Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Handy Haversack:

Hello, Olivia, Olivians.
Avatar 4:03pm Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

"probability is magic" is one hell of a hot take!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Handy Haversack:

I hated calculus. I think partly out of attitude problems. I just wanted to edit the literary magazine and smoke cigarettes.

Yet now I need to calculate conic sections all the time, and where have my skills all gone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Food Caboose:

Oh man, me too! Loved diff-eq and all the calc I took in HS and college, but prob and stats kicked my ass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Phillippe Bastille:

hey handy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm karlward:

And of course there is "Machine Learning: The High Interest Credit Card of Technical Debt" research.google...
  4:04pm headcleaner:

probability and stats are as real as math gets! but they are definitely quite "dry" compared to more geometry-oriented topics (like calculus)
  4:04pm frankiespells:

statistics is like weather prediction but more....corporate lol

I can't help but pretend I'm a teenage girl in NJ when I'm here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, Phillippe!
Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Mennlinn Rebarts:

I just love Okinawan music!!!!
Avatar 4:08pm Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm steveo:

hi Olivia & raviolios; been listening and liking lots
  4:10pm Marie:

Hey, I'm just loving the tunes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Handy Haversack:

Or at least realize that you are likely to lose money gambling, BBQB JA!

(That said, poker was very good to me Sat. afternoon.)
  4:14pm headcleaner:

@buffalo: interestingly, most successful poker players have only limited understanding of (formal) probability theory. And many are basically mathematically illiterate / allergic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm eºIºk:

If anyone wants to start a WFMU commenter poker Zoom group, I’m in. I’m not very good but I’m enthusiastic. Can we all wear those funny green-shaded hats like on Star Trek: TNG?
Avatar 4:16pm Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

you'd think that would be where most of your knowledge base would come from - understanding the probability of your hand to win, and understanding the mathematically most efficient bet you could make on that hand
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm steveo:

a book that helped me enjoy calculus is "A Tour of the Calculus" by David Berlinski (1995)
Avatar 4:17pm Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

although the whole 'bluffing' thing throws a huge wrench into playing probabilities too heavily... unlike blackjack
  4:17pm headcleaner:

Rather, they get a lot of mileage out of "reading the room" (knowing their opponents, and their gut instincts as to whether they are bluffing in a given moment). And on lengthy personal data trail on how they handled various corner cases in the game (which are fiendishly complex). But it's much more "muscle memory" -based than math-based.
  4:18pm headcleaner:

EIK - "not very good, but enthusiastic" is exactly the kind of opponents successful poker players love to have :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Handy Haversack:

The new big thing in poker is game-theory optimal play, which is basically "if you always do the exact right thing for the specific situation, you'll win! Now memorize the following billion combinations."

But I think most successful poker players of the last twenty years have a pretty good knowledge of odds and probability.

Certainly, you can make it work more in Limit than No Limit. But then, Limit is boring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm milkis:

I’m a simple man. I hear Okinawan music in the radio, I turn it up.
  4:21pm Marie:

I am not sure why but i love a lot of japanese music an find their culture very interesting. i think partially because they tend to be animists and thus maybe more spiritually oriented? Like everything is alive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm coelacanth∅:

^ with milkis on that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm joe mulligan:

that PAN compilation is all hits! great show today Olivia
  4:25pm headcleaner:

Poker is definitely a fascinating game (mathematically and psychologically). But ultimately a huge, festering rabbit hole (in both senses) and in recent years, has become highly developed and professionalized (such that there's now a very considerable learning curve to catch up just not to get creamed... let alone gain lucrative skills in it)
  4:26pm headcleaner:

All things considered, I'd rather devote that energy to other pursuits (like learning Japanese)
Avatar 4:28pm Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

@marie thousands of years of taoist / buddhist / shinto influence will have that effect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm coelacanth∅:

me too, but some folks make a good living playing poker
  4:29pm Micheal:

Love this Star Gazing - thanks, Olivia!
  4:30pm Marie:

@Josh--yeah, makes sense. Were those dolphins?
Avatar 4:31pm Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

hell if i know!
  4:31pm Marie:

@Josh--maybe I'l start a taoist/buddhist/shinto movement here in the US of A! I could start in New Jersey
  4:34pm Yes:

😎
Avatar 4:35pm Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

@marie hah. if you are actually interested, there are several authentic zen centers in the NYC area, not so sure about Jersey. i don't know much about taoism and shintoism but i would think those have a bit more of a language and culture barrier. most Zen centers these days tend to be run by (white) Americans.
  4:35pm headcleaner:

some folks make good living at poker, but (for that to happen) there hast to be a "silent majority" of players who are at best borderline, and most likely steadily losing slightly. As well as a constant stream of "marks" coming into the game and quickly washing out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Phillippe Bastille:

They say if you sit in on a game and can't figure out who the worst player is it is probably you. Or, in my case, it's always me
  4:41pm headcleaner:

There was one famous player who wrote about this a few years ago - something to the effect of how the game became a "black hole" to him once he realized how, in order for him to be raking in all that other dough... scores and scores of other (typically lonely men) were running their lives into the ground
  4:45pm headcleaner:

One has to remember that, at the end of the day, the game of poker doesn't create -anything- in the form of tangible wealth of utility (and in fact consumes a considerable amount of energy and resources from everyone involved). So in that sense it's even worse than Bitcoin (which at least enables money laundering as a form of "utility")
  4:45pm Krys O:

oh those Casiotones...
  4:47pm Marie:

Hey Josh, neato and interesting. I actually consider myself more of a Shin Buddhist and really like this temple on the upper west side called the New York Buddhist Church. I like their services, which are also online, and the people are really nice.

  5:08pm JBoogie:

this green is nice because now I know what it's like to have glaucoma.
  5:10pm headcleaner:

@stanley - that's my strategy basically - I've come to intensely dislike being hungover, and that state of being "drunk" that inevitably leads to it. Although I enjoy and respect fermented substances.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm coelacanth∅:

i don't think it's green yellow; i think it's yellow green (green with extra yellow)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm steveo:

There's a yellow-green in her hair, but it doesn't seem real enough. It seems like she has just been messing with her hair a little.

The green on the back of her neck is an unnatural green that doesn't belong with her yellow hair.
  5:16pm JBoogie:

it's almost a You Can't Do That On Television Green, but more bodega green
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Phillippe Bastille:

@stanley I got my lifetime supply out of the way a few decades early. Gotta leave some for others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Stanley:

headcleaner: you have, similarly, reached a true state of wisdom. In fact, I know my limits down to the milliltre. My limit is set at 100 ml of pure alcohol and of a evening of 'debauchery' I often pull out my (wait for it).... calculator to check on my current level. (There is a 20 ml 'extra' allowed if it's been a long eveing and lots of food has been devoured.
