Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm KimSorise:

Louisville is a hot bed of 60% capacity Derby festivities and protest actions!

WR- we have a short week because tomorrow is Oaks Day (the day before derby when the fillies run) and give all the kids the day off so their parents and teachers can gamble and party without regret of missing the carpool line.
We can't even get gender equality in horse racing - jeez.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm David Dichelle:

Hey Alex, yes they adopted that sound but are from the Golan Heights, in fact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm KimSorise:

this Spaccanapoli is awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm David Dichelle:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm KimSorise:

right on!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm WR:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm KimSorise:

But to answer your question direct WR - it's lunch time and yes, the hangover remedy is kids go back to school on Monday.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Handy Haversack:

Wow, KimSorise I had no idea that *Oaks Day* was such a holiday! Schools closed! Amazing.

We used to go to Belmont every year on Kentucky Derby Day and on my birthday. Good memories of it, but I eventually decided I couldn't do it anymore. But my dad was a handicapper, and I miss it every summer.

We once drove to Louisville from Atlanta, my dad intending to stay a week (or more if he got really hot) and make us enough money to get by for a year or so. But the only Racing Form he could get in ATL did not cover Churchill, and when we got there and asked about shuttles to the track at the motel, we learned the meet would not start for three months. You could see his heart kind of break. We had a nice lunch, got back in the car, and drove back home. Three months later, we didn't have enough money to drive back.

But I did taste shrimp for the first time!
Avatar 🚂 12:19pm βrian:

Our little human went back to school two weeks ago. She promptly brought home a cold that veritably slew us all.

So I got to celebrate my "fully vaxxed" day in bed.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:20pm WR:

Quite a story Handy. Memorable in fact. Too bad for your dad.
  12:21pm Marie:

I'm going to guess Istanbul, for no particular reason
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm KimSorise:

What an amazing set of memories, @Handy!
Your dad must have been one hell of a handicapper, for sure.
In a normal year and locally, Derby is 2 solid weeks of parties, concerts and events. It's a serious $ maker for the river city.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Dr.Cmurtha:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi David - ready for the Roud-y fish! I should make some for lunch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...could you repeat that ??
...I'm hard of herring...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Handy Haversack:

Not long after, a track opened in Birmingham that we would go to on Saturdays, but he always said his system needed better horses, and that track had very cheap horses indeed. Still, there were a few big days and celebrations, and it was time together. That track changed to dog racing after a few years, though, and that was it for his gambling.

He had worked as a hot walker at Belmont in the fifties and loved everything about horse racing, which I still really feel, but I just can't support the industry anymore, I decided. Lifetime positive at Belmont, though!

DiL: Kippers for breakfast again, Aunt Helga? Is it St. Swithen's day already?
Avatar 🚂 12:24pm βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm David Dichelle:

Hello Henry and Dr. Cmurtha! Are congratulations in order?
  12:24pm Marie:

Yes, Handy, interesting story. Reminds me of Peter OToole's autobiography, vol. 1, where he talks about him and his dad betting on horses (and maybe dog races too).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm KimSorise:

@Handy - It really is a tough industry to get behind ethically and politically, for sure.
I struggle with it for sure. I enjoy that I can make an extra month worth of wages in a weekend, but not all the noise and debauchery that comes with it. Hunter Thompson was certain correct in labeling the Derby "Decadent and Depraved"

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Phillippe:

My favorite war story from New Mexico happened about 30 years ago. I was working on a contract in El Paso and a good buddy of mine was working a job up in the northern part of New Mexico. We decided to meet in Truth or Consequences NM for dinner one Saturday since it was kind of in the middle and had a great name. We meet up in the middle of town and my buddy Hal announces he can detect the most authentic Mexican restaurant by just walking down the street and smelling the aromas coming out of the kitchen vent fans. One of them gets his seal of approval, and we go in and enjoy our authentic Mexican meal. When we were done, Hal asked the waiter if he could meet the chef to give our compliments. The waiter agrees and a couple minutes later a rotund 60-ish blonde woman with a thick German accent came out and introduced herself as the chef. Turns out she married some Army guy when he was stationed in Kaiserslautern and came with him to Fort Bliss in El Paso. When he retired they moved to TorC and opened a restaurant. German food kind of flopped there so she shifted to Mexican food and years later Hal lost all his credibility

Great story, @Phillippe
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Handy Haversack:

Oh, Hal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm David Dichelle:

