With this playing, I feel it appropriate to warn everyone that there is a new DAONA single in the pipeline, and on it I play the trumpet a little. Like Miles Davis. He played trumpet. The difference is that he played it really well, and I don't. I actually left town and did it in the country where I could be isolated and my poor neighbours wouldn't have to suffer. Don't say I didn't warn you...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Phillippe:

@David the closest I will get to playing the trumpet is to play a record where someone is playing trumpet.
Avatar 12:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Complete Silent Way Sessions woke me to the fact that BitchesBrew was not such a sudden rupture into Electricity... Arguably, it was keyboardist Joe Zawinul here who invented Ambient not Eno... Kind of a logical extension of Miles 'inventing' CoolJazz - certainly epitomizing many aspects of it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm David (in London):

Spod, Coela, Rev D Rabbit.

Rev - And Teo Macero badly needs his due, too.
Avatar 12:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Took sax lessons sometime deep into the previous century - would love to have a trumpet to fool around with. Being the instrument of heralding kings - subtly very much the Art there...
Nod to Teo yes. Who @ least was able to live his life in an era before autoincorrect would perpetually fight him to spell his name 'Two'...

I played not well trumpet in highschool band. I was chair 11 of 12. Yo, Spodio

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm coelacanth∅:

i lured a squeak out of a cornet a few times when i was little.
and some squawks out of a saxophone.
that's about it.

howdy Handy!
Swag For Life Member 12:24pm spodiodi:

i played sax before deciding i'd rather play clarinet (poorly)... i was excited when my little brother took up trumpet (i had plans to have him lead the horn section in my tribute(-ish/inspired) band that never happened

wb, Sweaty Haversack!
Avatar 12:25pm Sylvia:

haha David, trumpet, noted
Avatar 12:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well Voces8 is a bit of Gorgeous.
Clarinet is 'squeakier' than Sax - a relatively simple instrument to learn the fundaments of (like Gittar)... I have a little Alto now - would like to try a Tenor sometime...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm David (in London):

In the sauna, Handy?
Avatar 12:27pm Sylvia:

if you listen carefully, I played a bit of triangle on a track on Deux Anges 😁
Avatar 12:28pm Mary Wing:

Howdy spodiodi, coelacanth, RevRab, and Handy! I had to go get an office opened, and watched as the security guard tried EVERY key on the keyring and couldn't open the damn door. I asked for the keyring and opened it with the first key, sheesh.
Avatar 12:28pm Hubig Pie:

I told the bandleader I wanted to play flute. He sent a letter home that said I had an aptitude for the flute. My father sent a letter back that said we have a trumpet in the house, he has an aptitude for trumpet
Avatar 12:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Got a flute too. If you learn one woodwind - the fingerings are related! Flute requires blowing just the right way across that hole ...trumpet is all modifications of a raspberry duckcall... They all require Lungs, is the thing.
Swag For Life Member 12:32pm spodiodi:

i wish you had a "ding" sound that followed you around that was executed at KEY times like wehn you opened that door, Mary :) 🛎️

i confess i did not like the non-reed horns in general until well into adulthood. i think it was those terrible beatles (George Martin) arrangements that did that ...and chicago.

even when i got into Curtis and Sly and Clarence (etc) in my early 20s i avoided the songs with horns for years.

Hullo Sem ! spodi ! Everybodies.
coela - it's interesting to love Jazz - & encounter those who just can't stand 'those horns' :O ...
It was Sax got wild in RawkaRolla & antecedents before the Elektric Gittar...

Avatar 12:40pm Hubig Pie:

C-lo, no. I'm sure I would have mastered playing it not very well. I did play the Highland pipes for several years, so that was my woodwind experience
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm coelacanth∅:

RR i didn't like Miles for years, even though i loved Thelonious and Roland Kirk, etc.
it was actually Jon Hassell's collaboration with Eno, with the heavy effects that opened me up first. then bitches brew.

Hello the Mascara Carmichael, you are fast and bulbous as always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm coelacanth∅:

Paul hated it also. Martin was as bad as spector sometimes!
  12:45pm rw:

To paraphrase Iggy, "Feelin' alright, Mary!"
Avatar 12:45pm Hubig Pie:

David (iL) nooo, strokin' is about his worst song!
listen to "road of love" for an amazing horn arrangement
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm coelacanth∅:

(but then, that might've been Duane Allman's doing)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Carmichael:

Ehh, do you mean Clarence Clemons?
Avatar 12:49pm Mary Wing:

Hiya David W, Matt, Carmichael, and rw!! Ugh, why is my office so damn warm today?

