new pledge to get the shirts.
Avatar 4:40pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:36 Julie: that's exactly what it was Julie, me and my then girlfriend were about the only living people there on that summer Sunday. Very odd, because often Mr Mojo Risin's grave was the 24/7 hour party central
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Julie:

I would visit Nick Drake's grave, where's he buried?

Yeah, what Stanley said. You'd have to raise your S4L or do a one-time US$100 pledge to get the two shirts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Miss G:

When I pledged before, I think it said I could dedicate that pledge to up to 2 shows? I didn't pay attention because I hope to check my accountings and make another pledge.

It was the only way he'd get them !! & George Harrison talking about not being able to get a cup of sugar after the War much less a Rawk record. & now - streams & podcasts like a gushing firehose I struggle to direct...
Adam had the Burundi drums first & all yeah. But like a good Scorpio he resurrected himself !
  6:37pm Androu B.:

Julie, any chance we'll get to hear some Visage?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Julie:

augh sorry Androu not today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Julie:

  6:39pm Androu B.:

  6:39pm Androu B.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Julie:

  6:41pm Andres:

Like this Duran Duran, so many bands from today’s show I got to know on the next album. Hit radio it was!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Julie:

too bad you weren't here last week, I did get some requests in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Julie:

yeah it's fun dipping into the pre-hit albums, though girls on film is on this one
Avatar 6:42pm C.S.:

The Reflex was stuck on a loop at work and played every 5 minutes. It got old FAST.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Julie:

People were talking about Duran Duran recently, I think they were at the central park show couple weeks back maybe?
  6:43pm Andres:

Sitting down for dinner with the rest of this great show today. Thank you, Julie!!
  6:44pm Milkies:

Reflex song or band?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Julie:

thanks for listening Andres!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Miss G:

ahhhhh LOVED the Go-Gos! When they came out, and Cyndi Lauper, my friends from my small town would say "Hey G, I found a band which is just like you used to be!" (as a freaky outcast, *L*)
Avatar 6:45pm C.S.:

It's a Duran Duran song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Julie:

haha Miss G my best friend's big sister was always saying Belinda reminded her of me.
  6:45pm Androu B.:

How about OMD or Spandau Ballet, Julie?
  6:46pm Milkies:

🎶Flex Flex FLEX!!🎶
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Julie:

sorry!
Avatar 6:47pm C.S.:

Wow. The last time I heard Slow Children was back in 2012. The song Respective Sides.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Julie:

thanks for the nudge though, I don't have the 81 OMD album!
Avatar 🦇 6:48pm Bas NL:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Banshees. Such good records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Julie:

songs about birds, bands named after birds, songs with bird song, etc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Julie:

someone is banging on my bedroom wall I was like oh the music is too loud...on my headphones?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Ken From Hyde Park:

They obviously want you to switch to the speakers!
  6:51pm Androu B.:

Actually, Julie, I don't blame you for not being such a big fan of the New Romantic bands. Not everyone caught on to that wave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Miss G:

Yay! Adored this album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Julie:

It's not that I'm not, I just tried to make this show as varied as possible. I cut it down from 9 1/2 hours last night. Some of your faves got tossed.
Avatar 6:52pm C.S.:

How long does it take to make a 9 1/2 hour playlist?!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Handy Haversack:

Julie: Dougie MacLean, "High Flying Seagull."

There was a great Brooklyn band in the mid-00s called Eagle Hawk Falcon Owl, but I don't know that they ever recorded anything.

From R.E.M's Document: "King of Birds" (or "Disturbance at the Heron House"!).

Also: SPOX!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Julie:

the siouxsie/suzie safety segue was not planned. my brain did that on its own at 5am
Avatar 6:53pm laurapanic:

Great curation, Julie. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Julie:

CS That was pretty much all of Monday
Avatar 6:53pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

For shows like this one, I DON'T want to make requests myself as I'm curious to hear what will be played - and I've been very happy tonight due to the song selections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Julie:

I'm finishing with a guilty pleasure pop song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Miss G:

See, I learned of Sparks by watching Don Kirshner's Rock Concert after my bedtime. I recommend looking that performance up online
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm spodiodi:

great show, Julie! thank you!

HBD Russel Mael
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Julie:

I hear the doc is great, I need to watch that
Avatar 6:54pm C.S.:

Back when I did college radio, it would take a week's worth of trips to the public library to use their computers to form a 3 hour playlist. Like having a full time job.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Julie:

thanks for listening everyone! and for pledging!
Avatar 🦇 6:56pm Bas NL:

Thanks for the great selection Julie! What a great show!!
Avatar 6:56pm C.S.:

@Photocopy Cha Cha 2000: I tend to agree with some themes. I am so curious what Julie will play that I've never heard of before. Although if something really good pops into my mind, I'll send a message.
  6:56pm Milkies:

Thanks Julie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Julie:

I worked ridiculously, insanely hard on this show, putting it together AND paring it down.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Julie. Probably lucky you're fixed to four hours. If it were open ended, you'd be pressed to go another five.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Julie:

thanks so much everyone...birds next week, and we'll revisit 1981 in November!
  6:57pm Androu B.:

Sparks has been getting a lot more attention now thanks in part to the recent documentary presented on WFMU's movie streaming channel.

Again, thanks for bringing back 1981 for all of us, Julie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Julie:

@Ken for sure!

psy furs: talk talk talk
wall of voodoo: dark continent
police: ghost...
league of gentlemen
my life in the bush of ghosts
dks: in god we trust,inc.
