A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@Robm
I was walking out the door with the radio still on; i do never turn it off

@Robm...Totally Agree!!

if the guidance is “never turn it off *and* never leave your home,” well, we’ve done that too

Hi JT. Never heard of Rodoreda. More homework, because of WFMU, darnit! Hee. | I admire the drawing or painting. Pencil? Pen? Surrealistic in a way.

@Mike W this station has kept me sane with COVID-19 and the election, the DJs like trouble always bring their a game

Shining Thursday greetings, Trouble and all the Troubled! Excellent art, excellent Malcolm X title, excellent Brooklyn Raga Massive. All-around excellence!
  9:13am headcleaner:

nice hearing this piece again... too bad the Massive got rained out of LIC, the other week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Mike W:

@Robm
yeah, to a pretty maximal degree in this household too. i made my first swag-fer-life pledge last year about 20 minutes before the lockdown, immediately and briefly regretted it due to my plummeting fortunes, then proceeded to extract the equivalent of $11 billion in psychic relief via months of listening
  9:14am JT:

@TDK Rodoreda was a Catalan writer who spent the Spanish Civil War in exile. highly recommended, underappreciated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Mike W:

...and upped my pledging this year by slashing my dog’s treat budget! [dog’s ears flick angrily]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Handy Haversack:

Will do, TDK60. He's lying in a sunbeam with the White Wind blowing all around him (cottonwood down the block).
  9:20am Skyzyx:

Hi Trouble and troublers. I read a book called “Sex and Broadcasting” 50 years ago. The author espoused the value of non-commercial, free form radio with eclectic playlists covering all genres of music from around the world.

WFMU embodies that principle, especially with shows like this one. I thank the DJs, the staff, Ken Friedman, the chatters, and the listeners that make this station possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Threemoons:

Morning Trouble, fellow Troublemakers, on a Triumphant Thursday. So glad to hear the news last night RE the Man in NJ laying off WFMU!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Webhamster Henry:

Hi modern world inhabitants!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Webhamster Henry:

@ Skyzyx that was Lorenzo Milam's book. He was the pied piper of non commercial radio.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am ChukAmok:

Good morning Mods!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am ChukAmok:

@Skyzyx There's a documentary on WFMU that takes its title from the very same book.
  9:26am Skyzyx:

@Webhamsterr I’ve bought that book twice. I don’t currently have a copy. I think I’ll buy it again. I saw the documentary by the same name. That’s how I learned about WFMU.
Avatar 9:26am Joe McG:

  9:31am Skyzyx:

@Threemoons I just read the article. That is, indeed good news. I can’t believe how fast that issue was turned around.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am steveo:

yikes just reading about transmitter battle stuff from before my time www.nytimes.com...

spurred by varied reports today of interference from WSHU this morning. yikes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Glistener MW:

!!! sorry to hear, Irene! Those sorts of things can affect me all day / week / seven years from now when I remember the incident when trying to get to sleep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Handy Haversack:

Ha, Irene, I'm going to go sit in the car from 11:30 to 1. No one on our block even moves anymore. We all just hang out in our cars.
Avatar 9:39am Avrilinmay:

all of this (sounds) is sounding amazing. Those birds chirping. I love it , always !
(had some luck this month to have some of them filling my mornings where I live now.Would love to record them someday for any interested ornithologists )
Avatar 9:41am Avrilinmay:

@Irene sorry you had to go through that ! as Glistener MW said ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am alanr:

wow....one of my fav albums (Roberta & Donny)....I feel better already! --except for my allergies to pollen)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Handy Haversack:

I put out nine pounds of birdseed yesterday. Almost all gone. The sparrows and starlings already have at least a first clutch of fledglings.
  9:42am Irene:

Handy, that’s usually the case on my block. This morning there were a number of ticketed cars that created problems, and some really stupid drivers who blocked everything up, forcing some of us to move to another block. Very tense for a bit but sorted with apologies all around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Glistener MW:

@Avrilinmay -- I highly recommend the "Songbirding" podcast I discovered recently! The host goes for trail walks in different kinds of bird-heavy areas at different times of day and year with a good quality field-mic and records the ambience, and offers minimal discussion of what the birds on that walk are. It hits the perfect balance for me of 90% ambience, 10% educational. ( songbirding.com )
  9:44am Irene:

At least I have Trouble’s show and our commenters community to ease me through it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Handy Haversack:

Feeling you, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Officer Pupp:

Roberta Flack is criminally underrated.
Avatar 9:46am Avrilinmay:

@ Glistener MW this sounds great! and interesting! I am now recalling those days empty of all sounds, except for the birds, during the very first lockdown
the most amazing thing, so weird, in the middle of such a tragedy
  9:47am Robm:

@Stevo lost all respect for WFUV because of rhat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am steveo:

same, robm, but it took me 30 years
Avatar 9:54am oshiwoshi:

thank you @ Glistener MW will definitely check it out
Avatar 9:55am Jesse Dorris:

Beautiful show this morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Trouble:

gracias@jesse!
  9:56am Irene:

Ronnie and steveo, I don’t listen to WFUV because of that fight, with the exception of Paul Cavalconte’s and Delphine Blue’s shows on occasion (they’re friends). It’s frustrating that so many larger organizations beat up on little ones like WFMU on the chance that they’ll crumble under the pressure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Hughie Considine:

"Amsterdam" is a word that sings really well...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am steveo:

yeah really a drag Irene -- sorry to bring it up when you're already having a tricky day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am redbee:

@Glistener MW thanks for sharing that podcast! I'm working on learning birdcalls and I've struggled to find good bird-related (or even nature-related) podcasts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am steveo:

the good news is that WFMU has gone STEREO!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am redbee:

Avatar 10:06am Avrilinmay:

ouf! great news!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Glistener MW:

happy to share! Birding's something I've been trying to get into this past pandemic year. The Audubon Society's birdwatching app is surprisingly well-designed too, in the way it narrows-down birds that should be in your area (with location-data turned on) to show which ones you're likely looking-at right now
Avatar 10:07am Hubig Pie:

Peoples have the power
  10:08am Irene:

Not a problem, steveo! At least we seem to have defeated the latest challenge to WFMU, thanks to you wonderful listeners and my WNYC pals who put a few well-placed reports on air about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Glistener MW:

@redbee -- thank you, I just added the Mushroom Hour now! I've gotten very into mycology/forging over the past few summers ever since seeing Ron Mann's wonderful documentary "Know Your Mushrooms"
  10:09am oscarfate:

if you're ever in Detroit please pay a visit to King Solomon Baptist Church, where Malcolm X delivered that speech
  10:11am Cheers!:

There was an interesting pair of obituaries on the same day in the NY times many many years ago, it was the woman who founded Clairol on one side of the page, and the woman who created the macrobiotic diet on the other. I've been meaning to go back and look at that page again for a long time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am steveo:

Amen to that, Irene!

Now I'm down a NY Times rabbit hole, reading about how Laura Cantrell revived the Tennessee Border show on WKCR in the 80s -- wow!
  10:13am Creston:

This is an absolutely beautiful rendition of miles Davis!!
  10:13am Irene:

Ahhh, “In a Silent Way,” adding to the beauty of this show.
Avatar 10:14am Listener Gregory:

@Creston, Miles recorded the tune, but it was written by Joe Zawinul. This IS a fantastic version!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Handy Haversack:

Just perfect.
  10:24am WM:

The statement of Malcom X needs to be updated and corrected. Solidarity in Poland did, in fact, bring about a non-violent revolution against a government and political system that was very much willing to use violence. The Tunisia Revolution during the Arab Spring was also non-violent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am redbee:

@Glistener MW: haven't seen that documentary, thanks for the recc! I started learning mushroom identification last year, but I'm afraid I might've forgotten everything over the winter, hah

Malcolm's views were evolving (and violently halted). But his critique is still informative, in a nation that still has Confederate statues in public!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am karlward:

Don't forget the Internet
  10:35am headcleaner:

what was sad about that particular speech was that it idolizes "Revolution" for its own sake - and "revolution at any cost", at that. That's a generic failure of radical movements of -any- kind, and has nothing to do with socialism, capitalism as such
  10:36am sweir:

this is so good! thank you Trouble!

Venezuela is not a good example, given that Maduro wasn't really pro-democracy.

"No, that would be socialism!"
  10:48am H Given:

God damn you're ugly

@rich - what's sublime and beautiful about that the comments board is that while "talking point" discussions do inevitably bubble up - they tend not to find much echo, and so fade out pretty quickly.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am redbee:

I'm a Stamets fan but would not recommend his actual supplement/products! In spite of all of his good talk, he fills his pills with myceliated grain (the substrate... or "roots" to be totally inaccurate) as filler, as opposed to the fruiting bodies (where all the good stuff is). Donno what the ratio is, but any amount of grain is a rip-off

I think it's less confusing if you say "EXCITEMENT OF THE SAFETY FROM DEATH." The other way ("EXCITEMENT FROM THE SAFETY OF DEATH") would mean that death is safety and you are therefore excited about the safety you will get from death, which is probably the opposite of what you mean. Probably. I hope.

@KPX I ended up w/Pfizer because that’s what they had but I don’t think there is any true scientifically observable or statistically significant difference between Pfizer and Moderna. Differences noted by commenters are anecdotal. They have the same basis (the tech for a general overall coronavirus vaccine was already being worked on before the pandemic) and are quite similar as I understand it.
