A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Rich iw - I don't know how Molly Ringwald or Frankly look like dancing, so I can't Invision how you would look. So you don't have to be embarrassed by this listener.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Pauly from Clifton:

Franco, that flier is the shit! Holly and the Italians, so great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Rich in Washington:

Oh, it would be embarrassing, Kpx! Trust me.
  8:35pm Kpx:

See what I did there, ringwald or 'frankly'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Rich in Washington:

argh. fixed it. Loose connector.
  8:36pm davefromtoronto:

shit i missed the bukowski - where'd you find that one?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Rich in Washington:

@ironybread @8:29: And now I see that cover model/singer doing things like building gingerbread houses with his wife on Facebook live. Ah, time, the great mellower outer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Rich in Washington:

i found it cratedigging, davefromtoronto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm ultradamno:

I'm still haunted by The Links. Particularly that 'ugly' song...I've heard a few songs with the ugly girl hook before, but that was harsh.
  8:39pm davefromtoronto:

dumb question sorry - i found a vinyl version in a record store in michigan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Rich in Washington:

So deeply unpleasant but you can't not listen. I know what you mean, ultradamno. It leaves a stain on your soul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Rich in Washington:

That's awesome DFT! I just have the CD reissue but I'll bet that record's rarer than hen's teeth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Scott67:

I only listened to Links with one ear, so the other stayed clean for the Crate.
πŸ‘‚πŸ’©πŸ˜ŽπŸ€™
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Rich in Washington:

Smart idea, Scott67!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Franco Twinkie:

We snuck a tape recorder into The Golden Bear, a club in Huntington Beach in 1977 and recorded Bukowski doing his shtick. He had a refrigerator full of beer on the stage as his companion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Rich in Washington:

Is that the one that was filmed? Not the infamous Redondo Beach reading, but I think I've seen it. At least I've seen one where he had a fridge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Franco Twinkie:

Was the Redondo Beach show at The Fleetwood?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Rich in Washington:

the entire one which was turned into the album Hostage was filmed and you can watch it online but honestly, whoever edited the audio for the album did a masterful job of making a really entertaining album. The whole film drags by comparison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Rich in Washington:

It was recorded at The Sweetwater in '80.
  8:48pm davefromtoronto:

i think the whole reading is fantastic! the best part is his shit talking with the audience. it's on youtube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Rich in Washington:

totally, davefromtoronto! Love that album.
  8:50pm davefromtoronto:

you're a big bukowski fan i assume?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Franco Twinkie:

That's what I remember best about the show I saw, some galoot going toe to toe with him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Rich in Washington:

I think I am. Love his stuff. Some of his recorded output is touch and go, though
  8:51pm davefromtoronto:

you really were at a reading FT?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Rich in Washington:

My top three 'instant party' records: Bukowski's Hostage; Tom Waits Nighthawks At The Diner; and Hound Dog Taylor's Beware The Dog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Richy4619:

what's good, Rich! I'm always reminded of the Shoelace poem. it's the little things!! truth be spoken
  8:52pm davefromtoronto:

were you ever on the bukowski.net website and forum?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Richy4619! Hearing The Shoelace on late night radio kinda did it for me. I was a fan ever since.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Rich in Washington:

@dft: I am sure I have been.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Rich in Washington:

I got to meet Buk's friend and biographer Neeli Cherkovski a couple of years ago and he's a lovely man. And a fantastic poet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Franco Twinkie:

I have 90 Minutes In Hell, a double album on Earth Records. It has a short story about a tailor that has a dead person in his bath tub.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Rich in Washington:

I am pretty sure I have that one. I should listen to it again.
  8:56pm davefromtoronto:

yea that story with the lobster? i love that one.
  8:56pm davefromtoronto:

i have a recording i got from that website of a reading at a place called baudelaires - have you heard it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Rich in Washington:

No. doesn't ring a bell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Franco Twinkie:

Yup, the lobster, and the bit about sour cream.
  8:57pm davefromtoronto:

yeah that's a really spacey story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Franco Twinkie:

Weirdly, It always makes me hungry.
  8:59pm davefromtoronto:

oh man you guys got me going on bukowski now. one of my favourite artists. and i'm drinking red wine too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Rich in Washington:

I wish he had read his novels in the manner of audio books. I love them, especially Ham on Rye and Factotum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Rich in Washington:

maybe I'll play a bunch of Bukowski after my show. Like an aftershow.
  9:00pm davefromtoronto:

yes that would have been fantastic. no one reads his stuff like him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Franco Twinkie:

Factotum is my favorite. That use to come out as installment in a newspaper called Open City.
  9:01pm Kpx:

Rich iw - holy crap! Your the only other person I've ever heard or in this case typed the term, "rarer than hen's teeth" be sides my older brother way back in the 70ty's. I always assumed he invented it since I've never heard it again. That is until now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Rich in Washington:

Oh right. Open Pussy as he called it in his writing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Rich in Washington:

maybe we come from the same planet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm chresti:

What's the manner of audiobooks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm ultradamno:

Bent Hamer's film of that is pretty good, as I recall.
Avatar 9:02pm ironybread:

Franco - do you still have any hard copies of Open City?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Rich in Washington:

I'm mostly made of water and antiquated sayings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Franco Twinkie:

NO! But I think Bruce Litz use to work there. He has all sorts of funny stories about L.A. in the mid-sixties.
Avatar 9:05pm ironybread:

Ooh, gotta ask Bruce if he's got some specific issues of Open City with Firesign Theatre junk in 'em!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm WR:

I've been listening but can't recall anything I've heard so far. Can you start over?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm ultradamno:

They say the secret to longevity is eating a cup of beans a day
  9:09pm Kpx:

I think he said bean church.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Rich in Washington:

That sounds like something Don Van Vliet would say.
Avatar 9:10pm ironybread:

WR - just watch the original "Dangermouse" series from the 1980s and you should be all caught up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm ultradamno:

Here you go "If you're eating about a cup of beans a day, it's probably worth an extra four years of life expectancy." www.wellandgood.com...
  9:14pm Kpx:

I remember danger mouse, he had a sidekick called penfold. i forgot what kind of animal he was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Rich in Washington:

can I still eat like a huge 1" ribeye steak with potatoes every day if I eat the cup of beans and still live four more years?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm chresti:

I had a bean burrito yesterday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm chresti:

Beans are good for the bowels and diabetes, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Rich in Washington:

I'm not doing this looping if anyone's wondering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Rich in Washington:

I like beans.
Avatar 9:18pm ironybread:

I ate a burrito con carne today. Oh god, I heard myself yell, people really are animals. Then I voted for a potato for president, shouting "Four more years".
  9:19pm davefromtoronto:

this sounds like a bukowski poem...
  9:20pm davefromtoronto:

hey rich do you really find this stuff randomly cratedigging?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm WR:

I have Bukowski's The captain is out to lunch and the sailors have taken over the ship next to the toilet and read from it nearly every day.
  9:22pm davefromtoronto:

i was gonna say that captain book is one of my faves too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Rich in Washington:

A lot of it but I also listen to an absurd amount of radio and online radio. And read old fanzines. And frontal lobe epileptic hallucinations where a baboon named Jeremy tells me what to listen to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Aitch:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Rich in Washington:

When I first read abut trepanation I was actually thinking it made sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm ultradamno:

Is there a Biz Markie memorial set planned?
  9:26pm davefromtoronto:

i read an article on a woman who had it done on LSD and then went to a party the same night...can't deny it's tempting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Rich in Washington:

I think it was the first rabbit hole I ever went down where there was this (w)hole community that held deeply odd 'alternative' medical beliefs. And now we have flat earthers and vax deniers and wifi conspiracy people on every block.
  9:27pm davefromtoronto:

biz markie died? i used to watch him with my son on yo gabba gabba.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Rich in Washington:

Did Biz Markie pass away? I know there was a false alarm a couple of weeks ago but he was also in hospice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm ultradamno:

Yep. www.nytimes.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Rich in Washington:

Aw dang.
  9:30pm Kpx:

Well yeah people are animals. were definitely not vegetable or mineral.
  9:30pm davefromtoronto:

some are vegetables...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm ultradamno:

I really liked Donna Kossy's Kooks zine, but that wasn't these banal vax conspiracies, it was always intensely personal obsessives with complicated graphs and stuff.
  9:34pm Kpx:

daveft - Right you are.
  9:41pm davefromtoronto:

rich i'm blown away you know about trepanning - what was it "brain blood volume?" - intriguing concept but kind of terrifying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Rich in Washington:

I just loved the proposition that our infant fontanelles should never have closed up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Rich in Washington:

I should look for songs about trepanning or holes in heads.
Avatar 9:44pm ironybread:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm ultradamno:

Right Side Of My Mind is the closest I think of, one of the reapers on Dead Like Me died in a trepanning mishap.
  9:45pm davefromtoronto:

the first i heard/saw of it was a video of a member of an african tribe having it done to her by who i'm assuming was the tribe doctor - while she was sitting awake! seared in my mind ever since.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Rich in Washington:

Trepanning Mishap would make a great band name.

that's from a movie called PI?
  9:59pm davefromtoronto:

event horizon was a great movie! wow this show is just how i needed to end my week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Rich in Washington:

Glad you're digging it, DFT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Rich in Washington:

yeah, PI, but Darren Aronovsky(sp?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Rich in Washington:

Aronofsky.
  10:02pm davefromtoronto:

is it good? is that clip a spoiler?
Avatar 10:02pm ironybread:

a) It's good
b) It's a movie you can't really spoil, to be honest
Avatar 10:03pm ironybread:

c) Darren Aronofsky is...problematic
Avatar 10:06pm ironybread:

d) Adorable doggies are not problematic, which is why that Nurse With Wound cover is awesome. #WiddleDoggies
Avatar 10:08pm ironybread:

Omigod Rich, how does that Bingo record work? Does it have multiple grooves?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Rich in Washington:

yeah, it's got three grooves, apparently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm ultradamno:

So it's the Methodists who have the correct idea of god, good to know.
Avatar 10:15pm ironybread:

Yes, but they didn't include the answer key with the record. That way they get to keep the exclusive rights to the God franchise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm ultradamno:

That's how they get you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Otis:

Heyyyy Rich, still here hanging out, that's a good 10-4.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm Rich in Washington:

  10:29pm davefromtoronto:

"butthole surfers" might be the best band name ever...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Rich in Washington:

I like to think so, dft!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Scott67:

I love the Buttholes!!πŸ’©πŸŒŠ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Rich in Washington:

The bass player on this played for the Buttholes briefly. Mark Kramer, aka Kramer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Rich in Washington:

He wrote about touring with them recently and it's a great read. Funny. Harrowing even
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm ultradamno:

Eugene Chadbourne told Bill Zink of Belgian Waffles they were like Butthole Surfers without the sex and violence and Bill said "I'm sorry"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Franco Twinkie:

I've never heard this version of Signed D.C. It does justice to the original.

Avatar 10:42pm ironybread:

Rich, do you mean an interview with Mark only answered three questions, but he answered them in so much detail it turned into a virtual biography of the group? I read that but I'm damned if I can Google it now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Scott67:

Love this!!πŸ‘πŸ’€
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Otis:

Have a great night Rich and all, signing off to slumberland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Rich in Washington:

Nighty night, O-Man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Franco Twinkie:

Remember to drink one cup of tepid hot dog water to insure wicked dreams Otis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm WR:

ok, beans are simmering, time to catch up on what I've been hearing and y'all been talking about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm WR:

I've seen Mdou Moctar getting attention, is this track typical or are you multi mixing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Scott67:

G'night Otis.βœŒπŸ˜ŽπŸ‘πŸπŸ‘πŸ‘

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Rich in Washington:

I'm not sure, ironybread but I am due to go visit them any day now. I've got a big crate of records to throw in their free bin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Scott67:

Thanks Rich, shit hot show mate! πŸ‘πŸ˜ŽπŸ’©πŸ”₯
Avatar 11:02pm ironybread:

Thank you for yet another brilliant show dear sir
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm Scott67:

Do it!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm WR:

Gary Sullivan went to Mississippi Records a couple of weeks ago.

Thank you Rich. And extra thanks for extra Bukowski.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm chresti:

Thanks Rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm Rich in Washington:

Thank you everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm Rich in Washington:

I'll leave the playlist open for a spell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Rich in Washington:

You can also find this album on Ubuweb and it's got the bits all separated out into individual cuts. I think it might in fact be the version I cut up and put online many, many years ago but I am not sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm Rich in Washington:

I'm gonna go eat some food and listen with y'all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm Scott67:

I just burped in synchronization with him. For I also have a fridge full of beer, but no stage.
πŸΊπŸ‘πŸ˜Ž
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Franco Twinkie:

This is good. I love the picture - Bukowski drinking in White Fence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm WR:

I got my beans in the bowl. Fuk Yes Buk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm ultradamno:

Some Donna Kossy art from False Positive twitter.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Rich in Washington:

I've got this ridiculously potent IPA in the fridge and I'm gonna try it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Scott67:

Fart!! Fuck yeah!πŸ‘πŸ˜Ž
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Rich in Washington:

I adore Donna's collage work. I used to buy her calendar every year up until she quit putting them out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Scott67:

Cheers Rich! With my ridiculously cheap Vietnamese Lager.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Scott67:

So what's it like Rich 🍺?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Richy4619:

Cheers y'all. Cheers to Hank.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Rich in Washington:

It's strong and really bitter. It's 10%.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Scott67:

Bitter in a good way?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm Rich in Washington:

yeah, I dig the IPAs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm Scott67:

Nice!πŸΊπŸ˜ŽπŸ€™
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm Franco Twinkie:

When Chresti worked at Hollywood Park, Bukowski would come to her window.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm WR:

did he flirt?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm Franco Twinkie:

She went out side. I'll ask her when she comes back in the house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm Rich in Washington:

What did Chresti do at Hollywood Park? Is that a horse track?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm WR:

oh, I've been mispronouncing Fante all these years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes. She was a pari mutual teller. She worked there and Santa Anita.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm WR:

My brother called Joyce Fante once in the late 70s or early 80s, I don't remember for sure. He said she was happy to talk to a random fan for a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Franco Twinkie:

WR, she said he didn't flirt, that he was pretty self absorbed, like most people placing bets. She said good luck once and he flinched. Sometimes he was in a good mood, other times no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm ultradamno:

Not my lobe nodules!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm WR:

Interesting, that fits what he wrote, he wrote that he didn't want to talk with the tellers, just place the bet with minimum interaction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Rich in Washington:

I would imagine habitual horse race betters had all kinds of superstitions and rituals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm Rich in Washington:

This is the film of the performance which this album was derived from. It's titled The Last Reading, which it apparently is. www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm Rich in Washington:

This is going to end in about 10 minutes and then I'll stop and go to the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm Franco Twinkie:

I had a neighbor who's boyfriend would see him at Santa Anita. He was a heavy better who didn't care about anything but horses, we use to ask him all kinds of questions just because he was such a jerk. One time he took his girlfriends roommates vacuum outside and lit it on fire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm WR:

Thank you for letting it all play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm Rich in Washington:

my pleasure, WR! I hope everyone's having a great evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm Franco Twinkie:

I saw Patti Smith read in Redondo Beach. It was good, but nothing like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am Rich in Washington:

That would be something, Franco. I adore Patti Smith.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am Scott67:

Happy you shared your IPA & Bukowski with us Rich!
Thanks mate. πŸΊπŸ˜ŽπŸ€™
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am Franco Twinkie:

Rich, it was just her and Lenny Kaye. It was amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02am Rich in Washington:

check out Neeli Cherkovski's poetry if you like Bukowski. They were close friends who bonded on poetry and I daresay Neeli's poetry is even better than Buk's in a lot of ways (although I love Bukowski's prose and novel work).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03am Rich in Washington:

Patti Smith's a national treasure. I think she deserves credit for making Punk happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05am Rich in Washington:

Thanks for hanging and listening, everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05am Franco Twinkie:

I agree Rich. When people talk about punk, they often dismiss Patti. But when I saw first saw her in 1976, she flattened me. No ifs ands or buts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06am Scott67:

πŸ‘πŸ˜ŽπŸΊ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07am ultradamno:

Her SNL appearance is possibly the best musical performance ever on the show, except maybe Fear...I think it's on Vimeo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08am Franco Twinkie:

She blew my head off when I first saw her. Thanks so much Rich.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08am Rich in Washington:
