I now think The Onion is a reliable news source ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm ChukAmok:

The Onion is the only news source I trust anymore. They just get it so right every time. For instance: I had forgotten that DeBlasio ran in the presidential primaries while he was still sucking shit as mayor.. Where did he get off?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm ChukAmok:

Is this the first ranked choice mayoral election for NYC?
Avatar 12:12pm Hubig Pie:

Cheers, Handy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Handy Haversack:

Yup, ChukAmok, first one. City Council, too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm ChukAmok:

Speaking of NYC mayoral races, and since Handy Haversack is also here: Over the weekend I watched Richard Pryor's classic "Brewster's Millions" in part of which he pitches for the minor league Hackensack Bulls...I honestly had a hard time with separating Hacken/Haver.
Avatar 12:27pm Mary Wing:

Oh, this wasn't the first time ranking was used in voting? Didn't expect that.
Avatar 12:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...in my goofier setting...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Ike:

@Mary, first time for ranked-choice voting in NYC, but they already had it a few other cities and in Maine. Now we need it statewide, e.g. DA is technically a state position why Manhattanites couldn’t use it for DA yesterday and sensible voters only just barely seem to have consolidated around one candidate at the last min. to stop Evil Rich Wall St. lady from winning. With RCV it prob. wouldn’t be such a squeaker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Ike:

*which is why
Avatar 12:45pm Sem:

Guy w/ a topiary practise, βrian. Get trimmed, limbed, & cut back every 2 weeks.
Avatar 12:45pm Sem:

Yo ho, Handy, Phillippe there in alt-Annapolis.
Avatar 12:48pm Sem:

RevRab, I have a feeling you need to meet Nick the Bard.
I had the pleasure last year; my fez spun in delight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Handy Haversack:

I think I went four deep in my City Council rankings but only two deep on mayor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Michael 98145:

well, this has certainly been a winning set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Ike:

@spod@12:18, without RCV, crook Eric Adams would already be declared winner with a simple plurality of 32% which would be total BS. He may still win but we’ll see!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm ChukAmok:

I thought I lived in NYC under two terrible mayors (Ghouliani, Bloomy), but if Sliwa wins in the general then hooollleeee sheeeeiiiiitttt..
Avatar 12:51pm Mary Wing:

I think the white speakers make it look more like 2001 A Space Odyssey, frankly, which is never a bad thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Nice, chresti. How long since you last met in person?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Phillippe:

Hey Handy, Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Phillippe:

Oooh, new Japanese Breakfast! I love her/them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Handy Haversack:

I guess the rationale is that you can vote your conscience AND vote strategically since it's pretty much impossible that any candidate who could get the conscience vote could ever be elected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm ChukAmok:

Hey Phillippe! How goes it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Ike:

@Chuk, no chance of that, we’ve changed a lot since Mayor Melting 9/11 Opportunist. Official NYC Repubs like Sliwa are a total and complete joke. All wily conservatives register and run as Dems. Eric Adams basically *is* the Republican candidate. He was even endorsed by the NY Post!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm ParUbi:

Hey everyone. . . Loved this first hour!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm ChukAmok:

That is a good way of looking at it Handy. Being an outsider now it's a bit tough to wrap my head around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Mary and 100%ers! This set has been SOOO LUSSH!
Avatar 12:56pm Mary Wing:

Hiya Henry! Are you day-drinking, then? :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm ChukAmok:

@Ike true, but Bloomy was REP before changing to Independent, and this time Adams was REP before changing parties. Even Lhota left the GOP after the '13 election. Hungry for power y any means necessary, the whole lot of 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Phillippe:

Hey ChukAmok! As good as it's gonna get, I guess. About to head out to the docs to see if I have any broken ribs, so there's that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm spodiodi:

what did you do to your ribs, Phillipe!? and aloha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm spodiodi:

and aloha, Stanley
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Michael 98145:

be careful out there, friends
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm spodiodi:

Phillippe*

chresti, cool! hope it's a nice visit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm spodiodi:

hey ParUbi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Phillippe:

Hey spodi! I fell a grand total of about three inches last week and still managed to do some serious damage. I was leaning over a padded seat headrest to test voltage on a battery behind the seat and slid off the headrest onto the top of the seat that wasn't nearly as padded. Still can't sleep on that side, hurts when I cough, hurts when I sneeze, would probably hurt when I laugh if I would ever laugh...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm spodiodi:

hello, Webhamster Henry
Avatar 1:05pm Mary Wing:

Hey there ParUbi! Glad you liked it, got more in store for you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm ChukAmok:

Oh no! Hope it's alright. I'll toast to getting older at the appointed hour. Right there with ya.
Avatar 1:09pm Mary Wing:

Oy, Phillippe, that sounds lousy! Sending healing vibes through the Wing Bling, if you're wearing it today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm spodiodi:

ah crappy, Phillippe. hope you mend soon and without the diseasecare industry's involvement. i know how sucky cracked/bruised/? ribs can be :-B who needs to breathe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm spodiodi:

laughing, coughing, breathing, sneezing, sleeping, moving... all can suck hard with rib trauma
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Phillippe:

Thanks guys! Heading out but listening in the car via bluetooth, so don't say anything bad about me on the air, Mary, cuz I'll find out!
Avatar 1:11pm Hubig Pie:

How do you mend a broken rib?
Avatar 1:12pm Sem:

Looking forward to getting the Wing Bling in the mail, Mary, along w/ all the other swag from the marathon. Concerned about wrist size, tho.
Avatar 1:12pm βrian:

I just grated off a bit of my finger tip. A minor injury, suffered in service of a fine salmon salad. However, my mouse no longer detects my bandaged finger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm spodiodi:

take 'er easy, Phillippe

Hubig: time. and pain. much like a broken toe in that regard (i guess)
Avatar 1:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Reminds me of Street Hassle yerknow...
But it doesn't have to. Lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

yes, the word "lovely" came to me, too. enjoying this track, Mary, hi! Hey there, folx!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm spodiodi:

βrian, did the salad have some extra zing? i wore the fingerprints from my fingers a couple of times during the horrortimesofhandwashing to the point where they would no longer open finger-id enabled devices (like my phone)
Avatar 1:15pm Mary Wing:

Good morning, Baba Bee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Handy Haversack:

Oof, Phillippe, that sucks. And blows!

Yeah, spodi, you have to tape it to the next ribs.

My depressing injury of the week is a miserable case of poison ivy that I got not from any actual adventure but because Kate and band did a photo shoot for their upcoming EP, and she must have got some oils on her clothes. She never felt it at all. But I'm so allergic that half my skin has erupted. All without leaving the apartment. What. A. World.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm spodiodi:

hey, Baba Bee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, Mx. Baba Bee!
Avatar 1:16pm Mary Wing:

I can send a larger bracelet to you, Sem, if the one you get is too small. When I ordered a second batch, they are the same length overall but bent in a wider arc for some reason.
Avatar 1:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Geez we need to do Protection Rituals...
Avatar 1:17pm Hubig Pie:

So the doctor visit will strictly be for confirmation. Yep, it's broken, have a nice day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

hey spodiodiodio! Hey, Handy, that sounds awful, I am very sensitive to such, as well.
Phillipe: I'd say something funny but I don't want to make you laugh.
Avatar 1:18pm TDK60:

Hi Mary.
Avatar 1:19pm Mary Wing:

Hi TDK60! I trust you are injury-free today? Except for the usual slings and arrows of daily life, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm spodiodi:

lo siento, Handy... hate the stuff... will never forget the case of sumac i once had that was... horrible... and attending the funeral of my friend's father, in a suit, during a very hot summer day (in a church without air conditioning), and feeling it just weep and ooze down the underside of my arm... thorugh the toilet paper bandage i'd wrapped it up with to catch the ooze. curse you poison *****. curse you.... my mother would get it so bad she'd have to wear mittens to bed
Avatar 1:20pm Hubig Pie:

The cello. The most soothing of all the instruments
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm spodiodi:

anyway, hope it starts going away soon, Handy. my sympathy to you and K8
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

I'm so grateful that I'm living in a plce with no sumac, poison ivy, poison oak or anything like that. The worst we got is nettles, and I love them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Stanley:

Baba Bee. Long time no see. You doing alright?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

Hi, Stanley! Yeah, I've been in a remote place with a spotty internet connection and not on the chat boards so much lately. My owwies are all on the inside, but I'm alright, thanks. Hope you're well!
Avatar 1:24pm TDK60:

Mary, no injury, but went to a clinic for possible hernia or prostate problem. Not sure yet; scan upcoming.

