Morning, StringOP. This was the 3rd time I saw them, and the largest group so far, around 20 if I counted right. Sistas of the Nitty Gritty (Angel Bat Dawid, etc.) opened. A great few hours of uplifting liberation music.

Beautiful, @TDK60. Good crowd?

WM:

Did any DO listeners attend the Sun Ra Arkestra performance last night at Central Park Summerstage? I was there and it was a wonderful experience. It was an inspiration to see 97 year old Marshall Allen healthy and very active. The new band does a great job of carrying on the musical and mythological tradition of the Arkestra. Also great to see a large and enthusiastic turn out of fairly young people (late twenties and up I'd say - some parents even brought their kids). I was very fortunate to have heard the Arkestra seven times or so back when Sun Ra was alive. Great to know that the legacy of Sun Ra is alive and probably more influential than ever. (And I was wearing my WFMU tee shirt which at least one person commented on as "cool.")

Told the tale of an acquaintance of a friend
...long decades ago - was in NYC, & he was tripping balls & saw SunRa in a small (?) venue. So on acid - he's got the Arkestra in full pageantry in his face - & they're actually mobile, not just sitting there ...& they proceed to present the entire History of Jazz as a progression...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am

I have yet to come up with a good response when someone hails my FMU t-shirt. Usually I go with some version of "whoo!" It's not ideal.

I hope not, @TDK60. But I'll be honest, my social skills are generally pretty rusty. I was at the first night of Vision Fest and talking to people felt very unusual.
Avatar 9:37am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Have mused that whereas Jazz used to be exclusive & Kewl - & Rawk for raving teens - they @ point reversed rolls in my experience: Rawk trendies being very cliquey - & people I'd meet @ Jazz shows all 'Hey! So - you like this too?!?'... Where FMU walks the line I'm never 1000% certain ...Cults can go either way, I suppose ...it's a kind of exclusive enthusiasm of an open secret I suppose... Just how people are in this society in the public space I suppose...
