ahbez quote from WP: "I look crazy but I'm not. And the funny thing is that other people don't look crazy but they are."
  8:10pm phat in Lincoln:

Oh wait! He wrote Nature Boy. I had no idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Gaylord Fields:

Hello, sugarwolf! Happy 4th patrick321, good evening, DjLorraine!
Avatar 8:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sometimes think Ahbez makes an interesting compare / contrast to Moondog. Except - Ahbez actually *was* a kind of Proto-Hippe on the West Coast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Franco Twinkie:

Gaylord, this is great!
Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Bruce S.:

Wow Sam cooke was amazeing, the many voices he had
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Franco Twinkie:

@Franco Twinkie: Yes, with Domenic Priore.

Hello, Gaylord & Brian. Happy 245th, USA!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Franco Twinkie:

Yup, I went to one of their readings.
Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Bruce S.:

Well hell. He's my new favorite weirdo artist.
Avatar 8:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...there were people just before the Hippies who identified as 'Freaks' - like some of the folk that Zappa associated with. A bit more individualistic than the stereotypical Hippies...
  8:16pm Carmichael:

Heya Gaylord and residents of free America.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm listener 126464:

Great stories and songs, thanks Gaylord.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Franco Twinkie:

RR, The thing about L.A. then and now, is you could/can be your own kind of nut, more or less without getting too bugged. And yes, there is fruit just hanging off trees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Daisy Lacy:

hi Gaylord!
  8:20pm phat in Lincoln:

@Franco Twinkie James Ellroy wrote a lot about that.
Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Bruce S.:

I'm not really familiar, did he write this set? it's beautiful, thanks Gaylord
Avatar 8:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Franco - I was homeless in Santa Barbara a short while - in the mid-late 1980s. It was an ordeal - but in my early 20s, not impossible...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Gaylord Fields:

Hi, Daisy! Welcome to paradise!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Franco Twinkie:

Phat ,and James Ellroy is nothing if not a nut!
  8:22pm phat in Lincoln:

And by weirdo, Iran that in only the most respectful and appreciative manner. I have only respecy for legit weirdos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Gaylord Fields:

@Bruce S. All the songs in this set are written by Eden Ahbez.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Julie P.:

Love the Wondermints! Hello all and Happy Fourth!
Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Bruce S.:

California also has a very strong and very crazy right wing as well, I think it was always there
  8:23pm The Butterman:

Franco! Loved your orange juice video. I really appreciated Jerry’s “Clementine” as your soundtrack and who I assume was your lovely mother holding up Aoaxomoxoa!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Gaylord Fields:

Jooools!!! Welcome! And they certainly are a group worthy of their name.
  8:24pm Carmichael:

Orange County & San Diego, Bruce.
  8:25pm phat in Lincoln:

@Franco Twinkie you're telling me. I didn't know him well, but there was a big sort of thing for him on hipsters in the 90s, when I was in my 20s. The funny thing was, I had asked my mom, who loved biographies, what her favorite biographies was and she had said, My Dark Places. I regret never asking her what she enjoyed about it after I read it. My mom was not known for her fascination with that kind of strangeness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Franco Twinkie:

Thanks Butterman! I have a house in a neighborhood full of fruit trees. And I, for the grace of god and supportive loving parents didn't wind up in the street.
Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Bruce S.:

I always wanted to visit San Diego
  8:26pm headcleaner:

exotica svenska
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Julie P.:

Gaylord - saw them when they played with Brian Wilson and a 12-piece orchestra on the first Pet Sounds Live tour. It was a memorable night.
  8:26pm phat in Lincoln:

Iran = I mean. That's an odd autocorrect.
  8:27pm Joe R.:

great show! if I knew the focus earlier (my bad) I would have saved my Planter’s Punch for now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Gaylord Fields:

Jools, Darian of the Wondermints is a friend and an expert musician and arranger and student of all things concerning good pop music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Gaylord Fields:

@Joe R.: Why, make another one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Julie P.:

Gaylord - I'm so jelly! They are very talented!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Franco Twinkie:

The exotica thing has always been part of the L.A. landscape. The music scene here in the 80's-90's really ran with the ball.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Julie P.:

I LOVE exotica! Such a wonderful groove.
Avatar 8:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh - okay ...so - Ahbez was a major progenitor of Exotica ? ?
& - he & Brian Wilson were familiar...
What are the timelines...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Gaylord Fields:

Jools, it's a huge love of mine, and I hope to get to do more DJing in that style now that those opportunities are coming back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Gaylord Fields:

RevRab: Ahbez started in the 1940s but was writing songs into the 1970s. His Eden's Island LP came out in 1960, and BW was definitely familiar with it.
Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Bruce S.:

Sounds very exciting Gaylord
  8:37pm phat in Lincoln:

Luckily this is going to be archived, since he's doing 4th stuff right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Gaylord Fields:

@Bruce: Thanks! I'm excited.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I feel like I've stumbled into an obscure corner of a music museum. Learning about things I never know existed. Rummy's "unknown unknowns"?
Avatar 8:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Explorer's Room program here on the Drummer Stream helped me to connect the dots between Exotica & Psychedelia...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Gaylord Fields:

I know my way around exotica pretty decently, yet I learn so much from Explorers Room every time I listen.
Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Bruce S.:

You have expanded mymusical conciosness again Galord, I feel like I know much more now then I did before
Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Bruce S.:

I think of Exotica as a very expansive musical style that can incorporate a very wide range of music under it's banner
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Gaylord Fields:

Definitely!
Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Bruce S.:

I think 70s dance music is somehow connected to Exotica
  8:52pm phat in Lincoln:

Oh! My buddy is listening now. I had recommended your show, @Gaylord Fields already as a good source for exotica. He's enjoying the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Gaylord Fields:

  8:57pm Free Will-E:

This is amazing. The last one was not the Doors?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Gaylord Fields:

@Free Will-E: Well, not at first. :)

  9:16pm ri:

great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm patrick321:

From my perch on the high end of Monty Street I can see fireworks from Coney Island to the Outerbridge and it looks like every corner of Jersey City has its own local Grucci. Despite all the pop pop pop I'm digging your soundtrack Gaylord.
  9:17pm davefromtoronto:

great show gaylord - you're outstanding in your field(s)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Gaylord Fields:

Thanks, ri! Very cool, patrick321! Aw, I appreciate it, davefromtoronto!

Best wishes, Jeff & Vicky! You're both the aces in the deck!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm ultradamno:

One relatively modern act with pretty deep exotica influences I've been deep diving into this past pandemic year, thanks to Bandcamp availability is (the pre-Messer Chups act) Messer Für Frau Müller, endlessly delightful stuff. messerfurfraumuller.bandcamp.com
  9:24pm Andres:

Hello! Is there a term for this ghostly vocalizing?
Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Bruce S.:

  9:25pm slugluv1313:

good evening, Gaylord! Fields Enthusiasts!

not signed in yet -- but LOVING what you are playing -- especially that "Fire of the Soul" -- WOW!!!

got home a little while ago, such a lovely contrast to all the noise outside (NYC, Jersey City, Hoboken too! 😵🙃😩)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Tommy in Neversink:

I'm in to this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Gaylord Fields:

@Andres: No specific term that I know of; it's generally just called wordless vocals.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Franco Twinkie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm chresti:

Lovely show Gaylord, thank you!
I'm taking it with me to the shower.
  9:32pm Andres:

Franco, a fave video of this last year was an aerial shot of LA last July 4th. It was an endless sea of fireworks. Spectacular!
  9:35pm phat in Lincoln:

Lincoln will be blanketed in smoke like a thick fog, in a couple hours. It's usually pretty crazy here, but this year is way, way beyond the usual already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Gaylord Fields:

Franco: Enjoy your watermelon accompaniment! chresti: Enjoy your water accompaniment!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Franco Twinkie:

Andres oh yeah, last year it was beyond berserk. My sister just called. She's at our mom's house and is totally freaked.

Though I’m in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, the fireworks most clearly visible to me from my fire escape are the Jersey City ones, because those dips in Manhattan are doing theirs way uptown again. What a bunch of wieners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Gaylord Fields:
