  9:02am JT:

my only neil young lp that didn’t get stolen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am JG:

Have always been aware of Trans but never really went out of my way to listen. From what I hear here on FMU, its pretty great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Handy Haversack:

Yeti Bob! We had a really, really wonderful few days. First time in memory we felt like we could relax and that the forces of fate and world weren't all arrayed against us. Really good time, even though it was all spent stuck indoors while 8" of rain came down. Also, we brought the jam with us, and it was a total hit! That jar disappeared in a hurry!
Avatar 9:03am winston legthigh:

the record company hated trans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Handy Haversack:

Monster!
  9:03am Rachel Bo Bachel:

KEN I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am B Now B:

Hi Jim the Poet
Already off to a great start :)
  9:04am JT:

withdrawal in disgust is not the same as apathy
  9:05am Rachel Bo Bachel:

I just jumped up and yelled “YES!” w/ the opening riff :D plus Neil??? I need to bone up on my trans! Didn’t recognize one of my favorite artists! Thank you professor Ken!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Handy Haversack:

Rache, it's Jim the Poet filling in and bringing the hits!
  9:06am Rachel Bo Bachel:

Handy isn’t Monster great!? I ❤️ all REM, up to “ Up”
Avatar 9:06am winston legthigh:

never listened to trans either. jim the poet is filling in for ken i think?
  9:06am Rachel Bo Bachel:

Handy Oh! How embarrassing- Jim the poet you are rocking the airwaves!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am YETI BOB:

Handy: I'm so glad to hear it!! I need to plan another getaway before summer runs out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Ken From Hyde Park:

Sorry, I don't know what is the frequency.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am G:

91.1, 90.1, 91.9
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am BillyLundun:

Didn't the title of that song come from a mugging experience?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Handy Haversack:

Rache, we listened to Monster for the first time in a while on the drive to MI and back recently. There are a lot of great songs on it! I feel sometimes like it doesn't quite cohere as an album, but I like so many of the songs.

I have the same feelings on the Jets, Jim.

YB: we're heading to Maine in just over a week! Time is collapsing.
Avatar 9:09am winston legthigh:

haha g!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Ken From Hyde Park:

Call 201-209-9368 and give Jim a piece of your mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am G:

@BillyL: Yes, Dan Rather the tv news guy, maybe the late 80s. Bizarre case of mistaken identity, if I recall correctly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Rich in Washington:

@BillyLundun: Dan Rather was assaulted by a pair of men, who kept repeating "What's the frequency, Kenneth?". Pretty bizarre.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Jim the Poet:

Oh hey guys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am BillyLundun:

Yes! thanks G and Rich! Dan Rather what a weird thing.
  9:11am Rachel Bo Bachel:

Handy do you ever listen to New Adventures in Hi Fi? It’s one of my favorite REM albums. In all seriousness, Monster isn’t that great lol. But it’s a fun throwback!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am StringOFperils:

Hey, Jim! Goodbye, Charlie!
  9:13am Tinley Park Randy:

Summer of 1989!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am sphere:

hello Jim and fellow Rhetoriticians
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Handy Haversack:

Rachel, 100 percent. I LOVE that album. It, LRP, and Reckoning are probably the ones we listen to the most. But I really love New Adventures and feel it's kind of an unsung gem.

Rich: they may have been shouting "Where's the freakin' C, Kenneth"?
  9:14am JT:

the litt alternate takes on the monster 25th anniversary release are terrific
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am sonofsammydavis:

i saw someone trying to argue, in all serious-Ness, that Steel Wheels was the '2nd best studio album' the Stones ever made. He said that several big critics agreed with him... like it was a commonly held opinion. I think Robert Cristgau was one of the names he dropped. sort of blew my mind that anyone could think that. what in the hell is the reason?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am sonofsammydavis:

(bad taste?)
Avatar 9:16am TDK60:

Handy, I'm a "Murmur" guy and love "Fables of the Reconstruction" too. I even like "Up." I recall that summer of '83, my friends and I were all floored by "Murmur" (a musical curve ball at the time).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Ryansterlingvirtue:

love this band and this album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Handy Haversack:

Arrrrgh, don't tempt me like that, JT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am sphere:

I wouldn't trust Christgau's opinion.
Avatar 9:16am dk50b:

Sorry Jim, one of the seven dirty words floated over the airwaves. Last line is "I never understood, don't fuck with me, u-huh". Was just telling my daughter my daughter how much I miss Sportsy Talk. And here's the opening track to Game Theory's idiosyncratic masterwork 1987's Lolita Nation, actually recreating the incident with creepy footsteps, 7 years before R.E.M. youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am sphere:

"Everything Hurts" is a great song but you have to ignore the sappy strings at the end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am sonofsammydavis:

@sphere.... yeah, not me either, necessarily. but i don't consider the man INSANE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Handy Haversack:

Murmur and Fables are totally fantastic. A review of C&K's new EP compared it to Fables! I was stunned!
Avatar 9:18am TDK60:

Christgau? I usually ignore that grump. I usually dig things he doesn't.
  9:18am JT:

do it handy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Marley P. Dogg:

Jim the poet! Handy!! All the cool kids this morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am PaulRobeson1920:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am YETI BOB:

You're taking requests, Jim? How about "If We Wait" by GBV
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am LastWhiteRhino:

Jim , you "Animal", how da heck R U doin"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Handy Haversack:

Marley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Jim the Poet:

I always accidentally play that curse at the end!
  9:22am Will:

Christgau gave Van der Graaf Generator a D+. Time to hand in the resignation, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Ken From Hyde Park:

Fond memories of jumping around to local band Perfect Thyroid at the Rhinecliff Hotel and when they went on a break, there was a TV in the other room. MTV was playing the "Nightswimming" video and it was such a cool and lasting memory.
  9:23am mike s.:

I.m somewhat familiar with Christgau's reviews and if I recall he gave Steel Wheels a B minus. Not exactly a ringing endorsement.
Avatar 9:24am Roberto:

How can you not trust the man who once labeled Irwin Chusid "a tedious ideologue with a hustle?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am PaulRobeson1920:

Requesting “No Time” by The Guess Who

Please and thank you so much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am DonJuanTijuana:

Always love hearing some Real Kids...such an amazing band
Avatar 9:27am winston legthigh:

the last stones album i bought was undercover in '83. guess i just kinda lost interest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am StringOFperils:

B minus sounds about right. Bob Cristgau's a thrower of brick-bats. Likes to elicit some kind of response from readers, to see if they even have a pulse. He may have been the Dean, or may still be, but he's always known the whole thing is a hamburger university. I suspect all he ever hoped for was for the reader to stop reading, and to really listen and to genuinely care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Ken in Fort Worth:

I dare you to play some JFA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am PaulRobeson1920:

If not, no worries…. Hey! Nice Neil Young song! 1st time ever I’m hearing it! here or anywhere
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am B Now B:

Waxahatchee song making my morning at the moment; thank you.
Avatar 9:29am TDK60:

This is a Woody Guthrie tune, right? Dust Bowl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Hugo (NL):

Hi. @jim, what is your favourite Toxic-version?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am MasterofPuberty:

I looked up the definition of erudite, and the sample sentence was "Ken could turn any conversation into an erudite discussion."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Jim the Poet:

Toxic Avenger???
Avatar 9:33am SnackGirl:

Great music, Jim The Poet!

Avatar 9:42am TDK60:

JFA was Jody Foster's Army, a Calif. skatepunk band from the '80s.

JFA, too damn funny. I saw them as an underage kid in the 80's. They played Philly @ Kung Fu Necktie in 2019 I think. Old punks, mosh pit & everything. Best damn punk show I'd seen in year. Some guy got a compound leg fracture by the pool table, and they didn't stop playing or miss a beat. Hell I didn't even realize it until I saw the bartender mopping up a giant pool of blood on my way out.

The app on my phone usually lags behind the radio, but now it's the other way around. I guess this whole show is on 7 second delay because of the call-ins?

  11:07am Ike-O:

peace and greetings! where can i get a washing machine with a Kodo cycle?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Handy Haversack:

McGroovey, that has been the case since the "transmitter" troubles a few weeks ago. The stream on the computer and the radio on the bathroom boombox are more out of sync than ever, with the stream more solidly ahead of the radio than the radio *used to* be ahead of the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am chresti:

Right on cue maintenance fires up the leaf blower!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Jim the Poet:

Sorry East Orange! The FCC is downstairs ready to arrest me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Ken From Hyde Park:

What about East Banana? I heard that's a fine community.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am McGroovey:

Use to be that the stream was several seconds behind the radio. More the radio is behind the stream, but only by love 2 seconds, which is actually usually cool and listenable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Webhamster Henry:

No wonder I like it, it's Matmos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am McGroovey:

I can't hear the radio in the bathroom, so I take my phone on with me during my morning rituals, then carry it around while I'm looking for the things I've left in the wrong places that need to go on my body and into my pockets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Jim the Poet:

I think Matmos has a leaf blower song! The fire inspectors are here! This show is en fuego!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am McGroovey:

Ablutions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Yes:

Now we spinning !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Ken From Hyde Park:

Have we entered the rinse cycle?
  11:20am Marie:

This sounds like no washer machine I know of... there's an idea for you--musical washing machines, ie, washing machines that make music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am chresti:

Our washing machine is much louder.
  11:22am Marie:

Leaf blower song, leaf blower song! I was wondering if any bands had ever incorporated blow dryer sounds...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Jim the Poet:

My washer plays an ice cream truck song to let you know it is done
Avatar 11:22am Hubig Pie:

Kinda sounds like when all the bath towels bunch up on one side durin' the spin cycle.
Avatar 11:24am βrian:

I partially disassembled a dryer once to disable an annoying completion buzzer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Jim the Poet:

This is what it sounds like when I just wash my converse all stars
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am chresti:

I can tell the wash is done when the house stops shaking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am karlward:

My washing machine brings all the boys to the yard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Krys O.:

My first floor neighbors have a washer with the same ice cream truck signal. My washer just buzzes loudly. I usually shut that off.
Avatar 11:27am βrian:

What happens, conversely, when you don't wash your converse all stars?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am chresti:

Haha karlward. PLAY MILKSHAKE
  11:29am Marie:

I remember being in a diner once where the ceiling fan sounded like someone chewing with their mouth open, fer real
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Krys O.:

Was just dealing with extra-absorbant towels that retain half the water from the rinse cycle, forcing me to do an extra drain and spin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Jim the Poet:

Do you guys love Gain as much as I do?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Krys O.:

I'm Team Persil.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am PMD:

I have to go for ones that don't smell at all. I'm one of those people. I think I got a migraine from Gain once.
  11:35am Marie:

My mom was a Tide lady
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Handy Haversack:

Yeah, we're unflavored Seventh Generation usually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Yes:

Avatar 11:38am Juli:

This got me dancing
Avatar 11:39am winston legthigh:

why is the transmitter so slow, did it see a yellow traffic light?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Krys O.:

Persil is not heavily perfumed. I have to think of my kitties who are sensitive to other detergents I've used. The cats like to burrow under the bedspread or comforter, plus they have their fleece beds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Handy Haversack:

winston, maybe the humidity?
  11:39am Marie:

One of my bros would wash his car with Wisk and eventually his car became matte--no shine--and I inherited that, which was no problem to me

Is WMFU 90.1 operating at reduced power the last few minutes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Krys O.:

Essex County Road Resurfacing Project?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am StringOFperils:

Scented detergent is an issue where you're re-washing fabric face-masks.Can't breathe that all day.
Avatar 11:41am winston legthigh:

humid air is denserer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am PMD:

Anyone every hear the story of Febreze? Apparently when they first tried it it was unscented and it worked really well but people didn't know it was working because they had lived with their smells. And now they scent it. I wish they'd go back to unscented.
Avatar 11:42am winston legthigh:

the transmitter is playing ultimate care 1
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am fred:

This was appropriate as I'm washing bed sheets now (I don't have a washing machine, so it's kind of an ordeal)
  11:42am Danny in Poughkeepsie:

Hey Jim the Poet. Why aren’t there Sportsy Talk on the archives?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Krys O.:

@fred: Are rocks and a river involved?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am PMD:

@fred, I think I'd just use them for 6 months and buy new ones rather than wash.
  11:44am queems:

OMG KRISTINA IS SO COOL
  11:44am WoodsyOwl:

If this show has been a nightmare, then terrify me MORE and kill me like that Twilight Zone episode.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am fred:

@Krys O.: that would actually be easier, but there's no river nearby
  11:46am Listener Robert:

I listen to WFMU, where the music is so hot you could get scalded, if you didn't wear protective clothing. That's the phrase that pays. Well, at least Andy pays, if they ever run that promotion again.
  11:47am Marie:

Hey Fred, maybe a kiddy pool would help @). Thanks, Jim!!!!
  11:48am Marie:

I love this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am YETI BOB:

Soft Cell? Oh dear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am StringOFperils:

Ha ha. Ahem, BOYS not CELL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Krys O.:

I used to have to bring my clothes in a cart to the laundromat. It was downhill going and uphill coming back. Ugh. Bought the washer and dryer when a previous 2nd floor neighbor was moving out. I still get a workout going from the 3rd floor down to the basement and back numerous times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am YETI BOB:

That's the Soft Boys, fronted by the inimitable Robyn Hitchcock
Avatar 11:49am Hubig Pie:

This no sound like Tainted Love
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am xtrakrispy:

yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Jim the Poet:

I think you have to search Bronwyn C's archives. The last show she did was called Pig Talk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Krys O.:

Soft Boys of Summer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am fred:

@Danny: I think that's because the name changed. Maybe they're here with other Bronwyn shows: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Handy Haversack:

Now I want to hear a track by Cell Boys so we can compare.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am StringOFperils:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Handy Haversack:

Well, *I* think this show has been a model of professionalism and precision. I found that each thing followed the thing before it and led directly to the thing after. If linear time wanted to get all squirrelly, this show would have set it right straight!

Thanks, Jim! And thanks for the bday wishes for K8!
