And they're close together, Phillippe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm David Dichelle:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm David Dichelle:

Hey, Chris - thanks, hope you too are enjoying sufficient personal freedom.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Michael 98145:

@Stanley, heh. missed that ...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm David Dichelle:

TDK: Yes, here he is again - well spotted!
Avatar 🚂 12:36pm TDK60:

Just checked Wickedpea. Bassist Dave Pegg also sings on this album.
Avatar 🚂 12:41pm TDK60:

I recently saw a video of F.C. playing some outdoor concert in a Nordic country, around this same time; to a bunch of blonde kids who looked like they'd rather be hearing Thin Lizzy. But Swarbrick was unfazed, singing and fiddling with aplomb!

A story as old as time ...

Hi, Sylvia!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:59pm chris in the redwoods:

been thinking a bit about Uzbekistan lately. so, that's my guess for this week.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Brian in UK:

Going for Xinjiang. Some delightful musics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm David Dichelle:

Michael: That is the short and - more to the point - long of it.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Handy Haversack:

Yup: Demonym: Macedonian

Hello David and fellow riders! I am guessing Oman and Egypt (I always like to guess 2).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm David Dichelle:

Hello ? !

I am ? @) (super busy at work--"multitasking")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Marie!
Avatar 🚂 1:03pm TDK60:

? - But if you guess right, you'll only be half right, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm David Dichelle:

Brian: Xinjiang doesn't come up on the list, but certainly might come up when China does.
  1:04pm Marie:

@ TDK60---HA! Hmmm @)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Handy Haversack:

Marie, Oman was already done, so you have put all eggs in the Egypt basket (like Moses?).
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Carmichael:

Late to the ride, been running alongside for quite a while. Lichtenstein.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm David Dichelle:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm chris in the redwoods:

a Lada Niva is a Soviet-era 4x4, it seems. but Ladaniva remains elusive to my searches
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm David Dichelle:

The Gevolt video is well worth viewing: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:22pm chris in the redwoods:

found Ladaniva on fb and ig... ok then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm David Dichelle:

Yes, you're right, Chris, and I didn't even notice the similarity of the name.
  1:25pm Marie:

Hey Handy, oh... so at least I will have clarity about my degree of rightness if I get it right. And here I thought I was choosing a really unlikely country to choose, but I guess that's true randomness... I loves me some heavy metal, like Gevolt..
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Michael 98145:

I believe there is a Lada Collectors group in our area ...
  1:30pm Marie:

I def. want to check out Disco Underground
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Michael 98145:

( heh ' The name Lada is derived from lada, a type of small boat in Slavic language' )
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Handy Haversack:

Could "Niva" be related to the river Neva? Or is that too cute?
Avatar 🚂 1:38pm Will in Norman:

from the wikipedia article on the car: "Нива[10] (niva) is a Russian word, literally: "(corn) field", but also meaning "area of practice". The name Niva (НИВА) was formed as an acronym from the initials[11] (first letters) of the names of the children of the Niva's chief designers, Pyotr Prusov's two daughters, and Solovyov's two sons."
Avatar 🚂 1:39pm Will in Norman:

so ladaniva could be interpreted to mean 'cornfield boat'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm David Dichelle:

Hey Will! Yes, that still places the name firmly in the cute category.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Hallo ! Sounding marvelous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, RRN!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Handy Haversack:

Fay Hield would approve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...sorry I missed the JackOrion exposition...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Cmurtha:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Yvang:

Hi David ! Hi travelers ! This track is Grooovyssimo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Cmurtha and Yvang!
  1:52pm Marie:

Hey David, I'm reading a novel set in Germany by an author I mentioned on a playlist a couple of weeks ago that I was telling you about. It's really good--"The History of Curried Sausage" by Uwe Timm--so far, it's mostly about the end of WW2 there--a real slice of life
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm David Dichelle:

Sounds interesting, thanks for reminding me, Marie!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Stanley:

Ah Victor has passed. Was playing a CD of his this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm David Dichelle:

Interestingly the German title is "Die Entdeckung der Currywurst" or "The Discovery of Currywurst"
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Stanley:

And my guess this week is..............Haiti
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Handy Haversack:

Sounds spicy, Marie!

