"But Not for Me"

Old man sunshine, listen you
Don't you tell me dreams come true
Just try it, and I'll start a riot

Beatrice Fairfax, don't you dare
Ever tell me, he will care
I'm certain, it's the final curtain

I never wanna hear
From any cheerful Pollyannas
Who tell you Fate supplies a mate
It's all bananas

They're writing songs of love
But not for me
A lucky star's above
But not for me

With love to lead the way
I found more clouds of gray
Than any Russian play
Could guarantee

I was a fool to fall
And get that way
Hi-ho, alas! and al-
So, lack-a-day
Avatar 9:40am Listener Gregory:

I would have said "But Not For Me" is one of the more popular standards. It's certainly a great song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

@Phillippe
I love bluegrass of all flavours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am listener Rey:

I always felt that walking bass came from imitating the left hand of stride pianists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
I would never get in the ring to time-warp wrestle with Bryce. He is the master.

Hey hey, HyperDose!
Avatar 9:42am Listener Gregory:

Doug, is the piano roll recorded by Gershwin but "played" by Lawrence Cook? (There are people whose expertise is playing piano rolls, sadly.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

These Armed Forced Radio discs were also sent overseas to entertain the troops.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Webhamster Henry:

They're giving drummers some but not for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

@listener Rey
You wouldn't be wrong. I will play a tune in the next set with the pianist's left hand imitating the walking bass, which was imitating the a pianist's left hand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Cook's performance was captured by the piano roll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

Red Mitchell on bass here with Billie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Webhamster Henry:

Piano rolls were the original digital music. Performances could be captured and edited and augmented with impossible to play pitches and articulations.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Hard to believe, but I am leaving out of this set the Sinatra version. It just didn't add anything special. There, I said it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

@Webhamster Henry
You caught that quote from Sweet Edison!
Avatar 9:50am PAULS:

  9:51am Funky16Corners:

Good morning!
Avatar 9:51am PAULS:

Sinatra-lege! How could you, Doug? I know I could.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am listener Rey:

Walking bass has been around so long now, what did the bass play before the advent of walking bass?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

In the original lyric, Ira Gershwin references Beatrice Fairfax, a fictional character that was a famous advice columnist in a popular radio serial. In a particular horrible version of this song, Rod Stewart changes the reference to "Oprah Winfrey."

#funfact
Avatar 9:52am Listener Gregory:

"When every happy plot ends in a marriage knot,
but there's no knot for me."
That is a lyric.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

@listener Rey
You gotta crawl before you walk?
Avatar 9:52am PAULS:

On-all-fours bass?
Avatar 9:53am βrian:

Walking bass sounds like an evolutionary stage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am KimSorise:

I don't always find Sinatra offering much in the way of anything special. Maybe it was all those years working for ticketmaster in the 90s and handling Atlantic City. ugh

But Sam Cooke - swoon swoon
Avatar 9:53am TDK60:

Was there walking jazz tuba before bass?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am KimSorise:

Please, TDK60.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

Some versions of the song include these lyrics:

Although I can't dismiss
The memory of his kiss
I guess he's not for me.
I know that love's a game
I'm puzzled all the same
Was I the moth or flame
I'm all at sea.
It all began so well
But what an end.
This time a gal could sure
Use a friend
Avatar 9:54am PAULS:

I imagine you'd get yer trotting bass, yer full gallop bass, and yer Maserati bass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am adamdoesit:

I had to get up and walk my bass during the Chet Baker, lest it be a butt knot for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Webhamster Henry:

Come on this is the drummer stream, where's the Bollywood cover?
Avatar 9:54am still b/p:

Sinatra still has, you know, people. People who might, you know, "talK' wit' you.
Shecky Greene: "Frank Sinatra saved my life once. He said, 'Okay, boys. That's enough.'"

Avatar 9:56am bobdc:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

@KimSorise
In my hunt for the Billie Holiday version of this song, I actually came across some tunes with Kenny Burrell playing her. I was floored by that. Had no idea he had performed with Bille. The great Kenny B has been EVERYWHERE.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am HyperDose:

I am enamored with anything and everything Blue Note related
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

As far as I can tell, this Percy Heath performance on bass is the earliest of the versions of "But Not for Me" featuring this prominently walking bass.
Avatar 10:00am TDK60:

Tangent: I was in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx the other day to see a recently departed pal's grave, very near to Miles' and Duke's gravestones.

