With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm alanr:

freaky moment. I have been writing down my life story (just for me). And was trying to recall a moment when I was in Chicago in 1968 at a record store with my cousin listening to a old blues singer. I figured out it was the famous Record Mart and probably Big Joe Williams. While typing out my memory, you chose to play Elmore James as my memory soundtrack. Life does that sometimes. Very affirming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm coelacanth∅:

(of course i was kidding about the bodies; but they do have substantial bases -"torsos")

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Doug Schulkind:

As a wee drum lad, I played with Jake Hanna "Regal Tip" sticks and practiced rudiments from a Jake Hanna book. So, yeah, important figure for me.
Avatar 12:59pm Marco Esquandolas:

Lucky me. My mother, was loved jazz, got tickets to see a concert in Cleveland (hometown) in 1980(?) and she and I saw Joe Pass, Oscar Peterson and Count Basie, if my memory serves me well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm doctorjazz:

Pass often played solo, which is not unheard of for guitar players, but players who perform solo usually have some finger style technique, to be able to keep a bass line with a thumb, chord and/or melody with the other fingers. Pass was unique in just using his pick, alternating chords, melody, and being completely convincing at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm chresti:

Have a yabba dabba doo time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Michael 98145:

Yes! Go!
Avatar 1:08pm Marco Esquandolas:

@drJazz- thanks did not know that. So cool
Avatar 1:08pm Stork:

Pass cut his picks in half lengthwise and used just the bottom half - so he could be EVEN faster.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm chresti:

Hi Michael!
Avatar 1:41pm Stork:

Do you mean the soundtrack, or a film, doc?
Avatar 1:41pm Stork:

Michael 98143: :)))
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm doctorjazz:

Either would be nice, very curious (film of the South African version would bee amazing, but I don't think it's posted)
Avatar 1:44pm Stork:

Seems like it's due for a remake - as a live musical it would be awesome. Here's to big expensive operas playing to packed houses again!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm doctorjazz:

South African jazz is quite amazing. I've been obsessed with Abdullah Ibrahim for ages, but not up on the others playing it, great stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm fred:

@doctorjazz; have you gone through all the stuff you won on Doug's show yet? That looked like a treasure trove (space friendly too)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Doug Schulkind:

The King Kong musical is hugely important in the history of South African music. When the show went on tour to London, it became a vehicle that transported many of the greatest artists out of apartheid hell into exile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm doctorjazz:

@Fred, I'm excited about downloading all that great music! I had major computer mishaps, though, computer crashed, external hard drives acting up, hoping a repair person gets the PC working again (he's a very slow worker). In the meantime, had to get a laptop for work, likely will use it to download the Matsuli music soon.

@doctorjazz: I'm a bug-writer by trade, and I hate computers, though they feed me I guess
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm Doug Schulkind:

The apartheid authorities didn't censor King Kong. In their estimation, it was a story about a big black brute with a drinking problem who gets his due punishment. Black South African theatre and music is filled with examples of performances whose messages of black pride and liberation went right over the heads of the government (which tightly controlled everything).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Threemoons:

Hey all! Finally joining in....got a radical new haircut and color yesterday after not having a cut since August.....
Avatar 1:58pm Stork:

Hi Threemoons! We are picturing your do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Threemoons:

Still wasn't able to visit family for Passover and Easter, but glad to get out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm doctorjazz:

Maesha reminds me a lot of Abdullah Ibrahim...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Threemoons:

@Stork cut-wise, think of Liza Minelli in Cabaret. My natural color is a very dark ash blonde; got a major amount of highlights/rise with a very dark blue-grey that has this sort of shimmer to it....making the most of working from home for the forseeable future....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm doctorjazz:

We did have my Brother-in-law over for the Seders last weekend, it was so nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm adamdoesit:

Great show today, barkeep. Ground-down blues, gentlemanly guitar jazz, and Masakela to the max. I'm quietly grooving to every note.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm adamdoesit:

@Doug, that's fascinating about King Kong. Makes it sound like a South African "To Be or Not to Be."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm doctorjazz:

Masekela had a bit of an easy listening rep, obviously undeserved...
Avatar 2:04pm northguineahills:

awake again! Hugh Maskela! Ahhh, Moai for Easter, I get it!
Avatar 2:04pm Stork:

Thanks adamdoesit! I'm in a 6-stringy mood today, for sure.
Avatar 2:05pm Stork:

Well, a stringy mood, in any case!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm doctorjazz:

60 degrees out, needed to get out, walk Ozzie for a bit, will be back later.
Avatar 2:12pm Stork:

Enjoy the world, doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm chresti:

fred, @1:47, that me reminds me I need to download my recent bandcamp acquisitions onto a flash drive to take to work tomorrow.
Avatar 2:13pm Stork:

Ole, already!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm chresti:

Ole, indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm chresti:

That me had nothing to do with it, fred.
Avatar 2:18pm Stork:

Masekela did do a fair amount of so-so mainstream pop - and a lot of cover tunes, which I've avoided here. Even Grazin' In the Grass - his biggest hit, was not huge to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm doctorjazz:

It's an experiment-haven't been able to walk a block due to back pain for a year. Had epidural injections this past Tuesday, see if it helped.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm doctorjazz:

(Wearing my FMU hoodie!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm chresti:

Here's hoping, doc. Walking usually helps my back pain, along with sucking in my gut.
Avatar 2:20pm northguineahills:

@chresti: I read that as "flash drive accusations", and wondered if working at the Getty was more curious then I imagined....
Avatar 2:21pm Stork:

I much prefer his African music, always informed by his be-bop roots, and vice versa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Michael 98145:

sorry, @chresti. know all about backpain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm fred:

@chresti: That me could be a part of the WFMU dialect that will take over soon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm chresti:

Ha ngh, flash drives are accusing me of forgetting about them and leaving them in a drawer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm chresti:

Michael, I sorely need physical therapy, thanks and good luck with yours.
Avatar 2:27pm StringOFperils:

Nice Hugh Masekela recording; I hadn't heard that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm chresti:

fred, I have this annoying habit of dislocating the cursor when I'm typing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm spodiodi:

dug the Masekela

why did the flash drive cross the road? because it missed the bus

Avatar 2:40pm northguineahills:

I remember when a friend came into my apt, plugged in a thumb drive into my laptop. He then said, "you now have the new Daft Punk album" (it was released as a thumb drive format).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm doctorjazz:

Managed the short walk, not 100% pain free, but butnot as bad as it has been. Contracting the belly/engaging the core, good start, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Ike:

@Threemoons, I’m happy w/my short new haircut as well, having finally found a place that does outdoor cuts. Normally wouldn’t get it cut this short except in the hottest part of summer, but I’m hoping this lasts until I’m fully vaxxed.

With fronds like these, who needs anemones?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Ike:

Excited for that first Pfizer dose on Tuesday!

I hear you guys on the back pain. Mine is sometimes upper, sometimes lower! I wanted to walk up to Bklyn Heights yesterday but ended up risking a quick subway ride instead (double-masked of course). Gotta do more yoga and stretches.
Avatar 2:47pm Stork:

That's tough to top, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm fred:

Top that Glenpassaic then! My legs are turning to slime though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm fred:

@doctorjazz: did your wife bribe the IT guy to rig your computer to say physical releases are unavailable? That's not easy, and would explain the delay
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Michael 98145:

ah, the good ole "404" hack

Avatar 2:59pm jimbrux:

Oh! Ha! Well, it's still a great show! (Also I loves me a bit of free solo guitar like that last one...)
Avatar 3:00pm Stork:

Oh! Yeah! I gotta do another hour?! Oh, shit! Think fast, rabbit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm doctorjazz:

Avatar 3:03pm Stork:

Susan Alcorn is just amazingly different from anyone ever, jimbrux.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm doctorjazz:

*heaven* hah...
Avatar 3:04pm northguineahills:

I saw Susan Alcorn solo in Tonic's basement, there might have been 10-12 people there, and I just laid down on the floor next to her slide guitar and zoned out....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm doctorjazz:

Overtime/not overtime.
Avatar 3:05pm jimbrux:

@Stork there were little snatches that reminded me vaguely of Elliott Sharp's less noise-y solo stuff... but yeah she's clearly ploughing her own furrow. Wonderful.
Avatar 3:07pm Stork:

That makes me melt with nostalgia, ngh. Oh to be in Tonic now that Spring is here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Little Danny:

I am feeling this mellow misterioso vibe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 3:09pm jimbrux:

Over here in London, I think our Tonic is maybe The Vortex... And God I miss it!
Avatar 3:10pm StringOFperils:

Stork's takin' us out into the desert. Sounds like fowl play.
Avatar 3:10pm Stork:

She uses a lotta volume pedal, like Sharp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm doctorjazz:

Man, Poor Man Blues is too beautiful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Michael 98145:

Oh. This would sound even sweeter in the desert.
Avatar 3:11pm jimbrux:

Last gig I went to was Craig Taborn solo @ The Vortex, and wow, just wow. Sorry, reminscing all by my self over here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Michael 98145:

We saw Mark O'Connor when he was still a small tyke.
Avatar 3:12pm Stork:

Oh, dang, Michael 98145 - i posted the wrong song title for Knopfler/Atkins - fixed now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm doctorjazz:

I mentioned this on Jeff's show, but Don Byron will be at The Falcon in Marlboro NY next Sunday (they were doing outdoor concerts last summer, moved indoors for the winter, don't know if they're back outdoors yet).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Little Danny:

One of m fave Szabo tracks, period. Gabor's accent is the coolest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm fred:

This won't ring a bell for anyone, but I just read an "interview" with Kelly Cooper and Pavol Liska about their creative process. It often involves tapes of phone conversations, so they recorded a phone conversation with the would-be editor. It didn't get published as intended, but it's really on point
Avatar 3:21pm Stork:

Next week I'm switching permanently to an all-Ray Brown format. Just thought I'd tell ya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Ike:

Just tried to lie down on the floor and do some stretches but Toasty keeps getting in the way while purring loudly. Goofy cat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Little Danny:

@Ike: Great name for a cat, Toasty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm chresti:

Franco just gave me a haircut in the front yard while the neighborhood cats lollygagged in the weeds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Little Danny:

Congrats, chresti! Beehive? Pixie? Bob? Glob?
Avatar 3:29pm StringOFperils:

@chresti > Was he using topiary hedge as a reference?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm chresti:

Aw, can you fly over here to get a shot, Stork?
Kind of a Bob, LD.
Avatar 3:30pm Stork:

I wish, chresti but that would be so complicated with mandatory quarantining and all that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 3:41pm StringOFperils:

Good luck, Stork! The sense of relief is worth it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm fred:

@chresti: Good luck with that. I may or not be eligible (changes every week). Then I need a prescription or not (also changes every week). To get an appointment to an approved center (list changes every week). There's no vaccine anyway unless you're connected, so play again
  3:43pm JBoogie:

it's sunday. easter, even. give the vax talk a rest, guys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm chresti:

My son set up mine and Franco's shot. Part of the problem is that they're reluctant to go to the local hospital which my son determined was actually an excellent one.
Avatar 3:49pm Stork:

I will, JBoogie. Just as soon as I get - ya know - the vax.
  3:50pm headcleaner:

it ain't over till it's over... so if volx need to talk about the vax, then so be it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm fred:

@chresti: sadly, what works in France is getting in touch with the local elected officials, so tell your son to do that. Squeaky wheel does get the grease. My father hated the idea, spend two months waiting in line, then played the game and got vaccinated within three days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Doug Schulkind:

Very extremely pleased to welcome Lady Chanticleer to the Drummer Stream. Her debut broadcast of Ritual Music is up next!

All hail our Lady!! Let's all go!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Ike:

@fred, wow that sounds even crazier than NY. Rare to hear health care being more of an issue than in Europe than here. Of course this is a rare situation where a health-care-related thing is free in the U.S. (Some leftists have correctly pointed out that this suggests we Americans are not uniquely unsuited in some inherent way for universal health care, and it could work at least as well here as anywhere.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm chresti:

Fantastic show, Stork! Thank you times a hundred!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Stork! Time to kick back with an Easter egg.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm doctorjazz:

It's available in Joisey in theory-my daughters triedto schedule shots, they came available at midnight. By the time you clicked and scheduled it, someone elsehad gotten it, and none available. Her boyfriend, who writes programs, wrote one that grabbed open slots, and they were able to get the vac.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm fred:

@Ike: yeah, weird reversal. It's brutal here

It's not the health system that hurt Europe-the US just threw a ruin of money at vaccines, Europe was wary of being taken advantage of, and didn't get as much.
