Hello, all! Today's mystery LP-under-the-cassettes should be very easy to ID for some of you. Anyone?

No one recognizes today's mystery LP? Where have all the prog fans gone?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:11pm

Semulator, Dr Cmurtha, Danny, james, WR, Yvang, Rich. Greetings one and all.

Interview - GG?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
David (in London):

Is that Gentle Giant Tony?
Avatar 12:13pm
Tony Coulter:

Danko!!! Hiya!!
  12:13pm
Mark Williams:

A cassette from Norn Iron (N. Ireland). Think that's a first for me. Hey Tony and everyone.
Avatar 12:13pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Danko and David: It is indeed Gentle Giant
Avatar 12:14pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mark! It's a first for Tape Hiss too, I believe.
  12:15pm
Danko:

Tony, this MMGK sounds very interesting. What do you know about them? I can't find anything about them on discogs. Maybe I haven't tried hard enough.
Avatar 12:16pm
Tony Coulter:

So, today's mystery LP is Gentle Giant's "Interview": www.discogs.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
David (in London):

And I really like that hand-drawn FOMT logo and address details.
Avatar 12:18pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Danko: Truthfully, I know nothing about MMGK except that they were from Reston, Virginia. As you say, there's no info about them online. The band members' names aren't listed on the cassette either.
  12:19pm
Mark Williams:

Reston, VA? That's basically a suburb of DC/Northern Virginia. Let me ask around. Must someone know about them.
Avatar 12:20pm
Tony Coulter:

The names of the guest musicians *are" mentioned, but they're all obvious pseudonyms.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
David (in London):

MMGK and '4-headed' perhaps suggests initials of band members? Just spit-balling there, though.
  12:22pm
Danko:

Possible connection - there is a certain Mr. Mitchell Kato, who runs a company named MMGK, lives in Reston, VA.

Avatar 12:23pm
Tony Coulter:

@ David: That's definitely a good guess. Morty, Manny, George, & Kenny....
Avatar 12:24pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Danko: Wow -- that really could be a lead. Thanks! Will investigate post-show.
  12:24pm
Mark Williams:

he definitely looks like the guilty party. Philosophy major. Case closed.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Stanley:

Tapey Tony, how's it going?
Avatar 12:27pm
Tony Coulter:

Squishy Stanley! Hiya! It's going ... somewhere....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
Stanley:

Somewhere interesting, it seems.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:31pm
David (in London):

(Late) afternoon Stanley. How was your walk?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
Stanley:

Hi David. Bracing, you could say. Rained the rest of the day so stayed taking it easy. Just come out of the Suzi Quatro doc. Well worth a viewing. Have you been at the digital coalface today?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm
David (in London):

On the assumption that MMGK didn't have access to oodles of free studio time, I'm impressed by the quality of their recording. I digitised one of my old band demos from 1987 a couple of years ago, and the quality was appalling. It sounded like it was playing through an old woollen sock.

Stanley, yep, slaving away. The weather here hasn't been anything to write home about either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Little Fyodor:

Digging the MMGK, *especially* the opening piece!!
Avatar 12:40pm
Tony Coulter:

@ David: Well, it could be from the early '90s, by which time home-recording equipment had improved. I'm pretty certain it couldn't be any more recent than that.
Avatar 12:40pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Fyodor!!!
Avatar 12:41pm
Tony Coulter:

The opening piece kinda reminds me of DDAA
Avatar 12:41pm
Tony Coulter:

(unlike the rest of the tape)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
WR:

To my ears this is a most bizarre Ian Curtis Joy Division inflected tune.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
David (in London):

I'm Tascam 244 Portastudio 4-track all the way, Tony.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
WR:

To clarify, I was referring to Star Vicinity, where it clicked for me, but hearing the Ian Curtis like vocal on subsequent tunes as well. Since I am working I don't know if I just didn't notice it earlier or what.
Avatar 12:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, I can hear it with Star Vicinity....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
WR:

Yes, not so pronounced on the others, but popped out at me on that one tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
Little Fyodor:

I will take your eyeballs out??? Gotta love the aesthetic less traveled!!
Avatar 1:03pm
Tony Coulter:

Little known fact: That line was going to be in "All You Need Is Love," but at the last minute the Beatles cut it.
Avatar 🥁 1:07pm
Nick S.:

Hey, Tony! I'm late. Call me a taxi.
Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Nick!
Avatar 1:08pm
Tony Coulter:

I'm going to start a taxi service called Unter.
Avatar 1:09pm
Tony Coulter:

For the Untermensch.
Avatar 🥁 1:09pm
Nick S.:

Staff it with women only and I'll send my kids on it.
Avatar 🥁 1:11pm
Nick S.:

Description of your service sounds just like Uber.
Avatar 1:12pm
Tony Coulter:

Yes, but their service is for the Ubermensch.
  1:13pm
Mark Williams:

What about for the handful of Urmenschen? I'm thinking of applying for this status.
Avatar 1:14pm
TDK60:

Hi Tony, what's hissin'? | I knew an unknown newwavepunk band in early '80s called Übermensch. It was a joke as members were people of color.
Avatar 1:14pm
Tony Coulter:

The cassette on now is the one on the lower right in the pic, with naked woman and tombstone.
Avatar 🥁 1:16pm
Nick S.:

I've definitely been taking the wrong taxi.
Avatar 1:17pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, hey, TDK60!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
David (in London):

Hey TDK.
Avatar 1:43pm
TDK60:

Hello David. Been doing chores around the cassette castle.
Avatar 1:45pm
Tony Coulter:

A lot of the clips on this cassette are taken from movies (as well as records, obviously), but it would be interesting to reverse the process and make a movie based on this cassette, using all the dialogue.
  1:50pm
headcleaner:

fine program today, tony - had a lousy morning, and am finally feeling my head coming together again
Avatar 1:51pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks, headcleaner! (Sorry to hear about the lousy morning.)
  2:00pm
Mark Williams:

I like your idea, Tony. Or maybe a play.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:17pm
Yvang:

Interesting as the song started like the previous cassette to slowly transition to something melodic...but is this still the same song now?
Avatar 2:18pm
Tony Coulter:

It is! There are just two side-length tracks.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:19pm
Yvang:

Oh I see... it's like a longer "cassingle".
Avatar 2:21pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, the sides are only around 15 minutes each. So, a cassette EP, maybe.
  2:30pm
Mark Williams:

i'm liking this one quite a bit.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:31pm
David (in London):

Yes, me too.
Avatar 2:32pm
Tony Coulter:

They ate their spinach.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:34pm

Avatar 2:35pm
Tony Coulter:

Ha!
Avatar 2:37pm
Tony Coulter:

"I yam what I yam." Reminds me of something I still find funny even after living where I am for almost 12 years. The street two streets over from me is called Yamhill.
Avatar 2:37pm
Tony Coulter:

I just can't help picturing a hill of yams.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:40pm
David (in London):

Watch out for the feared Yamhill Gang, Tony...
Avatar 2:41pm
Tony Coulter:

I will! Wouldn't want to be pelted with yams.

Christ, the Reverend Ian Paisley. There's a voice I haven't heard in a long, wee while.

"Disillusioned when no-one actually GAVE UP ART after the Neoist Art Strike of 1990-93, dj@fomt, a broken man, retreated to a hermetic existence in the bleak Irish hinterland." Ha ha.

Sounds wild!

Wow, were you guys talking about slamming yams over here too?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:56pm

Great show today Tony, thanks.
