Avatar 🚂 12:41pm Hubig Pie:

Your cryptic clue has me thinking of a country with a recent name change, like Zaire to Democratic Peoples Republic of Congo or whatever it is now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm David Dichelle:

Having a bit of late coffee over here, myself, Chris. Cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Got nothing but gunpowder green tea ...which is wonderful & goes a long way ...& probly better for me than the mgs. of caffeine I would really like. But - I'll have some more...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm David Dichelle:

I may do some more hinting in a minute or two...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Carmichael:

OK, out and listening. And I'm sticking with Senegal.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm chresti:

Oh, there's a Mr. Roud, here I thought roud was the song style.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:47pm chresti:

Yerba mate packs a good caffeine punch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm David Dichelle:

Yes, Steve Roud is the man behind the index.

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Yvang:

Armenia? (has a beautiful writing)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Brian in UK:

Hello David. The road goes on forever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm David Dichelle:

Liechtenstein sounds like fun - but could be a challenge, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm David Dichelle:

Good (early) evening, Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm David Dichelle:

There is in fact a town called Lichtenstein not far from here. Unsuspecting tourists wind up there all the time looking for the principality.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Yvang:

Digging Obojeni Program !
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Brian in UK:

Unsuspecting Tourists. Was that someones band!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Yvang:

Or Clueless tourists?
Avatar 🚂 1:00pm Hubig Pie:

Based on your not so helpful clues, I'm going Saudi Arabia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm coelacanth∅:

they never suspected how clueless they were
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm David Dichelle:

Well there is a castle in Lichtenstein, Saxony, so the truly clueless may never even realize what happened.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Yvang:

At Antarctica you might have to play field recordings of Icebergs...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Stanley:

Ali Bon Tempi? Very good.
Hey David and everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm David Dichelle:

Ciao, Stanley!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Handy Haversack:

Greetings, David and Voyageurs! I have been listening the whole time but stuck in the car. Are we meeting for drinks at the Blind Beggar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm David Dichelle:

Yvang, Penguin Operas are legendary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm David Dichelle:

Handy, one day!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Yvang:

Looking forward!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Stanley:

Rats, I missed the Roud.
Did anyone make the comment about the pub in Bethnal Green Road named the Blind Beggar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm coelacanth∅:

icebergs, harp seals and haarp weapons
  1:05pm headcleaner:

has a beat & I think I can dance to it
Avatar 🚂 1:05pm Hubig Pie:

Lichtenstein does a heavy traffic in passport stamping
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm David Dichelle:

That is the pub in question, Stanley. And apparently our meet-up destination sometime in the mythical? future.
Avatar 🚂 1:05pm Will in Norman:

ooh psychedelic flamenco?! this is lovely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm David Dichelle:

Hey there Will!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm coelacanth∅:

i missed the first clue, but based on the more recent clue i change my guess to
...pakistan?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm fred:

@Yvang: When I first saw Armenian, it reminded me of Amharic. An Armenian coworker told me it was a touchy subject. Some believe the designer of the alphabet took inspiration from an earlier version of Amharic to get legacy legitimacy, others say that's BS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm coelacanth∅:

(though it seems unlikely no one's ever guessed pakistan before)
Avatar 🚂 1:08pm Will in Norman:

i like the idea of a continental subway pub meetup. someday when international travel is a safe idea again....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm David Dichelle:

Yes, it is a tough one to guess today, hence all my atypical hinting.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Stanley:

David - The Blind Beggar famed less for the historical character than for where Ronnie Kray gunned down George Cornel of the Richardsons Gang. Now probably a gastro-pub serving craft beer but........
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Handy Haversack:

Well, my Random Road random generator gave me Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Which I don't think anyone has guessed, at least. But I'm not sure whether it qualifies as needing an extra column! Or whether it's big enough to qualify at all?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm David Dichelle:

Will, that would be wonderful - hope it can happen sometime - whether in Jersey City, Leipzig, or indeed the East End of London.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Stanley:

David - you go in first.
Avatar 🚂 1:11pm Will in Norman:

ah yeah the rise of gastropubs was 1 thing i really lamented about my last visit to london. I wasn't old enough to drink when london pubs were still as they used to be
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Michael 98145:

- i who have nothing - 🎵
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Yvang:

@Fred: My knowlege of this writing is limited to the fascinating and beautiful endcredits of armenian movies I saw years ago. I am very fond of Sergueï Paradjanov's movies.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Carmichael:

@Stanley, are you talking about the Piranha Brothers, Douglas and Dinsdale?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm David Dichelle:

Handy: I'm pretty sure those won't make the cut for an hour of music. Probably not even a track to be had from those particular rocks.
  1:13pm ?:

Hey, really digging the show. I can't talk much, just wanted to say that. Hi David, hi everybody. I'm guessing Guam....
Avatar 🚂 1:13pm Will in Norman:

if i can drink craft beer at some fancy-ass hipster bar in america, what's the point of doing the same thing in london?
  1:13pm headcleaner:

@Will - that's what's weird about England - somehow we *want* it to have bad food (except for the migrant imports of course)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm David Dichelle:

?: Thanks, glad you're enjoying it!
Avatar 🚂 1:14pm Will in Norman:

i actually kinda like english meatpies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm David Dichelle:

I enjoy a traditional-ish English pub and a pint of proper regional bitter.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Handy Haversack:

Ha, good to know, David!

OK. Well, it then gave me Belgium, which does NOT seem like it fits your criteria ... so one last try: Angola! I don't remember anyone guessing Angola, so I'll stick with it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm David Dichelle:

If they still exist of course.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Handy Haversack:

OK, we are going to have to stop all this pub talk unless someone can get me a pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord right away!
Avatar 🚂 1:16pm βrian:

Do gastropubs serve gastropods? As a menu item, I mean.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Michael 98145:

hell, i'd be happy to be able to just hang out in any bar again
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Carmichael:

Ultimately, they all serve gastroenteritis.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:17pm fred:

@βrian: Maybe they do in France
  1:17pm headcleaner:

So has India been done? I'm hoping the extra column will be used for language grouping
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm coelacanth∅:

i think angola's been guessed before Handy (maybe by me?)
but you probably shouldn't take my word on it
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Carmichael:

There's a task, coel: Download all of Continental Subway's comments, convert to plain text and scan for country names.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm David Dichelle:

I don't think anyone is going to guess it, to be honest. Anyhow, I'll be revealing it soon enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm David Dichelle:

Well, one of you is very close, actually.
Avatar 🚂 1:20pm βrian:

i definitely retract my updated guess of pakistan, but i'm not sure where to go...
svalbard?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Chresti! I realize it will increasingly difficult to remember which ones have already been done. The guessing is just for fun of course, anyhow.
  1:23pm Kpx:

Hi people, never heard of Yerba mate b4 until yesterday and just moments ago. is that some kind of Coffee brand, or something else?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:24pm WR:

Vatican?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:24pm dutchtheo:

؟ ٱلْيَمَنِيَّةُ (Yemen‎)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm David Dichelle:

Hello Kpx and WR! Mate is a kind of tea from South America and the main component in a lot of trendy soft drinks around here (Germany at least).
Avatar 🚂 1:25pm βrian:

Now I can't find my bombilla.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm coelacanth∅:

-i considered yemen. good guess theo, but i guess i'll stick with svalbard
...i think!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Little Danny:

Hi David, hi y'all.
Avatar 🚂 1:26pm TDK60:

I've been drinkin' yerba mate for a while. Makes me less jittery than the coffee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Danny!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi, David! Hey, Subwaytarians!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm coelacanth∅:

hey Danny hey Doug!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Brian in UK:

Stanley, have you got your birthday suit ready?
  1:32pm Kpx:

Thanks DD, @TDK60-it sounds really interesting, I like to try to find some to see what it's like. Can it be found in your regular everyday supermarket.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Give the Drummer Radio is a "clothes-optional" stream.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm chresti:

I like yerba mate. Guayusa too.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Brian in UK:

Just received a copy of Rizan Said's King Of Keyboard. He gives Omar Souleyman his base. So it is north east Syria.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Brian in UK:

David, I know, so glad that Doug does not have a web cam like Uncle's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm David Dichelle:

Greetings unto thee, Doug!
Avatar 🚂 1:36pm TDK60:

Kpx: usually no, only some Latinx grocers or natural food shops.
  1:36pm Kpx:

Hi Chresti, not in the tennis booth today.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Brian in UK:

Doug, did not read who commented, trying to cook and type.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm David Dichelle:

It's strangely difficult to get Mate here on its own, while it is practically everywhere in all those sugary drinks. Fun fact: Club Mate, the main one here, was available in an upscale food store in Jersey City at around 10x the price, when I was there a few years ago.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:38pm chresti:

Hi Kpx, not today. Yeah TDK60, health food markets. I like the "green" yerba mate.
  1:39pm headcleaner:

If it's not too declassée to make another guess I would go with the Republic of South Africa - again hoping the extra column is used for the sake of its appreciable language diversity
Avatar 🚂 1:40pm TDK60:

What's guayasa, chresti?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Handy Haversack:

Well, my emergency back-up guess is Timor-Leste. And let it go at that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm David Dichelle:

Headcleaner: There are no guessing rules or requirements - all just for the fun of it. In fact, I don't even remember how all the guessing started in the first place.
Avatar 🚂 1:44pm Will in Norman:

Wow, nice, Will.

Thanks chresti. Another holly tree caffeine. Kpx, there are mailorder places for mate. The teaspot.com is one.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:49pm chresti:

I bet Handy started the guessing, I guess?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm David Dichelle:

Yes, well caught, Will - as spoken and sung in Peru.
Avatar 🚂 1:50pm TDK60:

I used to keep track of guesses. But I got lazy. Guess I need coffee.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:51pm chresti:

I think I read somewhere that guayusa can make your dreams look blue.

Back from the daily potato.
Responding to the talk about *bad* English food, you're more likely to get good food nowadays. And good beer. It's hard for pubs to survive just selling drinks and crisps, nowadays, hence upping their game on the food to compete with restaurants. Roast Sunday lunches are the business, though, especially in London. Perfect for a meet up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm David Dichelle:

Will: That sounds like fascinating work. I'd love to hear more about it.

Chresti - Blue huh, that sounds like something I could use, because I generally dream in brown and like a dirty white colors, once in a great while I will get some kind of washed out multi colors dreaming going, but not too often. I would ask people if they dream in vivid color, and they would say yes. So I don't know what's wrong with my brain that I can't.

Yeah, I figured an Arabic speaking country; there are many.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm David Dichelle:

I hope all the transliterations are more or less correct. If anyone speaks Arabic, I'd be happy to hear your feedback!

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:15pm chris in the redwoods:

have always loved the sound of Arabic, but haven't learned much of the language... yet... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm David Dichelle:

Hey there Bas - it's never too late to guess in honor of previous weeks!
Avatar 🚂 2:20pm Hubig Pie:

Shookran Stanley. I loves some meze from Al-Shirq Al-Awsat. David, I took a course in Arabic-Egyptian at the DLI back in '79. So if any of the songs are about tanks or helicopters, I can help you with that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm David Dichelle:

Well, I don't think or necessarily hope so, Hubig, but t(h)anks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm David Dichelle:

One of the challenges of learning Arabic is the wide range of dialects, which are often in fact more like regional sub-languages.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Stanley:

Hubig - I learnt my Arabic from six months in Egypt and Sudan. Lived in Cairo for a while and it remains one of the best time of my life. Loved the food, culture and the people. Erhumdillilah.
Avatar 🚂 2:26pm Hubig Pie:

Ja, David. The course was a full year of Modern Standard Arabic, then 6 weeks of Egyptian dialect which basically threw the previous 12 months under the bus
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Michael 98145:

Ah, food. NOW we're talkin

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm David Dichelle:

Yes, big thanks to Kenzo for maintaining this great system!
Avatar 🚂 2:30pm Bas NL:

These songs all sound very lyrical and melodic. Great picks David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Bas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Kenzo = ThuhWhiz. Though you need plain English alphanumerics in the Song column to clickystar...
Avatar 🚂 2:31pm Will in Norman:

@hubig
ah interesting. that russian teacher later worked with russians in former yugoslavia in the 90s & he's spent a lot of time backpacking throughout the former soviet union. he had a lot of great stories.
Avatar 🚂 2:31pm Hubig Pie:

Our listening post scooped Gaddafi's invasion of Chad
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Handy Haversack:

I think it works to encase the song titles in parens in the Song column and paste the other script in. Just that last character needs the right encoding to get the star there.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Michael 98145:

Where else could we be listening to a program broadcasting from Saxony, playing music from Qatar ?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm David Dichelle:

Rev Rabbit: I think that may have been fixed at least in some cases. I do like to have the transliteration there anyway so that everyone gets an idea of what it is on their various apps and displays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Handy / DD Thx for precision...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm David Dichelle:

Hubig: That must have been fascinating!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:35pm Carmichael:

judging by that sweet electric organ that just started this track is probably a bit older than the others we've had so far
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm David Dichelle:

Yes, I don't have a year on this one but it does have that vintage sounds, and love that organ!
Avatar 🚂 2:44pm Bas NL:
