Good morning Joe! Good morning yip yips fan club! What’s all of the business with the City of Jersey City trying to squeeze the station?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Handy Haversack:

Hey, Threemoons, Marley!

Pasting:

The city of Jersey City has asked WFMU to prove that its programming has educational value, as a condition of keeping its tax exemption. This is a serious matter to the financial health of the station.

As part of this effort, we're asking our listeners to provide letters or emails explaining how and why WFMU's programming has not just entertained them, but has also provided educational value. The educational value can be related to the history and relationship between culture or ideas, or more direct value such as information about any matters of public importance. Tell us how you have gained knowledge through the time you have spent listening to WFMU.

This is a serious effort to address an important disagreement WFMU is having with the city of Jersey City. Whether you are an educator, a student or merely a student of life, please help us out with a thoughtful letter or email, and please keep them to 300 words. Letters should address the City of Jersey City, and can be emailed to helpus@wfmu.org by May 28th. Thank you for your help.

Avatar 9:05am TDK60:

Good morning DJ Joe McGasko. I was told this is the class where we learn about the technology of the past, like the 45-Revolutions-Per-Minute records also colloquially called "7 inches". And they even play them to show what life was like. Etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am G:

Genesis's first superpoppy song -- oh, the memories lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am McGroovey:

I don't remember if this is Peter Gabriel, or Phil Collins. Sometimes I can't tell them apart.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am G:

Yes, Gabriel left like three albums earlier, in 1975, after Lamb Lies Down
Swag For Life Member 9:07am 12539:

That was Phil. Peter was already up on Solsbury Hill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am LastWhiteRhino:

Is it bad that because of Bret Easton Ellis I can never hear Genesis or Huey Lewis without thinking of murder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Handy Haversack:

Asheville Jon, yup. Clay announced it. Ken came on the board to reinforce.

Also, I packed a swag envelope for a John in Asheville. I would have written a tiny hello on it, but that "h" made me doubt whether it was you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am DJ Guin:

Anyone know someone or have they/you ever attended an ayahuasca ceremony?

I don't know about Genesis but at least Huey had a little fun with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am nathan:

@DJGuin my friend used to do those. maybe still does?
Avatar 9:10am TDK60:

Was Phil Collins imitating Gabriel's raspy voice or was it coincidental? I need to know, /learn/ ya know..
Avatar 9:10am Joe McG:

Good morning, everybody, and welcome to the radio program!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Asheville Jon:

my brain hurts after hearing philth collins' voice the very first thing when i turned on wfmu this morning.

thanks for the info Handy. i'll try to write a letter this week.
and thanks for the swag envelope. i can hope it was from you. would not have had much in it, a t-shirt and a sticker. i don't think i got anything else
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am G:

@TDK -- the group auditioned many possible singers after Gabriel left, then decided Collins would do just fine. Yes, a little bit similar voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Asheville Jon:

ABBA!!!! makes up for the philth collins

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am DJ Guin:

@nathan -- my interest is purely for mental health reasons. i located a place in Update NY and i am weighing the risks v benefits. I am seeking some anecdotal feedback.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am YETI BOB:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am YETI BOB:

DJ Guin: I brewed a batch of it in the early 2000s. I went on a camping trip with a friend where we tried it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am DJ Guin:

@YETI -- see? and they say this station is un-educated-able -- tell me more
Avatar 9:13am Joe McG:

@Krys: Ha ha, you're a genius. The new ABBA/Genesis tribute band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am YETI BOB:

@Joe: Real niche marketing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am YETI BOB:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Handy Haversack:

DJG, no direct experience, but I am SUPER wary of the white-yuppie-dominated "professional" ayahuasca shaman caste. A lot of these guys I have heard of seem totally full of crap.
  9:17am Brian in garden:

Is this a Donovan cover?
Avatar 9:17am Joe McG:

Hang in there, theia!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am theia:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am DJ Guin:

@Handy -- excellent point. i am diligent in decisions like this, but value input from the comments board.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Threemoons:

@Handy came here to say that. It just seems appropriative in many cases...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am YETI BOB:

DJ Guin - Handy is right, the scene has changed a bit since 2000, there are "bullshit" shamans out there but you can smell them from a mile away. If you have good feelings about the opportunity you have, go for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am nathan:

nuthin beats taking shrooms and wandering around the park, imho
Avatar 9:20am Dano59:

so, does "college of musical knowledge" and bountiful resource of coping tips for a troubled world count?
Seriously, I'd put Mark Hurst's show up as an example of a core course on the syllabus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am YETI BOB:

Also if you are fighting depression, psilocybin mushrooms are known to be helpful... just like Nathan said
  9:21am JT:

psilocybin in inhaler form is around the corner
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Marley P. Dogg:

Theia - hanging in there - sending peaceful thoughts
Avatar 9:21am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

DJ Guin: There's a lot of research & interest in mushrooms for trading depression now.
...My musing on it is ...I have thot that regarding Psychedelics as Medicine is a positive development - from both directions : For the counterculture that deals with them too casually - & the establishment that demonizes them ! One commentator did make the case they should be called the Elxixers - not Medicine: They aren't just to treat pathologies or disorders - they are for vision & purpose ! I take his point. But what both points of vie have in common is - they take psychedelics seriously as powerful things ! ...Carl Jung tried to tell us that Mental Health - & Meaning - cannot really be separated !...

Tranlated ‘the leña’ . See also ‘el leña’.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am YETI BOB:

you can also avoid the BS by brewing your own at home ... you can find everything you need if you look for it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am DJ Guin:

@nathan -- i have utilized said 'shrooms...but I was in a terrible mental space when I did. it resulted in a nightlong anxiety attack. plu, they're difficult to grow or obtain.
Avatar 9:22am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Handy Haversack:

Joe, the show is just pitch perfect already!
Avatar 9:23am Dano59:

I had a good friend who went into a "business venture" with an ayahuasca cult, got off the grid and disappeared, leaving personal debts and a lot of people behind. He was a true believer and was talking to me (pre-entry) about boundless opportunities for riches and life enrichment. I'm still sad for him and along with other friends I just want to hear from him.
Avatar 9:24am Dano59:

@Handy: Somebody get Anna Kendrick on the horn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Ryansterlingvirtue:

so dreamy. love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am DJ Guin:

@YETI - found a few sites. was not certain you could legally obtain it the US. thanks for the tip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am nathan:

@DJGuin yeah, my first few experiences with that and LSD weren't great either. it definitely takes a little practice and the right setting. but I suppose different drugs work for different people, and fwiw my friend had a very positive experience with his ayahuasca "shaman" -- it sounds like it wasn't too hokey and they mostly just goofed around making art and playing instruments (after the part where you throw up). Anyway, drug or not, I hope you find something that helps. The world's a depressing place right now!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am nathan:

@DJGuin same!! helped me so much in getting through quarantine. <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am OldGringo:

Interesting board this morning. I'm possibly a tad older, and my parents (mom still going at 92) were of the WW2 generation whose therapy consisted of "suck it up and move on". This was ultimately unhelpful for me, and I am just starting to dig out from under it. Better late than never., though- and WFMU ain't half bad at getting you out of your own head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am bigkafka:

@DJ Guin I'm similarly interested in therapeutic use of psychedelics. However, living here in Kentucky, I think I would have to do some traveling to find a clinical setting to try that out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Son Of Pantz:

Welcome fellow Kentuckian!
Avatar 9:37am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

DJ Guin: Sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience.
Set & Setting are of course considered the most fundamental considerations for psychedelic use: Set being your mindset & real feelings, for psychedelics are boundary dissolvers that will bring up or make apparent what is in the unconcscious
- & Setting where you are & expose yourself to, since psychedelics open wider the filter of your senses & the mind - for hours...
How this squares with improving your mood & outlook when they aren't great - I admit is a pressing question !...
Some say that it's the bad trips you learn from ! Just as psychoanalysis dredging up hard things can be useful - & just telling the therapist you're fine is wasting time...
Myself - I concluded that continuing to take LSD was like therapy - with no therapist ! & I stopped...
Mushrooms - psilocybin - I think is known for making people giggly - & I suspect this correlates to the current evidence in research...
Ayahuasca can refer to any number of concoctions, hopefully Traditional with some time-honored wisdom - but the main pwerful psychoactive is DMT. I have been in no hurry for a DMY experience ! But what is said by all is it is an extremely intense & altering visionary experience that takes you completely away to what is described as another dimension ! People speak of communing with the Others - machine elves, aliens, the ancestors... & - unlike LSD & the others - it ends fairly quickly !
What effect this may have on overall mental & emotional health - frankly I do wonder. & not just academically, but personally <3.
Sorry for the length here. Enuff.

How about Kratom for depression ? A depressed friend took it for pain then noticed it really improved his mood. I find it immediately puts me in a good mood.

@Yeti Hah! I mean, I live in Lexington, so I'm sure I can get whatever. But I'm specifically interested in trying this in a guided, clinical setting. If I eat 'shrooms on my own, I will surely listen to John Coltrane and have a nice time, but I'm skeptical of the long term therapeutic benefits. :)

I am super PO'd that WFMU's existence is even being questioned. I have the sneaking feeling that some real estate mogul has their eye on whatever plot of land the station is on. That whole area of Jersey City is one giant waterfront co-op at this point for the most part. Anything remotely resembling "public space" is actually private property complete with public access hours/etc.

A Message from Station Manager Ken --
