Hey there! Cute car!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Diana in Hungary:

Greetings, David and everyone!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Threemoons:

Heyo.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:00pm YETI BOB:

Hi David, Continentals. Is that a Trabant?
  12:00pm headcleaner:

Vvvrrrrroooooooommmmm!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm David Dichelle:

Hey there Phillippe, Diana, Threemoons, Yeti Bob, Headcleaner!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm David Dichelle:

It is indeed a Trabant - captured here in the wild.
Avatar 🚂 12:03pm βrian:

Music to can by. Just brought home the first batch of tomatoes. 117 pounds.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Michael 98145:

ah! made it
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:04pm chresti:

Hi David and continentals!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:04pm YETI BOB:

βrian: A friend of mine just suggested making tomato paste (using the oven, in a pan), have you ever tried that?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:05pm YETI BOB:

I've got a bunch of tomatoes too but closer to 17 pounds than 117 ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm David Dichelle:

Greetings ßrian, Michael, Chresti!
Avatar 🚂 12:06pm βrian:

We haven't. It sounds good, but we really focus on quantity and speed. And we prefer eating tomatoes because they're juicier.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Phillippe:

Hey threemoons, I saw on the other board that your mom is having some challenges with getting around and getting her treatments -- I hope things settle down and she can get everything taken care of when it needs to happen.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:06pm chresti:

Nice Trabent that's not tres bent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm David Dichelle:

Chresti: True, not as many on the roads here as a decade or two back.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Phillippe:

the Trabant looks like it would make a great little autocross car. That is, if it could make it all the way through the course
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Threemoons:

@Phillipe thank you so so much...
Avatar 🚂 12:09pm Bas NL:

Hi David! Hi subwaytistas!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Threemoons:

FYI this is the BEST tomato sauce ever. I use my 16 qt enamaled pan with the lid off: the-orbit.net...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Threemoons:

Dump everything in, chuck it in the oven, and walk away for several hours. AMAZING.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:09pm YETI BOB:

1.1L engine - and it's even a 4-stroke, unlike earlier Trabants! This model is the final Trabant, produced 1990-1991 (if I have my facts right)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm David Dichelle:

Yes, some people "tweak" their old Trabis and turn them into monster cars of some sort. Not the case in the picture, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Bas!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Threemoons:

@Brian having tomato envy reading your post.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Michael 98145:

Hope everyone in WFMU-land is okay after that "apocalypse-grade event"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm David Dichelle:

Yes indeed, I hope those in the area are doing okay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm ChukAmok:

Hey Phillippe! Just saw your comment on Trouble's board. Glad things have calmed there. The footage looked insane, and West St. looks wrecked. Nothing to report here, except I am leaving work early today to go see Mdou Moctar in Asheville tonight!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:14pm YETI BOB:

3Moons - I tried to look at that recipe - it links to 'susie bright's journal' which is password-protected so I can't see the recipe. (Also is that Susie Bright the sex writer or some other Susie?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm David Dichelle:

Hey ChukAmok, enjoy the concert - great band!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Michael 98145:

Entendre Valley
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Phillippe:

@Chuk Oooh, Mdou! Color me jealous!

Yeah, West Street took the brunt of it. Given the kinds of damage and the fact we aren't prepared for that kind of stuff, it's surprising there were no serious injuries
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Threemoons:

@yeti Bob yes the sex writer Odd that you can't view it...hang on...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Threemoons:

Does this work? the-orbit.net...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm WR:

Hi David and all. Wool gathering?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm YETI BOB:

3Moons: that page works, but it says "I want Susie to get the traffic, so I’m not going to repeat the basic recipe here — you have to go to her blog to get it" - it's that link to "her blog" that is protected
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm David Dichelle:

Hello WR, yes, I hope nobody is falling asleep.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Threemoons:

aaah sorry
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Threemoons:

Damn, I had it online somewhere.
Avatar 12:28pm still b/p:

I had opened this playlist but hadn't swtiched streams and what I was hearing made me say, "1964...this sound? Getattaheah!" Now all is well in the meadow of correspondence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm David Dichelle:

Hey sb/p, yes, have a seat on one of the blankets.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Michael 98145:

this is pleasant
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Threemoons:

Basic idea: Take all of your ingredients. Dump in large ovenproof pot. Set oven to 275 and leave lid OFF and just let it bake for hours and hours. When it's all done go at it with an immersion blender. Wonderful. You really don't even need a recipe.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Threemoons:

I am gonna stick to Estonia, Chad, and Tuuvalu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hullo ! ...Eating, distracted & about to soak my head in the tub ...nonetheless appreciating As Ever.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Diana in Hungary:

My guess for this week is Tunisia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, RRN!
Avatar 🚂 12:39pm βrian:

Blanching going well. About 40% finished ...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Diana in Hungary:

This is insanely wonderful (Violons Barbares).
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Michael 98145:

( great title )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm David Dichelle:

It is Mongolia meets Bulgaria meets France.
Avatar 🚂 12:43pm TDK60:

Hello hallo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm David Dichelle:

Hey, hey, TDK!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Stanley:

Hi David, hope you had a good week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm David Dichelle:

Hello Stanley - thanks, hope you did as well.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm YETI BOB:

3Moons - thanks.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:47pm YETI BOB:

My random choice program came up with "New Zealand", so that's my guess for today (we can hear The Clean, The Bats, etc...)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Threemoons:

@Yeti Bob The last time I did it I used my 16 qt enameled stockpot and many many CSA Romas that had some heat burst. Also put in lots of yellow and white onions, sweet peppers, LOTS of garlic and a lot of fresh basil and oregano. Use a huge glug of olive oil also. Before you blend with immersion blender just take herb stems out; easy peasy. Don't forget lots of salt and pepper also as well as a pinch of sugar if need be....tailor to your tastes.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Michael 98145:

Well, THAT sounds tasty
Avatar 🚂 12:49pm TDK60:

I'm sticking with Suriname.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Threemoons:

@Michael the long slow oven roasting caramelizes everything a teeny bit. Again, leave the lid off...everything gets concentrated. I should make some eventually again.
  12:51pm Marie:

Just tuning in and already enjoying the ride! My guesses are Vietnam and Chile
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Threemoons:

It also makes your kitchen smell absolutely amazing, and the finished product freezes really well also.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm David Dichelle:

Hey Marie, I'm glad you are!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm YETI BOB:

☾☾☾: I'm going to try it. I do pretty much the same thing on the stovetop, but roasting it in the oven sounds like a great idea.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm chresti:

Gotta go where there's no internet, thanks David!
See y'all later!
  12:52pm Marie:

I love that car and its color. And BTW, hello, and hello everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm coelacanth∅:

greetings David, subterranean Freedom Riders
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Chresti - take care out there!
Avatar 🚂 12:52pm TDK60:

We get more than one choice? I'll add the Oglala Sioux Nation, and the People's Emerging Continent of Revolutionary Latin America.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Threemoons:

@YetiBob no stirring necessary if you do it in the oven--no scorching!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm David Dichelle:

Salutations, Coel!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Threemoons:

@YetiBob last time I did it I let it go overnight low n slow....
  12:54pm headcleaner:

Nice - just got to see Stephane the other nite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm David Dichelle:

Marie: That is a typical Trabant, color and all. Most cars here in Eastern Germany used to be Trabants, now they are relatively few and far between, but not entirely gone, 30 years later.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:55pm YETI BOB:

☾☾☾: I'll report back once I've tried this. Thanks!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Threemoons:

WARNING RE oven roasting tomato sauce: Make sure that any hardware on your pots is oven-safe! ie Farberware only goes up to 300 IIRC and Le Creuset is 350 IIRC. I retrofitted ALL of my enamelware with metal knobs and it's all good to go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm David Dichelle:

Headcleaner - how was it? I'd love to catch a show.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Stanley:

How I would love to be in a bistro in Lisbon, right now. (Closes eyes and dreams of O Jasmim in Mouraria "Another Poro Tonico, sir?"
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Threemoons:

@YetiBob Enjoy and please report back!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Threemoons:

I want to be sipping absinthe in a hookah lounge somewhere in Berlin right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm coelacanth∅:

< oh, trabant. you probably just saved me an hour!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm David Dichelle:

3M: I think you can do that around the corner from me in Leipzig, if that works.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm David Dichelle:

Coel: Yes, indeed. There was also the slightly more "upscale" Wartburg, but mostly Trabis.
  1:02pm headcleaner:

David - Stephane Wrembel live a lot like the studio tracks (crystal clear) with a philosophy lesson or several interlaced between the pieces. Whenever you're headed back to the 'alte Heimat' ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm coelacanth∅:

TDK (@1252) you can guess more than one, but then you forfeit the Big Cash Prize and just get a smileyface sticker if you're correct.
  1:02pm Marie:

Hey David, interesting about the car. That reminded me of a novel I read a few years ago set in Berlin on on the summer solstice, just after the reunification and I think mostly in East Berlin about a writer researching an article on potatoes--it's really good. It's called Midsummer Night by Uwe Timm. It was translated into English from German, I think. I highly recommend it.
Avatar 🚂 1:03pm TDK60:

Ok Coel. I'm sticking with Suriname.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm David Dichelle:

Marie: Thanks, I'll look for it. There are all those pictures of Trabant after Trabant passing into West Berlin on the day the wall fell.
  1:05pm Marie:

I was supposed to be in Greece right now but I cancelled the trip cuz I got such a sweet freelance gig. Interesting about those images of the cars @)
Avatar 1:06pm still b/p:

Just looking an article on regular and growing flooding threats in subway systems around the world. Gots to keep Continental Subway safe and dry, man!

Here's a hookah dude, above ground, just meeting conditions as he found them in past couple days.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm coelacanth∅:

haha Yeti really? it looks very luxurious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm coelacanth∅:

the wartburg was a 3 cylinder, 2-stroke. "5 major moving parts".
i assume they're not counting the car itself in that equation.

i'm crouching outside your door with a paper cup pressed against it
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Diana in Hungary:

Yay!!! Yes, "Crying for the Coast" or "Shouting for Shore" is a good translation.
  1:16pm Marie:

I'm listening online from Queens, NYC! Thanking the universe that I don't live on a ground floor or basement (in light of the storm last night)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:16pm dutchtheo:

Hallo David, and subway-, trabi- and meadow mower globetrotters. Laptop internet listener.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm David Dichelle:

And good evening, dutchtheo!

Thank you for playing "Partért kiáltó," David!
Avatar 🚂 1:18pm Bas NL:

Little bicycle detour, will rejoin at home! Great sounds so far David! And my guess: Jemen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm David Dichelle:

Coel: But there was something about reclaiming the term. I suppose we need to tune in to Testify! to find out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm David Dichelle:

Thank you for your recommendation, Diana!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm David Dichelle:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm coelacanth∅:

Did I miss the country announcement?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm David Dichelle:

And happy cycling, Bas!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:20pm YETI BOB:

I listen on my laptop - I have a little script I wrote so I just type 'wfmu' or 'drummer' and it starts playing. Also made a little icon for the desktop toolbar: imgur.com...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:20pm YETI BOB:

That plays the main WFMU stream, I really need to make another one with a little drum that plays the drummer stream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm David Dichelle:

Thanks everyone for your responses - so many different ways to listen. As for me I just use my laptop a lot, but my phone as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm David Dichelle:

Hey Carmichael!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Threemoons:

@DD thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm coelacanth∅:

i listen mostly via laptop > 220w stereo receiver > big ol' hardwood-cabinet speakers.
on the fairly rare occasion that the main wfmu has good programming i might listen via 90.1.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Diana in Hungary:

I listen on my laptop. Once I listened from my phone.
  1:26pm Marie:

Hey David, where did you grow up?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm chris in the redwoods:

i'm no longer sure it is safe to dance.
hi, David and fellow passengers. hope you are all doing as well as can be expected.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Yvang:

Hey David and the Continentals! My guess will be India. But maybe to be fair with the smallest lands the subcontinent should be divided in its 28 states?
Avatar 1:26pm still b/p:

Laptop when inside.
Phone when outside.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:27pm YETI BOB:

(the laptop is plugged into the stereo - not listening on the tinny laptop speakers - got a pair of big old JBL's)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:27pm YETI BOB:

and on those rare occasions I find myself on the East Coast, I make sure to tune in 91.1 on the car radio! It's been a few years though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Chris and Yvang!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Carmichael:

I listen on my work computer, at work, where my computer is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm David Dichelle:

Yvang, yes, India could be an entire series, as could Russia. I'll try to get through this one first, though, still 180+ to go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm David Dichelle:

Marie: Long Island, just past the Queens line.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm coelacanth∅:

The big Kenwood floor speakers and 45 year old receiver very rarely get turned on anymore.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:31pm YETI BOB:

I think the thing with "Boogaloo" might have to do with "Boogaloo Boys" who are sort of neo-fascists like the Proud Boys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm coelacanth∅:

hey chris. it IS safe, if you do the safety dance. don't for even a moment stick a tango move in there.

"Entrance to Invisibility"--what an intriguing title/topic

  1:33pm Marie:

@David--ah, I see. Were you by the sea?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:34pm YETI BOB:

I've got some early-80s JBL L112's and they sound fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm coelacanth∅:

- and amazing how good they can (but more often don't) make small speakers sound now.
i still think the old ones sound better though.
  1:35pm Marie:

Hi Diana @). @ Yeti--do you have to continually get rid of what you have to make room or do you have stacks of speakers, so to speak?
  1:35pm Kelly:

Loving this Kafedra track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm David Dichelle:

Marie, well sort of, maybe a mile or two away from the North Shore.
  1:37pm Marie:

@David, I see--relatively close...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:38pm YETI BOB:

Marie - sometimes the old amps break down and I need a new one. I've got speakers in 3 rooms, and one spare pair. So I can't really buy any more vintage stereo gear right now :) I would probably be a hoarder if I lived alone but fortunately I don't.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:38pm WR:

whoa, was not aware of that coopting of the word boogaloo, thanks for the explanation Yeti Bob, and now Larry's description
of his program today makes more sense.
Avatar 1:38pm still b/p:

When my old KLHs became afflicted with suspension disintegration and I purchased the Kenwoods, the salesman said speakers in the price range could be expected to last five years. I wanted to say, "You're talking nonsense," but I didn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm coelacanth∅:

i have a pair of c.1960 jbls that were part of my father's set-up throughout my childhood. i need to replace the foam though. totally disintegrated.
i use genesis c.1979. the foam is also torn -for years. they seem to sound fine though.
Avatar 1:39pm still b/p:

That was more than 25 years ago.

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:39pm YETI BOB:

yeah, just get 'em re-foamed if you can find someone who does that. i know a guy in Chicago but he's getting old!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm coelacanth∅:

  1:42pm headcleaner:

I've got my Dad's KLH 17s across from me in this room here. Need to try them out sometime
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm coelacanth∅:

'thing is, i don't need them. i just can't get rid of 'em!
i do want to set up speakers out on the deck, but i also have some good old ohms (c.1977?) that were my brother's, which are smaller than the jbls so more suitable. (i'm not sure how to protect them from the elements)

@yetibob I have a fine vintage stereo graveyard in the basement. Finally gave up on receivers/amps. Finally found some decently-priced Sony units that have a phono jack and ground post, so that's where I'm headed. I have three amps in the house as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm coelacanth∅:

Just wanted to mention this gem www.tzadik.com... "Invite the Spirit" by Henry Kaiser, Sang-Won Park, and Charles K Noyes - from 1983 - first time I ever heard Korean music and it was quite mind-opening
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:39pm YETI BOB:

The liner notes explain how the rhythm is modeled after breath (12BPM) instead of hearbeat (80-120BPM), which made a lot of sense to me at the time, and was quite inspiring for my own music.