I swear that I own this recording... but where is it? I will be very grateful to the person who tells me.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Uncle Michael:

Hi, Kim!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Jeff Golick:

From the session notes: "This is the session where Miles asked Monk to lay out (not play) during his (Miles) choruses. Monk, who comes to play although he had practiced the idea of laying out himself long before this session, was insulted by the request. After Miles' beautifully logical solo Milt plays a forceful declarative one as Monk comps timidly at first for him. Thelonious' solo follows and he tosses rhythmic figures around like someone bouncing a rubber ball off a wall, but drops out again as Miles re-emerges to sum up in a model solo". <<< not this tune, tho

The piano is largely unintelligible on this terrible live recording, but the bass comes through just fine. Which is all I care about just now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am KimSorise:

This Sonny Clark is rocking!
Glad the Jamal version gets the crowning spot. I like this one too - with Oscar Peterson and Roy Eldridge - but it;s not about the bass.

youtu.be...
  10:15am Ramblin' Ray:

Bass is the place.
  10:15am Funky16Corners:

I like what Sonny is doing with his left hand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
The Sinatra version was from 1979. It was from the "Past" segment of the famously awful/glorious The Trillogy. The other two discs represented "Present" and "Future" (featuring the unforgetable "World War III.")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

All the versions of this tune that were left on the cutting room floor would make a fine show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Brian in UK:

There is a contemporary song with the But Not For Me line in it, I am sure.
Cannot for the life of me place it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Jeff Golick:

Aha. That explains why I couldn't find it. I could've sworn the young Frank cut a version, but, I guess, not for us.
Avatar 10:18am still b/p:

I think Ella's version is the one I hear most often, on radio station that plays (mostly) standards.
If you mentioned this, I missed it: 19 year old Ginger Rogers sang it in stage version of Girl Crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am KimSorise:

Sun Ra did a version as well... if I remember correctly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
I could not find a recording of Ginger Rogers from 1930. I did fine a remake she did in the 1970s that was a nice bit of nostalgia, but nothing that would add to the discussion. The Ella version is marvelous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Jeff Golick:

wow huh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

@KimSorise
Coming up next, my dear!
Avatar 10:22am Listener Gregory:

The Coltrane version proves the old adage, "To a man with a hammer, everything looks like Giant Steps."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Brian in UK:

What is it about this period Coltrane, it sounds like I have know it since birth and will remain with me until I shrug off my mortal coil.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Please hand in your homework assignment by midnight next Thursday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am KimSorise:

Oh yay! Thanks, Drum Major Doug!
Avatar 10:23am still b/p:

Next week: 36 versions of "If Not For You."

Don't tempt me.
Avatar 10:24am bobdc:

Essay topic for the homework: compare and contrast Steve Davis's bass playing with Coltrane (e.g. on this album) with Art Davis's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Jeff Golick:

McCoy seems not fully "McCoy Tyner" on this one?
  10:24am Funky16Corners:

The original movie version of Girl Crazy was a vehicle for old time comedy team Wheeler and Woolsey. The version of But Not For Me was sung by character actor Eddie Quillan!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Brian in UK:

Will do, but I need more carbon paper as you want it in triplicate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
McCoy would like a quick word with you after the show.
Avatar 10:25am PAULS:

TRAYYYYYYNNNNE
Avatar 10:25am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff G, are you saying he's not the real McCoy??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Jeff Golick:

I know, I know. And yes, exactly, @LG. That comes later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Brian in UK:

When I saw McCoy Tyner a few years back he was not even 50% Tyner. Played less than an hour all told.

@Doug - I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn by proclaming myself the Drummer Stream’s foremost Wheeler and Woolsey fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

When E.F. Hutton and Funky16Corners speak, people listen!
Avatar 10:28am Listener Gregory:

Seriously, Trane & McCoy have turned the opening lines of the song into Giant Steps, while sort of maintaining their integrity. Never quite noticed that before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, the different harmonies are really noticeable, @LG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

I'm sure Tommy Flanagan was just fine with McCoy taking this one. (Flanagan gets famoulsy, fabulously lost in the middle of "Giant Steps.")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am doctorjazz:

LG hit it, all those chords through the cycle are Trane at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

Ronnie Boykins on bass here with Sun Ra. This was recorded in Chicago probably a mile or less from the site of our next, and, sadly, final version of "But Not for Me."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

John Gilmore featured on tenor. An absolute giant and a powerful influence on the previous John on tenor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

One of the most famous bass performances of all time, right here.
  10:35am Funky16Corners:

This has been great, Doug. Such a sublime piece of Gershwin, almost a meditative exercise hearing it interpreted so many ways.
Avatar 10:35am PAULS:

Oh man I love this tune. I caught him live at Blues Alley in... 1989. Stunning.
Avatar 10:36am Listener Gregory:

I'm not sure I would call this walking bass, though. It has more flourishes. I am not an expert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am KimSorise:

I want more!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Jeff Golick:

Ahmad was a big influence on Miles, I think? Wonder if AJ had cut a version before the 54 Miles you played.
Avatar 10:38am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, Miles tried to hire Jamal, who preferred to lead his own trio.
Avatar 10:41am bobdc:

We are supposed to say, "This beat is developmentally challenged."
Avatar 11:23am Listener Gregory:

The Happy Moveing Star Band has to work out who is the star at each gig. "It's my turn!" "No, you were the star two weeks ago; I haven't starred for a month." "Your memory is very convenient." It's not pretty... or happy.
