Hi Irene- pretty background (visual and aural).

Caught the Fire Music documentary yesterday-not bad (but suffers from my main beef with music documentaries, not enough music...). Lots of Ornette speaking, though, a good thing.

HyperDose:

I came for radio, but staying for the cough drop séance.

Irene Trudel:

Hey Andrew, doctorjazz and Hyperdose! Welcome to all tuning in for my fill-in for Gina.

Hello Irene and drummer streamers.

Interesting, i felt I recognized this piano piece but would not have guessed it is Bill Evans.

Happy you're here, WR and Uncle Michael!

And thank you for the Robert Wyatt tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
Doug Schulkind:

I had already arranged for a fill-in for September 14, the first Friday after the 11th. I had an ear infection and had to miss the show. I forget who filled in for me.

Wow, Doug. It felt really strange to do a WFMU show within that first week after the attack, but cathartic at the same time. For those curious about my WNYC experience: walkingonthewires.blogspot.com...

Lovely show, as ever, Irene!

Irene thank you for the link and for blogging your day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
Irene Trudel:

Wow, Doug! Marc Grobman, who played lots of rare 78s. I wonder how he's doing these days. Always liked his shows.

What WR said, interesting read.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm
Doug Schulkind:

Yes, thanks for sharing that, Irene. It gave me chills reading your mention of the "brilliant blue-sky." The sky was crazy blue that morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm
Irene Trudel:

Yeah, it was an extremely intense day. I think I got home between 4 and 5am. My husband and I hugged and cried, and watched cartoons until we were unwound enough to sleep.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 5:54pm
doctorjazz:

Kicking around going to the Central Jersey Jazz Festival tonight (Marcus Printop will be in Metuchen tonight, Orin Evans tomorrow in Somerville). Bit of schlepping (not as bad as going to the city, though).
Avatar 5:55pm
HyperDose:

I was in 8th grade at the time and they didn't make the announcement to tell us until the second to last period (wrong move on their part). Last class the teacher was watching his mini tv and we were all sitting there listening to the news. I remember taking the bus home, mom was crying by the tv, went out with my friend Chris and talked about how weird the day was. I'll never forget it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm
Irene Trudel:

Wow, that sounds really great doctorjazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm
Irene Trudel:

Hyperdose, I remember lots of crying in the days following that.
Avatar 6:01pm
HyperDose:

I remember a mix of patriotism and thinly veiled racism. It was a strange time. Peter sounds like such a great support!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm
Irene Trudel:

It was very strange back then, but Peter was (and is) a great support for all the good and bad times. I remember a lot of people displaying American flags, especially on cars. Sadly, it don't think the racism was that thinly veiled.

Good evening everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
Irene Trudel:

Yes! Hello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm
WR:

On July 26 Evan Funk Davies played some air checks, mostly NYC radio but some tv audio, from 9/11 as a fill-in for Mark Hurst. Looks like it was not archived. I have lived in NYC since '92 but was out of town for work. The air checks conveyed a mix of shock, dismay, disarray of the day and the strident response of some.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm
Irene Trudel:

WR, somewhere I still have airchecks from the Howard Stern Show from that morning, the fun evaporating pretty quickly as news came in. I've only been able to listen to it once. Any of them, just a little too painful to remember.

Home stretch here, lovely show Irene. Heading to Metuchen for some live music (@Fred won't forgive me if I don't). Thanks!
