  6:03pm David in London:

Handy, ultradamno, webhamster, James, kevlicki. Howdy all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm ultradamno:

So there was some talk about the robot dog ep of Black Mirror recently. The new, third season of the Netflix show Love, Death + Robots just came out and the first ep of it does all that did and more in 12 minutes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm ultradamno:

Hey DiL!

  6:05pm kevlicki:

Mark thanks for exposing me to The death of the artist, incredible book that is super pertinent to my community
  6:05pm David in London:

Phillippe, how are you sir?
HyperDose, hey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Handy Haversack:

I saw the Techtonic shirt last week while stuffing envelopes. It looks great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Webhamster Henry:

Amazon's cloud storage and services underlie a lot of big and small businesses.
  6:07pm Marci B:

Yes Webhamster Henry - that is 100% correct!
Avatar 6:07pm spacecadet:

Algorithms of Oppression has a great discussion on this exact issue in an interview with a woman who runs a hair salon for black women - how she can't escape using Yelp or Facebook.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm HyperDose:

Hey David & Phillippe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm PaulRobeson1920:

Those services have become paths of least resistance
Avatar 6:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I see it as two issues ? :
1.) What effect the Techs have on Humans - & Human Society. (& oh the Natural Environment too...)
2.) The Tech Monopolies having nefarious control over them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello, Mark. The heck with Frankentech!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Phillippe:

Hey HyperDose!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Handy Haversack:

Though also not to forget the article from one of Mark's guests: news.artnet.com..., "Why Facebook is a Waste of Time – and Money – for Arts Nonprofits," by Steve Lambert.

The fear is massive that no one will find you without working those platforms, but how much time and effort go into that work? What could you do with those resources if you pulled out?

Looking forward to the conversation!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm queems:

i have 80,000+ photos on various hard drives
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Mark Hurst:

@spacecadet it's a great case study.. coincidentally, when I interviewed the author (Safiya Noble) we discussed that EXACT case study: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm G:

Google and Fakebook came along at the 'right time' (the 00s) when hundreds of millions were massively adopting the WWW. Poor old Altavista and MySpace etc. just peaked too early

@queems nice to see you! thanks for joining!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Webhamster Henry:

@G And .. Google +
  6:11pm Marci B:

queems- that's a lot of photos! and I bet there are probably analog prints too!
Avatar 6:11pm spacecadet:

@Mark Hurst, I'll have to add that show to my listen list! thanks
Avatar 6:12pm herb.nyc:

I’m v sure I’ve posted this before, hut here goes: a headline in The Onion was “internet collapses under weight of baby photos”.

May these 2 rip into mark hurst’s arguments!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Chop Scott:

Good Evening Mark--and Marci & Chris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm nathan:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Mark Hurst:

@Marci, thanks for joining in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Handy Haversack:

(Also, queems, not sure if you saw this at the end of Radio Ravioli, but K8 has now endorsed this statement: queems, let's plan a beach meet-up some time. You and K8 have very similar beach philosophies! There's what we call the "hipster bus" that we have used to go to Rockaway or Tilden that is pretty cool. They rent chairs and umbrellas and even give you a beer!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Mark Hurst:

@spacecadet sure thing - the book is a good read, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm brainiac:

Hi, I have a quick question for the techs:
I'm using the app for the 1st time today, and I'm hearing ambient stuff instead of the Mark's show. However the readout says "Mark's intro"

Is Techtonic unavailable on the FMU app?
  6:13pm Marci B:

@ChopScott @Mark Hurst great to be here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Webhamster Henry:

"Photos" is using its ML engine to catalog photos with face recognition, and I'm sure it'll get more sophisticated, just saying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Mark Hurst:

@brainiac that's strange - the app should play it ok. maybe try going through the website at wfmu.org and see if it plays there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm brainiac:

I'll check it out...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Mark Hurst:

@kevlicki great to hear that you're enjoying the Bill Deresiewicz book - that was one of my favorites of 2020

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm efd:

@braniac I just opened the app and Techtonic started playing right away. Maybe check to make sure you have the right stream selected?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Webhamster Henry:

I've turned of the Cloudy part of Photos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm queems:

@mark hello! good to be here! @marci yes! some of them are in books, many of them are on tumblr. i don't use cloud services, so i mostly have them backed up to 3 external hard drives (redundantly) and many are still on my computer. and then my computer is backed up on a different hard drive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm chris in the redwoods:

hi, Mark and folks.
i endorse "love death and robots" as well. some thoughtful short stories there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Webhamster Henry:

Photos slideshow ignores the order you use when you create it, instead ordering by the EXIF date, which drove me nuts for a few hours last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm queems:

@handy that would be SO COOL. i have a car, so i'll go wherever. and even bring a cooler and an umbrella! shoot me an email if you want to go!
Avatar 6:17pm herb.nyc:

Ha, that’s a great Bill Gates meme.

My photos? They’re in disarray. But not totally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm HyperDose:

@queems Have you ever looked into NAS or RAID systems?
  6:18pm Marci B:

Hi Mark and Chop, and all who have tuned in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm queems:

today i took a photo of a pink rock. actually multiple photos of it. and i don't delete anything because "what if i need it later"
  6:18pm Roland from Australia:

Good morning All, a bit late to the party, everyone wants the other player to be in the dark and uneducated. Even the education system! Yeah photos are my weak link. Even the government wants us passive, If you make a noise the other side shut you down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm queems:

@hyperdose hello! i have not!
  6:19pm Chris George:

That last hello from Marci was really from me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Handy Haversack:

We don't have phones but have a digital camera that we then have to DL the photos to the computer. I would think this decreases our photo totals by an order of magnitude compared to most Murican folks these days.
Avatar 6:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

In fairness that sounds like an awesome rock.
Avatar 6:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm brainiac:

Thanks for the suggestions. @Mark: Yes, I get the show when I press play on the homepage via radiorethink.com/tuner/

The app is now also playing Techtonic as well, so all is well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm G:

Won't people get sick of too many saved photos? The pendulum always swings from one extreme to the other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Webhamster Henry:

I explicitly mentioned Techtonic in my Jersey City letter.
Avatar 6:21pm herb.nyc:

Today, I’ve taken about 50 pix, 14 retained so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Mark Hurst:

@Webham thanks! I'll be reading the JC announcement after the interview.
Avatar 6:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...cleary it's about Taking photos
...not ever Looking @ them again !
...after all yer busy Taking Photos...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm HyperDose:

@queems Hey! Sounds like you're at the point where I was a few years back. Tons of data and exhausted from keeping up with multiple hard drives. These methods do the work for you, but do have their differences. I've tried both and found a RAID 1 (redundancy) configuration is best for my needs. I could also see you benefiting from a NAS system where you just swap out a drive when it goes bad.
Here's a good place to start: www.enterprisestorageforum.com...

One pic I’ve taken today is of Jesse M walking on 1st Ave. He a rocker and friend of glen jones. It’s deleted.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I hold up my phone in front of my doorbell camera and flip through my photos. The people on the other end organize the photos.

it seems that i really need to start making photo books again
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Handy Haversack:

Righto, Rev Rab. Not that I use one. Or anything. Just, you know, "don't drop the computer again!"
  6:27pm Marci:

@G: that is quite an archive!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm HyperDose:

I would think it depends on who owns said cloud service. Most people I've come across swear by Carbonite. Have no opinion of them myself.
Avatar 6:28pm Fox:

Any thoughts on flickr?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm suzyhotrod:

I used to use Crashplan. Is Carbonite a good alternative?
  6:29pm Marci:

@HyperDose- Carbonite + BackBlaze are great!

  6:30pm Marci:

@moparlarry- depends on the size storage you need. Thumb drives don't hold as much info. But they are getting bigger + faster - we like SansDisk.
  6:31pm markinbrooklyn:

Any suggestions for good printing service?
I could never get a decent print from my home printer...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Phillippe:

Loving this conversation. I don't know if it's similarly evil, but I find a lot of local business recommendations through Next Door. I won't do FB, Instagram, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Mark Hurst:

I'd be careful with BackBlaze - they were recently caught (apparently) starting to share data with Facebook. I haven't looked into Carbonite in a number of years.
  6:34pm Marci:

@Ed- Flickr was bought by SmugMug. So that might help save them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Handy Haversack:

Would be interesting (at least in theory) if photo-storage programs had a built-in delete date. Mark it "necessary" within 30 days or it goes away forever.
  6:35pm Marci:

@Mark Hurst - ouch! Good to know!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm PaulRobeson1920:

- From late 1940’s book called “Fun With Your Camera”

-
“Is Photography an art, or isn’t it? Who cares? The few who do are but a drop in the bucket compared to the hundreds of thousands of all ages and both sexes who follow photography for the fun that they get out of it. And the fun that they get out of it is plenty...”
  6:35pm wendy del formaggio:

Hi friends. One important consideration for small biz owners developing a marketing plan: solely advertising through social media is a major driver in the destruction of newspapers. Newspapers need ads to survive. I’ve been on both sides: I owned a shop and felt the financial pinch. And, I was a reporter who had to quit because of the stress of working for a cash-strapped newspaper. If possible, spend some money to support your local paper.
  6:35pm ed:

Good to know Marci. I've downloaded my pics from Flickr quite a few times just in case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Mark Hurst:

@Wendy great point, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Handy Haversack:

As long as you do it in front of the doorbell, it should work, right, Ken?
  6:38pm Roland from Australia:

My lad is doing more on his own website and less on social this way he creates a body of work that he can reuse, and that which is his own. You have to live in a small town for decent word of mouth,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Webhamster Henry:

A lot of local newspapers have been sucked dry by huge conglomerates that buy up local papers. It's hard to actually support them when they give back so little, and actually aren't local.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm ヱkョ:

Farcebook is evil trash but if I had that type of small biz, I would consider keeping the Fakeblurp account and just posting half-baked random bullshit on there every day to feed the monster and keep it happy. Just slap something up there. Or copy and chop up your e-mail newsletter and post sentences from that on there.

