Avatar 9:42am Ursula1000:

Prince started his reign in the late 70's but it wasn't until the early 80's where he really started to change the landscape ditching industry funk standards like horn sections and drum for synthesizers and drum machines. The influence of the emerging New Wave scene also came into play on his sonic palette creating something called the Minneapolis Sound. This sounds permeated throughout the R&B pop world with some heavy-duty mimicking. I thought it'd be fun to explore some of these artists who clearly where more than just inspired by Prince...and in some cases very well-known talents who also got bit by the Prince's Minneapolis Funk bug!

All right! Pulling on my raspberry beret for this!
Avatar 12:00pm Ursula1000:

hey ARB!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm chresti:

Looky at all those jerry curls!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm ARB:

I saw much better music theater and art living in Minneapolis than I do in Los Angeles.
Avatar 12:05pm Feldpausch:

It was the heyday of people being named Sheila. Hi Ursulka1K and the gang!
Avatar 12:05pm Ursula1000:

one of the artists coming up are from a family known for their hair products!
Avatar 12:05pm Ursula1000:

Hey Feld!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm ARB:

I posted this somewhere yesterday but it fits here today as well:
Clones are people two!
Avatar 12:06pm Ursula1000:

oh that's right ARB--are u from there or just spent time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm chresti:

And shoulder pads!
Avatar 12:07pm Ursula1000:

lots of pumped up shoulder pads and a LOT of pleats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm ARB:

I lived there for 10 years. I grew up 8 hours south in Kansas City
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm ARB:

There hasn't been a "Kansas City Sound" for almost a century
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm chresti:

I've only changed planes in Minneapolis.

So about as far as SF is from LA, ARB
Avatar 12:08pm Ursula1000:

when I think of KC I just think of smashed burgers!
Avatar 12:10pm Ursula1000:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm chresti:

I've never been to Kansas, only had friends from there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Franco Twinkie:

Hi Alina! That was quite a show last night. I was wondering if you were kind of high for your maiden voyage. You sounded like you were floating around during your first mic break.
Avatar 12:13pm Ursula1000:

hi Franco!
Avatar 12:13pm Domenic:

Thanks for this concept program. Anyone watch the 60 Minutes program on Princes musical output? Pretty good. Can't help thinking that Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna and myself were all born within a few months of each other, 1958..
Avatar 12:14pm Ursula1000:

Hey Domenic---yep totally watched that---the legendary Prince vault!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Otis:

Waaaaaa Prince Clones?! Happy I checked in just now live. Notso is gonna love this, where is the doctor at? Not the Doc in the revolution of course.
Avatar 12:15pm Ursula1000:

hey Otis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Otis:

Looking at my Prince Black Velvet now while listening.

Avatar 12:23pm Domenic:

Exotics Storm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Franco Twinkie:

I am so loving this show Ursula!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Otis:

Prince stepped into The Quiet Storm and it got all Exotic.
Avatar 12:24pm Ursula1000:

Thanks Franco!
Avatar 12:25pm Ursula1000:

these guys were actually from Minnesota!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Otis:

We need a proper box set of THIS stuff, like Numero did 94 East Pre-Purple.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Otis:

Exotic Storm: Template, Baby I'm A Star +++

Love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm ARB:

High on what?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Otis:

Wow, Controversy sound here.
Avatar 12:27pm Ursula1000:

totally! that Numero comp was cool but there's so much more---while I was curating this show I must have had like 4+ hours of this style to choose from!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Otis:

God, I bet Ursula. I don't know 1/2 of this stuff.
Avatar 12:30pm Ursula1000:

a lot of these are artists that cut just the 1 album and then vanished
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Franco Twinkie:

That I wouldn't know, you just seemed elsewhere. But having said that, you were back in the saddle on the outro.
Avatar 12:33pm solo mon:

Dancing around too much to comment yet! BROMAR!
Avatar 12:33pm Ursula1000:

I hope you're wearing your frilly pirate shirt Solo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Otis:

Full Force Fodder here getting busy one time.
Avatar 12:34pm Domenic:

Hearing these clones, can finally detect there is a Prince sound and can appreciate the style a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Little Danny:

My pie-crust collar is the only symmetrical thing on me right now. Hi Ursula, hi all! Hot playlist!
Avatar 12:35pm Ursula1000:

totally Domenic--I mean, Prince didn't invent falsetto but that with the heavy synths and rock guitar soloing was a definite trait that people ate up and bit
Avatar 12:35pm Feldpausch:

Bromar sounds like a portmanteau, like Brother Marshmallow
Avatar 12:35pm Ursula1000:

hi Little Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Franco Twinkie:

I never realized how many people were transfixed with doing a glide on a mini-moog until this morning.
Avatar 12:37pm Ursula1000:

haha mini Moog glides were everywhere! replaced the bass slide!
Avatar 12:41pm Ursula1000:

a little Vanity 6 vibe here
Avatar 12:41pm Feldpausch:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Little Danny:

Keyboard-related graphic motifs were so necessary in '80s R&B.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Little Danny:

I love this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Franco Twinkie:

Touch tone drops - a moment in time.

