Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Diana in Hungary:

This Anna & Elizabeth is wonderful! They remind me very slightly of the Roches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm David Dichelle:

Yes, a great duo, surely not the last time we hear them on the show.

Hey there, D. Theo!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:32pm melinda:

Far out!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:33pm melinda:

Nettlebed Collective is a great name. Reminds me of Dust on the Nettles.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Stanley:

Nettlebed is a village in Buckinghamshire in England. I was there on a walking holiday when I was a young man. It was very pretty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm David Dichelle:

I suppose it has something to do with the TV series, or maybe it's just where Clarke Peters lives.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Threemoons:

Where is the picture for today from? Judging from the foliage, I'm gonna guess the Bronx or Germany
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm David Dichelle:

Almost all of the pictures are from in and around Leipzig. This week is a weird spot I stumbled across a couple of days ago around an hour by bike outside of town.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Phillippe:

Leipzig needs to have a conversation with Jamaica about bogarting the sun
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Threemoons:

@DD thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm David Dichelle:

The last couple of summers were hot and much too dry, not so much this year.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Diana in Hungary:

Wow to Kim Doo Soo's "Bohemian"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm David Dichelle:

One of my new discoveries this past week, in fact.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Threemoons:

This Savina Yannatou is gorgeous.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm melinda:

@Threemoons I concur
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Diana in Hungary:

Oh wow... this melody (of "El Sueño de la Hija del Rey") is often sung at B'nai Jeshurun in NYC, with the piyut "Shahar Avakeshkha" as the words.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Threemoons:

@Diana I KNEW the tune was familiar! Have heard that variation at Chabad LIC and Lab/Shul services.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm David Dichelle:

Yes, it is a Sephardic folk song, here in a slightly Ladino Spanish, I believe. This version is about the dream of the daughter of the king of France.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Threemoons:

I once went to a Sephardic music symposium at Cornell a zillion years ago when I was a student there, back when wooly mammoths made their stately migrations across the Finger Lakes Ice Sheets. Anyway, there is a VERY long tradition of cantors adapting local melodies for prayers. One of the performers then showed us footage (and then performed) a prayer that she heard in a Jewish community in India--I forgot which piyut it was but it was sung to the tune of the standard British Navy Hornpipe tune!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Threemoons:

And two of my frequent dining companions at my dorm went to the same shul growing up; they grew up singing one of the Rosh Hashana prayers to the tune of Yellow Submarine!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Stanley:

Unmistakably Márta
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:00pm melinda:

@Threemoons I have a compilation of music of the Jewish people of Uganda that I learned about from Bob Brainen's show, and many of the tunes sound like Protestant hymns.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Michael 98145:

Beautiful set.

BTW, apropos nothing, i just got some great Raven stamps from the USPS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm David Dichelle:

3M: Reform Beatles?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Michael - can the stamps be used to send messages by raven?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Michael 98145:

Probably. Ravens are quite clever.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:06pm chris in the redwoods:

wow! love this Binka Dobreva.
alos, hellos all around, David and folks.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Michael 98145:

this singing strikes a chord in me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm David Dichelle:

I suppose the question is whether the words/lyrics fit the other melody. Similarly, one weird quirk here was that the GDR (East German) anthem was written so that you could sing the West German, now German again, anthem to the melody of the East German anthem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm David Dichelle:

Hello, Chris!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Michael 98145:

Hi doc!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:14pm doctorjazz:

Hey, LD!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Threemoons:

@Melinda that's interesting RE Uganda!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Threemoons:

@DD LOL that same prayer could not only be sung to Yellow Submarine, but to "Puff the Magic Dragon" (which has been adapted for other prayers).
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Threemoons:

@DD throw it on please!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Revolver anniversary today includes YellowSub in fact...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Yvang:

The gallo langage is a consequence of roman occupation in brittany. Maybe Asterix was speaking gallo.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Threemoons:

@RR it's a sign from the beyond!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm David Dichelle:

Greetings Hubig Pie and Doctor J!
  1:24pm Marie:

Hey David and fellow riders--onboard and totally digging! My guess today is Belgium
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm David Dichelle:

Welcome aboard, Marie!
  1:25pm Marie:

Gracias! How do you say thanks in Esperanto?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Diana in Hungary:

For a couple of seconds this "Ulman" reminded me of Camper Van Beethoven. I think I'm thinking of the last song on Key Lime Pie.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Diana in Hungary:

I meant to put "Modal Scales" in quotes, not Ulman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm David Dichelle:

Marie: It's "dankon"
  1:29pm Marie:

Dankon, David! "Dank On!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm coelacanth∅:

greetings David and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm David Dichelle:

Nedankinde, Marie!
Avatar 🚂 1:30pm Will in Norman:

is that a kora I hear?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm David Dichelle:

Salutations, Coel - and Will!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm David Dichelle:

'Tis indeed a kora, as performed by Solo Cissokho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm David Dichelle:

Diana: That could be an influence. Funny, since they often play more traditional sounding pieces.
Avatar 🚂 1:33pm Will in Norman:

nice. West african kora music is some of the world's most beautiful music imo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm David Dichelle:

This is kora meets kanklės (Lithuanian kantele) in fact.
Avatar 🚂 1:35pm Will in Norman:

oooh even better. bardic strings colliding!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Jan Turkenburg:

Lovely music. Hi everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Jan!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Stanley:

I have had the immense pleasure of seeing in concert the West African greats - Toumani Diabaté, Youssou N'Dour, Salif Keita and Djelimady Tounkara. I feel very privilaged.
Avatar 🚂 1:49pm Will in Norman:

I've seen Salif Keita, but none of those others. Privileged indeed!
Avatar 1:50pm Jay S:

Hi, David and everybody! Ah, the great voice of Ricardo Lemvo! Thanks for playing this.
Avatar 🚂 1:50pm Will in Norman:

but I did get to see ethiopian singer mahmoud ahmed perform once in washington dc. 1 of the most memorable shows I've been to
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Stanley:

In fact the Salif Keita gig was probably the best I have ever been to. In the encore, we were down the front and he personally pulled me and some others onto the stage, so we could dance with him and the singers and players!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm David Dichelle:

Hello, Jay - my pleasure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm David Dichelle:

Stanley, what a wonderful moment! Was it a large venue?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Threemoons:

YAY! Thank you DD!!
  1:53pm headcleaner:

I had the (in retrospect dark), but sublime pleasure of seeing what was apparently Ballaké Sissoko's final performance on his "impossible to replace" Kora before it was destroyed by zombie TSA agents - https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/feb/06/malian-musician-kora-ballake-sissoko-dismantled-tsa-us-customs

Avatar 🚂 1:54pm Will in Norman:

that is just terrible, i'm convinced the TSA hates music. safely transporting instruments is nigh impossible on planes
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Stanley:

David - yes, pretty much. The Usher Hall in Edinburgh (capacity 2,200) but he needed a large stage for his sixteen piece group.
Will. Salif Keita. Absolutely incredilbe.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Stanley:

I get goosepimples just thinking about it!
Avatar 🚂 1:55pm Hubig Pie:

Tunisia to win

I believe that's a six dollar bet, I'm good for it , I promise

Avatar 🚂 2:03pm Will in Norman:

I was listening to Turkmen music earlier this morning!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Michael 98145:

Ask your doctor if Turkmenistan is right for you.

Dankon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm David Dichelle:

Thank you for checking in, WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm David Dichelle:

Will, thanks that was the word I was looking for - and that is quite a coincidence!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Phillippe:

I think Turkmenistan once lost to Brazil in beach volleyball -- IN BRAZIL! -- so I'm going to count this as a win.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:08pm fred:

Cool! I have heard very little music from Turkmenistan, and I don't think I ever saw a musician from there. I'm happy to have that gap filled
Avatar 🚂 2:09pm Will in Norman:

on modern turkmen orthography - just remember the 'w' is like an english 'v' or a german 'w'
  2:10pm headcleaner:

The Brezhnev era busts a groove (strictly speaking we would have had either Andropov or Chernenko at the helm of the CPSU at the time of this album's release; but psychologically and aesthetically it all rolls into 'late-Brezhnev')
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm David Dichelle:

Fred: Yes, this segment is dedicated to filling all those gaps, including my own.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Threemoons:

Turkmenistan! That's the one run by a despot who makes his book required reading in all schools IIRC.....

Aaah here we go: www.atlasobscura.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm David Dichelle:

Will: Yes, the /w/ part is easy for me over here.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:18pm fred:

I did see Oghlan Bakhshi a couple of times, but he was born in Iran. The hat he wears in concerts is definitely Turkmen though (distinctive hats are a thing in traditional music from central Asia)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm David Dichelle:

Headcleaner: There is that one rocking version of the Soviet anthem that perfectly exemplifies what you're saying, it can be found on YouTube.
Avatar 🚂 2:19pm Will in Norman:

I have a great soviet lp of funky versions of russian folksongs from around this period, it's fantastic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm David Dichelle:

What's it called?
Avatar 🚂 2:21pm Will in Norman:

'the Melodia Ensemble Plays Popular Russian Folk And Soviet Songs'
www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Will!
Avatar 🚂 2:22pm Will in Norman:

when I bought it i assumed it was just typical balalaika orchestra stuff, especially since melodiya was the main state-owned label in the USSR, i was pleasantly surprised when i put it on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm David Dichelle:

This one seems to be about Turkmenistan.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Michael 98145:

@David - yup - in stark contrast to the physical metabolism of most of the Politburo members at the time - the early 80s were a vibrant and pulsing time in the SU, musically
