Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm chresti:

It was kind of busy today, people asking questions...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm HyperDose:

I prefer people watching to small talk. I feel like you learn more.
Avatar 8:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So - an obvious but interesting thing is how distinct from the U.S.-UK axis of Musics that Jamaican Music was - yet also how stepped in it they were like everybody else...
Avatar 8:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

*steeped dammit...
Avatar 8:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...other passing thots on Jamaica - how much Irish influence there was because Cromwell shipped them there - & how much the roots of HipHop are there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm chresti:

I have this song on a General Trees album.
Avatar 8:50pm northguineahills:

I thought I I was the only one who used the phrase, "nice up the dance"! (yes, I have the Soul Jazz comp of the same name);
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Gary:

NGH!
Avatar 8:52pm northguineahills:

check out Sister Nancy's collabs w/ WFMU's dj /rupture. (saw them live together once).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm chresti:

True Confession, has the same riddm as Kill a Sound, can't think of the toaster's name...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm HyperDose:

Avatar 8:54pm northguineahills:

Avatar 8:56pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 8:57pm northguineahills:

recovering from a caffeine hangover b/c of an interview this 'morn. (I almost never drink coffee).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm chresti:

Drinking coffee is the answer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Michael 98145:

If i didn't have at least one cup, my head would fall apart
Avatar 8:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Irresistible' seems such an easy abused word - but no wonder this type of music went straight round the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm chresti:

More of a singing toaster @8:52
Avatar 8:59pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm chresti:

All a Jamaican has to do is talk and it's music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Gary:

Chresti, you just reminded me of Das Racist's "Fake Patois"
Avatar 9:14pm northguineahills:

@chresti: that's literally how toasting became rapping....
Avatar 9:14pm StringOFperils:

Left me Ban-Lon. Must have been a fave shirt.
Avatar 9:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...does rather make one wonder why one isn't even a little stoned...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm coelacanth∅:

i wonder how much the talking blues were an influence in the formation of toasting
Avatar 9:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

There was the Jazz influence on Ska - of which I have no understanding of the specifics.
Avatar 9:23pm northguineahills:

You never experienced NYE until you do it Jamaica. I stayed at a friend's auntie's place, no tourists. After midnight, everyone comes out church and it's like Carnival. Our friend locked me in his car, as I had wee bit too much of the ganja....(and booze)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm coelacanth∅:

maybe easy swing > swinging calypso > swinging ska > ska
Swag For Life Member 9:27pm zzz:

ooooooh! just tuning in. sounding mighty nice in the headphones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Gary:

zzz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm coelacanth∅:

i can even imagine the madison time (song), which is not considered jazz as far as i know, morphing, ultimately into ska
Swag For Life Member 9:32pm zzz:

this is so good
Swag For Life Member 9:32pm zzz:

Swag For Life Member 9:42pm zzz:

when i was growing up in miami, in the early 90s there was a music video channel called the box. not sure if it was regional or what, but it had chaka demus murder she wrote video on constantly hah
Avatar 9:44pm northguineahills:

@zzz: my gf in late 90s parents live in Ft Lauderdale. I don't remember that channel (b/c I would have been hooked). She's the one I went JA for NYE 2000.

Hey kids, right after this show, stick around for Sam Segal's If You Lose Your Horse! You don't *actually* have to have lost a horse -- or ever had one -- to listen in. Tonight's episode: "Sleep is a Horse Called Philip" wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm WR:

Trinity!!! ya mon!
Avatar 9:48pm northguineahills:

I had a friend in Jacksonville, who played Dillinger's "Cocaine in my Brain" at the Museum of Contemporary Art patron funraiser event. The pearl clutching from the blue-hairs was fun to watch (it was Jacksonville)
Avatar 9:49pm northguineahills:

errr, fundraiser event....
Avatar 9:50pm northguineahills:

Trinity is the best toaster. I-Roy is one of the best producers....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm WR:
