Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 10:00am Handy Haversack:

Greetings, David and Voyageurs. I hope to make it in at some point, but on our first day out if COVID isolation, I have to do a bunch of stuff.

Going to register my Random Road Random Guess: Sierra Leone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am David Dichelle:

Thanks for checking in early, Handy. I hope all is now well on your end. And your guess is duly registered!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 11:58am WR:

'ello commuters. Will ride along for the first hour and then get off to meet a friend for lunch.

And I choose Uruguay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm David Dichelle:

And welcome back to Europe, Diana!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Carmichael:

Hey, a fake elephant!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Yvang:

Hello Travelers! Hello David! I'll be sitting quietly in the train, reading a book, checking my emails, I will interact with you if I feel I can bring something to the conversation... My guess for this week is Spain!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

GutenDiaz Riders !
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Phillippe:

Hi all, just sticking what's left of my head in to say hello and place my guess of Brazil into play. Will be listening, of course.
Avatar 🚂 12:03pm TDK60:

Wie Gehts, David! I'm a stubborn stick-with-it for Suriname.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Diana in Hungary:

My guess is Argentina.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm David Dichelle:

And hello Yvang, RRN, Phillippe, TDK!
Avatar 🚂 12:05pm TDK60:

I know I'll someday get impatient and switch to Laos, then Suriname will come up. Hee...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Michael 98145:

I see Hungary hasn't made an appearance ... yet www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Threemoons:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm David Dichelle:

Hey there 3M!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Set is already good for the soul.
Glad we're underway...
Avatar 🚂 12:06pm TDK60:

No, Laos not on the list. I know what: Bodega Pop show did a Laos special, I think.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:06pm fred:

Hello David and fellow travelers. Handy isn't fully recovered, so I'll register a bet on The Gambia for his sake, he's to be credited if it does come up
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:06pm David (in London):

Well, as Carmichael has swooped in with Uruguay (my usual), instead of doubling up, I'm going Chile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm David Dichelle:

Hello Fred! Handy actually dropped his guess of Sierra Leone at the top of the page, but Gambia sounds good too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm David Dichelle:

Yes, we did have Vietnam and Cambodia in two consecutive weeks. And I did expect Laos to follow but it still hasn't.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:10pm fred:

@David: I saw his post, proof his recovery isn't complete yet
Avatar 🚂 12:11pm TDK60:

David, Stoke Newington musician and sometime barman, faring fine?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm David Dichelle:

Fred, just an odd sighting in a random spot - could be the remnants of an ancient elephant cutout site.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm David Dichelle:

Welcome, Chresti and Alex!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm David (in London):

TDK, I feel my life is in the right place with that as my descriptor. Yes, all is well thank you sir. A holiday is hoving into view, which is sending spirits up.

How are things with you?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Michael 98145:

@David-i-L, holiday ?
Avatar 🚂 12:17pm TDK60:

Avatar 🚂 12:19pm TDK60:

Oh, it's Roudiness time. David, I was listening to your archived shows. On your July 8th show you played Roud 137: "Widecombe Fair"/"Tom Pearce." In summer 2018 I hiked, camped across Dartmoor National Park in Devon, England. I stayed two nights in tiny, pretty Widecombe! There were some plaques about the six men on a horse referenced in the song.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:20pm David (in London):

Michael, a modest one by the standards of some years, but still hugely looking forward to it: a week in Lavenham in Suffolk. It's an amazing place, like stepping back into the 17th century. Seen to great effect in the Brit horror classic 'Witchfinder General'.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:21pm WR:

@Yvang! Thank you for pointing me to Antoine Volodine. He does have several books translated to English. I'm only 40 pages in on the 2014 book Radiant Terminus but think I am going to be reading it all. First new to me fiction writer that I can connect to in a decade or so.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:21pm David (in London):

TDK, was that that when you were told off for wearing shorts? Given a 'ticking off' in fact.
I'll get my coat...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:22pm David (in London):

David - that's an idea. A DOUBLE BLIND random road where even you don't know where it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm David Dichelle:

Greetings Hubig Pie and sb/p!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Little Danny:

Greetings David, friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm David Dichelle:

David: That accounts for the other two hours of each show.
Avatar 🚂 12:24pm TDK60:

Dil: Yes! same week, except that was further south in Harford.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm David Dichelle:

Hey Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Why can't we have actual pubs where we sing this stuff
...& other nice things...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Carmichael:

My holiday is meager by comparison. Spending the weekend in Portland collecting my daughter, driving around the rim of Crater Lake and visiting Bend, where the only independently owned Blockbuster is still going strong (Mrs. Carmichael's obsession).
Avatar 12:25pm still b/p:

There's something pleasant about how genial and casual this one feels.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm dutchtheo:

Hello David and subway hobo's, Cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Little Danny:

Get yourself a Blockbuster card today!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Carmichael:

Kirkpatrick is a fine button accordion player who was part of Brass Monkey, Steeleye Span and many other British folk groups.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Yvang:

@WR : You're welcome. I have to try as well as I haven't started yet but I know he's a good and very singular writer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm David Dichelle:

TDK: Yes, there are so many cultural and geographical references in the songs. And a lovely place you found for your trip. I was in the area once as well, though briefly.
Avatar 🚂 12:27pm TDK60:

Hola chresti, around here somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm David Dichelle:

Cheers, dutchtheo!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:29pm fred:

@RRN63: That would be great, but too expensive for me to join physically. The pub in our minds will have to do, mine says Guinness flows
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm David Dichelle:

Carmichael: Indeed he was, although only briefly with Steeleye.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Diana Senechal:

The Jack Rutter rendition is my favorite so far.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm David (in London):

Year ago I arranged to meet my friend Peter (Chinese, from Guangzhou) in a pub called The Barleymow. He was rather late because the poor chap had been wandering around for ages looking for Bar Limo.

Avatar 🚂 12:39pm TDK60:

That song seemed to have a cheerful vibe, tho I've not read the lyrics. Doesn't sound like
a jealousy-cum-murder tale.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Brian in UK:

Hello David and Random Road obsessives. A bottle of Banks's Amber for me.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm David Dichelle:

Hello, Brian - sending your order down for triple confirmation or perhaps a Trippel instead?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm David Dichelle:

And greetings, Doctor J.!
Avatar 🚂 12:45pm TDK60:

Lookin' for a pub? The Sheena's Jungle Room stream has a UK show that emanates from a make-believe pub, the Flange and Frigate. Mostly '60s-'70s UK rock. On Fridays 4-6 Jersey City time. DJ Georgy Girl.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm fred:

@DiL: I know, a friend once got confused because the pub we were supposed to meet was in Rue de Montreuil in Paris, and she looked for it in Rue de Paris in Montreuil. She did figure it out, no golden harp there
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Brian in UK:

Bit early for a Trippel.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:46pm David (in London):

fred, ha ha, just one small detail out.
Hi Brian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm David Dichelle:

Brian in UK, How are you doing?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm fred:

@DiL: In her defense, I was hanging out far more often in Montreuil than Paris (but no Guinness there)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Brian in UK:

TDK60, as mentioned on Scott's show yesterday, still getting used to Spencer's demise. It was so sudden.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm fred:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, everyone. Sorry I'm late. Continued sympathy, Brian. I am just back from a brief stop at the vet with Bagpipe, who's fine (inshallah), but broke down thanking them for their help with Lulu. It's just not easy, and it shouldn't be, I guess.
Avatar 🚂 12:59pm Bas NL:

Hello David! Hello all! Throwing Romania in the hamper before cycling home..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm David Dichelle:

Welcome back, Handy, hope you're okay.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Carmichael:

Well, our county health director just issued mandatory indoor masking requirements for everyone, regardless of vaccination status.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm David Dichelle:

And hello, Bas - have a good cycle!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Diana Senechal:

Oh, wonderful! Rejtelmek! Thank you!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:02pm fred:

@Handy: I hope you and K8 manage as best as you can. Crying is OK
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm David Dichelle:

Thank you for the great suggestion, Diana!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:03pm David (in London):

Hi Bas.
Brian, very sorry to hear that.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, fred. We are checking things off the list for getting out of town. The car had a rotted exhaust system, but we're plunging ahead. Really hoping to get out of here and get some peace.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Brian in UK:

Carmichael It only took people over here a blink of an eye to stop wearing masks if not compulsory. Only 100 deaths in the last month, that's alright then.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:06pm fred:

@Handy: Are you taking Voltron along?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm David Dichelle:

Brian, sorry to hear about your loss.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Carmichael:

We have an active population of hysterical anti-vaxxers over here, Brian. Should make for great entertainment, if nothing else.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Brian in UK:

Mind you up to two years ago there were up to 1900 car related deaths, not counting injuries, here. Now that is the acceptable side of the car pandemic!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Brian in UK:

I read that 99% of cases recently were unvaxxed people.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Carmichael:

Yes, so the obvious solution is to punish the vaxxed.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Handy Haversack:

I feel pretty punished, Carmichael.

fred, Voltron and Callipygian have to hold down the fort.
Avatar 🚂 1:12pm TDK60:

I passed by an anti-vax party/rally in Central Park last weekend while I walked to a concert. I must admit I let loose with some loud, rude English.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Brian in UK:

How dumb is it for people to say it challenges their freedom. Better stop wearing a seat belt too.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:12pm northguineahills:

I'm going w/ a curveball, and predicting Moldova.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:13pm fred:

@Brian: true, but I haven't heard of a vaccine against being hit by a car. I avoid some shows because of anti-vax now. It sucks
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Brian in UK:

ngh is a curveball a new cocktail?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm David Dichelle:

Hey NGH, let's see if it catches the corner of the plate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm ChukAmok:

Hi David, TDK, Handy, and all commuters aboard.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:14pm northguineahills:

What Brian said. The first time I interacted w/ people was after I was vaxxed. I got invited to play a music fest in the Catskills and got to hang out w/ friends in Brooklyn for the first time in 5 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, RRN!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Brian in UK:

Thanks David(s).
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:15pm northguineahills:

@Brian: an American colloqial baseball reference (and I rare watch the game)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm ChukAmok:

As someone who lives in an area with only a 40% vaccination rate the punishment from the ignorant and selfish is constant. Yee haw.
Avatar 🚂 1:15pm TDK60:

Where do you reside, ChukAmok?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:16pm fred:

@Brian: That wasn't about you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm ChukAmok:

TDK60: Upstate South Carolina.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Brian in UK:

ngh, used more as a cliche nowadays? Bullshit management speak.
Avatar 🚂 1:17pm TDK60:

ChukAmok, does Upstate mean north, or the Appalachian mountain area?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:18pm northguineahills:

@ChukAmok: I'm in FL, and were hovering below 60%, and I thought that was bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm ChukAmok:

Ever told off someone in a supermarket who said they were "offended" by the fact you were wearing (still) wearing a mask in public? Asking because I am running out of other options.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:18pm northguineahills:

we're....
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Brian in UK:

fred, I know. Car were the first example I could think of.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm David (in London):

This is a jaunty little number.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm ChukAmok:

Upstate means north west, near the mountains.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm fred:

@Brian in UK: "Bullshit management speak". Pleonasm much?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Handy Haversack:

Once again, "they" keep moving back when the rain is supposed to start, which makes the three miles of errands while carrying a backpack full of rain gear a little less charming than it was when I packed.

Hey, ChukAmok. Maybe try, "It's a good things that feelings have no influence on science. Or on viruses. And you're welcome."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm ChukAmok:

Hey Handy: Are Creek and Kills still playing that show at Mama Tried on 08/14?
Avatar 🚂 1:20pm TDK60:

ChukAmok, I've been through those hills.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:20pm northguineahills:

@ChukAmok: I'm still wearing a mask in public, even my fundie family members wear one in public (but, then again my father is a retired physician).
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Handy Haversack:

Yes, ChukAmok! C&K and Fisty, 8 PM and 9 PM, respectively. Their album release show is the next week at 18th Ward.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Yvang:

V as variant roud?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Brian in UK:

ChukAmok, is there a male 'Karen' equivalent?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm ChukAmok:

Excellent! It's looking increasingly likely that I will be in town that weekend for a reunion-type event on that Sunday coincidentally also at 18th Ward. I will try to make it to that show!
Avatar 🚂 1:23pm TDK60:

Overall US vax rate only 48%. NYC is still in the 60s which is surprising after all we went through. NYC govt to offer $100 to folks showing up at city-run vax sites.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Handy Haversack:

Time to get more vaccinations, TDK60.

ChukAmok, that's great!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Carmichael:

@Brian, "Ken".

ChukAmok, I read about a cashier, in the US South I think, who was shot dead after requesting an entering customer to mask up.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Brian in UK:

So the woman should be Barbie?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:25pm fred:

Ken can get even more Toxic though
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Alex In Illinois:

Someone in my neighborhood claimed that our village has a low vaccination rate. This is surprising, since many houses have signs in front that start off with "In this house we believe:" and list a few things including "Science is real". Also, everyone I know is vaccinated against covid except our pets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm ChukAmok:

@Brian in the UK I'm not sure if there is a male-equivalent. Maybe Kid Rock?

