A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm StringOFperils:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah. A lot of their stuff seems largely collaborative with other folks, but they are active, happily.
Avatar 🎸 8:23pm Marco Esquandolas:

Carmichael, that’s what I say when reading William Burroughs . What the hell am I reading ?
Avatar 8:24pm ironybread:

Solo - if Rich had you at Shithouse, I'm going to own you with tomorrow's Fuji Puzzle Box!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Carmichael:

He should never have taken drugs. Hunter Thompson himself said that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Rich in Washington:

ooo! Whatcha gonna do, ironybread?
Avatar 🎸 8:27pm Marco Esquandolas:

That’s rich coming from Hunter SThompson
Avatar 8:27pm ironybread:

Scott & Aitch, tomorrow's episode of Fuji Puzzle Box is a 90-minute salute to TISM. #TheLoveYouTakeIsEqualToTheLoveYouMakeSoBabyLetMeBangYourBox
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Carmichael:

Well, he thought he could handle drugs more easily than anyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Rich in Washington:

I think what Thompson meant was "he never should've taken drugs. He should've given them to ME".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Carmichael:

Yep, Rich. Especially the ether.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:30pm ultradamno:

...and he should have never have bought guns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm StringOFperils:

I knew this was her. I was downstairs, but I know how she touches the piano. it's distinctive.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:30pm ultradamno:

Though that really goes for both of them.
Avatar 8:33pm ARB:

I've been summoned
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Rich in Washington:

Diamanda is maybe the most harrowing performer I've ever seen live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Rich in Washington:

It worked! Howdy, ARB!
Avatar 8:33pm ARB:

I refused to die before seeing her live, now it's been twice so I'm good to go
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Rich in Washington:

Whoa! You died TWICE?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Rich in Washington:

oh wait
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Scott67:

This schedule switch along with the time change here, has me so weirded out. I just poured a glass of wine and went back to bed. It's 10:35am Saturday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Rich in Washington:

I have this fantastic interview with her that no one's seen. I bought a VHS tape from a collector's estate sale and he apparently interviewed her in the late 80s. It's really good but the sound quality needs serious work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm StringOFperils:

Diamanda can take you to where you can die twice.
Avatar 🎸 8:36pm Marco Esquandolas:

Hahaha
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Aitch:

That'll be an ungodly hour ironybread, but I'll set an alarm.
TISM quite something, live shows really something.
Have a look at Regurgitator too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Rich in Washington:

I'm weirded out too, Scoot67! But I'm gonna embrace it and do the weirdest fucking show ever, or die trying.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:37pm ultradamno:

Then listen to Cornershop to get born twice more.
Avatar 8:37pm ARB:

It seems like a good day to play some Crass as well
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Scott67:

Ironybread, that's great man! You are doing what you said. I will try to be there live!?👍😎🌏
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:39pm ultradamno:

Tom Cora died on this date in 1998, so maybe some Skeleton Crew or him with The Ex....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Rich in Washington:

Oh funny, ARB! I almost grabbed some Crass earlier. Any suggestions?
Avatar 🎸 8:40pm Marco Esquandolas:

This is good. I’ve never heard of Diamanda. It reminds me of the darker Rachmaninov pieces
Avatar 8:40pm ARB:

Bloody Revolutions?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm StringOFperils:

This is so good for me to listen to right now, even if it's killing a whole lot of other people. Heh. Diamanda's piano prowess is pretty respectable. And well-documented. Mic'd up really well.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:40pm ultradamno:

I would go with Where Next Columbus.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Scott67:

I will be listening Rich! Went to bed because it's cold here this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm Rich in Washington:

Oh man, Marco! Are you in for a treat. And she's not even primarily known for her piano work, rather her vocal work. Be careful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm Rich in Washington:

ultra: I sadly don't have Penis Envy (huh!)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:42pm ultradamno:

That's because you've never watched any Lexington Steele or John Holmes movies (I'll show myself out)
Avatar 8:43pm ironybread:

Ooh, nice tip Aitch, thanks - looks like TISM toured with Regurgitator in July/August 1998: www.tapatalk.com...
Avatar 🎸 8:45pm Marco Esquandolas:

Nice, will definitely be checking out more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm chresti:

I am liking her piano work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Rich in Washington:

The C section of my punk vimyl are behind a leaning stack of records that I'm too lazy to shelve but I managed to free the Crass records. What I do for you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm StringOFperils:

How great to DJ and play this kind of music! This must right some of the wrongs in the universe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Rich in Washington:

Her piano work is incredible. It really shines in her later releases.
Avatar 8:46pm ironybread:

Looks like the first song on the first Regurgitator album is "I Sucked A Lot Of Cock To Get Where I Am". Good, I'm already on board
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Rich in Washington:

I've never been accused of righting anything so I'll take it, SOP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm Rich in Washington:

Now THERE'S a title that leaps off the page!
Avatar 8:48pm ARB:

I had an un-baptism station once at a Black Sabbathon event, that involved listening to Diamanda, eating corpse fruit and getting painted with cow/pigs blood (depending on upbringing)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:48pm ultradamno:

You can catch diseases sucking on roosters like that.
Avatar 8:49pm ARB:

Rich, I would love to hear/watch that interview someday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm StringOFperils:

I need CRASS. Of course I fucking do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Carmichael:

Ain’t gonna lie, shot#2 beat me down a bit. But I’m back.
Avatar 8:50pm ARB:

Feeling extra anti-imperial today, thanks for scratching the itch!
Avatar 8:50pm ARB:

Of course you fucking do
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Rich in Washington:

Oh, I've had this record since I was a teenager. P-P-PLEASE DON'T SKIP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm StringOFperils:

Sounds magnificent. Black plastic decoding.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Scott67:

Ironybread, I love Regurgitator!
Saw one of there early gigs, when my cousins band Knobtang supported. And one of their last gigs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Rich in Washington:

I found this comp interesting when it came out, They sounded so different on their singles versus their LPs.
Avatar 🎸 8:52pm Marco Esquandolas:

Yeah, I felt like I had a bad hangover after the second shot. Next day all was well.

Avatar 8:54pm Mod Mokka Matti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Rich in Washington:

(in the us they *rollerblade* past the injustice)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm ultradamno:

I haven't, need to correct that

Is Acts of Love (the Penny/Eve album) the one you're talking about?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm ultradamno:

...oh, a couple of years ago is much more recent.
Avatar 8:59pm ARB:

I've heard there's still an open-door policy at Dial House, was going to try my luck.
When I was a goat herder there was a copy of Gee Vaucher's book in the cabin and it took a lot of will power to not take it with me when I left.

Kitten Sparkles was all Firesign this week, and if you haven't heard the first few moments of Surfin' Bird enough in your life, that show will rectify that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Rich in Washington:

The Vaucher book was briefly back in print and for pretty reasonable. I snapped it up, but pronto.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah, that tape he played was fantastic. A great show!

@ultradamno That WAS a pretty great Firesign live request show. Ha ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Franco Twinkie:

I called Bruce Litz to tell him this was on. But he's deep forest in someplace in Washington and won't answer the phone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Carmichael:

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:06pm ultradamno:

I had no idea they were The Eagles
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Carmichael:

Whoa ultra, I was just getting to like you ...
Avatar 9:07pm ironybread:

When Peter Bergman used to take requests on Radio Free Oz, he'd say, "Yes, we've got that...yes, our engineer is looking for it...yes, here it is!" and then he'd play "Roadrunner" by Junior Walker
Avatar 9:10pm ironybread:

Yes, Bruce Litz is working in Washington right now - he did illustrations for the upcoming book version of "Tales of the Old Detective" which contains even more stories than are in the audiobook!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Franco Twinkie:

I went looking for Bruce today at his old haunt. No one has talked to him in months.

Torch coming first affects the tone of my comments.

Avatar 9:28pm ARB:

This is exciting and new to me!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm ultradamno:

I did get to see them with KL dancing once at Bogarts in Cinti...great show!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Scott67:

It appears you're taking Street Dining to the edge there Franco.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm coelacanth∅:

i've read about Kathleen Lynch's band but never heard it 'till now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm chresti:

Yes, my brain is flipping around in my head with torch on first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Rich in Washington:

Coming up, Uncle Michael. I'm not even kidding/threatening
Avatar 9:30pm ARB:

I only saw them in 2008 but they played an all 80s set, and then met Gibby at his book signing in 2019, that's the biggest I've ever smiled.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:32pm ultradamno:

I've got this one and Lights Unfold, they're both really good. There is another called Purify I have not but should track down.
Avatar 🎸 9:33pm Marco Esquandolas:

This rocks !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm StringOFperils:

I remember the Blast First and SST catalogues being very lively around this time period.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Rich in Washington:

I've seen that pic, ARB! I wish I had met them. I've seen them a few times but never met them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Rich in Washington:

I saw one show with Kathleen dancing and lots of crazy fire play and then another where the city wouldn't let them have a nude dancer on stage, so no Kathleen. I think everybody there was tripping on something. It was magic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Franco Twinkie:

Scott, I was trying to summons Bruce with his favorite sandwich. It didn't work, so I ate it myself.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm ultradamno:

Blast First had that series of comic artist curated compilations (except Pettibon's and Panter's which were their stuff) picture discs that were especially awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Rich in Washington:

I think some Savage Pencil stuff too, if memory serves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Rich in Washington:

This almost sounds like Paul Leary on guitar.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm ultradamno:

I've always pronounced it Be Me though. I have no idea if there's a correct way.

Rich, I'll trade you meeting Gibby for seeing them in the 80s?

I also saw them in the early 90s and wondered what went wrong.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:44pm ultradamno:

That Metro show was great, I saw them four times and that was the one time I got to see them run down Brown Reason/Another Man's Sac/Cream Corn material
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Rich in Washington:

I'm looking for some of their 80s Portland Pine Street appearances. They played two (I think consecutive) Halloween night shows and I attended both of them. I get them both mixed up in my head.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Scott67:

Nice 💩🌊 UltraD!! 😎🤙
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Rich in Washington:

and almost every time I've seen them, Smegma opened for them.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Scott67:

That so suited my day Rich!
Avatar 🎸 9:46pm Marco Esquandolas:

@ultradamno, I’ve seen a bunch of shows at Bogart’s, including King Crimson. Definitely a dirty venue in the ‘Nasti
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Uncle Michael:

Thank you. Featuring Paul Quarino ....
Avatar 9:47pm ARB:

Got any SCUM manifesto?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Rich in Washington:

Yay, Scott67!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Rich in Washington:

NO? Who would read that?
Avatar 9:49pm ARB:

I'll read it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Rich in Washington:

There are no credits on this CD. It may well be Paul Quarino for all I know

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm Rich in Washington:

This CD's concept is so fucked up I would not be surprised if Kitten Sparkles was somehow involved.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:50pm coelacanth∅:

her inappropriate placement of emphasis kind of ruins it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Rich in Washington:

The only time I saw X Exene couldn't sing on key to save her life. Maybe bad monitor situation? It was weird.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:52pm ultradamno:

Prescient Dreams would be a good follow up to this
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:53pm coelacanth∅:

even her whines didn't eventually hit the right key?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:53pm ultradamno:

I only got to see them on the Ain't Love Grand and she was trying to sing...but it was a good show, Zoom was still on board.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm chresti:

She took singing lessons at some point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Rich in Washington:

I'm not sure why this is all one long track, when there is clearly breaks in the pieces. Oh well.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Scott67:

Exsistence is Futile!🤖☠
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:59pm ultradamno:

It's too bad Lydia Lunch couldn't read it along with her, you know, harmonizing
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Uncle Michael:

She does go on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Mr Fab:

I love X, but I can’t listen to this. The Unabomber was not just a murderer, but a fucking idiot. Play “alphabetland”!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Scott67:

All thus leads me to share this.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:01pm ultradamno:

I think editing down this to multiple tracks might have been considered a use of technology contrary to the message.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:03pm ultradamno:

...editing this down...that is.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Uncle Michael:

I'm turning in. Thanks, Rich. Night, all.