Good afternoon, whatevers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm coelacanth∅:

sorry Carmichael...rest in peace Mr. Clemons; but if i could re-arrange Springsteen's music catalogue i'd omit the sax on most songs.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm coelacanth∅:

Bob played an alternate version of eastwest on big planet noise a while back. different and just as great. not commercially available and worth checking out
Avatar 1:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Can it be RagaRawk without even an Electric Sitar ? Why not yeah? I'd say it's a pretty successful combination of Blues elements & Modal / Indian elements.
Avatar 1:03pm Mary Wing:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Handy Haversack:

Yo, coela, spodi!

I have seen the Wing Bling! It's real. And it's spectacular!
  1:07pm WM:

Raga rock would include George Harrison's Love to You and Inner Light, any rock song that uses a sitar (Paint It Black, Hurdy-Gurdy Man), and also Endless Tunnel by Serpent Power. A brief fad in mid-60s rock & roll that nonetheless produced a few good songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm David (in London):

Rev, I saw Davy Graham's final gig, and it was one of the strangest and most memorable shows I think I ever saw. He knew he was dying, and it was like he had so much music inside of him that he couldn't play fast enough. He literally stopped songs half way through so he could start the next one. It felt very strange, but it was also very moving.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Mary and whatever wings!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 1:24pm Mary Wing:

Hi there, Ken! What's shaking today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm coelacanth∅:

...and, actual sitar. it's from Wyclef's "fast car"
  1:24pm davefromtoronto:

yes master...
  1:26pm WM:

@coelacanth: Yes, I was just thinking of The End. You could also include White Summer by Jimmy Page. (I think I read somewhere that Page originally wanted to use a sitar on Heart Full of Soul but settled for a guitar.)
Swag For Life Member 1:27pm spodiodi:

coel, i think it is indeed a sitar... at least that's what's indicated in the "Samples" section of it's wikipedia page en.wikipedia.org... (says Wycleff Jean sampled Bonita Applebaum's sitar riff)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Handy Haversack:

I hope Vancouver appreciated this!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 1:37pm Mary Wing:

  1:38pm davefromtoronto:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm coelacanth∅:

they've been forecasting rain &/or overcast almost every day for at least 3 weeks and it's only rained 1-2 x.
i want that job.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Handy Haversack:

When it doesn't rain for a while like this, Newtown Creek clarifies in some areas because there are no sewage overflows into it. I bet the reservoirs are fine after all that rain. Will water the roses and blueberries later, though!
Avatar 1:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

WM: 'White Summer' is a direct rip from DavyGraham's 'She Walked Thru the Fair' - a Trad Folk tune. & 'Heart Full of Soul' was still the JeffBeck yARdbiRdS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm David (in London):

Now I know that Thurston Moore is a local Stoke Newington boy and all now but *whispers this* I always preferred the SY tracks on which Lee sang.

Avatar 2:03pm βrian:

Michigan was beautiful, Handy. Doncha wish you were there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

Hey, Handy! It don't feel so much like work when you're doing it just because you want to, eh?
Avatar 2:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

He's 'Handy' for real.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Michael 98145:

A couple artists i haven't thought about for a very long time
Avatar 2:08pm βrian:

@RR: Is that a factotum?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm coelacanth∅:

i don't think i've ever heard of Lloyd Cole and the commotions but i know the Tori Amos version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Handy Haversack:

Arrrrgh, βrian, more than I can say!
Avatar 2:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

βrian - did FMU have factotums this year? Tote I'm using is all tatty by now...
I vote for #3 all stripped down.
Avatar 2:14pm βrian:

WFMU is the only place where one is truly entitled to one's own factotums.
Avatar 2:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

coela: You wouldn't like him - his horn arrangements are all Spectoresque.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm coelacanth∅:

thanks for the heads-up
Avatar 2:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

... j/k ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm coelacanth∅:

( i know ...or i assumed!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Handy Haversack:

I think I only ever really heard Lloyd Cole on a Leonard Cohen tribute album.
Swag For Life Member 2:17pm spodiodi:

nice 3OAK, Mary! Rattlesnakes was unfamiliar.
but i love Lloyd Cole's cover of Chelsea Hotel!
Swag For Life Member 2:18pm spodiodi:

Handy, stop typing so quickly, please. 🏁🍍
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm coelacanth∅:

jeez Handy i forgot about that. chelsea hotel i think?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

enjoying this set sooooo much!
Swag For Life Member 2:23pm spodiodi:

coel, if there's one person who routinely posts the comment in my mind before i do, it's Mr. Handy H.
Swag For Life Member 2:23pm spodiodi:

usually i delete my efforts in those cases :~( ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm coelacanth∅:

what a meanie that Handy is. you know he does it on purpose!
Avatar 2:24pm Mary Wing:

Heh, not only is there a race to be first comment on the playlist, but now there's a race to see who posts the first of the collective thoughts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm David (in London):

Mary, face it, you just set the pace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Michael 98145:

accu-mind
Avatar 2:26pm Mary Wing:

Thanks Granny Baba! A great song is up next, woo! Followed by maybe-okay songs, heh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

Mary: a full smörgåsbord!
Avatar 2:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Mary: a full smörgåsbord!

...Blast - !!...
Swag For Life Member 2:28pm spodiodi:

i like that which Bernstein bares
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Handy Haversack:

Sorry -- I barely have time to comment, so I have to make them count. Extra points for being in spodi's brain!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm chresti @Griffith Park:

BABA BEEKINS!
Avatar 2:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Damn but yer a multitasker Handy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm coelacanth∅:

i'll patiently wait through the great song for the maybe okay songs
  2:30pm rw:

This might just be the most sedate 100% ever.
Avatar 2:30pm Mary Wing:

Heh, the wait is never too long, coelacanth. :-)
Avatar 2:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ambient eclipse musics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm chresti @Griffith Park:

Mary, very soothing after chasing someone off the courts with their "service dogs"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Handy Haversack:

I haven't even eaten yet!
Avatar 2:32pm Mary Wing:

People actually need a support animal to play tennis, chresti??
  2:32pm rw:

chresti, did you catch the eclipse? I woke up at 4, looked for a couple minutes and went back to bed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm coelacanth∅:

chresti but, but... they have night terrors! they NEED their service dogs on the tennis court!
  2:33pm rw:

When I play tennis I usually let my dog serve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm David (in London):

Chresti, don't be so mean. That dog really needed to work on its backhand. (Backpaw)
Swag For Life Member 2:33pm spodiodi:

i was looking at the moon around 4am PST.... was unaware of any eclipse (it just looked like the moon)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm coelacanth∅:

badum bum
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Stanley:

Dogs that serve drinks, that's my kind of dogs.
Avatar 2:34pm Mary Wing:

<rimshot>
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm David (in London):

I'll get my coat.
Avatar 2:34pm Mary Wing:

coelacanth, stop tying so fast!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm chresti @Griffith Park:

I kind of lost it, coel. I was like "Service..for what?"
Swag For Life Member 2:35pm spodiodi:

speaking of dogs, i had better before bring in the cans before an opportunist neighbor decides to make another doggie doo-doo deposit (*shakes fist*)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm chresti @Griffith Park:

spodi, I looked for the moon, it was too cloudy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm David (in London):

Stanley, The Barman won't be happy about that kind of talk.
Swag For Life Member 2:36pm spodiodi:

OMG chresti, you're not allowed to ask!!!( *gasp*) shaky ground
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm coelacanth∅:

chresti, choose any of the above suggestions!
. . . you might change your tune when that dog serves you a cool beverage
Avatar 2:37pm Mary Wing:

Actually, I take that snide comment back. As much as I think service animals are mostly a gimmick, perhaps some folks have anxiety when traveling. So the animal is for the trip TO the courts, not for the actual tennis. Maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Handy Haversack:

OK, I am having a damn cider. STAYCATION!

Apples from up your way, coela.
Avatar 2:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Anyone for Tension ?
Swag For Life Member 2:38pm spodiodi:

it's been pretty bad in SF for years, Mary... everyone and their service dog has a service dog -- but yeah, gotta let every sheister slide for the sake of those who actually need them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm chresti @Griffith Park:

Haha rw and David and Stanley..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Stanley:

David, give my apologies to the Barman for thinking such a thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Michael 98145:

The moon was big and bright before it clouded over ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm David (in London):

Way to go Art Trip. A topic less covered in alternative music I feel.
Swag For Life Member 2:39pm spodiodi:

i sawr a veil of clouds in front of the moon, but that was 2 nights ago, i think
Swag For Life Member 2:40pm spodiodi:

i mentioned the veil to my love, and that it looked like the perfect sky for a horror movie (or murder, etc)
Avatar 2:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I'd be so much less anxious on the tennis court if there weren't such - rackets...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm coelacanth∅:

true Mary. - although i can't relate.
when i was little we weren't allowed to have issues like that; so we didn't.
Swag For Life Member 2:41pm spodiodi:

ha RRN63 :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm chresti @Griffith Park:

Thanks Mary and everyone for the excellent service!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Stanley:

David - I hope it replaces that awful tune for Bodyform in the tv ad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm David (in London):

Spod, I hope you did so in the same voice Gary Oldman used in Dracula.
“Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm coelacanth∅:

Handy can you sense my energy in that cider?
Avatar 2:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...tho' I've been working on my barkhand...
Avatar 2:43pm Mary Wing:

I can't relate either, coelacanth, but I am trying to be more empathetic, even though I make a face when I see someone bringing an obviously-not-a-service dog into a store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm coelacanth∅:

still waiting for the maybe okay songs Mary...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Stanley:

I could just go a tasty cider this sunny evening.
Cheers Handy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm David (in London):

Stanley, ha ha, that old classic. Did you ever see that 'Day Today' sketch with Chris Morris being Cobain in the faux Nirvana Tampax ad song?
"Body's little clock, could mess up your frock, you can wear them, in the High Street, very compact, very discrete"
Avatar 2:45pm Mary Wing:

This song makes me want to say that the walrus was Paul. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm coelacanth∅:

Mary i generally am. and i really don't care if people have service dogs that don't need them, as long as they respect that some people are onto the lie and don't make a fuss when called out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Michael 98145:

Why we have Auto-Tune
Avatar 2:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...this Beatlesque track is missing only a horn arrangement by Wyclef Jean to seal the deal for the ages...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Handy Haversack:

Cheers, Stanley!

"Classic-style" Abandoned Hard Cider, with apples from SUllivan, Ulster, Dutchess, and Columbia Counties. Wild and heirloom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm David (in London):

Mm, enjoyed that Beginner's Mynd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, Mary! Wish I'd had time to chat more with all you wonderful folx. See you later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Stanley:

Yeah, David - Panty Smile!
  2:49pm KWilde:

Heh! No 3 of a kind today? I'm late to the party
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm david w:

Wowie Zowie! Thanks, Mary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Stanley:

Très artisinal, Handy.
Avatar 2:51pm Mary Wing:

Hi KWilde! 3oak was an actual 3oak, heh, so it went by pretty quickly.
Avatar 2:51pm βrian:

Gotta go dig holes in the back yard. Thanks, Mary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm David (in London):

Stanley, just for you: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 2:52pm Sem:

Mary went minimalist on 3OAK, KWilde.
  2:52pm KWilde:

Oh I see it now. Thx
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Handy Haversack:

The cider store is on my way home from the pet-food store. Bagpipe never helps carry anything, so I usually end up feeling like I deserve a treat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm David (in London):

Can't you get some little panniers for him Handy?
Avatar 2:54pm Mary Wing:

Handy, does that cider store carry Woodchuck Pear cider by any chance? I never see it in supermarkets any more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Handy Haversack:

The idea has been bruited, David, but he has a tough union negotiator!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Stanley:

Yay, David, that's the one. 'A comfy pal that says never mind'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Carmichael:

Now THAT'S a service dog, David.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm David (in London):

What a truly ace show today Mary. Thank you so much.
Swag For Life Member 2:55pm spodiodi:

DiL, i should have, and thanks for replacing the Sid Oldman the Dracula Oldman (in my head, for the time being) :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Handy Haversack:

Hmmm, I don't think so, Mary. It *is* depressingly artisanal in there! No Woodchuck in sight, but they usually have some pear ciders.
Avatar 2:55pm Sem:

Good to see you again, Mary. Thx for the first rate whatever, be back for more next time. Later, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Carmichael:

Yeah, thanks Mary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Stanley:

Sheesh look at the time.
Enjoyable as always. Thanks Mary.
Later, friends.
Avatar 2:57pm Mary Wing:

Oh, artisanal ciders, I see... Well, might be worth a trip for artisanal pear cider if that is all I can find, heh
Swag For Life Member 2:57pm spodiodi:

muchas gracias Mary Wing!
see you next time!
cheers, all!
