I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

may i boogie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Krys O.:

Thanks, fred! I work at an industrial printing company and we use large rolls of plastic film, resin ribbon, inkjet cartridges, etc. Just this morning there was the sound of cardboard cores bouncing on the cement floor. There is always the hum of printers and the rhythmic pounding of the presses. Oh, and two different streaming internet stations competing with each other. One is typically set on iHeart (gag) Z-100 and the other is MOR deep cuts that range from Gary Puckett and the Union Gap to Eagles and such.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Krys O.:

Let the children boogie, Rev.

Useless ball bearings fact: in many of these, the "balls" are not balls but truncated cones. These might be even more hazardous to blenders
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

I love listening to blurpy sounds like this while I gaze across the street to see the tractor attached to the farm cart which is offering coolers full of shelling and sugar snap peas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm David (in London):

The Truncated Cones just never got the same level of attention as the Ball Bearings. By then the music biz had changed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Truncated Coneheads might have been a fun SNL idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm TheRealMattClarke:

Would the "cones" be shorter, or would they end the skits early?
Avatar 1:44pm winston legthigh:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Krys O.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm I k e:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm 1ke:

@fred, in fact, on a recent jaunt up north, I did see many, many, many “help wanted” signs at restaurants, and had the same reaction as you. In Burlington VT, some restaurants now close at 8:00, which I don’t recall being the case before — I wonder if it’s due to labor shortages. (OTOH my memory is absolute garbage, so who knows.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@ike: They've been talking about that here all summer. Many blame it on the extended unemployment benefits. But there's another factor: this year the state got 25,000 less seasonal workers. Dunno, it's complicated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm fred:

If only closing restaurants early could lead the patrons to demand $15
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Michael 98145:

what fred said
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm sphere:

I believe that restaurant workers are following one of my dad's sayings: "if it hurts when you do that, don't DO that!"
Avatar 2:16pm winston legthigh:

is that a cat with his head in a flip flop? hilarious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm sphere:

yeah, Ike's graphic is awesome. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Carmichael:

I worked in plenty of shitty kitchens at "upscale" restaurants to fund my schooling. That's why I love the book Kitchen Confidential, as it pretty much describes my work life then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Yeah, and what with the rise in food costs, restaurants are in a bind. I've got a friend who's a restaurant manager and she's said that her food costs have blown up because of distribution issues, so even if she could off a ton more money to workers, she'd have to figure how how much of all of it to pass on to the patrons.

Glad that's not my job.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Michael 98145:

First of all, i'm glad i never had to work in a restaurant (wouldn't have the patience) and second of all it REALLY pisses me off to learn a restaurant has been stealing the workers' tips.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Handy Haversack:

We both worked in restaurants for years. My dad was a waiter his whole life. We are pretty much dream customers now. K8 and I met in grad school, but it's almost more accurate to say we met because we worked at the same restaurant in grad school.
  2:25pm Brendan:

@ Carmichael, Lots of tidbits in that one. I remember the part in the book about avoiding brunch. Leftovers served at three times mark up by beginners on the worst shift.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm fred:

@WoodsOfNH: I'm not saying restaurant owners are generally evil, though some may be. As you pointed out, they're not the ones making the most money, not are the small farmers. Evil and money tend to pool in the same places. Distribution seems a deep one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Handy Haversack:

fred, there's something peculiarly depressing about seeing the massive Sysco truck pull up to a little restaurant in rural U.S. areas and begin to disgorge bland, monoculture produce -- when the restaurant is surrounded by farms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm I k e:

@winston, I’ve tried to track down the origins of this mysterious classic GIF, but no dice yet.
@woodsofNH, ah, I’d noticed the menu prices had all jumped quite a bit. I’d hoped that was all going to the employees, sigh.
Avatar 2:32pm winston legthigh:

must be catnip in there somewhere.
  2:35pm jameson57:

If you think these sounds are great does that make you crazy? Or something
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Michael 98145:

@HH, similar situation in Hawai'i ... where local farms are struggling to compete.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Michael 98145:

(p.s. hope you are both getting better )
  2:36pm nick:

The only successful restaurant modal was the 20th century diner. Eggs toast and coffee cost my dad less than a dime, sold it for 75 cents, customer would just a leave a dollar as a tip which went right back in the till cause the waitress was my 14 year old sister, and the cash literal 1000 percent profit proceeds would go undeclared in a paper bad bag back to Greece to build a villa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm chresti:

I worked for about 3 days as a waitress at a Ho Jos, when I was about 16.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm fred:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Handy Haversack:

It's a good question in any context, winston. What IS Lake George?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm chresti:

I remember getting really upset when a guy at the counter kept screaming about ketchup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm fred:

@chresti: did it count as a cocktail bar back then? (www.youtube.com...)
Avatar 2:40pm winston legthigh:

that was you? sorry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Handy Haversack:

She was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar? A cocktail bar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Lake George is where my mom used to raise hell when she was young.
  2:41pm Brendan:

@Handy, it sad that the distribution chain has a giant middleman like Sysco delivering produce. I guess small farms can’t afford to deliver to restaurants or set up shop in a farmers market, and busy chefs can’t spend too much of their morning hours shopping for produce.Sadly I’ve come to accept that. I guess where I draw the line is restaurants serving ready-made meals from Sysco or other suppliers. Frozen soup. Pasta in a sealed bag that they throw in a pot of boiling water. No restaurant diner should be paying for that. When they could do that at home.
Avatar 2:41pm winston legthigh:

that much is true.
  2:43pm jameson57:

If you answered Lake George, Robin Roberts would have said "Sorry wrong"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm chresti:

There was a bar, my dad, who got me the job, went there often. The bar was adjacent to the coffee shop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@fred Oh, I didn't think you were implying that. It sure is a complicated situation. We had our restaurant mgr friend over for dinner last Sunday and she messaged us saying she would be late because they were short staffed and she had two help with the after close cleanup. Several hours worth.
Avatar 2:44pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Krys O.:

That's right, Brendan. I used to watch a lot of Jacques Pepin on TV with my mom. He would bring up HoJos. He also said his mother in France used ketchup in some of her recipes.

@chresti: Same here with diners, old fashioned ice cream shoppes, etc.
  2:52pm jameson57:

Ha! Once worked the overnight shift at a 24 hour diner. Friended the cops and the midnight crawlers It got really crazy at 2 AM when the bars closed on the weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Speaking of Howard Johnsons and Jacques Pepin, there's a terrific book out there called 10 Restaurants That Changed America. There's a chapter on HoJos. The whole thing is a great read.
