The new wannabe-scary Sabrina on Netflix doesn’t have enough Salem, because what’s-her-name from Mad Men is supposedly monstrously allergic to cats, and they use a real cat. So he’s rarely if ever in the same shot with her. Lots of great actors wasted on mediocre writing in that show.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm ヱkョ:

@Avril, I’m not necessarily opposed to any “reboot” but yeah a lot of them are freakin’ terrible. At best they should take something that was originally terrible and improve on it, like Lost in Space. The Netflix remake is nothing all that great but it’s certainly better than the original. Plus Parker Posey gets to chew massive amounts of Vancouver scenery with aplomb as Dr. Smith. She is awesome.

  12:55pm Rick A:

Columbo without Peter Falk is like a lake without water. Therefore, no on a Columbo reboot. Falk so inhabited that role, that no actor can come close. Steve Martin was bad enough trying to be Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther.
Avatar 12:56pm Roberto:

Agreed about Falk.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm JohnEBGood:

  12:57pm Rick A:

The use of "reboot" to represent a new version of a movie or television series shows how much technology rhetoric dominates our lives.

Der Himmel über Berlin => Wim Wenders - Peter Falk's appearance in Wings of Desire was stunning....

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Krys O.:

Peter Falk was terrific in everything he did.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Dayffid:

I agree regarding Falk. The only way it could work would be if there was another actor who could put in as much of themselves into the role as Falk did. But then its not Columbo.

Krys O, sadly American versions of British television tends to be at best a pale imitation. The American version of Life on Mars--with Harvey Keitel, even--was abysmal. I watched three episodes and couldn't continue. The British version is really great.

Avatar 1:11pm Avrilinmay:

@ヱkョ: yes of course. It was more my issue than yours, this aversion towards doing old shows again (and again). I do not know about "Lost in Space" (I lack a lot of SF knowledge, mostly not by choice) although Parker Posey makes everything interesting, so I can totally understand. But I'm afraid following how the sausage is made tv shows-wise (and all the "content" direction other media formats took) made me regret to no end investing a lot of my youthful years following tv. or maybe (I actually am certain it is) it's a blessing. I'd rather think about all the actual art present in the world to enjoy.

Another great Colin song!
  1:56pm Andres:

Hey, LD! I expect the trailer on the Flame-O-Vision tonight :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Krys O.:

Colin Moulding on Ten Feet Tall: Colin: “Now and again one should be able to throw a spanner in the works for a bit of devilment. This song was my spanner in 1979.

“I suppose it was my reaction to the ‘Quirk, Jerk, Spiky, Crikey, Start, Stop’ of our previous form. Back then, we had a particular aversion to anything that sounded remotely ‘west coast’ and cries for me to do this song as a solo record came from some quarters. Now of course, having tried every style under the sun, all of us can listen to it now and wonder what all the fuss was about.

“I was contacted at the time by the representatives of the Italian film director Michaelangelo Antonioni, who wanted to use the song in his forthcoming film. Whether it got there or not, I never found out. It will probably turn up on the late night BBC2 spot reserved for foreign films, for people to discover when they come back from the pub a bit blurry eyed.”

Andy: “Why did we stop there? I just can't remember. Well, here we are, up to our skinny ties recording the Drums And Wires album, and just being a tad daring by working in an acoustic powered song, courtesy of our Colin Ivor. This is one of the nicest quality recording we've done, but we did have the genius fingers of Hugh Padgham flitting across the faders. Virgin asked us to record an electric version for U.S. single release. Which we did. But it never had the bittersweet charm of this one.”

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm ヱkョ:

@Krys, not surprising. Especially for teenage boys like me when I first saw it on VHS.

My spouse is unable to enjoy XTC because his girlfriend left him for another KFJC DJ who played them a lot. He's missing out.
Avatar 2:08pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Went through a nice XTC phase 20-ish years back. For some reason it didn't stick. Sold it all but kept th'Dukes of Stratosphear because, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Krys O.:

In a similar vein to Joy Division, was looking forward to seeing XTC live in the States until Andy had a breakdown. Turns out his ex-wife didn't like his pill addiction and she flushed them down the drain leaving him to go cold turkey freak out.
Avatar 2:14pm Pseu Braun:

That's all in the XTC doc. Which shows Partridge for what a controlling prick he is.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Hughie Considine:

@earthwalker, the Dead meant the world to me for about five years of my life. First concert was Englishtown, 1977. Everybody should experience a live show in the company of 100,000+ people once in their life.
