Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Here you are! Right before my very ears.
Avatar 7:13pm Listener Gregory:

Here we are again with hits and flops. I'll play the flop; you play the hit, BB. I'm pretty sure I can manage that part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Bronwyn and Theatre Fans!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm doctorjazz:

Quick hi, catch the show in the archives. Going to the movies, in a real, live movie theater, in a mall (Menlo Park). Feel like I've done this before...(Summer of Soul).
Great weekend all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Webhamster Henry:

Did I ever send you a picture of the little stickers you could optionally put on the piano roll of A Chorus Line's Dance 10 Looks 3? The Piano roll equivalent of a bleep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Webhamster Henry:

Here it is: www.dropbox.com...
Avatar 7:23pm Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, hope you survived your oral surgery this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi Gregory and Henry (and have fun doctorjazz!!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: that is so cute...and of course the reason it's called Dance 10 Looks 3 instead of the more logical Tits & Ass is because they weren't allowed to call it that lol
Avatar 7:26pm Listener Gregory:

Everyone's enjoying 1600 PA Avenue! You can hear the audience. So it must be a hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Webhamster Henry:

"Rated X" hahaha. I haven't seen any piano rolls from "Oh, Calcutta!" or "Let My People Com" , popular as the were.
Avatar 7:29pm Listener Gregory:

Hear those cheers? Hit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Webhamster Henry:

Lotta words in that First Lady tune.
Avatar 7:32pm Listener Gregory:

The cast learned them so we don't have to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Webhamster Henry:

There's nothing floppy about Slim& Slam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm doctorjazz:

LG, my dentist sent me to the oral surgery, told me I needed a bone graft in order to get an implant. The oral surgeon said, Na, plenty of bone, no need. I think that was the outcome I prefer (not sure...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Bronwyn Bishop:

but there WAS something floppy about jerry lewis's 1976 revival of hellzapoppin!
Avatar 7:36pm Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, good news! Don't question it too carefully.
Avatar 7:37pm Listener Gregory:

BTW, Bronwyn, your voice levels are awfully high. But your pronunciation of Gaillard matches what I've always heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Webhamster Henry:

You can always check pronunciation with The Old Codger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Webhamster Henry:

Annie was another feather in Goodspeed Opera House' hat.
Avatar 7:46pm Listener Gregory:

I have a definite memory of having seen Ain't Misbehavin', but I can't tell if it's real or maybe a PBS broadcast (?) or just playing the cast album over and over. But in my memory it was truly great.
Avatar 7:48pm TonyR:

Okay, now this week Brownwyn is blowing out my speakers when she speaks because I have to blast these to hear any of the music . :(

Robert Preston @7:48?
Avatar 7:49pm TonyR:

Called it!
Avatar 7:52pm TonyR:

Even Dolly makes mistakes. Let it inspire you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Today in great ideas: name your Broadway musical A Broadway Musical!
Avatar 8:00pm TonyR:

But then what do you call the inevitable movie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Webhamster Henry:

For those of you reading along, it's page 136 in Not Since Carrie.
Avatar 8:06pm TonyR:

You won't be prepared when they make a musical of "Cannonball Run". You'll just lose the plot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Webhamster Henry:

See Boogie Nights for Burt and great ensemble work. I don't know why my mind is in the gutter tonight. A tasteful gutter, maybe, but nonetheless a gutter.
Avatar 8:07pm TonyR:

Burt plays well with others.
Avatar 8:08pm Listener Gregory:

I think Burt was popular from Smokey & The Bandit and other car-related films. But a very good movie from the 70s or 80s was Deliverance.
Avatar 8:21pm TonyR:

"We're singing again! We're dancing again!"
Avatar 8:22pm TonyR:

You know!! The FLOP!
Avatar 8:34pm Listener Gregory:

I have just had the worst flop in the history of cuisine for home-made pizzas. I literally could not get it into the oven. And now I have no dinner!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Webhamster Henry:

"singin' dancin' kitty cats"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Wish I could find the pic of me dressed as Grizabella watching the video of this show in our living room circa 99, as I did every single day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I was 37 at the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Bronwyn Bishop:

i kid
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Webhamster Henry:

Merrily gets revived every once in a while with script changes and a sensible cast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Webhamster Henry:

But the original Kaufmann & Hart play is actually pretty good!
Avatar 8:49pm Listener Gregory:

Wait, what video of Cats did you watch in 1999?
Avatar 8:50pm Listener Gregory:

Speaking of flops, I have to leave early to get dinner to replace my disaster. Thanks, BB, and good-night everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Bronwyn Bishop:

it was the 1998 video recording of the show
Avatar 8:52pm TonyR:

Little did you know that one day you would be on the other side of the pledge-beg.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Webhamster Henry:

Big River was ANOTHER feather in Goodspeed Opera House's cap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Webhamster Henry:

Oop sorry - it was a American Rep in Cambridge MA..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Webhamster Henry:

More hits 'n' flops next week? (the 80s were particularly dreary)
