A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

I believe it's actually a surface to deter people from camping or sleeping under a bridge. Nice, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm Rich in Washington:

I think there's an appropriate Anatole France quote to go with that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Franco Twinkie:

Nick Cave in his read shirt with his pitch black hair whipping this face under the crumbling beauty of a faded ballroom in Berlin makes me want...want...PIZZA!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Rich in Washington:

Me too! I bought it because of the Ed Roth cover. I'd only read about Birthday Party in magazines.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

In my dreams, Nick Cave does an album of Daniel Johnston covers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Franco Twinkie:

I love this version. It's so beautiful and kind.
Avatar 8:22pm Mr Fab:

Hey Rich, and rich n famous listeners. "Mutiny In Heaven" absolutely took my head off. But i did not hate his transition to the more low key sounds with the Bad Seeds, like I did when other punks "matured." Nope, thems was some good Seeds indeed..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm ultradamno:

Mine was Prayers On Fire, through Subterranean's catalogue (and encouraged by some Release The Bats Tesco Vee review in Touch & Go)
Avatar 8:23pm ironybread:

My first Nick Cave moment was "Red Right Hand" from the X-Files soundtrack. First Nick Cave purchases were the two Grinderman albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Rich in Washington:

Hey Mr. Fab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Rich in Washington:

I became a huge Nick & Bad Seeds fan. Esp. after seeing them on Night Music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Franco Twinkie:

I have tears in my eyes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm ultradamno:

Really more of a Rowland partisan, though.
Avatar 8:25pm Mod Mokka Matti:

Murder Ballads is a great album all around, in my opinion (of admittedly insignificant value). Still have my CD I got way back in the day - Senior Year at Uni. Yikes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

gender neutral pronouns, please!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm chresti:

I love Red Right Hand.
Avatar 8:28pm Constance De Witt:

Wow, I listened to these albums so much back in he day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Rich in Washington:

My sincere apologies, Mx. Baba Bee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Franco Twinkie:

My favorite Nick Cave song is Blue Bird which I don't even have, but still. I think I'll google it before I go get us a pizza.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm ultradamno:

I like From Her and Let Love In
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

It's alright, Rich, we all make mistakes! I sure do! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

Franco, what kinda pizza?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm ultradamno:

Dig Lazarus isn't bad despite no Harvey, I think Adamson came back around that time, another common denominator of his best work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm ultradamno:

He was definitely on the Cave ACL ep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

ok, hopefully this will help confuse people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

Then I saw "Wings of Desire" and the Nick Cave scenes blew my mind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm ultradamno:

Crime & The City Solution too! I'm not even sure the Howards/Harvey period is the band's best material, but great footage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm ultradamno:

Gotta love Canadian mummies.
Avatar 8:43pm ironybread:

"The name comes from a killer butler encountered by Laurel and Hardy in their first film 'Do Detectives Think?' in 1927" - Discogs. Yow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Rich in Washington:

I got into Nash because he was sort of Residents adjacent. Plus, like the Rez, he became a character in Matt Howarth's wonderful comic books.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

ooh, I haven't seen the comics!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm ultradamno:

I remember Ralph teasing a Nash The Slash album, but did it ever happen?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm ultradamno:

Plus he gets name checked in Eggs On Plate, that was an encouragement to look into him for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm coelacanth∅:

'evening Rich, 'lungers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

hey, there, coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Rich in Washington:

I do know they put out at least one single and Nash appears on at least one of the Buy or Die 7" comps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

When's the last time anyone saw fleep?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm ultradamno:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Rich in Washington:

good question, Mx. Baba.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

WFMU is my only social media. I get attached to all you characters
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm coelacanth∅:

hey Mx BB!

haven't seen fleep in ages
haven't seen Dean in a month or so also
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

I snooped, and it's been nearly a year since fleep clicky starred, but only a week since posting a pithy tweet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm coelacanth∅:

i hope fleep was wearing a pith helmet for that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm chresti:

Oh yeah, I was wondering about fleep. Also Geezerette.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm coelacanth∅:

...some don't hit the stars very much anyway... but i think it must be 1/2 a year since a fleep sighting. more than that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm coelacanth∅:

geezerette did seem to be engaging less and less
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm chresti:

I think I saw fleep surface last year, not long after the lockdown.
Avatar 8:55pm ironybread:

All reasonable people agree the Melvins are a foce for good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm coelacanth∅:

...so who's the pretty lady?
<

and FLIPVINS!
Avatar 8:56pm solo mon:

A force full Melvin ouch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Rich in Washington:

Melvins are doing a live online show thing, tomorrow, I think. I watched their Valentine's Day one and it was pretty entertaining.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Rich in Washington:

Oh, geezerette! I haven't seen geezerette forever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm chresti:

Fleep was almost always around on Blumin's show.
Avatar 9:00pm Mod Mokka Matti:

I was temporarily a man with a very Red (Left) Hand, when I gave myself a 2nd degree burn while pouring myself a big plastic tumbler of coffee, and the lid of my coffee maker's carafe decided to spontaneously detach, thus dumping boiling java on my digits. Coincidentally, this occurred on the same day marking the anniversary of the original release of "Red Right Hand", which I was reminded of in my Instagram feed that day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm ultradamno:

Y'all made me look up Linda Lee, it's been a minute
Avatar 9:01pm ironybread:

Seriously tho, why would anyone come to dislike the Melvins? Did they go commercial / go lounge / endorse Bush / other?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Rich in Washington:

Oh god. I've had that happen. The coffee explosion thing. My thermos=like device is prone to sudden eruptions of hot black coffee. I ended up pouring a generous amount of just pressed coffee onto my leg and got a nasty blister.
Avatar 9:02pm Mod Mokka Matti:

Just catching up on comments whilst I am supposed to be working. I've been wondering what's become of Fleep, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Rich in Washington:

I see Linda Lee occasionally. Not super often. I think sometimes it's nice to just listen and take a break from typing/reading.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm ultradamno:

Change their name to Mlvyns? That'd do it for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm coelacanth∅:

chresti, maybe the hideous reality of Blumen not being on wfmu made fleep give up on the station.
it almost did i. - since i got the impression it was not his choice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

we must summon the fleep, our lord and mentor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm coelacanth∅:

Linda Lee posted a few weeks (?) ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

fleep! leaping and splashing into our realm. fleep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm chresti:

LL was in TEX, last I knew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm coelacanth∅:

okay so fleep's been on twitter. someone who twits can tell him we're looking for him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm chresti:

coel, it was NOT Blumin's choice, I was so upset!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm chresti:

twit won't let me twit for some reason.
Avatar 9:08pm Mod Mokka Matti:

This past year has been so screwy, I have to admit that I didn't really realize that Daniel was gone...just thought he got shifted to another day/time that I wasn't able to tune in to the stream. Used to listen to him fairly regularly, myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm ultradamno:

Blumen was pretty openly dismayed in his farewell ep, I was not happy either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm coelacanth∅:

well, the mismanagement has been steering the station toward mainstream-friendly for several years now...until if it weren't for the alternate streams i wouldn't donate at all. (despite Bryce and Fabio and a few other stellar lights - which he'll probably bump soon too)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm chresti:

Daniel was the one that originally summoned me to the comments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

I pretty much lurk in Sheena's Jungle Room with occasional shimmies into GTDR. I do listen to Bryce and Trouble and Shrunken Planet archives a lot. Even Double-Dip moved to Sheena's, which is like Cookie Mueller being your babysitter!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Rich in Washington:

the schedule change giveth and the schedule change taketh away. I find it sad when a show I've really come to love gets taken off but I also love the new shows. It's bittersweet.
Avatar 9:14pm Cp304:

guud evening great peoples
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm chresti:

They found(and were dismayed) on the survey that a large portion of respondents were over 40 something. Maybe they're afraid we'll die off and want to lure younger blood?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Rich in Washington:

Hey, Cp304!
Avatar 9:17pm Cp304:

ello Rich, i got it cranked.. gotta throw a load in do some stuff while listening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm coelacanth∅:

it's been consistently more bitter than sweet for 5-10 years now.
...my opinion is that the station manager who, obviously- having a degree in business - is going to be primarily concerned with finances and constant "growth" as a business, should not be the same person as the program director.
someone who wants to stay true to the station's original ideals when it became freeform should be program director; and the station manager should make THAT work ...just as he did when he first took over, and basically saved the station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm ultradamno:

We commenters certainly veer older, probably because the message board format is more familiar to us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Rich in Washington:

I am glad we're on our own weird little archipelagos on the alt/streams and not subject to that kind of thing (knocks on simulated woodgrain veneer).
Avatar 9:20pm Cp304:

lol ultradamno..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm chresti:

I suspect the elder listeners make up a large percentage of support as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm coelacanth∅:

i don't know chresti. it seems to me the programming caters to mostly older folks...folks who very often can be swayed toward accepting crap they once hated because there's nostalgia or familiarity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Rich in Washington:

I love it when I later love something I hated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm coelacanth∅:

i started listening to wfmu when i was 16, and it was a lot weirder then!
there must be plenty of others like me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/em):

by the way, this Sonic Youth is hitting the spot. What spot, I cannot say, but it's hitting it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Rich in Washington:

I'm glad. It's having a similar effect on me as well. I just randomly grabbed this a few moments before playing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

yes, I probably would have hated this Sonic Youth when it came out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm chresti:

Fingers crossed come June schedule...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm ultradamno:

I remember getting the catalogs way back when and listening on and off as the internet became an option from the 90s or whatever on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm ultradamno:

I suggest a K-Pop show called Oh, My Seoul to bring in the kids, but no one listens
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Rich in Washington:

I found these series of Sonic Youth albums really impenetrable. Sort of off-putting in their relentless noisiness but now I really enjoy them. A big F U to their former labels, with the ability to go into their own studio and just experiment with like minded folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm coelacanth∅:

Rich (@921) i do too, but sometimes i ask myself am i just humming along because i was inundated with it when i didn't know how much better it can be?
most disco songs are a good example. they're not any less vacuous than they were then, yet people who hated it then are ready to shake their collective booty now.
sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm chresti:

Everything old is new to me in a lot of cases. Like the Melvins, or E Neubaten, for instance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

coelacanth∅: hee hee! I was just writing in my notebook about how much I loved disco when I was younger, but I was too young to go to the disco!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm coelacanth∅:

i hated most "metal" as a teenager, but having friends in metal bands and trying to turn me on to this and that has opened me up.
sometimes, though, it hits me squar between my eyes that i'm hearing juvenile poseur crap.
there's good metal, and then there's most metal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm coelacanth∅:

hmm, sorry BB! maybe it's an age thing?
maybe if disco had come along 10 years sooner i would've liked it. i never liked Michael Jackson either!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Rich in Washington:

I disliked Melvins when they first came around as I lumped them in with the same rather dull bands I remember coming down from Seattle at the time, maybe because of them being associated with Nirvana, as I always regarded as kind of overrated.
Avatar 9:33pm Mod Mokka Matti:

I have to credit Clarissa Explains it All for first making me aware of WFMU's existence, but it would be another couple decades-plus before I started tuning in online, being out here in the PNW and all, and still listening heavily to local KEXP at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Rich in Washington:

I have really warmed to Jackson's Off The Wall over the years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm ultradamno:

Funny thing about metal is how it seems to have become the pathway to noise from the 90s on (where previously it was metal/hard rock to punk/postpunk to noise...they've cut out the middlemen)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm coelacanth∅:

well...it's not like i don't know i have many unpopular opinions in wfmuland!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm ultradamno:

Well, does explain everything, so that tracks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm ultradamno:

...she does, that is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Rich in Washington:

Are you in Seattle, MMM? or thereabouts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

coelacanth∅: oh I get it, disco is usually pretty vacuous. But as a ten year old listening to Donna Summer's greatest hits and watching Thank God It's Friday over and over, it was a lovely fantasy world to escape into! Better than the logging towns I grew up in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

