So glad, Mx. Baba Bee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am WR:

Greetings Doug and drummers all.

Regarding the surfeit of recordings of South Carolina African American Christian music, rather than wonder why so many ensembles were there more to consider is why so many were recorded from there or labelled as being from there.

The first two selections from Spain, wow, never would have guessed as from Spain. Lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

Now THAT is a helluva entrance, WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Brian in UK:

This show has the same remit as the BBC when it began, to educate and inform. Think they missed the bit about the quality of the jokes. Only kidding!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Brian in UK:

Spain has had frequent invasions and is diverse politically. So maybe no surprises about the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Brian in UK:

The last invasion was British tourists in the Sixties.
Avatar 9:57am StringOFperils:

IBIZA. The last wave of Spanish world music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Some in Barcelona have considered the hordes who came in for and after the Olympics to be an invasion of sorts.
Avatar 9:57am PAULS:

Torremolinos! Torremolinos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Lewis:

a very sideways thought here (wrt the variety of Spanish music): I have occasion now and then to drive over the Gottard pass in Switzerland. About 2/3 of the way up there is a wierd little restaurant / rest area / souvenir stand. I usually stop for a coffee and maybe a brat. They are always playing what sounds like Marriachi music. Last time I was through, I asked what the music was: It is the local folk music. Next time I'm gonna get a CD...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am dutchtheo:

Cowbells avant la lettre from Lucia Vaquero. The first track of this set Caramelles de Nadal", remindinded me a bit of the Yip Yips, martians from sesame street, yup. Pails

I once spent an easter in Torremolinos. There were many cats on the streets, so I was happy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am WR:

Absolutely yes Brian in UK, and this Arab / North African tint of the selection now I can hear that. That first one hit me like north Asian temple music or the like.

Well gotta focus on work now. Will be listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am dutchtheo:

PAULS! that typo was unintended, (pails...:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am sinner:

I have to say, superb gospel set. And Amen on the Ocora observations. I read somewhere that until relatively recently there were no audio recording basics, classes or instructions included in the Ethnomusicological curriculum at Indiana U.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Jeff Golick:

Back inside, having successfully avoided a parking ticket this week. It's honestly sad how much pride I take in this.
Avatar 10:07am StringOFperils:

Well, sinner, you can't accuse the faculty of having Audacity.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am sinner:

Strangs: TISH! whoop-whoop!

Doug: Out On Life's Ocean is in my personal Top Five. That's Drink Small on gtr, btw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Doug Schulkind:

Probably not, considering Twardzik died in 1955 of a heroin overdose. He was 24 years old.
Avatar 10:10am PAULS:

Now I want some tzatziki
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

@sinner
No shit! THE Drink Small? Are you sure it's not a different Drink Small?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Irene Trudel:

Jeff Golick, that's a ritual with me too. Luckily Alternate Side Parking is only in effect once a week for me, and I did my hour-and-a-half car-sitting yesterday.
  10:11am Funky16Corners:

Twardzik was tragically underrecorded. A couple of things with Chet Baker, a few bootleg recordings and not much else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Phillippe:

Hey spodi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am WR:

@9:58 @Lewis, nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

@Irene Trudel and Jeff Golick
Wanna the know the alternate side of the street parking routine for me here in Pittsburgh? (Of course you do.) We have to move the car ONCE A MONTH. It's pathetic. What a bush-league town.
Avatar 10:13am PAULS:

AND you gotta put a chair out there to save your spot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Artie:

Let us not be distracted, but lest we forget, today we observe this May's Bandcamp Friday celebrations.
Avatar 10:13am bobdc:

I was just looking up the bass player on this, and while I never heard of him, it was interesting to see that Ray Barretto is on it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Irene Trudel:

@Doug, I am SO jealous! In NYC it's such a revenue-grabbing racket. Half the time I sit in the car and the street sweeper never comes.
Avatar 10:14am bobdc:

My problem with Herbie Mann is, having seen the "Push Push"album cover many years ago, I can never unsee it
Avatar 10:14am PAULS:

Pro tip, Artie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am sinner:

Doug @10.12 you mean you have to remove the bricks & put the wheels back on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Irene Trudel:

@bobdc, now I am seeing that Mann cover in my mind. Ick!
Avatar 10:15am Listener Gregory:

"Flute, Brass, Vibes, and Percussion" is a pretty lazy album title. The producer was not giving his or her all for this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
Helluva lineup on this Herbie Mann slice. The bass player is a fascinating story. Nabil Totah. Born in Palestine. Came to the US in '44. Played with Bird and others. Most importantly, he was bestowed with the nickname "Knobby."
Avatar 10:15am PAULS:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Little Danny:

I couldn't, Doug! When I see his name in the credits it always reads as some sort of contract-evading pseudonym. I want it to spell something backwards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am chresti:

Morning Doug and drummers!

Morning all. Back from the wilds of the grocery store.

chresti and LD are finally up. Last night did get a lil crazy. Great party, Danny!
Avatar 10:29am StringOFperils:

Loving this Stafford James/Enrico Rava thang. Wish I were in that room right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Brian in UK:

Jeff G, I do sympathise. Last week I stopped at the wet fish shop for five minutes and got a ticket. I was sorely vexed. Before anyone starts the warden put it in whiting.
Avatar 10:30am Listener Gregory:

The bass on this Stafford James is a bit too much for me. It would be more effective if it was dialed back a bit.
Avatar 10:30am PAULS:

Traffic jam!
Avatar 10:30am Listener Gregory:

@Brian in UK, you haddock say it, didn't you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am chresti:

Hi Brian in UK, I imagine so, don't really follow tennis, It has been busy at the courts though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Brian in UK:

This could be the soundtrack from a Sixties Czech cartoon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Artie:

@BrianInUK: And you just left floundering at the curb. Have they no sole!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

Geese Impregnation Operation: the missing Butthole Surfers album
Avatar 10:36am Listener Gregory:

Doug, there was a practice in 70s jazz records of over-amping basses, which could now actually be heard. However, it took a while for engineers to realize that just because you could didn't mean you should.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Brian in UK:

chresti, sorry I meant the courts. It is a funny game, people in this country never seem to follow it except for two weeks at Wimbledon when the country is glued to the TV.
  10:36am davefromtoronto:

i'm still unable to hear the appeal of this type of "music" - can anyone enlighten me?

Avatar 10:38am Listener Gregory:

@davefromToronto, let freedom ring!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

@davefromtoronto
You don't have to change anything if you don't want to. If you allow yourself to accept that "music" can be less narrowly defined, you may find a way to experiencing sounds like this that provide you with something meaningful. But only if you want to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Artie:

Most audio systems of the day may have had limited low frequency response, so maybe the engineers were just trying to boost that range up into audibility. Heard on a full range system today, it could sound a trifle much. But for me, I love hearing the bass player clearly. It's a real difference and a pleasure when listening on a good full-freq system.
  10:40am davefromtoronto:

i try to be open minded every week during this part of the show but it's a hard row to hoe...i'm trying though.
Avatar 10:40am StringOFperils:

I would LOVE to hear someone's dissertation on 'the appeal of this type of music'. I like listening to this, but could I tell you why? No. The psychology of acclimation to something intangible...hmmm.
Avatar 10:41am Listener Gregory:

@Artie, hearing the bass is great. When it's the loudest instrument, it's usually not that great, at least in a jazz context. I think things are much better now, as the pendulum is somewhere closer to the middle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Artie:

@LG: Balance in all things. Unless it's Funk, where I want all the Bump.
Avatar 10:43am Listener Gregory:

@davefromtoronto, I find that if I really don't hear anything in the music, it is worth it to focus on the drums. Because the drummer is often doing something fascinating even if everyone else is just squawking incomprehensibly. Not that I have anything against squawking!

  10:46am davefromtoronto:

thanks for the feedback. maybe you can compare it to other forms of avant garde art - not easy to digest but if you put some open minded time into it it may reveal something meaningful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Artie:

@sinner: I'd support a full tour of the Statehouses of the South (and points beyond).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Artie:

@davefromtoronto: I like to listen to this in a similar manner to how I listen to a storming sea. Just lean into the chaos, let yourself get in tune with it (as you can), and see where it takes you.

Brian in UK, all good, The courts get extra busy when there's a Tennis event happening there, and everywhere else, all over the globe.
Avatar 10:49am Listener Gregory:

@dave, to be honest, free jazz has overdone the shrieking saxes in my humble opinion. It was "freedom" in the 60s, but by the 90s, it was something you had already heard a hundred times. Contemporary improvisers are subtler and more interactive.

This Prince Nico Mbarga record was one of the very first African discs I ever bought. Fell immediately in love with it. I am still immediately in love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Brian in UK:

First five notes of Prince Nico were enough to know that it was a wriggler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

This track is quite possibly still the all-time best-selling African recording.
  10:56am davefromtoronto:

artie and gregory & doug- cheers!
Avatar 10:56am PAULS:

Three chords. Amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

From the Internets:

EMI had turned down the demo-tape of "Sweet Mother" in 1974, citing its childish appeal as reason. Prince Nico then headed for Decca, another recording giant, and was again rejected. In December of 1976, Rogers All Stars, a recording company in Anambra State, recorded the album.

In 1976, Prince Nico and his band, Rocafil Jazz, released the biggest African hit ever, the classic "Sweet Mother" .

The album soon became a national anthem, largely because of its emphasis of motherhood and its brilliant fusion of Cameroonian, Nigerian, and Zairean styles (highlife and Congo music).

"Sweet Mother" sold over 13 million copies, was sung in Pidgin English and by the end of the 1970's Prince Nico's influence was going international and reshaping the music of some Ghanaian and Caribbean bands.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

This track has "mother" in the title, but I can't swear it's thematically appropriate for Mother's Day. I'm taking a bit of a leap. Which I am happy to do because it's such a fucking gorgeous song.

Toodle-oo, PAULS!

How great is The Free Design?!? One of things I so much love about their music is that I listen with the full and complete knowledge that at an earlier point in my life I would have loathed their music. Learning to love it is like getting a new lease on life. Plus, the music is simply beautiful.