In a parallel world, a young man with his hair in his eyes was getting a Roland 808 out of a box and wondering how to get this thing to make the sounds in this head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Franco Twinkie:

What Time Is It!!!!
Avatar 12:59pm Ursula1000:

HEAVY Time vibe
Avatar 12:59pm Mr Fab:

Hey all! We won't be hearing a certain Phil Collins song emanating from Ursula's home stu-stu-studio, will we? (Or must we, to complete the concept?)
Avatar 1:00pm Ursula1000:

hey Fab! I was tempted...but I ended up not including that---or Stevie's Stand Back (which was actually secretly co written by Prince)--sing Stand Back over Little Red Corvette---perfect lock!
Avatar 1:01pm Sem:

Hey, hey, U1K. Been a while. Hello, sounds spectatcular devotees.
Avatar 1:02pm Ursula1000:

hey Sem!
Avatar 1:02pm Ursula1000:

Charlie nearly nicking Prince's logo!
Avatar 1:04pm Mr Fab:

It must be easy to find these records - just look for Jehri curls and moustaches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Franco Twinkie:

I suspect that just about now the ecstasy is falling out of peoples pockets and been stomped into powder on the dance floor.
  1:10pm Duane:

SO dope! I'm loving this
Avatar 1:10pm Ursula1000:

Hey Duane!
Avatar 1:11pm Mr Fab:

Haha, of course! We summoned Duane. His Prince-y sense was tingling.
Avatar 1:11pm Duane:

What's up? Great to hear you again...this is my shit so you KNOW i'd be here:)
Avatar 1:14pm Ursula1000:

Damn Ray....you too? haha
Avatar 1:15pm Feldpausch:

I'd know that Ghostbuster's voice anywhere
Avatar 1:16pm solo mon:

You’ve heard Sheila E but have you heard Sheila F ??
Avatar 1:17pm Ursula1000:

Sheila B need Sheila E on her show
Avatar 1:17pm solo mon:

I think since Huey Lewis stole his ghostbuster riff, all bets were off.
Avatar 1:18pm Domenic:

Its been said Prince was a genre all on his own. Can hear that now..
Avatar 1:20pm Ursula1000:

Micki Free cut this after his shirts vs blouses b-ball match against Charlie Murphy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Little Danny:

Massive show so far Ursula. Love this tight focus.
Avatar 1:23pm Ursula1000:

thanks Little Danny!
Avatar 1:26pm solo mon:

Read my 👄
Avatar 1:27pm Mr Fab:

I've seen Sheila E live, playing with her pop, Afro-Cuban maestro Pete Escovedo. No singing about glamorous lives, just pounding the snot out of her timbales.
Avatar 1:30pm Ursula1000:

that Sign o' the Times concert film where Sheila E is on drums....daaaaaaaamn! She absolutely kills it.
Avatar 1:34pm Ursula1000:

this would mix perfectly w Automatic!
Avatar 1:36pm Domenic:

Sheila E, A hot female Tito Puente.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Otis:

Was cleaning the place here and Curiousity came on. Flashback to seeing the Jets play live with El Debarge at a San Diego County Fair in 1985. 'Who's Johnny' got a 'Crush on' now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Little Danny:

This period in the mid- to late '80s feels like some final moment for hard funk on the R&B charts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Otis:

Love the Nasty Girl 'don'cha wanna be' line in thsi one! Haven't heard this gem, or quite a few this show. Top top show Ursula. I cannot work so I clean and groove.
Avatar 1:39pm Ursula1000:

yeah it's a fascinating time where bands like Cameo who were like an 8 piece with a horn section trimmed down to a synth heavy trio
Avatar 1:41pm Ursula1000:

Otis--Greens III came out w 1 album called Razor that's pretty cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Otis:

I starred the Greens III song, will dig in, thanks U1K in the groove 2-(morris)-Day!
Avatar 1:44pm Mr Fab:

Yeah, didn't the Gap Band have more members in the '70s, til they went electro and shrunk?
Avatar 1:45pm Sem:

Your show has been a revelation to me: I had no idea that so many groups took the Prince sound and ran with it, hard. Thx, U1K, for that thought to ponder.
Avatar 1:45pm Ursula1000:

sounds about right Mr Fab---I think Earth Wind and Fire were one of the few from that era that still kept it as a larger group--then again, the EWF horn section is something you can't replace w a synth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Otis:

You Dropped A Bomb 12" had just 3 on the cover. Early Gap to 80s gap, so good.
Avatar 1:46pm Ursula1000:

cheers Sem! fun to curate!
  1:46pm Eric Kilkenny:

Gooood Morning Ursula 1000!
Avatar 1:46pm Mr Fab:

I mean they "shrunk" by losing band members, not getting shorter!
Avatar 1:46pm Ursula1000:

hey MB!
Avatar 1:49pm Mr Fab:

Eric! The Artist Formerly Knows As Martinibomb will be returning to the Jungle Room next week. Medium Cool is back! Preceding Otis for a day of cool, friendly melodramas.
  1:49pm Eric Kilkenny:

Martinibomb is dead
Avatar 1:50pm Ursula1000:

ooh awesome news Eric!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Otis:

Tuesday is going to be terrific. I moved up to 2-6pm ET snuggled in-between Eric and Shangri-La.

Schedule is really filling out with more shows on the way... wfmu.org...
  1:51pm Eric Kilkenny:

yeh it'll be a good lineup of DJs on Tuesdays
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Otis:

Ursula, will you do another installment in time with all the tracks you sourced please?
Avatar 1:52pm Ursula1000:

of course!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Otis:

Thanks pal. Loving this show so much.
Avatar 1:55pm Ursula1000:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Otis:

RIP Jermaine. I still do not need to take my clothes off to have a good time.
Avatar 1:58pm Ursula1000:

the perfect sister show to this would be the influence of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis of The Time and their production influence which is possibly bigger than Prince on the Soul landscape of the mid to late 80s. Though Prince would probably claim they're just ripping HIM off!
Avatar 1:59pm Ursula1000:

thanks 4 swinging by everyone! stay tuned 4 Solo Mon and Primal Ice Cream xoxo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Otis:

Oh please yes do do do. I read Morris' 'On Time' book last year, got so-so reviews but I loved it. Jam & Lewis show, I'm so tuned in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm chresti:

So Kitten Sparkles is today?
