"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Ken From Hyde Park:

I make believe Don is the star of one of those 70s crime-solving TV detective shows. He's onto all the dirt. His catchphrase is "Don't forget to do the laundry!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am karlward:

I thought his catchphrase was "you'll never get THAT stain out!" (laugh track here)

I have a pond paddler too w spray skirt .The Prime Hook Refuge is a great paddle. Launch from the trailer park next to the liquor store at Waple Mills Pond, paddle 7 miles to dock then return. From the Refuge its 5 miles of boring mud flats instead of beautiful forest

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Passaic River Blues:

Speaking of dreamlife, I adore Crown Heights Affair. Great set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Passaic River Blues:

Yes! This is the only song I requested be played by the DJ at my wedding reception.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Passaic River Blues:

Like, just this song over and over for two hours. He didn't go for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Ken From Hyde Park:

I think "Studio 54" would be nice closing credits for Don's cop show.

"20th century music" is good , if its good. Lots is boring intellectualism at its worse. Like any music, it needs interesting turns and passion. I like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Ken From Hyde Park:

Love back to you, Heidee! 💕
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Passaic River Blues:

Loved the cut featuring Abdul Wadud from last week. Sent me on my way to Wadud's solo record "By Myself"--great stuff.
  10:36am TerrDE:

J A, i save tunes to Watch Later on YouTube. is the Gary Bartz, I've Known Rivers the same tune ? it came up first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am YETI BOB:

Hey all you JAzz lovers - I'm late to the party today but it sounds great. I'm so happy that juneteenth is a federal holiday now, that's some good news.
  10:37am theolsonspins:

the drum sound on these old recordings. it's amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Handy Haversack:

I even have the day off, YB! Going to hit the river later on.

Right now, the dog and I need to get heart worm pills and some books, though. Thanks for the show, JA!
  10:40am TerrDE:

Best recordings were live room w 1 mike. Engineers now use gear to justify having it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Ken From Hyde Park:

RIP Herb Tarlek, WKRP ad salesman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am YETI BOB:

HH: I guess I have the day off too, that explains why none of my colleagues are online. Maybe I'll try to put my boat in the water today too!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am YETI BOB:

JA: I haven't heard of Yvette Jackson, I guess she was not one of the Jackson 5 .... seriously though, this is just fantastic
  10:42am Glistener MW:

I can’t repent; I haven’t pented at all yet.
Avatar 10:43am Heidee:

@Ken @10:32, thank you hun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am YETI BOB:

TerrDE: Rudy Van Gelder (who made some of my favorite jazz recordings) was known for using multiple mikes and placing them in unconventional ways. Of course you have to have a good room too, which he did.
  10:51am TerrDE:

Yeti, yeah more mikes is fine, I m just against adding reverb just because the engineer has one. the one mike applies to 50s Country thst I used to listen to on NPR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Krys O.:

Chugging along at work on a bizzy Friday and loving the JAZZZZZZZ!
Avatar 10:54am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Perhaps? Recording is like Cooking.
The most important things are knowing what tastes good - & actually watching it to make sure it's coming out right. The rest is Technical - which is essential - but won't make it good on its own... & otherwise anything goes. But Simpler might have a better chance of being Good?
Avatar 10:55am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Also - I know nothing about Recording or Cooking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am PaulRobeson1920:

91.1fm Sounding good on E Houston St.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am terminalhipness:

@rev - If you haven't, you might check out the CIMP label. Everything is live to two tracks, no compression, etc. Plus they recorded some fantastic players. Sadly, I think they may now be defunct..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Phillippe:

good morning! No government clients to meet with today! I can finally get real work done and listen
  11:07am Morgan from Philly:

oh no
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am terminalhipness:

Whoah! JA "origin story"!
  11:15am theolsonspins:

@terminal -- I'll check out that CIMP label stuff. simplicity is on the far side of complexity, as they say

@Hubig - It does at first for sure but then it makes sense once you connect the dots of who Chilton has worked with. Particularly Tav Falco, Cramps and Gories.
