"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am YETI BOB:

Indeed I did! It has a lot of problems, being an older car, but I hope it makes it to the west coast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am (Murakami Whywolf))):

Very mixed feelings about Leary. Very much 'a man of parts'—you don't get through West Point and to a research position at Harvard on looks (alone)—but he set serious psychedelic research back decades and had theories of mind and of space migration he promulgated on very little evidence. I see him as a very sincere con-man, that is he always conned himself first, but still a con artist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am YETI BOB:

@mace: I love fried catfish, one of my favorite meals
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Phillippe Bastille:

mace I have! They are a pain to clean, but tasty. They can pick up the flavor of where they live, though, so they can taste a bit muddy at times (at least that's been my experience). I'm going to try smoking the next batch and make a dip. YB is right, fried is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am (((Murakami Whywolf):

mace:
I basically hate fish, but I once got some fried catfish I could eat and keep-down, I recall the flavour as mild and the texture very flaky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am YETI BOB:

((MW)) I know a lot of folks have issues with Leary but he (like John Lennon) is a hero to me. Other "serious" researchers were trying to act as gatekeepers to the psychedelic domain, while Leary was trying to "Unscrew the locks from the doors! Unscrew the doors themselves from their jambs!" (Whitman)
  9:18am Glistener MW:

<3 amen, Yeti Bob.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Phillippe Bastille:

YB I'm in the same boat. My son just grabbed me one at auction, 2013 with 125k miles. Crazy how much they depreciate. My 2004 suburban was literally coming apart in my hands (3 of the armrests have come off while closing doors, for example) so I wanted something that would stay intact. The Benz was quite a bit cheaper than a Chevy Tahoe for the same year.
Avatar 9:19am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(Murakami Whywolf)) I'd mostly agree. Leary became another NewAge lecture circuit guy in white shoes. Libertarians... Kind of think of Leary as the Hefner or Disney of LSD. But do also see him as caught up in the whole pageant of the inevitable between Psychedelics & the Establishment. Yerknow it had to be somebody & it was him. His intelligence & observation & articulation can't be disregarded wholesale...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Phillippe Bastille:

Monkfish are great -- kinda lobsterish. I did not realize how quickly they shrink up if you overcook them a little bit, however -- left me kinda of embarrassed when I baked some for company and wound up with the worlds tiniest portions

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Threemoons:

Oooh, a foodie convo! Fish for Friday! Yes, catfish and carp both can pick up the taste of where they were caught--In Ashkenazi cooking, carp usually has some kind of vinegar or sweet and sour treatment if the fish is being served as-is, or it's part of gefilte fish. FWIW I LOVE fish done right. Monkfish is almost like lobster and needs gentle treatment. If I had to have only one kind of fish, it would be the very small silver butterfish--sustainable, healthy--and very tasty. I just head and gut them, slash each side 3x, shake with seasoned coarse cornmeal, and shallow-fry. Great hot or cold. You eat the bones; very good source of calcium. I like to slap a few of them, cold, onto a roll with slaw or tomatoes and mayo or whatever; to me that's a perfect fish fry.
Avatar 9:30am mace:

It's crazy how many varieties of mushroom are supposed to mimic some meats, like lobster mushrooms, and a few others that taste like chicken

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Threemoons:

My other fave is very tiny baby octopus. A zillion years ago when I went to law school in DC, back when wooly mammoths still made their stately migration along the frozen Potomac, the big outdoor fish market in DC would have tiny 1" baby octopi, fresh. I would buy a pound for like $2, rinse them at home, put em on ice, and eat them raw dipped in salt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am YETI BOB:

@HH: Vegetarian is the way to go, I did it for decades. My cardiologist suggested I started eating fish and I took the advice (also I like oysters and sushi a lot, and my wife's fried catfish, so it didn't take to much persuasion)

@YetiBob I am trying to Eat More Plants. And, thankfully, I have access to regeneratively-farmed meat--organ meat from healthy animals is amazingly good for you.

The only time I've enjoyed octopus is in takoyaki. The texture is too knuckly for me, but I see the appeal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Phillippe Bastille:

@threemoons I had what I refered to as a pet carp two years back. He liked to hang out in the shade next to the pier. Probably a half dozen times I'd be sitting there fishing and I'd look down and he was right beside me, like a faithful dog. No sign of him last year.

@Yeti was it you who gave me advice on making sauerkraut? After 2 fails I've succeeded and now have tasty kraut daily.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Threemoons:

When I was a very little girl I would go fishing with my Mom and Dad at either a local lake (rented rowboat) or the local reservoir. At the latter, guys who were Serious Fishermen would be pulling out these ENORMOUS carp--the ranger's lodge/permit station had tons of photos of some 3' long and larger monsters. We never got lucky that way but we did sometimes get some good freshwater striped lake perch that were big enough to bother with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am (Murakami Whywolf))):

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:
Between C.I.A., Wasson, and Clare Booth Luce, psychedelics _started_ as very Establishment, people who had enough of a classical education to know about the Eleusinean Mysteries that were open only to the élite and wanted something similar.

I may judge Leary harshly because I'm a scientist and Leary always claimed to be, and certainly wanted the imprimatur of SCIENCE and the respect that gets, at least in some quarters even as he got more and more slip-shod in his methods, especially over-generalising from his particular seminary/West Point/Harvard case and tilting his pronouncements toward the ones that would get him more young 'tail'. And, of course, there was his fatal flaw, rooted in the most unscientific habit of all: believing the World was the way he wanted it to be.

—which is why I wrote 'harshly' and not 'over-harshly'. I don't dismiss him, but I think he's closer to Joyce or Burroughs than (say) Shulgin.

YETI BOB:
There were too many locks, but I'll use an analogy: official sexual morés in the early 1960s were terrible and terribly restrictive, but I know of at least one California high school in the 1970s where O(10) teachers were having sex with students. In software it is a given that fixing a bug can allow things to proceed far enough to trigger a much worse bug, as I learned when I fixed something 'small' just before shipping and would've wrecked the product if it hadn't been caught.

@threemoons could be, but there's not a lot of fishing in our river. Not an easy way in, and the Chesapeake is just a couple 100 yards away. Enough to keep me busy with panfish, but the big ones are in the bay

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Krys O.:

For several years, a group of Facebook friends would meet up for a Chinese banquet in Chinatown NYC. The organizer spoke Chinese and we would have about 10-12 courses of Chinese delicacies like jellyfish, etc. Even though I had eaten things like tripe as a kid, it was still extremely weird. I had a vegan diet about ten years ago. I eat eggs, dairy and fish and occasionally poultry, mostly plant-based though now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Phillippe Bastille:

@threemoons where I used to live I did some kayak fishing in a reservoir and snagged a pretty large carp that actually pulled the kayak, like some crazy cartoon. Never did boat him, but did see him when he rolled and broke the line
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Krys O.:

LOL, mace!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Threemoons:

I actually once donated a totally dead banger of a car to them, btw. When I was in HS/college I went through a series of very cheap American-made (ie generic parts) very body-damaged used cars because it was all I could afford....anyway I had an old klunker whose starter kept consistently dying and they sent around 2 Orthodox guys with a flatbed to get it off of Mom's driveway. Got a $2K tax writeoff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Phillippe Bastille:

@Krys O I still like tripe more than I should...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Threemoons:

@Phillippe wild! Yeah, you would see really big guys breaching the water in the middle of the reservoir; I can believe it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Handy Haversack:

Wait, mace, wow, just saw your profile! You work at Dwarven Forge? Are you in Bushwick? How's Stefan doing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Threemoons:

I recently got a hold of some regeneratively farmed cow tongue, pig tongue, turkey liver, and pig kidneys. All amazing. The kidneys take some prep when they are that big--there's a reason why they test human drugs on pigs--but once prepped and given a soak in milk they cook up wonderfully.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am YETI BOB:

MW - re: Leary - thanks for that well-thought out reply. Your points are all valid - I'm a scientist too, at least when I'm wearing that hat, so I'm aware of his flaws - but Leary was an important figure in my development - as were Joyce and Burroughs, and not so much Shulgin, even though of course Shulgin was the better scientist!

Fun fact: I grew up eating chopped liver. At Thanksgiving, the liver in the roasting pan was a treat. Then I took a semester of FDA law as an elective and found out that ONE turkey liver has an entire clinical dose of DES in it. So that was it for frequent chopped liver in our house; now it's a less than once a year thing.

I have always loved that DF is based in Brooklyn, where no one has an apt. large enough to use the product! But we gamed at Stefan's a few times and always had a couple of beers together at GaryCon. I believe I've heard your childhood varietals called 'butcher‘s blend'. ('Butler‘s blend' is a mix of whatever teas you've got hanging around, o.k. usually if iced.)

I really like dim sum's book tripe dish (ba yeh, 'hundred leaves') made with a lot of ginger and usually some chilis and sometimes like book tripe with curry and taro or potato.

I've had honeycomb tripe that I just could not eat, and that's rare for me, though chitlins (a misspelling, I think) also push it. Foot's the same for me.

I do think that if you're going to have a cow killed you ought to eat as much of it as you can.

@Mace Tongue: To prep: Rinse and boil in saltwater seasoned with a handful of peppercorns and a few bay leaves. Simmer until carving fork goes into the root end easily. When done, while still hot, used a clean lint free towel or similar to hold the hot tongue and cut/peel off the tough outer skin. Comes right off. Slice and serve hot or cold. Does NOT taste salty when cooled off. Usually served with onions and mustard. Delicious. Some butchers also sell smoked tongue which is amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Phillippe Bastille:

If I remember correctly the tongue was really tough, And yeah, the hairs were still on it so yikes if you aren't ready for that vision. I could never eat the brains though. My dad lived brains and eggs for breakfast. No thanks

My Nordic Dad, may he rest in peace, used to sometimes go eel fishing at night with a flashlight--they come right up. Locals would home-hot-smoke them using water-soaked copies of the Sunday Times. Home smoked eel is delicious cold; better than whitefish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Krys O.:

From kindergarten to 5th grade, we lived down the street from a butcher and I had to walk past on my way to school. They'd have chickens displayed in the windows with their feet touching the panes. I also remember the rendering truck would come by to pick up bones. This was also the time of DDT trucks driving through the neighborhood.

@threemoons fascinating. I'll have to get some when I see it's available. I tried frog for the first time this past year and that was salty, which I maybe should have guessed. It was from a street vendor, though, so maybe if it's prepared well it isn't so?

one time long ago in high school, I was feeling brave at the taco truck & ordered lengua & sesos tacos. They made the tongue taco first—chunk of tongue pulled out & chopped fine—looked good. for the next one they pulled out what looked like half a calf brain, sliced off a chunk, and chopped it up. It was pretty gnarly, but not too bad with the extra-hot salsa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Phillippe Bastille:

Took me years to want to eat eels. When I was a wee lad, several of my uncles would go fishing for eels at a place called Bloody Pond. I remember once my grandmother was cooking them in a big pot and she scooped a bunch of them out with a ladle to check their doneness. It looked like a bunch of snakes coming out of a pot of boiling water, draped over the handle and dangling over the water. I absolutely had nightmares after that.

It is nice being able to take WFMU in the car, and be able to keep in touch with work colleagues when I'm not home (it gives me freedom to roam around during the day), but it's definitely the Devil's bargain and you are on the right side, so stay golden!

@ami, most of the FM pirates around here have really disappointing taste in music. There used to be an occasionally slightly funny Hasidic pirate called J-Root but they seem to have gone legal now, i.e. online only. And once I heard one Caribbean church pirate invite people to call in and sing gospel over the air which was kind of cool. I wonder if I still have a recording of that somewhere. But mostly it’s crap.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Phillippe Bastille:

YouTube thinks I love Courtney Barnett. No matter what artist mix I select, I get a Courtney Barnett song about half a dozen songs in. Angel Olsen? Pearl Harbor and the Explosions? 10CC? All roads lead to Courtney Barnett. Pick a female Australian singer like Alex Lahey or Julia Jacklin and it's maybe 4 songs in...
Avatar 11:02am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh geez, Wallace Roney died a year ago. Derr. Sorry...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am McGroovey:

@philippe I avoid that problem by only listening to music on WFMU (and my own records). Though I do like Courtney Barnett, so your particular problem wouldn't be a problem for me, if I ever used Spotify, which I never have, because WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Phillippe Bastille:

@McGroovey agreed. I'd say 95% of my music listening is fmu. Some days though you just gotta hear a buncha stuff from a favorite artist.
