  1:59pm
Listener Robert:

Thanks for explaining the radio play, Stork. I'd figured it to be a romantic comedy, possibly one of a series, wherein that scene was set up by a previous phone call wherein the lady wanted to go dancing and the man didn't, and then he was being funny, albeit in an "idiot" way, by calling back and reversing his position in the argument.

You got it, LR! Just so. The broadness of the comedy makes it unecessary to provide any context, and Powell was really good at this character. You can just see the smirk under the pencil moustache.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
fred:

meant *worse*
  2:11pm
Listener Robert:

I can indeed "hear" the smirk. He was playing a type I know all too well, and the lady was playing the type of the one forever bemused by, and yet tolerant of, her boyfriend. I can hear the eyeroll, sigh, and groan after they say goodbye. But that gives them a chance to almost witness a murder, and then solve it anyway. I don't know if the lady part was by Myrna Loy, but they're ripping off the characters regardless.

Googling turns up "The Murder in the Stork Club", a novella by Vera Caspary first published in 1946 under the title "The Lady in Mink", and a 1950 Philco Television Playhouse, "Murder at the Stork Club", adapted from it. Seems to be distinct from the radio play, which didn't turn up but had different character names.

Wow, I was only familiar with the Stones version of "Cry to Me." This Freddie Scott version is THE one, though, isn't it? Wow, it's so quiet and powerful. Damn!

Freddie Scott was sweet but the Betty Harris "Cry to Me" is the one, I reckon.

A friend/neighbor rented a nearby, unused movie theater, brought a DVD, and, and 10 of us "went to the movies" (popcorn includes). Was fun!
