Lady C. Friends. Good evening/afternoon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Franco Twinkie:

Chresti, You just say that because you don't want me slamming the refrigerator door and burning tortillas at 3AM.

This is hands down the best Gimme Shelter cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Scott67:

Stanley, & morning mate.👍😎
  4:37pm Mark R:

This is actually a REALLY cool version of "Gimme Shelter." This could have been a seriously cheeseball affair, but I love it--the percussion's cool, Cal's great as always and whatever electronic effects they're using (like a synth wash or something?) is very effective at creating that stormy atmosphere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Stanley:

Scott. Good morning, sorry, didn't see you there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Franco Twinkie:

I have been looking for that Cal Tjader album for years.
Avatar 4:39pm LadyChanticleer:

Ice cream sounds good right 'bout now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Doug Schulkind:

So much better than the original.
Avatar 4:39pm LadyChanticleer:

LOL right Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Stanley:

Hey Doug, I was going to say that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Scott67:

So was I!
  4:41pm Mark R:

I respectfully disagree, Doug. The original is one of the greatest rock songs ever recorded. I know it's very chic to bash the Stones but at one time they were actually great, like when they recorded "Let It Bleed." I see you're all jumping on the bandwagon now. Well, I'm breaking off this longneck bottle and I'll take on all of ya bastards!
  4:41pm northguineahills:

I actually have this on cumbia and cumbia rebajada
Avatar 4:41pm LadyChanticleer:

  4:42pm Mark R:

Somebody else played La Cumbia Moderna de Soledad recently, was it you, Doug? Also, how do you make the upside down question marks on a Mac? I want to sound hip to my Latin friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Doug Schulkind:

@Mark R
I was referring to the Rod Stewart cover. And I never bash any music ever (except Billy Joel).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Franco Twinkie:

I agree Mark. That song will never loose it's sinister power.
Avatar 4:43pm LadyChanticleer:

Totally the Rod cover. Gimme Shelter don't get no shade from me.
  4:44pm Mark R:

Rod Stewart's cover is "the original"? OK.
Avatar 4:44pm LadyChanticleer:

I can bash Eric Clapton pretty hard to be honest. Otherwise, no bashing as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Stanley:

Mark R - steady on, man, 'twas the Rod Stewart cover we was dissing.
Avatar 4:44pm StringOFperils:

There should be actually BE a Rod Stewart cover, you know, like a gas-barbecue cover, a kind of form-fitting tartan affair to keep the rain off, and the schlock in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Stanley:

Gilbert O'Sullivan - come out man I'm always ready for ya!
Avatar 4:45pm LadyChanticleer:

Rod sampled. I wouldn't say it's a cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Scott67:

Stanley, it's fine mate, I'm easily overlooked. Like a Chameleon.
Avatar 4:46pm LadyChanticleer:

I would own that @StringOFperils
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Doug Schulkind:

@Lady C
Yeah, Eric Clapton can go right on under the bus.

Avatar 4:48pm LadyChanticleer:

I agree Stanley! I love me some Faces Rod.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Franco Twinkie:

The Stones get kicked by young people because they had the nerve to get old in public. The Stones get a finger wagged at them by moralizers because of Altamont. What can you do? Free speech - fuck those people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Stanley:

Hey coela. How's it hanging?
Avatar 4:49pm LadyChanticleer:

Charlie Watts aged rather well if you ask me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm coelacanth∅:

original gimme shelter rules. in the top 100 best songs of all songs!
i like Cal Tjader's, but Mary Clayton's is still my favorite cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Stanley:

Lady C. I got to see him live in 74. Unforgettable.
Avatar 4:50pm LadyChanticleer:

True that, coel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm coelacanth∅:

haha Charlie Watts was always older and still looks about the same!
Avatar 4:51pm LadyChanticleer:

I bet!
Avatar 4:51pm LadyChanticleer:

He always looked cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Stanley:

I loved it when Mary Clayton was with The Stones and had a couple of songs to herself while Mick took a break.
She couldn't help but blow him off the stage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm coelacanth∅:

Stanley @447 i don't know what corrupted him, but he sure was great before he sucked!

Hello, Stanley. A fine Spring day there, was it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm coelacanth∅:

hey David (iL)

...i think i'll always get a hint of sadness at the mention of Brian Jones.
Brian, the founder, original innovator, and soul of the 'stones
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm Stanley:

Sem, TBH a bit drizzly and yuk. Only got as far as the communal bin in the street today.
  5:03pm David in London:

And I missed all the Gimme Shelter discussion earlier. But it’s my favourite rock song of all time and no other version even comes close to The Stones’ in my book. (The Sisters of Mercy did a good version too, mind).

