My college roommate was music director at the college station at U Michigan (a place I reckon SM Ken also recalls). "Ariel" came in to the station in maybe 77, no one wanted to play it, so he played it on his show, and brought it home between shows, because we appreciated it as 20 year old college students. It evoked the quirky types you encountered around campus (including the female variety), and in dating life... Also fit in genre-wise with the 50s-revival trend seen in the 70s...

This Tripwires vocalist reminds me of someone from the seventies... sort of like Lindsey Buckingham, but not him... Someone else.

as 'wrong' (read: misguided) as atkins seems in retrospect, the actual SOUNDS the guy got were amazing!

And in the mid-50s DJ Fontana was house drummer at Louisiana Hayride- different mindset than N’ville?

MICHAEL GILLETTE:

I'm sorry I don't listen to your program until Sunday, but CBC did a bit on Randy Bachman (and also Taylor Swift, apparently) re-recording their music. Randy Bachman went so far as to duplicate as close as possible (vintage amplifiers; vintage recording equip.; etc.) the original BTO recordings. So, if someone wants to use "Takin' Care of Business" they can buy the rights from Randy and not Mercury.
Whatever happened to Bill Kelly? He was my other favourite.
