Hi Yvang, listener james, headcleaner!
Avatar 12:08pm Sem:

Hello, Tony, and the TapeHiss devoted / TapeHIss curious alike.
Avatar 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

I'd say the chances of anyone guessing today's mystery LP-under-the-cassettes are next to nil, because the record is quite obscure and because not much of the cover is showing .... so, I'll just give the game away. It's the Solid British Hat Band's "Goodbye Rainbow" LP: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 12:09pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Sem!
Avatar 12:12pm Tony Coulter:

This tape is certainly giving you the hiss you came for.

Avatar 12:20pm Tony Coulter:

Had no idea what delta sleep was, so I just looked it up. Here's what google sez: "Delta sleep is also known as slow wave sleep (SWS) or deep sleep. It comprises both sleep stages 3 and 4. These are characterized by slow, high-amplitude waves with a frequency of less than 2 Hz and an amplitude of at least 75 mV."
Avatar 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

As for peptide: "a compound consisting of two or more amino acids linked in a chain, the carboxyl group of each acid being joined to the amino group of the next by a bond of the type -OC-NH-."
Avatar 12:22pm Tony Coulter:

All clear now?

I guess this is a Variant Peptide...
Avatar 12:40pm Tony Coulter:

Just googled "variant peptide." Here's the first thing that came up: "Using this database, we then developed a data analysis workflow for variant peptide identification in shotgun proteomics."
Avatar 12:41pm Tony Coulter:

Shotguns and deep sleep don't mix.

Avatar 12:58pm Little Danny:

Oooh this sounds good.
Avatar 12:59pm Little Danny:

Hi Tony, all!
Avatar 12:59pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Little Danny!
Avatar 1:00pm Little Danny:

Any sense of where Illusionist was from, Tony?
Avatar 1:01pm solo mon:

I assume he just… disappeared??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Rich in Washington:

It's Doug Henning.
Avatar 1:02pm Tony Coulter:

@ Little Danny: Just a guess. The accent kind of sounds Eastern European to me ... though one (?) track is sung in French. The short answer is: I really don't know.
Avatar 1:02pm Little Danny:

Hehe
Avatar 1:02pm solo mon:

Doug Henning is a style icon for me.
Avatar 1:02pm northguineahills:

I can't count how many bands are named, "Illusionist".
Avatar 1:03pm Little Danny:

Ah thanks Tony! I'm really digging it thusfar.
Avatar 1:05pm solo mon:

Very cool sounds
Avatar 1:05pm ARB:

Are there any named Disillusionists?
Avatar 1:05pm solo mon:

Haha arb I literally just checked before you posted and yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Yvang:

@ARB disillusionist.bandcamp.com
Avatar 1:07pm ARB:

Haha thanks friends! And thanks Yvang! And Hi Little Danny and NGH!
Avatar 1:08pm Little Danny:

Hi Alina!
Avatar 1:09pm Tony Coulter:

If this track on now sounds familiar: I've played it before, on my "regular," non–Tape Hiss show.
Avatar 1:12pm Nick S.:

I love this! Hey, TOny!
Avatar 1:13pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Nick!!
Avatar 1:13pm Nick S.:

Sounds like it could've been a BOC song.
Avatar 1:13pm Tony Coulter:

"Don't Fear the Illusionist"
Avatar 1:14pm solo mon:

Delusionist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm David (in London):

I've regularly been a delusionist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Yvang:

This french poem seems read with a brazillian accend but I am very bad at identifying accents.
Avatar 1:18pm Tony Coulter:

Yes, I was thinking it doesn't sound like a native French accent ... thanks for confirming!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm David (in London):

Vocals a little Residents-y there.
Avatar 1:19pm Little Danny:

It all feels very Canadian to me.
Avatar 1:19pm Tony Coulter:

Secretly Canadian
Avatar 1:20pm Tony Coulter:

"be a frog"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Doug Schulkind:

Tony Coulter's show" all the tapes that are fit to hiss!
Avatar 1:23pm spodiodi:

i thought so too, DiL
Avatar 1:23pm Tony Coulter:

It's the Top Doug!
Avatar 1:23pm Little Danny:

I really can't place this in any context, musical or otherwise, or within an obvious set of references. Love.
Avatar 1:23pm Little Danny:

Le Doug: are you back in PA?
Avatar 1:25pm solo mon:

Yes every track is surprising
Avatar 1:30pm Nick S.:

Sounds a bit like Italian Metal to me. Black Hole or Paul Chain. I wish I'd been around to put some drums on these songs.
Avatar 1:35pm solo mon:

Always have love for a whistle solo
Avatar 1:36pm Nick S.:

Little Death In June in there, too.
Avatar 1:37pm Tony Coulter:

When I say some tracks sound incomplete, I don't mean I don't like them the way they are: I do. It's just that some sound like they could be demos or sketches of songs -- but I like the bareness and simplicity, so perhaps it's all "finished."
Avatar 1:37pm Tony Coulter:

Or maybe I like incomplete songs....
Avatar 1:39pm Nick S.:

Sounds a little like The Cure here. I think they sound like finished demos. A demo this good stands on its own.
Avatar 1:41pm Little Danny:

Really dig these instrumental tracks with the layered echo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Yvang:

@ Nick S.: I thought of "A forest" too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm WR:

Should I comment or should I hissatate?

Have been listening since somewhere on side two of DSIP. I plan to listen to the end.
Avatar 1:46pm Tony Coulter:

WR! Heya, hiya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm David (in London):

Hey WR.

Really liking this track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm WR:

I'm thinking of trying to get a Quadrupole Time-Of-Flight tandem Mass Spectrometer (Q-TOF) and see what sort of recordings I can make with it.
upload.wikimedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Rich in Washington:

This reminds me of a time in the early 90s where I ran my TV through a digital delay system and would leave loops of stuff from television shows on for hours. It seemed like the loops would slowly change over time due to the extreme repetition over long periods of time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm David (in London):

WR, do it. And put me down for a copy of the first album.
Avatar 1:55pm Listening Out There:

Just got here and Hi. In looking at the playlist, it reminds me that Delta Airlines does not like the name of the popular COVID variant. Not too surprising, eh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Rich in Washington:

That would be great if they sued it out of existence.
Avatar 1:57pm Tony Coulter:

Ha! Corona beer is probably not too happy these days either. (Hey there, Mr. LOT!)
Avatar 1:58pm Tony Coulter:

Then there's the Corona Mexican Restaurant in Lake Oswego, Oregon: www.coronamexicanrestaurant.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm David (in London):

Bet custom was rather slow there in 2020.
Avatar 1:59pm ottovonbqe:

they should team up to do an ad where a guy calls into work saying he is laid up with corona thanks to delta, then show him flying to a beach and drinking a corona.
Avatar 2:00pm Tony Coulter:

Ha! (Greets, ottovonbqe!)
Avatar 2:03pm ARB:

I think Corona beer had a windfall, people love irony
Avatar 2:04pm Tony Coulter:

True!
Avatar 2:06pm ARB:

Wondering if "The Rhythm of the Night" had a resurgence?
Avatar 2:06pm ARB:

This tape rules!
Avatar 2:08pm ARB:

That last one has some Legendary Pink Dots Kleine Krieg qualities
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm WR:

Absolutely no search results for "Dissonances Through the Forest Train" or "Dissonances Through the Forest Rain". Illusionist is so general that there are too many results. I do see that you played a track in March that you said is from "Dissonances Through the Forestt Rain". Assuming a typo.
Avatar 2:13pm Tony Coulter:

Not really a typo: The title is handwritten and a bit hard to make out, so it *could* be "Dissonances Through the Forestt Rain" ... assuming Mr. Illusionist doesn't know how to spell forest. I kind of went with that possibility earlier, because of the spacing on one of the tapes labels, but have now switched to "train." (Yes, I'm Mr. Inconsistent.)
Avatar 2:19pm solo mon:

I heard Delta Airlines wants to rename the variant Spirit.
Avatar 2:21pm Little Danny:

Tony, do you get a sense of where this cat was coming from? In terms of his musical influences?
Avatar 2:25pm Tony Coulter:

You know, for me, the influences are hard to pinpoint. Everyone I've played this too hears something different. For example, FMU's Bryce thought of R. Stevie Moore. I don't hear any particular strong influence, but I will say I doubt he's an isolated "outsider." I think he was definitely listening to various '80s new wave/post-punk/industrial/etc. artists.
Avatar 2:30pm Tony Coulter:

Plus, the collection it was part of was almost entirely '80s/early '90s post-punk and experimental stuff. The person I got it from doesn't have a clue who Illusionist is, though.
Avatar 2:34pm Tony Coulter:

One thing I do know: These Illusionist tapes were originally sent to Daniel Plunkett's ND magazine (I got them from D.P., indirectly).
  2:35pm davefromtoronto:

man this is like being in a horror movie...but in a good way.
Avatar 2:36pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Dave!
  2:36pm davefromtoronto:

hey tony - loving the show!
Avatar 2:37pm JB from NP:

testing testing 123
Avatar 2:37pm Tony Coulter:

Reading you loud and clear, JB. (Hiya!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm WR:

Thanks for that one key point, Tony, that the tapes were sent / submitted to ND magazine, so the maker of the tape (or someone) made some effort to get the recording heard and known. Hope they someday find this page to find that we were intrigued and enjoyed it.
  2:41pm luda:

woot!!
Avatar 2:43pm Little Danny:

Oh wow, love that there's a connection to Dan in Austin.
Avatar 2:43pm Listening Out There:

Toodles + Thx, Mr. Coulter Sir...
Avatar 2:43pm Tony Coulter:

woot, woot, luda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Rich in Washington:

It's a drag when band/artist names completely defy search engines.
Avatar 2:45pm Little Danny:

@Rich: I love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Yvang:

I love the mysteriousness.
Avatar 2:49pm ARB:

Loved the show, thank you Tony!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Rich in Washington:

You're right, LD. It's also sort of fun. Part of the give-and-take of being a musical obsessive, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Yvang:

This present track is refering to the wors a french science fiction writer named Antoine Volodine. I wonder if his books have been translated in english.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Julie:

Hey groovers, the fun continues over here until 7pm! wfmu.org...

Thanks, Tony! Loved the Selections as usual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Yvang:

Yes! Thanks for the show, Tony and for the illusions!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Julie:

this is scary
Avatar 2:55pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks for showing up, everyone! Hope to see you here next week ... when I will (probably) be playing lots of '60s and '70s psych and prog vinyl. (Plans are subject to change.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm listener james from westwood:

Always a blast, Tony—thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm WR:

Yvang, yes, there are several listed as translated. Any suggestions?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm WR:

regarding Antoine Volodine...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Yvang:

@WR : I know his existence but haven't read his books !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm WR:

Thank you Tony! Onward.