@Handy You can set the trash (which is really just a temp folder) to auto-delete on most phones and storage apps/services now. They usually give you a 30 day or other time options if you're lucky.
  6:39pm wendy del formaggio:

WHenry: Do you know why conglomerates like Gannett et al are buying up local newspapers? Because they are struggling and the owners can’t refuse the offer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Richy4619:

I sent my letter in wearing my president of an educational not-for-profit hat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm queems:

i mentioned techtonic in my letter!
Avatar 6:46pm cosmic matrix:

wow, omg. i will write a letter. those dorks.
  6:47pm Peter from Dover NJ:

Mark, I've already sent an email to WFMU. But this is strictly a property tax grab. Educational value is a pretext. When the dust settles, perhaps you can address this.
  6:47pm Marci:

Will be sending an email asap!
  6:47pm Brenna:

Will send a letter for WFMU! <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Handy Haversack:

Reposting my comment from WAB:

"So let's all put these thoughts in letters! If anyone hates writing and just can't stand the thought of putting together, 300 words, contact me through my profile and send me your bullet points or summary, and I'll draft a letter and send it back to you so you can submit it. Use this stupid master's degree for *something* worthwhile."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Webhamster Henry:

iCloud upsells you relentlessly.

How can they tax a non-profit?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm HyperDose:

haha cosmic. I share your enthusiasm!
Avatar 6:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Peter - probly a very good point.
  6:48pm Roland from Australia:

Such a great station, (WFMU) reached me all the way down here in Australia, I do consider it educational as well as entertaining. Where else are we gonna hear the sorts of things that we hear and learn on WFMU?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Webhamster Henry:

Well, recent iPads/iPhones now allow external storage.
Avatar 6:49pm cosmic matrix:

@mark, i've always been frustrated by how hard it is to cull and delete pix on my ipad!! fo real
  6:50pm moparlarry:

Can I just add a big WTF Jersey City? Challenging WFMU’s tax exempt status when the city has handed out tax abatements to developers like they’re Candy? Oh, they’re getting an email.....
Avatar 6:50pm Bas NL:

Educational is now the new non-profit?
  6:50pm Robm:

@Chestrj place’s like jersey city have ways to weasel money out of non profits
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The Kids are into Snapchat these days, where the photos disappear after viewing. I suspect they keep the photos on their servers, though.
Avatar 6:50pm herb.nyc:

I’ve stopped the automatic upload to iCloud. And if my fotos ever got lost or deleted, I’ll be upset for 20’. Then I’m over it.
Avatar 6:51pm solo mon:

This stuff you can’t even learn in schools!!!

From “Fun With Your Camera” 1947

-
...he wants to make pictures that are alive, vital, and brilliant both as subject matter and technique. In this respect, the amateur would do well to imitate the news photographer, whose success is measure by the vitality in his pictures.

But all this photographic education, which is showered upon the amateur, whether from literature, club talks, or exhibitions, can offer little substitute for practical experience in the handling of a camera and the making of worth-while pictures. Personal experience still remains the chief method of learning! You learn photography by doing photography.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm queems:

also you can convert your shitty live photos to gifs. i hate live photos
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm McGroovey:

I save all my photos and other files on my own backup drives. It would never occur to me to pay someone else to store my data. It's just my pre-fast-internet-access habits, I guess.
  6:52pm birdbird:

the stole the live photos from harry potter
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm ultradamno:

I use external drives, I wouldn't consider the cloud for any serious form of storage.
Avatar 6:52pm slugluv1313:

greetings, Mark! Techtonics!
excellent, informative interview -- as it turns out, today i have been working on consolidating/sorting/purging photos -- two old phones, desktop computer . . . not to mention trying to streamline social media -- THANK YOU!
and yeah, i totally get the quandary facing small businesses, those who are self-employed, etc. -- years ago, my impression was that it was somewhat important to have some sort of presence on various social media platforms (and depending on the issue, it could help with activism/advocacy too) . . . but NOW, it is like one would have to spend way too much time managing social media -- and unless you hire someone specific to do that, you end up spending all your time and energy on social media, and no time on your own endeavors
  6:54pm wendy del formaggio:

@Chresti: Non-profits that own property are not exempt from municipal property tax. Educational institutions often are, but usually only for parts of properties that are strictly for instruction. Some towns will form agreements with schools called Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILOTS) to compensate the town for infrastructure like road wear, emergency services etc.
  6:54pm Chris George:

Yes Mark, great point. Live Photos are recording audio as well.
Avatar 6:54pm herb.nyc:

I take video on the lowest quality on my iPhone se.