Phillippe - Truth or Consequences makes sense as the title of the story.
  12:53pm headcleaner:

no loss of credibility there at all, @Phillippe - one doesn't have to be from a certain country or region to produce authentic cuisine from there (as attested by the many "ethnic" restaurants in NYC that put out barely edible fast-food quality crap for us to eat, even if sometimes very expensive and fancily named).
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Phillippe:

Ha David, I did not realize the irony! Good catch!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Phillippe:

truth to that, headcleaner.
Avatar 🚂 12:55pm βrian:

Judging by Mexican music and beer, I'd say there's a strong connection with German culture.
  12:55pm cinephile yeti bob:

There's an excellent recent documentary about Truth or Consequences NM and its bizarre spaceport - highly recommended
  12:56pm headcleaner:

and sometimes we find truly excellent restaurants run by people with background very incongruous to the food they're serving... on a trip to Milan a few years back (which is full of mediocre Italian restaurants btw) I stumbled across this Korean-run place that was basically the "it" restaurant of the neighborhood (always packed, nothing fancy, just down-to-business awesome Italian food)

For three hours, 7-10pm (ET), I will be playing one track from each program aired on the stream during the past week. I have already selected the track from today's episode of Continental Subway. Tune in later and find out which one!

The party will be here: wfmu.org...

James A. Beard in his excellent recipe-filled memoir Delights and Predjudices writes about the master chef Let employed by his mother in her fancy French restaurant in Portland OR in the 1890s, who was Chinese.

Give the best of Drummer Stream!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm David Dichelle:

Hey Doug, what a fantastic idea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm David Dichelle:

And hello Will in Norman!
  1:18pm Marie:

Hey, I'd like to change my dumb guess from the city (!) of Istanbul, to the country (!) of Turkey @)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Doug Schulkind:

I can guarantee you won't be smörgås bored!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Webhamster Henry:

Doug's Drummer Stream Tasting Palette. I'm assuming you are not choosing the 17 minute Polish prog piece that Gary played last night on Bodega Pop.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm chresti:

Hey Doug, wouldn't you need more than one track from each program this past week to fill 3 hours?!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Doug Schulkind:

@chresti
Somehow I've done it. The one show I won't fit in is Kenzo's. He does those insanely wonderful collages. Not sure how to incorporate that.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:20pm chresti:

Let's see... Paraguay, again.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Handy Haversack:

Fun, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm David Dichelle:

Marie: Largest city counts too!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Webhamster Henry:

@doug just have one of Kenzo's loops as bed music. Throw in some Alan Watts.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Yvang:

Kenzo could make the bed music.
Avatar 🚂 1:22pm Bas NL:

Quick bike ride home for me! I case of a flat... Uruguay's my guess!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Doug Schulkind:

Gotta go run do some work stuff. Back in a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm David Dichelle:

See you later, Doug and Bas!
Avatar 🚂 1:24pm TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm David Dichelle:

  1:30pm Marie:

@WH--I'm gonna add it to my list--thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...amps just too much louder than the stereo...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm David (in London):

Our local ice cream van plays La cucaracha as it's jingle, so that tune gets stuck in my head regularly.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Handy Haversack:

I wonder if that Lila Downs track might have inspired Troy and Abed's rap on Community ... I can see Donald Glover knowing it.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Michael 98145:

Lila Downs is doubleplus great live
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Stanley:

David - your neighbourhood is so hip. We have 'Eidelweiss'.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Carmichael:

Our ice cream van plays either Turkey in the Straw or The Entertainer. 2 boring songs.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Webhamster Henry:

We get Redwing on our ice cream trucks.
  1:38pm Marie:

Doug!!!!!!!!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:39pm spodiodi:

hi David and fellow passenger-listeners!
that was some cockroach
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:39pm David (in London):

Stanley, I suggested he try Whitehouse's 'I'm coming up your ***' but it just seemed to scare the children away strangely.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:40pm chris in the redwoods:

we don't have ice cream trucks driving in our neighborhood, but now i want ice cream. dammit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm David Dichelle:

Hey Spodi!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Stanley:

David - I imagine it attracted a whole new clientele
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yeah - definitely putting the gittar down...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Apparently there's a need for a definitive Ice Cream Truck theme (or themes) in the world...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...didn't one HipHopper try to make one?...
Avatar 🚂 1:44pm Listening Out There:

Around here, ice cream trucks play "Bicycle Built for Two"...then they want to charge ~$4 USD for a crummy ice cream bar...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Django & Stephane stylee but actually recorded well is always startling...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Michael 98145:

yes
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:50pm chris in the redwoods:

'A day in Vienna' would be an excellent ice cream truck tune. esp w/ riffs on take five and salt peanuts. the ice cream truck jingle market won't know what hit em.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:50pm spodiodi:

this is making me dance
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Webhamster Henry:

Here are a few alternative ice cream pieces done for the Ice Cream Headache project: www.jhhl.net...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Handy Haversack:

Our ice cream trucks added a loud female voice that's kind of like at the beginning of Faye's show but much worse.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Handy Haversack:

Also: Kate would like to register a late guess of Ecuador. South America well covered today.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:54pm David (in London):

Django and Tony Iommi both.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Michael 98145:

NO pogo dancing in the train car
  1:56pm Marie:

They prob pronounce it like "Cumber" or "Cucumber"--look at how they pronounce "Chichester"--goshdang it
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Webhamster Henry:

I guess the lottery is unwon, so the prize goes up for next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah Django was a Gypsy - Romanian I guess I should say - & caught in a caravan fire. Left with two fretting fingers essentially. Forced him to pioneer a more lyrical Lead type playing & fewer chords - ahead of amplification for guitar when that would really start to make more sense. Utterly amazing really. Iommi lost fingertips in a factory accident - & replaced them with prosthetics. & tuning way down with very thin strings - which turned out to be pioneering steps for Metal...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Phillippe:

So I step away from my computer for half an hour and I miss the ice cream talk?
Avatar 🚂 1:58pm TDK60:

No one guessed Botswana. (The other African choices were Madagascar and Mauritania.)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Stanley:

"Ice Cream Man, ring your bell"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm David Dichelle:

Madagascar would be closest then (I think). Oddly we have still yet to have any countries from South America or the Middle East.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Handy Haversack:

Botswana! I'm in.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Webhamster Henry:

@Stanley, just loop the 9 minute extra encores version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm David Dichelle:

We all scream for it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm David Dichelle:

Welcome back, Bas!
Avatar 🚂 2:16pm TDK60:

Great sounds. Some cuts do sound similar to South African music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Delightful.
Avatar 🚂 2:20pm Bas NL:

Great party mood, this Ndombolo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm David Dichelle:

Ndombolo music and dance originated in the Congos and spread throught the region. Some consider it naughty, though: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Irene Trudel:

I finally had an afternoon where I didn't have to pay close attention to work. Been lurking all afternoon, David. Love this music from Botswana. What a joyful mood it creates!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm David Dichelle:

Hey Irene, glad to have you along for the ride!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Handy Haversack:

Sneak-listening during a meeting this last half hour ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm David Dichelle:

Handy: I won't tell.
Avatar 🚂 2:28pm TDK60:

Yes, joyous music sounds. Helps, as I've leaned sourpuss today.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:30pm doctorjazz:

That was fun!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:32pm David (in London):

TDK, I'm giving you a virtual tickle under the chin.

Ha, David. Love that English humor. (humour).
Avatar 🚂 2:39pm Will in Norman:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm David Dichelle:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 🚂 2:43pm Bas NL:

This is proof. It helps if you live closer to the sun! :D
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Handy Haversack:

And ended the meeting early. Botswana bringing me luck!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Doug Schulkind:

Interesting how the country randomizer is doing a regional thing. First it was Vietnam/Cambodia in back-to-back weeks. Now Namibia/Botswana.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Doug Schulkind:

(Apologies if you already mentioned it. I just tuned back in.)
  2:47pm Funky16Corners:

Hey David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm David Dichelle:

I know, that randomizer sure has a mind of its own. Ya never know...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm David Dichelle:

Hey everyone, lurking again, great show. It's Duke Ellington's birthday today, btw
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Michael 98145:

Thanks again, David D 🎵
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Handy Haversack:

Also, funny that the intelligence we narratively ascribe to David's randomizer is (in our imaginary) aware of the world map rather than just the (Presumably) alphabetical list of countries that David has it pick among!
  2:57pm Marie:

I picked up a very well done documentary about the history of lost civilizations in Africa--by the BBC, really taboo
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:57pm spodiodi:

thanks, David! loved the Botswana set
Avatar 🚂 2:57pm TDK60:

Yes, Rey, Duke's b.day. (WKCR FM in NYC is doing an all-day Duke special.)
