Hi friends. One important consideration for small biz owners developing a marketing plan: solely advertising through social media is a major driver in the destruction of newspapers. Newspapers need ads to survive. I’ve been on both sides: I owned a shop and felt the financial pinch. And, I was a reporter who had to quit because of the stress of working for a cash-strapped newspaper. If possible, spend some money to support your local paper.

The city of Jersey City has asked WFMU to prove that its programming has educational value, as a condition of keeping its tax exemption. This is a serious matter to the financial health of the station.

As part of this effort, we're asking our listeners to provide letters or emails explaining how and why WFMU's programming has not just entertained them, but has also provided educational value. The educational value can be related to the history and relationship between culture or ideas, or more direct value such as information about any matters of public importance. Tell us how you have gained knowledge through the time you have spent listening to WFMU.

This is a serious effort to address an important disagreement WFMU is having with the city of Jersey City. Whether you are an educator, a student or merely a student of life, please help us out with a thoughtful letter or email, and please keep them to 300 words. Letters should address the City of Jersey City, and can be emailed to helpus@wfmu.org by May 28th. Thank you for your help.

"So let's all put these thoughts in letters! If anyone hates writing and just can't stand the thought of putting together, 300 words, contact me through my profile and send me your bullet points or summary, and I'll draft a letter and send it back to you so you can submit it. Use this stupid master's degree for *something* worthwhile."

From “Fun With Your Camera” 1947

-
...he wants to make pictures that are alive, vital, and brilliant both as subject matter and technique. In this respect, the amateur would do well to imitate the news photographer, whose success is measure by the vitality in his pictures.

But all this photographic education, which is showered upon the amateur, whether from literature, club talks, or exhibitions, can offer little substitute for practical experience in the handling of a camera and the making of worth-while pictures. Personal experience still remains the chief method of learning! You learn photography by doing photography.

greetings, Mark! Techtonics!
excellent, informative interview -- as it turns out, today i have been working on consolidating/sorting/purging photos -- two old phones, desktop computer . . . not to mention trying to streamline social media -- THANK YOU!
and yeah, i totally get the quandary facing small businesses, those who are self-employed, etc. -- years ago, my impression was that it was somewhat important to have some sort of presence on various social media platforms (and depending on the issue, it could help with activism/advocacy too) . . . but NOW, it is like one would have to spend way too much time managing social media -- and unless you hire someone specific to do that, you end up spending all your time and energy on social media, and no time on your own endeavors

@Chresti: Non-profits that own property are not exempt from municipal property tax. Educational institutions often are, but usually only for parts of properties that are strictly for instruction. Some towns will form agreements with schools called Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILOTS) to compensate the town for infrastructure like road wear, emergency services etc.

I've had external drives fail over the years. I was able to pull the drives out of the enclosures and get the data off of those drives in all but one case. So that, plus the value of having a backup in a different physical location is what pushed me to use cloud backup. Carbonite in my case. If a flood or fire damages my home and contents, I can still get the files back.

Payments in lieu of taxes to the school system is a voluntary agreement by the municipality. They are not bound to do so, which has been the criticism of PILOTs
In Jersey City’s case the school district doesn’t get anything unless the city volunteers to give it. Also the school district is in a budget crunch since it received less state aid this year. That might explain why the city is challenging FMU’s educational status. Full disclosure- I’m a journalist who has written about these issues in other municipalities.
