@Kpx: it seems the official names are "Pink Martian" and "Blue Martian", but that's clearly not in their own language.

  9:14am earthwalker:

Joe. Thanks again for the Swags !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Webhamster Henry:

@Kpx - further scrolling has Guy Smiley introducing them, but I consider Guy an unreliable narrator.

The Martians (addressed as Stevie and Jonathan Martian) are the contestants on one of Guy Smiley's game shows.

I'm trying to remember whose WFMU program uses another version of "Flying" as an interval signal.

Avatar 9:35am Joe McG:

@Oscar: Hard to tell how to approach today. Is it sunny? Is it rainy? Is it cloudy? Hard to make a music match, so I went for relaxed "could be stay in, could be take a stroll" music.

I have grown out my hair for the first time in 25 years. And my beard. And I have realized that I have no exit strategy. I have cut my own hair that whole time and really know nothing other than "let it grow" and "take it all off"!

It's like watching a slow-motion car wreck, but I'm also the car!

And hi to Joe and all the great folks here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Handy Haversack:

Oh, Yes, so very, very sorry to hear that. Exactly as Joe said: your love will make the transition one of peace.

Bagpipe and I are going send love while we hug (and at least one of us cries a little). Sympathy and solidarity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Yes: Very sorry to hear that. We had to do that (for the very same reason) a few years ago. Somebody told me that when you get a puppy you're signing up for one very sad day. True. But giving a dog the best life has all of those other rewards. Take care.
  10:09am earthwalker:

When I was a kid, my dog had epilepsy and I'll never forget sitting out in the rain with him in the yard making sure he didn't hurt himself during a sudden seizure. We had to put him to sleep because of the severity of the disease.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@Handy: During the pandemic the wife started cutting my hair. I happened to have a set of pro grade trimmers for my beard so once a month she gives me the #3 on the top, #2 on the sides.

@Woods: One of the many benefits of being married, I guess! I'm half-blind and the lighting in my bathroom is terrible, so I think this might be my final effort.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Ken From Hyde Park:

Maybe that can be a draw for the monthly Saturday Sidewalk Sale events. "Come watch Matt give Joe a haircut at 1PM!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Handy Haversack:

We know it wouldn't be happening in a bathroom!
  10:22am headcleaner:

You need to learn to do it by -touch-, Joe, (and your own mental map of what's going on the other side of your head), not by looking at the mirror (which screws with everything, by flipping the coordinates). That's the magic key to cutting one's own hair
Avatar 10:22am Joe McG:

@Ken: No way, he uses a Flowbee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am The Oscar:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Handy Haversack:

Our cats are 15, 15, and 18 now, and the dog is 9 and just now starting to slow down just a touch but noticeable for the first time. Intimations of mortality are never far away. But lots of joy, too.
Avatar 10:33am Joe McG:

@monica: Wow, really?!
  10:33am davefromtoronto:

this is also like "life is a rock" or whatever that tune was called.
  10:35am listener monica:

I was a born again teenager. The album was called "Only Visiting This Planet." I really dug him then and still do.
  10:36am davefromtoronto:

the guy who wrote this amazing song took his own life. life imitating art and vice versa

I'm starting to slow down myself a bit, Handy. But I don't call it that. Rather I call it "becoming one with time"
Avatar 10:36am Joe McG:

F*ckin' 'igsons!
Avatar 10:49am Joe McG:

@Terr: Wow, I wouldn't want to have that conversation with George Jones. He'd blow your brains out! And Tammy would cry.

Charlie Higson has achieved national treasure status over here :)

Need to check the drainage in the lower field ;)
Avatar 10:52am Joe McG:

@Mungo: I haven't followed his career. What's he up to these days?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Krys O.:

Yes, Charlie Higson has had a few careers after music. I love the Fast Show. @Mungo: The spinoff of that sketch is so sweet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Mungo Perkins:

The Gospel According to Joe Tex !
I found this HLG single a couple yrs ago in Rochester after wantlisting it forever. Worth the wait!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am pgalub:

@Joe is Bill Berry singing? (Or Peter Buck?)
  11:00am Brendan:

It would be interesting to hear how Joe Tex, Percy Sledge, James Brown, etc. would accommodate non-binary people in their lyrics.
Avatar 11:02am Joe McG:

@pg: I always wondereed! If you can find out, let me know.

Bryan Cook. Peter’s got a low, non-melodic voice; Bill did the high harmonies on a lot of R.E.M. records

We have fake pines in the northeast. They look really silly.
  11:13am Brendan:

Yeah they have these fake eucalyptus trees in California that are really cell phone towers.
Avatar 11:14am sophie:

This is good !!
  11:17am Brendan:

Sometimes the local laws cannot prevent cell towers from being built but they can require them to be concealed. I don’t know if I like that idea.Better the devil known, it comes to electromagnetic fields. Typical California though. Gotta pretty it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am steveo:

Good morning Joe & everyone
Avatar 11:18am Joe McG:

@sophie: I agree! Very nice stuff.

There's a great one in LA that's a huge pine tree. Pine trees don't grow in LA

Hadn't heard of Marc Ribot. Really nice Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am zivilars:

very calming song, love it
Avatar 11:21am Joe McG:

@Kevin: Check him out, he's had a long, varied career playing all kinds of interesting music. I have a soft spot for his Cuban period.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Ken From Hyde Park:

When the military perfects cloaking technology, that can render the cell phone towers invisible. But then birds, drones and jetpack people will start colliding with them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Krys O.:

Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog is worth checking out too.
  11:28am Mike W.:

Joe what’s that band of Ribot’s called, Ceramic Dog? Can’t remember if they were an outlet for his Cuban explorations. Of course, no one of a certain age can forget Ribot chaining himself to the stage at Tonic in 2006 as the marshals came to shut it down and arrest whomever they could...
Avatar 11:29am Joe McG:

@Mike: They were the Cubanos Postizos. He also much earlier in his career did some solo acoustic stuff that was Cuban, or maybe Brazilian, I now forget.
Avatar 11:30am sophie:

Wow :O
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am tim from washington:

@Mike W -What's the story behind the Tonic show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Krys O.:

@Tim: Tonic was being forced out by their landlord, I recall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Krys O.:

@Tim: Here's some info: en.wikipedia.org...

I loved seeing bands at Tonic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

My favorite Ribot album is Rootless Cosmopolitans. There's a song called "The Cocktail Party" which is a sort of sideways, busted funk instrumental. That record also has a totally crazy cover of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am tim from washington:

Thanks, Krys.
  11:37am Brendan:

Got a devil’s haircut in my mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Krys O.:

I saw Ribot play with other former Tom Waits musicians at Ralph Carney's memorial that was organized by Hal Wilner.

@Krys O: Jealous!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am steveo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Son Of Pantz:

Swag For Life Member 11:44am 12539:

Joe, the acoustic Ribot you're thinking of may be these recordings of the works of Casseus, who was Haitian and Ribot's teacher.
  11:44am Brendan:

It’s mange (the reason for the itch)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Brian in UK:

Joe, hearing Richard Youngs made me wonder do you still have the Lowery organ on site?
Avatar 11:48am Joe McG:

@12539: Hm, I swear I have something else, but you may be right. @Brian: We sure do, but no bands here to play it!