Stanloid, Semulator, Coela. Hello good people.
Avatar 5:05pm LadyChanticleer:

StringOFperils: Thank you!
  5:05pm Mark R:

I'm finding myself agreeing with all of you. Money is what corrupted Rod, Coel, as is usually the case. Stanley, I hate to be one of those people, but I don't believe Merry ever sang the song live with the Stones. For many years they toured with a wonderful backup singer named Lisa Fisher, and that's probably who you saw sing with them.
Avatar 5:06pm LadyChanticleer:

Same coelacanth. The heart and soul indeed.
Avatar 5:06pm Sem:

coel, I get that. That Godard footage from One Plus One, the Stones working on Sympathy, and Jones, just out of it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Stanley:

You are correct, Mark. Lisa Fischer and she too is wonderful.
Mary did cover the song, though, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm HyperDose:

Bubble bubble witchy vibes all around!
  5:08pm Mark R:

There have been a lot of cool covers of "Season of the Witch" but I love the vibe of Donovan's original the best. I'm not actually a huge Donovan fan but I think this album is a real classic. I also saw him opening up for Yes in the 70s (I know, I know), and I was surprised at how much I liked his set. He was promoting a new album and he was really quite good.
  5:08pm David in London:

Sem, yeah, I always feel sad watching that footage. Brian looks terrible, just as Mick and Keef are really starting to tick.
Avatar 5:08pm Little Danny:

Hell yeah and hello yeah Lady C!

Nice lookin' playlist.
  5:09pm David in London:

Mark R, did you see his new single, complete with David Lynch directed video? Amazing. Still unbelievably cool at 75.
Avatar 5:09pm LadyChanticleer:

I love me some Donovan, as many of you know
Avatar 5:09pm StringOFperils:

I like the cover of this on Super Session. [Al Kooper Mike Bloomfield Stephen Stills ]. Some kind of foundational life thing.
Avatar 5:09pm LadyChanticleer:

Hey hey LD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm coelacanth∅:

Thank you Mark @5.05 i'm compelled to correct myself - Merry, not Mary.
'sorry Merry, i'm usually on it!
Avatar 5:10pm LadyChanticleer:

I just realized this week that Al Cooper was attractive.... kind of freaked me out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Stanley:

coela - you got me doing the same.
Anyway the doc, Six Feet from Stardom is a must see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm Franco Twinkie:

The funny thing about that Goddard movie with the Stones is how stylish the studio looks. And don't even get me started on the cutaways to the revolutionaries pontificating in the junkyard!
Avatar 5:13pm LadyChanticleer:

100% Franco
Avatar 5:13pm Little Danny:

LadyC: I've been deep in the Brother Ah well since your show last week.
Avatar 5:15pm Little Danny:

This is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm coelacanth∅:

i hate to see Brian just standing there, unable to make himself play the guitar (i don't know if i saw the same footage, but, same deal i'm sure)
i can't help but think Mick and Keith kind of kicked him to the curb as expendable at that point. no help; just out.
then dead.
...in the inevitable analogy to Syd Barrett i think they really tried for a long time to get him help. not the same thing with Brian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm coelacanth∅:

haha Stanley @511 sorry!
Avatar 5:16pm LadyChanticleer:

Me too LD!
Avatar 5:17pm LadyChanticleer:

Those older records really kill me with Brother Ah
Avatar 5:18pm LadyChanticleer:

Avatar 5:18pm Little Danny:

I can't believe I slept on them for so long.
  5:19pm David in London:

This is rather nice.
  5:21pm Mark R:

Merry did indeed cover it and did a helluva job, too! I thought the Super Session version of "Season of the Witch" was cool, too. Regarding Brian, unfortunately I think he was one of those people who loved being a pop star even more than he loved playing music, and he was really good at playing music. He had a lot of insecurities, and his massive drug and alcohol intake exacerbated his personality issues. The film wasn't originally supposed to be about the Stones, they were supposed to have a small part in it, but the studio saw the appeal of having a lot more of the Stones and a lot less of the other stuff, which was Godard's intent. For my part, I was only ever interested in the Stones stuff. Yes, Mick and Keith were cruel and impatient with Brian as basically a cat who couldn't handle his dope, a guy whose drug convictions prevented them from touring, and a guy who a lot of nights didn't even bother showing up, and when he did, he was often too fucked up to play. But in their defense, they were only about 23 or 24, and I don't know how mature or enlightened you were at that age, but I would've kicked a guy like Brian to the curb in 5 seconds when I was 25. (I'm not proud of it, but there it is.) Well, Lady, you played one Stones cover about an hour ago and I'm still blathering on about it. I'll shut up now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm PaulRobeson1920:

@LadyChanticleer @5:10 somebody said to me once, completely seriously, “Dipping cookies in any kind of liquid freaks me out”

Digging the show, and Donovan! Yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm coelacanth∅:

what does this bass line remind me of???
Avatar 5:22pm Little Danny:

Avatar 5:24pm LadyChanticleer:

lol @ PaulRobeson1920! Thank you for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Franco Twinkie:

A scathing indictment Mark. But the Stones were the spawn of the devil and that's why we liked them.
  5:26pm ?:

Mark, for ¿ on a mac, hold the alt key before pressing ?
Avatar 5:26pm Little Danny:

@coela: It reminded me vaguely of the bassline from "24-Carat Black Theme."
  5:27pm David in London:

A friend of mine at college always claimed (jokingly) that she was Brian Jones’ love child. Then I found out that Brian Jones referred to his actual love child as ‘Broad Bean Head’. She then had to contend with that as a nick name for a while...
Avatar 5:28pm LadyChanticleer:

His love child was with Donovan's wife Linda

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Stanley:

Avatar 5:33pm Little Danny:

@coela: Great Stax LP from 1973: www.youtube.com... Upon a brief re-listen it didn't sound quite as much like the Doris as I'd first heard. Killer track either way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm coelacanth∅:

Danny i just listened to a few seconds of that track and *that* reminds me of vitamin c by can!
...it could go on and on!
(also the Doris track bass line is somewhat like that of inner city blues, but that's not what i was trying to think of)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm coelacanth∅:

haha Danny we keep passing each-other and yelling back to each-other!
Avatar 5:34pm Little Danny:

Yes, definitely that "Inner City Blues" looping, loping groove too!
Avatar 5:35pm LadyChanticleer:

I can hear that for sure

Danny i found it on spotify and put it on hold for later, the whole album.
as despicable a spotify is i'd still rather support that than gobble (youboob)
Thanks for the link though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Franco Twinkie:

I always thought Bonnie Dobson was some old folkie covered with branches and dry leaves when I heard The Deads cover of Morning Dew. Bird of Space shows that she was quite alive and full of life when studio production when into hyper drive.

Scott most years i don't choose until about now but swag is getting mailed out much much faster this year. i already got the 2 prizes i won a week ago and i've never gotten it sooner than july before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Scott67:

I better see what's going on with my Swag too. Haven't had any word about it yet?
Avatar 6:20pm Little Danny:

Ahh love this Sun Ra track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm chresti:

Goodnight David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Scott67:

Arghh! I just found an email from Joe McG in my Spam, dated 30 March. It seems I accidentally over pledged on top of my Swag for Life, which is already coming from my account. But as I read it, I still owe extra??? So nothing seems to have moved on my Swag Delivery??😐
Avatar 6:25pm Little Danny:

Scott, Joe McG is very good about clearing up any post-Marathon swag issues. I wouldn't hesitate to reach out to him.

(Sorry you have to deal with it though.)
Avatar 6:28pm Little Danny:

Love this, crazy sideways groove!
  6:29pm Milkies:

Yeah this track is sideways
Avatar 6:29pm LadyChanticleer:

Yep! A big favorite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm coelacanth∅:

Scott i always pledge above my s4L base amount and then get an email telling me the amount that will be deducted each month.
maybe it's just an understanding i have with joe to do that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Scott67:

Cheers Danny, I feel cheap to quibble over the amount . But exchange rate & Unemployment make it a bigger cost. I already troubled Joe with my first stuff up pledge. So I hope he isn't too busy as I bother him again.
  6:31pm Milkies:

BTW I’m new to the WFMU fam, and wasn’t expecting my swag until February. true story
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm Rich in Washington:

This is lovely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Rich in Washington:

Back to sorting records. Now the difficult choices of making a purge pile. :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Scott67:

Coel, only $13 is coming from my bank, after exchange added. So a lump sum must be expected on the rest. But that shouldn't stop S4L being posted should it? That deal is already done.
Avatar 6:34pm LadyChanticleer:

I just started refiling things from my alleged "purge pile"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm doctorjazz:

Back from Post-Vax Manhattan outing, fun (Chinatown Pig Out),here for the tail end.
Love this Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (tuba-tastic!)!
Avatar 6:38pm Little Danny:

Half of my purge pile winds up refiled, LC. It's all part of nature's cycle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm doctorjazz:

I've Alsohad post marathon pledge issues, and Joe usually clears them up quickly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm coelacanth∅:

Scott, 13 per month + a lump sum? if that's what you want i'm sure it can be accommodated.
but if you make it 15/month and a correspondingly smaller lump sum it might make it easier because that puts you in the next s4L bracket.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm coelacanth∅:

...but then, i don't know how it works with an exchange rate adjustment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm coelacanth∅:

hey dr.j Happy birthday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm doctorjazz:

I never bother with a purge pile because I can't stand to let go of any of my babies (which is why my house looks like it does...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Coal-birthday was Tuesday, but worked then, celebrate on the weekends.
Avatar 6:42pm LadyChanticleer:

I totally understand that DJ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Scott67:

Coel, think I may try to Up Yours my S4L. That will hurt less. The current rate means a US$ costs me about $1.30.
Avatar 6:44pm Little Danny:

Gotta slink off, Natalie. Wonderful as always.
Avatar 6:44pm LadyChanticleer:

Until next time, LD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Scott67:

Seeya Danny!✌😎
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Rich in Washington:

I sometimes put records into a 'rip that one song and get rid of the LP' pile or a 'play on my show and get rid of pile' but in either case, the longer the purge pile sticks around, the more likely that some albums make their way back into general population again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm doctorjazz:

Did people get their swag? I didn't get stuff yet, but, then again, I generally can't decide, and send in my requests after the marathon is over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Rich in Washington:

I just have to be brutal this time and I am running out of room and am shoehorning records into tight shelves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm doctorjazz:

The shelves are full, got piles on the floor (if I could figure out where to add shelves...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Rich in Washington:

I got my, doctorjazz, but it's probably going to be a somewhat slower process overall as not only is the USPS very slow right now (fire DeJoy), but also volunteer efforts are hampered somewhat by Covid and station access, I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Scott67:

Cheers Dr.J. I will summon the courage to email Joe. I'm more a over the phone kinda person, but will try to explain myself online.
Avatar 6:48pm LadyChanticleer:

Exactly! But also these days purchasing on criteria : 1.) Do I love more than one song? 2.) Is it weird? 3.) Does the album art contribute to the artifact as a whole?
Avatar 6:49pm LadyChanticleer:

That said, Arlo Guthrie was in the purge pile and then I was like "ok, fuck it, you can stay."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm doctorjazz:

@Scott67, had similar issues with my pledges and SFL-Joe always straightens it out (I've always am emailed, but you might be able to call).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm doctorjazz:

Putting albums in a purge file feels like cutting my intestines out (sounds better inn Yiddish...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm HyperDose:

Getting Elvin Bishop vibes from that melody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm coelacanth∅:

my let go of list is any record that has less than around 25 minutes on it that i really like.
-unless it has great album art; but it has to be really great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Scott67:

Dr.J, would be a novelty to phone US from Australia. I do get free calls tothere apparently. But never managed to get connected to Marty's Show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Rich in Washington:

I've purged nearly my whole record collection a few times when I used to move around and really didn't think I needed actual records, but I think I've found a sweet spot in terms of qty of records. I would just rather have them fit into my small studio space and have the surplus go to someone else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Scott67:

Thanks Lady.C, a lovely journey once more!
Avatar 6:58pm LadyChanticleer:

Same here Rich. I offloaded all of my LPs before I moved out here and found myself buying more en route!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm doctorjazz:

Scott67, I forgot where you are living, never mind.
Rich-that's why I think I'll be buried in this house, if have to do some major purge to downsize.
Thank, Lady C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for the journey, Lady C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Lady C!
take care y'all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm HyperDose:

Buying LPs en route? Now that's an addiction lol
Thanks Lady C, I'd listen for another three hours if I could!
Avatar 7:00pm LadyChanticleer:

Oh it's a full blown addiction
Avatar 7:01pm LadyChanticleer:

Thank you all! Until next time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm chresti:

Thank you Lady C!
Rich, you can do like Franco and stack your surplus records on the floor, like high rises!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm WR:

thank you Lady C