(I'll get David in London's coat ...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm David Dichelle:

Interesting guess, Stanley, we shall soon see if is a prophetic one...
Avatar 🚂 1:59pm Will in Norman:

kind of makes sense they'd change it like that for the english translation. currywurst is (unfortunately imo) relatively obscure to most english speakers outside of germany/central europe
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Michael 98145:

@Marie, thanks! Sounds interesing "The Invention of Curried Sausage"
Avatar 🚂 2:02pm Will in Norman:

it's sad to hear of Victor Uwaifo's death. he truly belonged among the pantheon of African guitar gods
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Michael 98145:

oh, good choice! Lebanon.
  2:05pm Marie:

Ha, Handy! Yes, interesting translation. It's so interesting to be able to see this very specific time and place that you don't hear too much about, and it is well-written.
Avatar 🚂 2:05pm TDK60:

Oh, poor Lebanon. On with the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm David Dichelle:

Michael: All thanks to random.org!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Yvang:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Yvang:

I agree she's huge.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Handy Haversack:

Our friend was trying to show Kate how to play an oud last weekend. She's a Lebanese percussionist and singer who I think is starting to play out in NYC.
Avatar 🚂 2:10pm Will in Norman:

cool! How'd she do?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:10pm chris in the redwoods:

very cool, Handy! :)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Stanley:

Le Liban.
When we were 'younger men', my pal and I visited the Lebanese Embassy in Cairo, knowing that visas were not possible at the time, because we were told that we would see the 'most beautiful women in the world'. And this information was correct.
Avatar 🚂 2:11pm βrian:

I could go for a bottle of Chateau Musar about now.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Handy Haversack:

She gave it a whirl! Our friend's cousin, a bass player who plays with her, was also there, and he and Kate had fun with bass tips and pedals and whatnot. Another situation where I'm reduced to mere eye candy.
Avatar 🚂 2:14pm TDK60:

I looked at the Random Road list. I think this is the third Arabic speaking country chosen. (Oman and Qatar before.)
Avatar 🚂 2:14pm Bas NL:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm David Dichelle:

Will: It did indeed, nice blend of influences.
Avatar 🚂 2:35pm TDK60:

Hi Bas.
Avatar 🚂 2:35pm Bas NL:

Hi TDK.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Michael 98145:

Ah! Here we go!
Avatar 🚂 2:36pm Will in Norman:

there was also a noticeable jazz influence. The combination of jazz with middle eastern maqam music always brings Rabih Abou Khalil to mind for me, as his work is a prime example of how well the 2 genres complement each other, so 1 of his songs was a great follow-up
  2:38pm Funky16Corners:

Testify! Coming up at 3pm- https://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/107815
Avatar 🚂 2:38pm TDK60:

So, today's pick is either .lb or LB in the ISO 3166-2 codes.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Brian in UK:

@Will, my selection was Xianjiang, which is now China but the maqam is still strong there.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:40pm northguineahills:

Those statues have no personal space....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Will, sure couldn't leave Rabih Abou Khalil out.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Handy Haversack:

Woo, that was a wild ride!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm David Dichelle:

Hey NGH, no not very much!
Avatar 🚂 2:41pm TDK60:

Handy. I know a music store where an oud is waiting for me to try it out.
Avatar 🚂 2:41pm Will in Norman:

@brian
very true, maqam's influence is far-reaching. you can even hear it further east than xianjiang. In places like Malaysia and Indonesia there are maqam-influenced genres that are quite popular in the muslim communities in those countries
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:42pm northguineahills:

I was hoping for some Mazen Kerbaj (used to be in email corresoindance w/ him and saw in NYC forever ago)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm David Dichelle:

Thanks for the recommendation in any case, NGH!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Handy Haversack:
