Your tribute to Allison Steele is most appreciated. Allison was an FM Stereo icon to this listener as an adolescent during the 1960s. Her signoff began with " Quittin' time; gotta go..." Your on-air voice and persona are of equal caliber with The Night Bird. Thank you for your work.
  12:29am JBoogie:

@Pasquale you should check out the nightly tribute to Allison on the r n S stream... every night! it's a bit odd, but she picks some great tracks

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27am Tome:

munich Olympics I am thinking now ,,,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27am Scott67:

I cannot help but stop and look at the inherent lack.
A lack is intrinsic. a lack is inbuilt,
a lack is integral, however.
One afternoon I said to myself,
"Why isn't the paucity more absolute?"
Does the paucity make you shiver?
does it?
The omission is not little!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27am Aitch:

Nirvana unplugged shows just how good the songs actually are IMO
  1:28am JBoogie:

oh yeah....
  1:28am JBoogie:

I agree Aitch... but it's still reeeeeeally cheesy IMO. MTV...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28am coelacanth☯:

yeah, I know of the other nirvana.

Zoe, I'm gonna share that Bowie chopped and screwed version. It literally sounded like cumbia rebajada. She loves Bowie and cumbia rebajada (one of many reasons we connected), and everything else wfmu related.... (Mexico 2008).
  1:30am JBoogie:

I know the dude that killed Kurt
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30am Scott67:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32am coelacanth☯:

Kurt was seriously into music, with a lot of sophistication and knowledge beyond that of his peers. his name-dropping was his way of tribute, in the way he knew how
  1:32am JBoogie:

oh, I know... but the guy was still a professionally paid poser by that point.
Avatar 1:33am northguineahills:

what coel said....
  1:33am JBoogie:

one of Kurt's favorite bands was Aerosmith.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34am coelacanth☯:

i've never looked at it that way JB
  1:34am Mark:

Tome @ 1:27 The Munich Olympics massacre was September 1972 and I think the mic break recording was September

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37am Tome:

@Mark that time remember my older cousin listening to last night WNEW FM but sure do remember that day also (((
Avatar 1:38am northguineahills:

(I wasn't even a glimmer in either of parents' eyes at the time, but I'm a history and music dork). (hence why I'm here).
  1:39am JBoogie:

I was 17 when he died. You wouldn't believe how inescapable that godawful Unplugged album was on the radio when ht shit went down.
  1:40am JBoogie:

I remember hearing "Dumb" on the radio while driving with my girlfriend... who paused briefly before changing the station just at the end of "Dumb" and said "I think you're dumb too, you dead idiot" lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40am Scott67:

Owl is on some serious rabid rodent snacks tonight. Here's another sample from her perch.

I cannot help but stop and look at human creatures.
Do creatures make you shiver?
do they?
How happy are scaly reptiles!
Down, down, down into the darkness of the reptiles,
Gently they go - the scurfy, the scaled, the lepidote.
When I think of rodents, I see a pet step.
Now wacky is just the thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40am diciassette:

It was a weird time, that time.
  1:41am JBoogie:

It felt like the Hotel California of the early 90s.
  1:41am JBoogie:

punks did NOT like Nirvana one bit....
Avatar 1:43am northguineahills:

@JBoogie: I was on my way to a church campout when my friend's younger (who was and still is totally xtian) sister told me Kurt had died. My friend and I couldn't believe she heard the news before us. (I was also 17)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44am coelacanth☯:

there were no punks in 1994!

(except old ones)
  1:44am JBoogie:

It was pretty heavy shit, but... I was definitely at an age and in a phase where I really didn't care. Nirvana was total butt rock by 94
  1:45am JBoogie:

uhhhhh, coel... you are so so so wrong about that
Avatar 1:45am northguineahills:

@JBoogie: i was straight edge in HS, but by my senior year in HS, I got into shoegaze, nirvana, jazz, and ambient... (I've never accepted social labels).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45am Paulo AD:

I had a ticket to see nirvana when i was 14, and well...I didnt get to see them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46am coelacanth☯:

i remember how ubiquitous that album was, for people who listened to commercial media and deserved it.
that doesn't diminish any merits the music has.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46am diciassette:

If punk broke in '91 how could there be any punks in '94?
  1:47am JBoogie:

because "punk broke" in 91 according to the David Geffen company. the underground was thriving by 94
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47am coelacanth☯:

were there any punk bands? (besides nirvana, 3 years earlier)
Avatar 1:48am northguineahills:

@Paolo: Nirvana played at a club I was hanging out at Jax Beach. I had no idea who they were (I was 16). So, I just hung out on the beach smoking cigareetes. It was $5 cover, and the place had maybe 25 people there. I still kick myself for not going inside (already paid cover).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am diciassette:

I'm going to hide under the blankets now!
  1:48am JBoogie:

what a silly silly question. ever hear of Maximum Rock n Roll? pick up any random issue from 94 and you'll get your answer
Avatar 1:49am northguineahills:

The Ex have always been punk, no matter your definition of what punk should be....
  1:49am JBoogie:

punk isn't a style of music and never was
  1:49am JBoogie:

remember the 90s were also the decade of Fugazi
  1:50am JBoogie:

and Olympia.. Kill Rock Stars. K... etc....
Avatar 1:50am northguineahills:

JBoogie gets it...

(I also saw Fugazi in the late 90s)
  1:50am JBoogie:

Nirvana really muddied the waters of perception on that one
Avatar 1:50am northguineahills:

omg, Bikini Kill was awesome!
  1:51am JBoogie:

I saw Fugazi more times than I can count, both in the US and overseas...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51am diciassette:

Somebody had some regrets for getting mixed up with Butch Vig?
  1:51am JBoogie:

Can't stand Bikini Kill, but Unwound were one of the most important bands of the 90s, easliy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51am Scott67:

There also were & still are Bands other than American. Who kick the corporate Punk Brand in the balls. And go their own way, that is the essence of Punk ethos.
  1:52am JBoogie:

exactly Scott!
Avatar 1:52am northguineahills:

I had a friend who was rec representive for Kill Rock Stars, and did a night at the Chelsea Hotel in the 2000s. She had me dj b/tn band sets...
  1:53am Brogan:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53am coelacanth☯:

yeah definitely some good oz punk in the 90s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53am Ike:

Anybody ever do punkgaze? Ambient punk? Salsa punk?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53am diciassette:

Feedtime much, Sikorsky 67?
  1:53am JBoogie:

KRS was actually formed for the express purpose of putting out the first Unwound 7"... pretty much at the time Nirvana was about to braak. the parallels between those two bands are unreal... and Unwound is soooooo much more visonary and important than Nirvana will ever be IMO
  1:53am JBoogie:

@Ike... I mean, Unwound is all of that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54am coelacanth☯:

wasn't called "punk" but whatever. it's a stupid term anyway, and goes back before the 60s
  1:54am JBoogie:

The Saints are from Oz... diff decade but... mic. drop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54am Scott67:

Hahaha! diciassette.👍😎
Avatar 1:55am northguineahills:

@Ike: Yes, I have examples of shoegaze punk and mexi-punk, but, my brain is shutting down. I'll have to get back to you once I reboot it.
Avatar 1:56am northguineahills:

I agree about that JBoogie, about Unwound....(also awesome live).
  1:57am JBoogie:

*for the record, I really do love Nirvana but they have very little to do with punk for me. they were never very DIY, and their sound is way more informed by metal and pop than anything else. I just intensely dislike Unplugged, as mentioned. it's the Frampton Comes Alive of my generation. but yeah, they're a good radio band. before that, a good Melvins tribute
  1:58am JBoogie:

I had tx to see unwound on 9/11... at the Middle East. Arab on Radar were opening. no joke... obvsly cancelled. heavy day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59am coelacanth☯:

so obviously it wouldn't be fashionable for "punks" to like nirvana after they broke into mainstream (opening the doors for those very "punks")
it doesn't matter what "the punks" thought, or claimed.
Avatar 2:00am northguineahills:

Considering the word 'punk' goes back to the 17th c, and it only came into the meaning as we know it as no good person, in the early 20th c, by 50s, even rockbillies called themselves punks as a badge of honor.
  2:01am JBoogie:

re: Bikini Kill... when you're charging 150-200 bucks for your reunion show at the Hollywood Palladium 20 plus years after you were relevant, you are no longer allowed to utter the word "punk" ever again. Kathleen Hanna has lways been an opportunist clown. I remember her banning guys from coming into shows at one point... great look!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01am coelacanth☯:

before being overproduced nirvana was definitely "punk" and - were a band, so, "diy".
  2:01am JBoogie:

I'm not sure punks really liked Nirvana before they broke either. they were a Sub Pop band.
Avatar 2:02am northguineahills:

I had tix to see Acid Mothers Temple the Friday after 9/11. 5 years later, they couldn't get their visa, finally, in 2010, I finally saw them live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03am coelacanth☯:

sub pop was acceptable to all but the most pretentious, at that time
  2:04am JBoogie:

i remember... it was definitely more of a "college radio" label or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04am diciassette:

I was matador this, matador that (but pretty much a bogan)
  2:04am JBoogie:

i really like a lot of old sub pop stuff though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04am coelacanth☯:

i was late coming to matador...probably via Liz Phair
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05am diciassette:

I would give my left shoe for a Matador newsletter from 1995
  2:05am JBoogie:

i feel sub pop kinda picked up where SST was leaving off... or taking cues. lots and lots of hair
Avatar 2:05am northguineahills:

@JBoogie: I saw JD (Le Tigre) was djing at a lesbian club. Being cis straight male, I knew I couldn't get in. So, I asked my lesbian friends to go w/ me. I wasn't let in. But after my friends vetted me for 10 minutes, I was let in (I told the bouncer, I'm just here for the music). I was the only male there. JD was awesome, and talked to her.
  2:06am JBoogie:

that sounds so weird.
Avatar 2:07am northguineahills:

@JBoogie: I hung out w/ them every other weekend, and they came to my dj sets. They were artists and musicians, and knew I was harmless.
  2:08am JBoogie:

yeah I remember lots of Kathleen Hanna stuff like that, even after BK... with le Tigre... but not specifics. wouldn't fly these days at all. she'd be cancelled.

of course, it's white people doing this too...
Avatar 2:11am northguineahills:

I saw an article today that there are only 16 official lesbian bars left in the US,

Kathleen Hannah said something to Courtney Love one time that made her just up and clock her. Scorpios!
  2:13am JBoogie:

how many official gay bars? i'm a little confused. are they all "nonbinary" bars now? or?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13am coelacanth☯:

ngh i wouldn't want to be there, personally.
a friend wanted me to come with her to see Cat Power at some lesbian club, c.1997. she thought i'd get in... but i couldn't imagine having a good time amongst a bunch of judgemental sexists.
Avatar 2:14am northguineahills:

There was a time, where LGBQ+ people literally needed a safe place to hang out and meet like-minded people. I grew up (HS) in the Deep South and most of my friends were gay and went to gay bars just for decent culture.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14am diciassette:

Say!
  2:15am JBoogie:

i understand gay bars and their history very well. just confused about the "official" thing. like a plaque?
  2:15am JBoogie:

and why are they endangered? what a bummer
Avatar 2:16am northguineahills:

@coel: uh, that night (2004), I had an amazing time, but I had 5 friends around me, they all protected and explained why I was there I was harmless. By the end of the night, i was on first-name basis w/ the bartender. (I'm a good chameleon).
Avatar 2:17am northguineahills:

@JBoogie: partially, b/c of the pandemic, and b/c the lack of stigma of lesbians in most parts of the country. So, you can be anybody and go to most place today, and no one cares (rural South does not apply).
  2:17am JBoogie:

these days couldn't you just insist that you identfy as woman and anyoen who challenges you, declare as the true oppressor? send out a tweet and get the squad there to protest in 15 minutes
  2:18am JBoogie:

ah ok that makes sense now
Avatar 2:19am northguineahills:

Meow Mix (the bar I mentioned), on E Houston, closed in 2010. It was a hipster cafe the last I saw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19am coelacanth☯:

i understand, ngh. i wouldn't have though. i only had one friend with me and she's very shy.
i probably would've had to defend my presence all evening. not fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19am eºIºk:

Even before the pandemic, my understanding is gay bars are getting rare because of the huge success of gay dating apps, at least from what I’ve heard Dan Savage say.
Avatar 2:19am northguineahills:

Holy shit, Fairuz! Awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20am coelacanth☯:

JB @ 217 exactly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21am coelacanth☯:

yes meow mix was were Cat Power was playing too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21am coelacanth☯:

hey Zoe what do YOU think?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22am Ike:

Love the sounds, thanks Zoe.
  2:22am JBoogie:

not a peep!
Avatar 2:22am northguineahills:

@Ike: in the last decade and a half, most of my gay friends just go to any other bar/club. No one cares anymore. That said. My bros (who are GOPers), have a friend that is gay and takes us to one of two gay bars left in Orlando before each soccer game. (It's across the street from the stadium).
Avatar 2:23am northguineahills:

weird, coel! I used to go there afterwards as the bouncers knew who I was. (Not sure if it would of worked in 1997)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24am coelacanth☯:

i can say that "my" bar is a "safe space" for ...everyone; and aggressively (occasionally to a fault) enforced. so it's understandable that the necessity for a "gay bar" isn't so great.
Avatar 2:25am northguineahills:

heck, in Gainesville, I found a gay redneck bar on the outskirts of town. Friendly place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25am diciassette:

Bars are certainly territorial (sometimes quite out of necessity)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26am diciassette:

It's wonderful when you can go into a space that's not your own and explore, though
Avatar 2:27am northguineahills:

Just like I seek out ethnic bars, I seek out redneck bars. Most of the redneck bars are racist, but the gay redneck bar was awesome.

When I was 17 we played the dumb cassette with the airplane tail one it all the time/everywhere
Avatar 2:28am northguineahills:

For my bday one year, I went to a Saudi bar (not an oxymoron, apparently).
  2:30am JBoogie:

I guess Saudis are sorta like Muslims but without the Islam
  2:35am JBoogie:

we have a "speakeasy" bar here in town that's basically for locals only. how do i know? i got thrown out for having long hair. the kicker? the owner is the goddamn mayor of this town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38am coelacanth☯:

you could print up some flyers for toga parties at that address, over and over
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39am diciassette:

In the Mission there was once a wonderful bar called El Tin Tan, where it was assumed you didn't speak English, but it wasn't a big deal if you were a little slow

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43am coelacanth☯:

i like your enthusiasm Scott67
  2:43am JBoogie:

Keep it positive coelacanth☯
  2:45am JBoogie:

i'm stoned now... and someone way back mentioned shoegaze and we were talking about Sub Pop... Love Battery... is a band that I really overlooked back then. Dayglo is a really amazing record. sounds more British than American. Reminds me of Swervedriver a lot. Also, should be mentioned what a massive influence Dinosaur Jr and J Mascis was on the entire shoegaze genre via MBV. You can really hear it on those early Dinosaur rekkids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46am coelacanth☯:

i need to get on this next cloud
Thanks Zoe! hopefully you don't hate me too much now
g'night y'all
  2:46am JBoogie:

Jesus and Mary Chain too obvsly.. but
Avatar 2:46am northguineahills:

I know that band, JBoogie: Thanks Zoe, off at the end of your set....
  2:47am JBoogie:

gnite you two. get home safe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48am diciassette:

"J. Mascis is God" (SPIN cover I took seriously)
  2:49am JBoogie:

I remember just thinking he was Tiny Tim
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49am Paulo AD:

Man this morning is buuuussssyyyyyy. I've missed hanging out
  2:51am JBoogie:

J is amazing though, seriously. Fortunate enough to have played some shows with him many years ago, mutual friends, very supportive of my band. And yeah, he's a total G (for guitar).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51am diciassette:

I would have met him, once, but he's SO quiet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53am Scott67:

G'night coel.✌😎
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54am Scott67:

Bloody rude work Paulo!
  2:55am JBoogie:

Dinosaur were prolly more "my thing" than Nirvana back then, due to their proximity to skateboarding... and being from Massachusetts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56am diciassette:

Drop Nineteens much? :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57am Paulo AD:

Super rude
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59am Scott67:
