Good morning Doug. Great show last night. The video clip I'm guessing is some fellows performing Mississippi fife & drum music. I heard a special on it on WFMU, like back in 2003 or so.

Good Morning all!

No, Artie, the hollered "goat'!

Greetings to you, Artie! And you, TDK60! Stork! KWilde! And look, it's the man of the (middle) hour, Chris Albertyn!

On I-55, get off on the Senatobia exit and turn left (away from town) down Highway 4. Go approximately three Miles down that road to Gravel Springs Road (the second road to the right on 4 from Senatobia). Turn right on Gravel Springs Road. Go to the second 4-way stop and turn left (that road is OB McClinton Road) Follow that road about a half mile and the Turner’s Picnic is on the right there will be lots of cars & people gathered there. Park along the side of the road.

@Artie
Have you seen the "Gravel Springs" footage on Youtube? Amazing stuff. (Today's playlist GIF comes from it.)
  9:14am prudy:

good morning all...Doug, thanks for sharing this music...I've been reading Amiri Baraka's " Blues People" so this is a great sample...was unaware that the fife was used by Blues musicians...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

The fife and drum universe is pretty insular scene, having existed largely for its own self enchantments. The popular fife and drum repertoire is a relatively short set list. Top songs are "Sitting on Top of the World," which we won't hear in this set, and "Shimmy Shewobble," which we will!
Avatar 9:15am Listener Gregory:

I woke up to put this in my fife and smoke it.
Avatar 9:17am Chris Albertyn:

doctorjazz good morning!

@Alex in Illinois
There is not a ton out there. It has been a small universe that did not travel outside its local comfort zone much.

Avatar 10:40am Chris Albertyn:

Thanks Gina, doctorjazz, PAULS, spodiodi and all ... seems a little funny saying cheers 20 minutes out ... but, I wanted to make space for a solo piano coming up
Avatar 10:41am Listener Gregory:

I just turned my clock back an hour, so you owe us another hour of music, Chris. Sorry!
Avatar 10:41am PAULS:

Spo - you are dedicated! second shot after-effects and still up at zero dark for GTDS, kudos
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

@spodiodi
My wife had her second shot yesterday, too. She's doing okay. Achy and rundown, but okay. Hope you feel better soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am spodiodi:

thanks, Doug! same to your wife
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am alanr:

@Doug Schulkind Excellent memory. I thought, John would enjoy your show, so I put in on the radio (pre-online days!!). And then after a few selections, a new piece comes on and John says to me, "hey, that's me!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am spodiodi:

haha thanks, PAULS... i would have preferred to keep sleeping :) so early :-B
Avatar 10:43am TDK60:

(Just back from first-ever swabby probey test.)
I LOVE biggest wind energy at certain times and places, but funny how unfriendly the blowing can be. On a few occasions when I've ridden along the Cape Cod Canal, ya got a headwind for the several miles one way. By the time you've hung out at the beach at one end and start the return ride, it's the time of day when wind has tuuuurned by a seeming 180 degrees, and ya got Headwind and the Angry Inching all over again, with that special waterway way of feeling windtunnel-ish.

Avatar 11:04am Listener Gregory:

Interesting @still b/p. They have those home tests now that you barely insert into your nose, and they are supposedly reliable. So why do the brain-ticklers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

@PAULS
Thank you for alerting me. (Does that count as my sixth?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

Is there a more 1965 song title than "Let My People Split"?
Avatar 11:12am Listener Gregory:

It could be improved by adding "Daddy-o" at the end...
Avatar 11:12am PAULS:

I'm a frayed knot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

The lineup on this Sonny Stitt slice is an absurd who's who! Just wait until I read you the confab of genius gathered on this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

Four, count 'em four, trombones on this brooding work of beauty. Melba Liston, James Cleveland, Slide Hampton and Frank Rehak.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am fred:

Four trombones, but still no tuba?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
I have failed you.
Avatar 11:19am Listener Gregory:

Sixty years later, another woman is leading a trombone quartet (+ rhythm section): Jennifer Wharton's Bonegasm, featured in Downbeat this month. Haven't heard the group yet; the name doesn't do it any favors, IMHO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

If not tuba, then at least I should be able to come up with a single oneba.
Avatar 11:20am PAULS:

Listener Gregory - that name sticks with you tho amiright? never gonna forget it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
It is not the male space to criticize the name Bonegasm.
Avatar 11:21am PAULS:

Isn't Wharton from Boneonta, NY? sorry
  11:22am Mr C:

Man, thanks for playing this Doug. Haven't cycled back to this album in way too long..
  11:23am Mr C:

Maybe it's Chris I should thank!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr C
Had a hard time selecting the track from this smoker. Went with the home run instead of the stand-up triple.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am fred:

Some years ago, a woman tried to set up a rock camp for girls near/in Paris. Sadly, it looks like it fizzled out once she ran into visa trouble. She's a trombone player from NYC. I still got fine memories out of hanging out with her
Avatar 11:24am Listener Gregory:

Ms. Wharton is also unusual in being a bass trombonist, an instrument that gets almost no solo time and has few bandleaders. So, kudos to her.
Avatar 11:33am PAULS:

Bunky Green was awesome on that Serrano track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Franco Twinkie:

Hi Doug!
Avatar 11:37am PAULS:

SSSOOOOOOOOOOUL SET!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

So happy you're here, Franco Twinkie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

@PAULS
Bunky Green is a fabulous player. He has been largely out of the limelight for decades, down in Florida involved in music education.
Avatar 11:39am Listener Gregory:

I always love the Sol set, but maybe one time you could play a Luna set? There are some good moon songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Franco Twinkie:

I kind of feel like I'm in the Twighlight Zone this morning, but this is helping be get my boogie on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

The flip side of this Sir Guy record was a misprint. It should have read, "The Frisky Frog." But it didn't.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Uncle Michael:

There's been a turtle sighting...but not by me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:
