I've shared this on Facebook before (several times!), but I had a summer job in the newsroom of Boston's all-news radio station in 1977 and saw the first bulletins come in over the teletype machines reporting Elvis' death.

My mom is a huge Elvis fan...was in our backyard with her friends, having a few drinks celebrating her birthday. The neighbor's kid was watching the Mike Douglas show, and shouted out his back door (knowing full well how my mom is obsessed with Elvis) - "Hey - Elvis just croaked!" That was the first time I saw my mother cry.

Yes this day will live in infamy of the day that Elvis Presley died. I was Spinnin Records at KYLO radio in Alamogordo New Mexico when the calls started coming in for me to play Elvis music. Unfortunately the station had zero Elvis records.

There is a new Elvis biopic coming soon, with Tom Hanks as Col. Parker. Directed by Baz Luhrmann. Ugh. The only interesting thing is, from what I've read, Sister Rosetta Tharp and Steve Binder are prominent characters. But still, looks like a mess.