What? Live Photo does that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm MyAcademy:

Running Lineage (without GApps) or Graphene OS on a supported Android device is a swell way to avoid Google's ecosystem and have more control over your privacy and security.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Again, is the City of Jersey City listening?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm HyperDose:

Only peace of mind cloud storage would give me would be in case of fire, flood, or theft. The only convenience being remote access.
Avatar 6:55pm solo mon:

Eewww! Live photos! Noooooo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm chresti:

Thanks Wendy!
  6:55pm Marci:

@herb.nyc - yes, it's frightening. And Apple shared that info on their website!
Avatar 6:55pm Bas NL:

I think there's a legal difference between photos and videos? Once it was videos were not considered proof in court? Surveillance recorders store single frame pictures instead of videos.
Avatar 6:56pm cosmic matrix:

haha i have a 5s! doesn't have it apparently
  6:56pm Marci:

Thanks all - we love Techtonic and WFMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Handy Haversack:

Thanks, Mark!

And thanks again, Marci and Chris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm chresti:

How does the city define "educational"? I wonder..
  6:57pm Chris George:

Thanks so much Mark, and all who tuned in! It was a pleasure being on Techtonic!
Avatar 6:57pm cosmic matrix:

very important and well-done show! thanks mark and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm tim from champaign (now washington):

Thanks, Mark!
Avatar 6:57pm Constance De Witt:

Thanks Mark. Marci & Chris. I've always tended to take very little photos and I am very delete-happy so have few.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Will the Sound Guy:

I keep my photos on my nas
  6:57pm Sam:

Alexa - organize my photos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm ヱkョ:

@cosmic yes in many ways the earlier iPhones are better — esp. since they have mother-effing HEADPHONE JACKS but also no creepy “Live Photo” feature
Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Mike From Brooklyn:

I've had external drives fail over the years. I was able to pull the drives out of the enclosures and get the data off of those drives in all but one case. So that, plus the value of having a backup in a different physical location is what pushed me to use cloud backup. Carbonite in my case. If a flood or fire damages my home and contents, I can still get the files back.
Avatar 6:58pm cosmic matrix:

this show = educational, dammit
Avatar 6:58pm slugluv1313:

thanks again, Mark!
  6:58pm wendy del formaggio:

Thanks for airing my comment Mark. And thanks for another EDUCATIONAL show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm HyperDose:

Most informative and educational show I've heard in a while. Thanks Mark, Marci, & Chris! =]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Handy Haversack:

Here's a pro tip: Not photos. Tattoos.
  6:58pm Alexa:

I organized them for you. 1.5 seconds before you even asked me to. Woooohahahahahaha!!
  6:58pm Marci:

@Will the Sound Guy- we just started working with a NAS. Good idea!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm chresti:

Haha Sam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Webhamster Henry:

I'm taking a selfie of me and the screen right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm ultradamno:

Is this his song about who owns the media?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm McGroovey:

One option an organization has sometimes is to shop around for a municipality that gives a better tax deal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Mark Hurst:

Thanks, everyone! Especially good conversation this evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm queems:

i walked away and was like is this van morrison?
  7:00pm Chris George:

@Mike - I hear you. The cloud serves a purpose for sure. We're not anti-cloud we just need a safe and secure balance between cloud and nonproprietary backups.
  7:00pm moparlarry:

Payments in lieu of taxes to the school system is a voluntary agreement by the municipality. They are not bound to do so, which has been the criticism of PILOTs
In Jersey City’s case the school district doesn’t get anything unless the city volunteers to give it. Also the school district is in a budget crunch since it received less state aid this year. That might explain why the city is challenging FMU’s educational status. Full disclosure- I’m a journalist who has written about these issues in other municipalities.
  7:00pm Meesha:

Thank you for another great show, Mark! Penning my letter to JC now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Will the Sound Guy:

I have all my audio and video from shows i run on 2 drives and my personal stuff on 2 others... Keep a physical copy on another drive somewhere else
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm chresti:

Thanks for the fine class, Mr. Hurst!
Avatar 7:00pm Bas NL:

Thanks Mark!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Will the Sound Guy:

Thank you Mark!
Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Mike From Brooklyn:

@Chris George - I agree with you. I would never use a free service such as Google or Apple's cloud storage for lack of privacy, etc..