@TDK60 I also read that, but can't recall where/when.
  1:28pm Marie:

Hey David and all! Listening (and enjoying). My guess today is Pakistan
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Handy Haversack:

Maybe once English speakers relearn how to use "willy-nilly," we can export that to the rest of the world (willy-nilly).
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:29pm northguineahills:

I find almost all foreign languages are peppered w/ English words, formal and slang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Marie - glad you're enjoying!
Avatar 🚂 1:30pm TDK60:

ChukAmok. I found it: 41 year old Laquitta Willis, cashier shot dead.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Brian in UK:

Ah for the days when most of the world map was pink. See where it got us.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Diana Senechal:

northguineahills: Yes, in Hungarian "full" is often used in slang to mean "completely," and "valid" is used to mean "valid." So people might say, "full egyedül" (completely alone) or "valid gondolat" (valid thought).
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Michael 98145:

love languages!

When I saw that in getting tentatively back to business, cruise lines would put area and event restrictions on unvaccinated passengers, I thought, great, after what we've seen on airliners and in stores, how compliant and chill are drunk cruise passengers gonna be when they get chafed at being aboard but barred and segregated?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm ChukAmok:

@TDK60 that's very sad and a totally unnecessary loss of life.
On that note: I am loading up my car with cakes to deliver up to the farmers market two hours away. Will be listening from the road! Later all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm David Dichelle:

Diana: What always gets me is the use of "hallo" to say goodbye, which I guess is influenced by "szia".
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Handy Haversack:

Good selling, ChukAmok. Keep 'em sweet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm David Dichelle:

Thanks ChukAmok, take care!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Michael 98145:

"ano" is yes in Czech
Avatar 🚂 1:38pm TDK60:

Chuk: Sad and it makes me angry. The other day while I walked a maskless fellow in a car with windows open, gave me an odd stare-down as I was masked. I could tell; he had a derogatory smile on his face. I felt danger, kept walking
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 🚂 1:39pm TDK60:

Sorry to any train riders trying to escape this modern (or should I say post-modern?) stupidity.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:40pm northguineahills:

Then again, to reference Handy, English has always absorbed foreign words willy-nilly.....
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:41pm fred:

I think English is a trader's language, amendable if it helps cutting a deal. French is a diplomat's language, made for mind games to make you feel inferior if you slip on one of the many insane rules
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Diana Senechal:

David Dichelle: Yes, the "hallo" for "goodbye" throws me off too. I agree, it's probably influenced by "szia," which can mean either "hello" or "goodbye."
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Diana Senechal:

This Rüya Çağla song is beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Little Danny:

@Fred: English as a trader's language totally makes sense.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Brian in UK:

As Napoleon B said, we are a nation of shopkeepers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm David Dichelle:

Diana: Yes, the first time I heard the goodbye "hallo", I was very confused. Much laughter ensued.
Avatar 🚂 1:48pm TDK60:

Isn't English a sort of western Frisian-Dutch with some French and Celtic language thrown in?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm David Dichelle:

TDK: Not to forget all the Nordic in the mix.
  1:51pm stanlé:

If you're into indigenous Mexican and feminist stories, I recoment Corazon de Mezquite. It's about a girl from the Yorame group in northern Sinloa who wants to play la arpa jarocha, which is only traditionally played by men. Found it on HBO Max.

I know, fred. One day, the Gambia will have its day.

Bolivia and Paraguay are the two South American countries without ocean access, if I remember seventh grade aright.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:10pm David (in London):

Damn, Bolivia is rocking hard in this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm David Dichelle:

Yes, Bolivia lost its Pacific access to Chile in some 19th-century troubles, I believe.

Avatar 🚂 2:17pm Bas NL:

Not Piptsjilling by chance, @Alex? I love Piptsjilling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm David Dichelle:

I suppose you can say that the Angles, Saxons, and Frisians were close neighbors until they weren't.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Alex In Illinois:

@northguineahills: I have scrolled back, but I can't find the first mention of a country that did not ban indigenous languages. Was it New Zealand?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:26pm northguineahills:

@Alex: THe Kiwis made Maori and official langage in 1987, but was only suppressed until after WWII, making them one of the earlier nations to allow the indigineous language be taught and be legal.

βrian, yeah, that was an interesting choice.

Watching a Secrets of the Dead doc last night on early England, Tintagel, Arthur, presence of Angles, Saxons, etc. and it drove me nearly mad -- mad, I say -- with the too-standard writing and production style.

"What was the connection....?"
"Were these people...?"
"But how...?"
"Then why...?"
"Can this...?
Daaaamn, just drive Excalibur through my chest and let me be done with your infestation of superfluous questions and relentless time-wasting, and the phony set-ups and dialogue with archeologists and academics.