Avatar 10:05pm ironybread:

Well okay if it's at least 50% fateful I'm on board.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Rich in Washington:

I think that Unabomber album was just done really quickly on the cheap. It's really cheaply packaged. Like some ideas you have while high are not exactly good ideas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Rich in Washington:

this record could be hilariously edited.

I saw the Butthole Surfers 5 times in the ‘90s. Just an addictive experience. I would stand slack-jawed. Last time I saw them tho I def got the sense that they were winding down. I blame rehab.

I used to do all manner of workplace pranks with our phone system and public address system but ultimately, it's like trying to explain Peter Greenaway movies to the neighbor's cat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Rich in Washington:

people are kind of immune to subtle mindfuck type pranks now, thanks to reality becoming really weird or something.
Avatar 10:22pm ARB:

Explaining Peter Greenaway movies to a neighbors cat sounds like a lovely Friday night
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Mr Fab:

You have edu-macated me, Rich - I had never heard of Beme Seed, or that Texas comp you played last week, even tho I use to try to track down all BH-related phenomena e.g. The Jack Officers, Drain, Paul Leery solo. Thought I had it all..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Rich in Washington:

Our neighbor's cat is pretty chill. I would not mind if he stayed. Our cats would beg to differ, though.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Mr Fab:

Re pranks, Radio Steamr worked pretty well. Wonder if those pissed-off listeners returned?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Scott67:

Sweet dreams Otis! ✌😎
Avatar 10:27pm ironybread:

We have a white-with-black-and-brown-bits cat in the neighborhood that stops by some evenings and meows for me to follow it across the street into a neighbor's yard, and I've had many fruitful conversations with kitty about the concept of human territorial boundaries
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm Rich in Washington:

Nighty night Otis! Say goodnight to Constance and Leland for me!
Avatar 10:28pm ironybread:

Otis - you should tell Leland a dirty joke and film his reaction
Avatar 10:29pm Leland Meadows:

Nighty Night Rich. I am currently sleepwalking of course as I now go to sleep at the respectable hour of 8pm. New dream approaching, they occur every 5 minutes. Must goooooooo

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Scott67:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Rich in Washington:

I've heard of that one but haven't heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Rich in Washington:

one of the things I miss about my station: they were well serviced by Tzadic, so always had the latest releases and I'd preview them or just blindly play them on my shows.
Avatar 10:39pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I was just admiring my original Commodore 64 today (re that Ferret Show image)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Rich in Washington:

Does it still work, Kenzo?
Avatar 10:40pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Welllllll kinda sorta not entirely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Rich in Washington:

We had a Commodore 64 at my work and it was in service for many years. It had some special electrical pulse sequencing on it that no one cared to replicate in modern machinery. I think they finally retired it when we got new software engineers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Rich in Washington:

I've had the same job for far too long. I'm like an old Commodore 64.
Avatar 10:43pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

As an original C64, it had the classic fault that the power supply overheated over time (due to Commodore deliberately sealing the thing up with so much extra material to attempt to make it hard to take apart and build a third-party replacement), which led over time to improper power that caused problems to the video chip. It took longer and longer to power up after a while. And during the problem, if I was playing a game using a bitmap, the bitmap would gradually fill up with extra pixels, which would usually alter the gameplay (i.e. if I was playing Randy Glover's Jumpman (from Epyx), those little dots would act as tiny platforms, which could help but more often hurt.
Avatar 10:45pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The C64 has been mostly relegated to prop I pull out when we're writing BASIC programs in the CCS64 emulator, so those of us who haven't already memorized the different keyboard layout know which keys to press (i.e. shift-2 for a double quote)
