"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am YETI BOB:

Good morning Jazz Afficionados, JA, RevRab, Handy, Joe Mulligan --- Joe M, did you make it up to Sedona? How was it? Where you at now?

Also who’s this interview with?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am melinda:

greetings everyone
  9:56am Gerry from Miami:

JA, glad to see you play some Terje Rypdal. I saw him and his group play at a two-night festival of ECM jazz artists at UCLA's Royce Hall back in the late 70s. Also on the program was Gary Burton's band with Pat Metheny. All excellent stuff. Rypdal employed more foot pedals than anyone I had ever seen. Squeezed a wide variety of sounds ouf of his guitar. Not to nitpick, but his name is pronounced very close to English "Terry." The "j" is a weak-sounding "y."
9:58am Pete Half Living in London:

Morning all from the afternoon

Artisanal, bespoke JAZZ fanny packs! A bargain at twice the price!

Hey, YB. I managed to smash that new laptop yesterday. Must have broken the screen. It's blank. I had an old monitor around and HDMIed into it. So reset to [0] days since an accident at this work site.

The lump on my head from the fridge is starting to fade, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am joe mulligan:

Hi Yeti Bob! yes we stayed at an airbnb for two nights near the airport mesa and boondocked our campervan one night farther south on 89a. took your advice on working around the traffic and thanks again for the tip!
kept our activities to biking/hiking the trails and hitting up all the new age/crystal shops. one had a sound healing studio. on the way back to the PHX airport we visited ArcoSanti a commune from the 70s. was such a fun trip! where are you now Yeti Bob?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am YETI BOB:

Handy, I saw your comment yesterday but was busy cooking dinner and didn't respond. So sorry to hear that. If I were closer I'd try to help you replace the screen, or copy your data to a new machine, or something. I hope you have somebody local who can do that sort of thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Ken From Hyde Park:

I've been getting a good mash-up simulcasting the Drummer stream along with this morning's JA program. I tuned Meghan's show on the phone speaker and the phone is still playing.

nice vibes right now, John
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am YETI BOB:

Joe - I'm back in Sweet Home Chicago. I was out for a total of 19 days, longer than I had originally planned. Visiting Santa Fe and then driving East on Rt 56 through a lot of small towns in NM was the highlight. (Yes, 56 not 66. No other cars, no cops, a lot of wide-open road). On the last day I drove 780 miles in one day to get from Great Bend KS to Chi, it was a long day, a new record for me, but I made it home, just a little ragged. Mostly glad to be home but I'm fantasizing about retiring to NM now.
  10:05am headcleaner:

some kind of computer disaster, Handy? Whahabben?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Yes:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am YETI BOB:

Joe - also there's a ton of places I want to go back and visit, like ArcoSanti, LosAlamos, Lamy, etc. Couldn't do it all on one trip.
  10:06am headcleaner:

I'll look into the route 56 option when I make that trip, YB
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am YETI BOB:

The owner of the "Broken Arrow Motel" in Springer NM on Rt 56 was about the nicest guy I've ever met, and it was a nice, clean, inexpensive place to stay too. I promised him I'd tell my friends about it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am David (in London):

I saw Little Jimmy here in London in the 1990s. It was truly incredible - he had such a birdlike frame, but the whole bloody room filled with the sound of his voice. I've never seen anyone else do it in quite the same way.

TY DJ JA !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@David (in London): Some people just have "it." I saw Peter Brotzmann a few years ago and the sheer amount of volume (with no amplification) that came out of that horn was incredible. And this was in a fairly large auditorium.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Andrew_in_WI:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am David (in London):

Woods, copy that. You don't earn a nickname like 'Machine Gun' without having some serious firepower!
  11:11am Squid:

That Michael Hurley song brought tears to my eyes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

@David (in London): Truth. He also had amazing control, especially noticeable when playing softly. This was a dual show with Joe McPhee. What a night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am YETI BOB:

D(iL): Talk about firepower - I just got a copy of Natural Information Society's most recent LP, with Evan Parker - it was recorded at Cafe Oto in 2019 - I don't suppose you were at that show?? It's mind-blowing.
Avatar 11:13am Malcolm:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Mike W:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am David (in London):

Ah, Yeti Bob, hello! How are you my friend? No, sadly wasn't at that show. I tend to confine my Evan-watching to The Vortex (an old school venue not far from OTO, where he's been playing regularly since the 80s). He does a good show there almost every year on his birthday. I should give that album an ear then. Thanks for the steer.

Hi Malcolm.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am David (in London):

Malcolm, I'm from Stoke Newington. The Vortex was our local venue until fell onto the radar of a bastard, unscrupulous property developer who then cheated his way to its destruction. They moved it to Dalston some years back.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Mike W:

did i really get to see Brötzmann twice? Tonic was such a great place, in part because of how strenuously unique it was as a NYC venue during its run

i do remember Derek Bailey came to our New Year’s Eve party in the basement one year (he was involved in the live music festivities upstairs). he didn’t mean to, i don’t think; i helped him find a seat in a crowded room and brought him some water.

saw him in LA a few years ago with Jason Adasiewicz and others and it was so completely different. incredible group dynamic that was, i don't know, otherworldly in the way that the group was improvising together. like telepathically.