I listen back to the new wave I slurped up in the 80s and think UGH, THAT"S VACUOUS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

ultra d right... by 10th grade there was a treacherous gulf between myself and a boy who was my best friend from ~5th-7th grade... i went punk, he went metal. i considered instrumental proficiency a waste of time if there wasn't feeling in it.
Avatar 9:45pm ironybread:

Oh wow, this Dodge record might be a sample source for Firesign's "Dear Friends" - gotta look up this puppy
Avatar 9:46pm Mod Mokka Matti:

@Rich: I'm roughly equidistant from Seattle and Grit City (aka Tacoma, to those not familiar with the nickname - and my birthplace, btw).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm coelacanth∅:

BB (your new moniker is taking some getting used to!,,,i hope you don't mind "BB") i wrote a song back then about disco, the basic idea being that it was just about dancing and fucking and snorting -when there was so much to address in this world... but i did ultimately come around to there being an importance to escape.
it wasn't the music, necessarily, and wasn't the lyrics, *necessarily*... as there was some vital disco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Rich in Washington:

oh, cool, ironybread!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm coelacanth∅:

- i mean, the ramones was just silly escape music, as was the grateful dead...

I'm sorry I was late and missed out on the convo.. I find it amazing all the things I missed as a yute that I have somehow come across on the nets.. like a collective mind has steered me.. I had no idea of WFMU if it weren't for Mr Fab making a blogpost.. how I found him, I can't remember.. probably deep linked from some mash site, but so much good here it's mindblowing..I'm just thankful.. too much to archive.. I've met so many interesting peoples..

the film's a huge waste of celluloid, only of interest of early Mothers fans. Preston has many funny moments in it. But it's just a wreck of crudely edited footage by Zappa, who's no filmmaker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm ultradamno:

And not much of a Saturday Night Live host, famously.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Franco Twinkie:

I just walked in with the pizza to be greeted by this! I use to see Don when he had a regular gig at this bar in Pasadena. It was kind of a pick-up joint that wasn't my type of place, but I would sit at the bar and listen to Don play the grand piano. He would always do a medley of old MOI material. We would exchange knowing glances. It made me very happy, and I would walk home drunk and alone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Scott67:

Don Preston as Bif Debris - he would drink a vile, foamy liquid and turn into a monster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Rich in Washington:

I love that part - and Jimmy Carl Black would be credited on a subsequent album with Drums and Poverty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Franco Twinkie:

This is good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Rich in Washington:

I used to have lots of this dialog on a cassette tape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Rich in Washington:

anybody catch Tom Wilson's Music Factory when Irwin ran it on his show a couple of years ago? it was amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Franco Twinkie:

In the mid 1970's Don was in a band called Ogo Moto. I saw them play at The La Brea tar pits. Most of the people walking to the art museum would look at them with the 'huh?' look on their faces. The band didn't even notice or care, they just played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Franco Twinkie:

Like I said, this is so good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Rich in Washington:

Don contributed to a cool album I bought out of a cutout bin as a kid, called Music from the 21st Century. I should dig it up.

Burroughs was a lot of things, including a forecaster of doom.

I found Junky in my public library and then read Naked Lunch and my brain melted. I still like to randomly pick up the later and read passages from it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Rich in Washington:

I was stuck for a show title today and picked up Nova Express and flipped to a random page.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Rich in Washington:

but late night DJs in my town used to frequently play Burroughs stuff and that really hooked me.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm Franco Twinkie:

Daz Darkside had a series of polls pitting the Slates songs against each other, the final tally was

Leave The Capitol 34
Prole Art Threat 22
Middle Mass 21
Fit and Working Again 20
Slates, Slags, Etc 20
An Older Lover 19
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Rich in Washington:

I reckon being of partial German ancestry, and all those years of studying the language from Jr. High through Uni served at least one purpose, after all... being able to authentically pronounce somewhat obscure/alt band names of Teutonic origins.
