This is the first time I have heard this show. Excellent sets!

Welcome, Alex, and thanks!

If you want a fun movie to watch, if you're into music, feminism, and the Yorame indigneous community in northern Sinoloa (Mexico), Corazon de Mezquite (heart of corarazon) is a good film. Found it on HBO max last weekend. It's about a girl who wants to learn to play the arpa jarocha (native harp), but only men are traditionally allowed to play it. Recommended.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm

oops. the title is heart of the Mexquite, can't multi-task
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
Alex In Illinois:

Wow! A real photograph record! I was kind of enjoying the skip
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm

NGH, sounds like interesting movie. Will watch out for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm

OK, that Kronos Quartet track was ironic, considering my mention of a Sinoalonse film.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm

Until the 2000s, indigenous languages in Mexico were forbidden to be taught, and many are close to being lost. Mexico, US, and Canada have a lot in common.
  Swag For Life Member 9:11pm

Kismet, ngh.
  Swag For Life Member 9:14pm

I think only Paraguy among the Americas actually has a state-promoted indigenous language.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Tamar and where-dos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm

@Tamar: Paraguay had a mandated state policy in the 19th c that all citizens, no matter their origion, native or European, must inter-marry. They are the outlier in the Americas. That said, Paraguay was a curious place back then. "Let's go to war w/ Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay!" That will end well.
  Swag For Life Member 9:20pm

Howdy, Ken From Hyde Park!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm

Is this Dolls from the first album or another recording? Sounds different than I remember.
Avatar 9:21pm

first LP, but could be an alternate take -- ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm

(spoiler, they lost nearly 40% of their population and nearly half their land).
  Swag For Life Member 9:22pm

Yep, 1st LP, on LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm

Like this Rokes cover (always liked this song)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm

NGH, I was amazed when I went to the Mexico City equivilant to the New York Natural History Museum. The first floor the expected early civilization big stone stuff. Then when I got to the second floor, all dedicated to the many indigenous cultures. Until then I had no clue there are so many and many with some surviving culture and tradition. I don't know about the state of the indigenous languages, but probably most are in the "let's try to document what we can before it's totally gone" stage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm

@WR: Been to that museum. District Federal (Mexico City) and Nuevo Leon (Monterrey) are much more liberal then the rest of nation. I believe it was 1998 when a federal bill allowed indigenous languages allowed to be taught in schools.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm

and around the corner from the museum, past the cathedral, is an archeological dig of a pre-Aztec temple.
Avatar 9:32pm

LOVING this Hectorine album -- thanks, Tamar!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm

My visit to Mexico City was about 15 years ago. Went one other time in 91. Didn't bump into the archeological dig. When I was there about 15 years ago for work there was a mix up and I had 3 or 4 days to be a tourist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm

slugluv1313, quick search reveals that Hectorine release is on bandcamp
Avatar 9:43pm

@ WR -- thanks!
yes, DEFINITELY on my list for next Bandcamp Friday :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm

@WR: I believed they started in 2010. It was literally right behind the national cathedral, so , it took a while to get the permits to start the dig.
Avatar 9:47pm

i think "Blue Sky" was the song that stopped me in my tracks (played here on FMU) -- and she does a killer version of "Song to the Siren" too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm

Thanks Tamar, I have enjoyed drifting along with the delightful flow of your show.
  Swag For Life Member 9:55pm

Thanks for listening, all!
