Hi Blast-Off-Girl, Jim Gordon's story is such a tragedy.. I think of him often given all the sessions he played on that I still listen to and love.. Similar to Hal Blaine, Jim Gordon was always really busy.. even before he was playing out with rock'n roll royalty. I know he's was sentenced to life all those years ago, and last I heard he was in California.. I recall reading an interview with him in Rolling Stone many years ago.. the last thing he said, had to do with starting a band, or joining one that already existed at the facility.. incredibly sad, haunting and disturbing to this day.. I hope Jim is surviving inside with whatever can afford him the the most peace..

Prguitar - yes, he’s incarcerated at California Medical Facility in Vacaville, where I work. I pass by his dorm multiple times per day and it blows my mind that I’m across the hall from someone who played on so many famous songs and albums. We used to have a prison band, but COVID changed a lot of our programming. I really hope he decides to play drums again.

My dad was a Navy cook in the South Pacific during WW II. Of course, even for cooks & typists there was some danger. My dad came right off the farm & said he almost died of homesickness.

Coelacanthø - he’s at a prison psychiatric facility. He’s up for parole again next year. The governor has been releasing a lot of the elderly inmates.

And the plane ride over is one of the funny things about Vietnam: a lot of guys didn’t go over with a unit. You go over as an individual, you don’t know anybody, you don’t go over with a unit you trained with. Some units do, but in my case, that was not the case. I was just a replacement, so I went by myself. I didn’t know anybody, and all of a sudden you’re in a plane with guys you’ve never seen before, and they’re all going to Vietnam with you. So there’s a certain instant camaraderie about all of that, you know, you get close to people really quickly when you’re in a similar situation like that. January ’67, I’m on my way to Vietnam.

Needless to say if I was in close proximity, as you are on the day to day, I would really want to tell Jim how much he improved my quality of life through his music, as impossible as it might be to speak with him. I would ask gently if he considered starting to play again.. anything to bring deep joy back into his life.. I also often think if mental health care (a hot topic along with mindfullness these days), was less stigmatized back then, Jim wouldn't have gotten himself in the trouble he did.. Yes, Covid has changed everything one way or another.. It's a pleasure to meet you here! I hope our chat will bring more light, to replace the darkness.. take good care!
