Willie Nelson Stan! Headcleaner! I hope you're ready for a Radically Jewish Episode of If You Lose Your Horse. Tonight, we celebrate the musical universe of John Zorn. Specifically, his Book of Angels releases from the 2000s-2010s.

Hello all! Apologies for missing the last few weeks. Signed up for a yoga retreat that was actually a yogurt retreat, and have been stuck in a vat of Yoplait.

Major change in approach for you to put Zorn pic on the playlist page.

Not to worry, NFL. Your absences are always excused. I received a note from your Doctor of Osteopathy.

I prefer vats of Cabot yogurt, but... let's see... curds and whey... something something Curd Duca? I don't know.

Hey
Avatar 10:11pm
NFL Longsnapper:

@Pie Welcome! I had a slice with my curds and whey before staring my intermittent fast.
  10:12pm
Pie:

hell who isn't?
  10:14pm
Pie:

That's nice and hope your fast goes well. I know fasting throughout the night helped me beat my night time snacking habit. Heck I still like to have a snack, but now I don't feel like I need it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Sam Segal:

@WR, for some reason my usual assortment of EPA images from the '70s didn't feel right with this theme. Glad you are here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Sam Segal:

You're on to something with that Cabot yogurt bit, Ike! Stick with it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Sam Segal:

Glad to hear the night time snacks continue on an occasional basis, Pie. Welcome!

Pie:

It's good to be home.

Pie:

Ya know, through it all, who this sounds like?

Shpongle.

Now shh.

Shpongle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Sam Segal:

Shpongle! Haven't thought of that band in a long time. We should connect with John Zorn.
  10:27pm
Pie:

Yeah I agree. I haven't seen them in years. Maybe even invite CHAZ.
  10:29pm
Pie:

Look autonomous zones aside, for as much of a poo bear as I like to be, I still have work to do and my role to play.

ZoЯn did "Freak on a Leash" if I'm not mistaken.
Avatar 10:29pm

Couldn't have that in the CHAZ. The strictures, the hegemony.

Pie:

Yeah, I'll be honest I don't know a John Zorn. Yet.

yet.

Pie:

I'm one google away from being a new man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm

Hahaha, @NFL, someone should start a Jewish Nu Metal group called ZoЯn.
  10:33pm
Pie:

Ha, that'd be a backwards way of representing Korn. Ha, but I could hash it out. Oh, believe me I could hash it out. Couldn't hold NuCypher though. Sold the dump. Nu-uh, cart before the horse son.

I always wanted a John Zorn, Eddie Van Halen collaboration.
  10:39pm

Yeah Kid Rock has been getting very politically charged and I just wish he'd get back to his roots. Whatever those are.

He had an eclectic upbringing on Lake Michigan..

Thank you for bringing enough nicotine gum for everybody, Pie! Very considerate of you.
  11:03pm
Pie:

Yes I learned that lesson in second grade.
I didn't bring enough birthday invitations or patience for birthday parties for the entire class and was warned of classroom policy.

No more birthday parties for this guy ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Sam Segal:

The policy was that you had to invite everyone in the class to your party?
  11:04pm
Pie:

First let me say this is not the policies problem or fault.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Sam Segal:

But of course. Wouldn't want to get you in trouble with the teacher by disparaging the policy.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Little Danny:

Oh man I don't think I'd appreciated how many volumes there were in this series. I assumed it was like vols. 1-10, or something.
  11:06pm
Pie:

The policy was that invitations were to handed out outside of the classroom setting so as to not hurt any excluded parties feelings.

I've been there..

regardless,

The invitiations and pressure was too much.
  11:08pm
Pie:

Things got out of hand a mess was made. multiple times. And I was forced to retire from the formal scene and move into the underground scene of biking the neighborhoods.,

Sam, I wasn't paying too close attention, but I WAS sort of thinking there was a lack of sax.

And the Masada Quintet DID sound particularly nice.

And hey! coelacanth and chresti are here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm

I don't know why, but I feel like Zorn doesn't work with many other saxophonists in the recordings in this series. And he himself barely plays on any of them.

@Sam: Random-ish question. Have you heard Dizzy Gillespie's Portrait of Jenny LP? Similar sorta loose, moody vibe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm

I have not heard that one, LD. Will definitely have to check it out now.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:45pm

I recommend it all the time, Sam. Totally underrated (and cheap in original LP format), too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm

I don't think I've heard any Dizzy recordings from that late into his career actually. Now I'm really curious.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:48pm

Yes, the Masada String Trio was my introduction to the Book of Angels series. I cherish their recordings. Got to see them live at a festival for Zorn's 60th birthday at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Zorn sat on the floor in front of them conducting.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