I'm back from my remote place and facing the world again.
Mixed results but on the whole okay.

this Allah-Las has something special
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Stanley:

Love Blancmange
Avatar 1:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Great tune !
...Like to Gittarband it up... 3OAK ?? :p
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm spodiodi:

playlist is missing the last couple of tunes, eh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Handy Haversack:

Blancmange is one of the nicknames of our all-white, extremely soft, totally dominant cat. She's never read Gravity's Rainbow.
Avatar 1:58pm TDK60:

Don't know Lambchop but that so-called autotune makes me less curious, for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Stanley:

spodi - phew' I thought my internet was playing up. It has been all day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Michael 98145:

ah, there.
Avatar 1:58pm Mary Wing:

Sorry, had to deal with work stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm spodiodi:

there we go (thanks, Mary!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm spodiodi:

(i'll stop refreshing, etc. now :) )
Avatar 1:59pm βrian:

Had to look up 'blancmange.' Sounds like a bad skin condition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm spodiodi:

haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Handy Haversack:

YES, Tears for Fears!
Avatar 2:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Introduced to the word by MontyPython - as per my character profile...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Stanley:

βrian - it was what we got for pudding at school dinners.
Handy I imagine it's available as an audiobook, if she's interested in that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Handy Haversack:

I don't know, Stanley. She's pretty disdainful!
Avatar 2:03pm Mary Wing:

I only knew the word blancmange from Monty Python too, heh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Yvang:

There might be even more covers of Mad World?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Stanley:

Well, stuff her.
Avatar 2:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the blahh-manjjz was the protagonist of the Python episode dedicated entirely to their SciFi B-Movie parody - an exception to their usual freak cut & segue mastery...
Avatar 2:04pm Mary Wing:

Hiya Yvang! Probably, but I wanted to hear this one, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Yvang:

I love it too!
Avatar 2:09pm Sylvia:

I like your choice for this week's 3OAK, Mary
Avatar 2:10pm Mary Wing:

Thanks Sylvia! I found a *lot* that sounded like the original, so it was great to find many that were different.
Avatar 2:13pm Sylvia:

I think Tears For Fears don't get the recognition they deserve, they wrote good songs! I really like Mother's Talk, too
Avatar 2:15pm Mary Wing:

Poll time: for those folks who are following the GTDR instragram page, would you like a teaser for the 3oak song once in a while? We're trying to drum up interest in the account, so I want to do my part but I am not into that whole social-media thing, heh.
Avatar 2:17pm Mary Wing:

For example, I would have used a tiny cropped picture from the Pale Shelter video for today's song.
Avatar 2:17pm Sylvia:

why not, Mary, could be a little fun in the dull world of Instagram
Avatar 2:17pm TDK60:

What's Instagram?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Working and lurking, Mary, but listening and enjoying your show from the very start, as ever!
Avatar 2:18pm Sylvia:

you should have got an account automatically with your vaccine, TDK60
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Handy Haversack:

Sylvia, they could really sing, too! What voices.
Avatar 2:19pm Mary Wing:

Hiya S&M&S! I saw that clickystar earlier, yep!
Avatar 2:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah if Tears were Gittars they'd likely be PowerPop heroes...
Avatar 2:21pm Sylvia:

true, Handy, a very interesting sound all over. I listened to The Seeds of Love (the album) so much when it came out
Avatar 2:21pm TDK60:

I've heard of it, Sylvia. I'm not on "social media." Email and the WFMU comments board is it.
Avatar 2:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Tears sort of were Gittars I guess...
  2:22pm P-90:

Truly inspired choice for a 3oaK! *ding*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Kevin / Ringwood / UK:

Like this instrumental version Mary. Clicky starred.
Avatar 2:23pm Mary Wing:

Hey there, P-90 and Kevin in UK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm spodiodi:

Robertinho De Paula for president
Avatar 2:24pm Mary Wing:

Normally I like to alternate male and female vocals, so when I don't have a balance of voices, I will toss in an instrumental, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm ChukAmok:

@Mary as a reluctant but still somewhat active IG user, and follower of the GTDR page I think that the occasional teaser could be fun, but no spoilers! Could be more effective during marathon times as well.
Avatar 2:25pm Sylvia:

you're not missing much, TDK60, I have big mixed feelings about Instagram. It's meant to display pictures, but the site crops them automatically, it makes no sense. And there's a lot of pretending and shallowness (more than on Twitter, that I use a lot, for instance)

I use Instagram mainly for Tremosphere, and to look at cake and make up videos!
Avatar 2:25pm Mary Wing:

Yes, Chuk, this is prepping the IG page for future marathon mania, indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Kevin / Ringwood / UK:

Hi Mary! A Nouvelle Vague version would be interesting, but I don't think they covered it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Stanley:

They've all been good covers so far. A sign of a strong song.
Avatar 2:26pm Sylvia:

I'm with Stanley
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Handy Haversack:

Mark Hurst will happily link (and has done so!) to an article about how much better it is for arts nonprofits to get off social media entirely rather than devoting so many person-hours to increasing traffic thereon. I bring this up at work all the time to the sound of absolutely no response.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Stanley:

I'm with Handy on this. Surely, there's an alternative platform that could be used.
Avatar 2:29pm Mary Wing:

I love Nouvelle Vague's cover, Kevin, yep, but they didn't cover this as far as I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Handy Haversack:

Techtonic link: news.artnet.com...
Avatar 2:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Digression : ...a DJ opened with a long George Michael track other day - & I didn't know who it was yet ...thinking - this is very JohnLennon, who is it ?? Listen without prejudice as they say...
Avatar 2:30pm TDK60:

Join me in the Hall of Techno-Laggards, Handy. We'll listen to cassettes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Handy Haversack:

I'm in, TDK60!
Avatar 2:32pm Mary Wing:

It's right next to Luddites-R-Us, right?
Avatar 2:36pm TDK60:

Hee Mary. I do hang in a different chill room from the 8-track folks though. Can't stand 8-tracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm spodiodi:

i want a Secret Admirer tee shirt
Avatar 2:37pm Mary Wing:

It's a fine line between Secret Admirer and Creepy Stalker, though, spodiodi, heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm spodiodi:

i was *this* close to asking if 8-tracks were cool, TDK60\\//
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm spodiodi:

i'm hoping the tee shirt will help me avoid being percieved as the former, Mary (at least less frequently)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm spodiodi:

latter* sorry
Avatar 2:39pm Mary Wing:

Um, you mean the latter, surely?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm spodiodi:

order. order order. everything and order
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Handy Haversack:

A T-shirt that says Creepy Stalker ... maybe a 7SD premium for next year?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm spodiodi:

comes with chance to win 1 fuzzy glove
Avatar 2:46pm Sylvia:

I like this house/pop/whatever version of the song
Avatar 2:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My naiveté : My but a lot of people cover a lot of songs...
Avatar 2:49pm Sylvia:

it's fun to do covers
Avatar 2:49pm Mary Wing:

I always say that when I'm looking for songs, RevRab, heh, especially when it's an obscure song.
Avatar 2:49pm TDK60:

Thanks Mary, gotta split! See you Sylvia, Spodi, Rev, HH, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm spodiodi:

until next time, TDK60\\//
Avatar 2:50pm Sylvia:

there's gonna be an album of Metallica covers (for charity), and Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan is doing Nothing Else Matters, that should be good
Avatar 2:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's fun to not do covers
.../ it's fun to do covers...
Avatar 2:50pm Mary Wing:

Cheers TDK60
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Michael 98145:

Thanks again, Mary
Avatar 2:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...which I suppose are after all the only two options...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm spodiodi:

Mary, it's been nice to see the dags back in your av (not that the drum wasn't cute too )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Handy Haversack:

Later on, TDK60!

I was filling the bird feeders.

Oh, and look where all this Pale Shelter has brung us! Thanks, Mary! Another Wingdinger! Glad to have been here.

Draw on, O Wing'd Chariots all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm spodiodi:

hope the poison lets up, Handy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Handy Haversack:

And here's Our Blancmange, out on the back stoop with us plebeians.

Thanks, spodi.
Avatar 2:56pm Sylvia:

thanks, Mary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm spodiodi:

thank, Mary! 100% +++
take care everyone
Avatar 2:59pm Mary Wing:

Thanks for listening today!!
Avatar 2:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

TY !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Stanley:

Great stuff Mary. Much enjoyed.
Later everyone.
