Avatar 9:05am hyde:

Avatar 9:07am hyde:

Avatar 9:09am Martinibomb:

Good morning Jeff! Hi Fred
Avatar 9:10am DJpeterDE:

This track is so "d:0"
Avatar 9:11am Listener Gregory:

Good morning, all. I do not believe in Easter—I am a DOuter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Uncle Michael:

Good morning. I have risen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Jeff Golick:

Ok here we go: great to see you, @hyde, @fred, @Wolfgang, @holland oats, @DJpeterDE, @Martinibomb, @Listener Gregory!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am fred:

Deep spiritual query already: should one seek a priest or a barista?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Jeff Golick:

Like bread after Passover, @Uncle Michael. Hiya.
Avatar 9:14am Martinibomb:

Hello pre-coffee Uncle Michael
Avatar 9:25am Listener Gregory:

I know that we have members of all religious beliefs here, but surely we can all agree that Sun Ra is the Messiah, and Jeff is his prophet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Jeff Golick:

@fred: a priestista would really pack 'em in, I imagine.
Avatar 9:26am Wolfgang:

You're comped, fred. Order anything you see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Jeff Golick:

@LG: I am merely a follower, trying to keep up!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Jeff Golick:

@Doug! How goes the yogoes?
Avatar 9:42am Listener Gregory:

I thought these last three cuts were the same record! (I was in the kitchen.) Excellent composition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Jeff Golick:

Strings 'n' things.
Avatar 9:46am Listener Gregory:

You are the Butch Morris of the recorded world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Jeff Golick:

I do not resemble that remark, but I do thank you for the kind words, @LG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Jeff Golick:

Who is going to reissue the Gramavision catalog??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Jeff Golick:

Helloooos and good mornings to @chresti and @WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Jeff Golick:

(@Doug: well received, thank you.)
Avatar 10:27am Listener Gregory:

@WR, this is real wake-up music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Jeff Golick:

If I were booking gigs, I would try to get this crew over to NYC/USA asap.
Avatar 10:28am northguineahills:

Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Jeff Golick:

Hola, @northguineahills!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Jeff Golick:

For those keeping track, we're at about the halfway point now.
Avatar 10:31am Listener Gregory:

A record with one 41-min cut is not exactly radio friendly, present company excluded of course. That may limit the album's exposure.
Avatar 10:32am northguineahills:

DMX had a heart attack, at least he's still alive (damn, he's older then I).
Avatar 10:32am Martinibomb:

awesome set today Jeff! I'm doing some painting and really enjoying myself with the soundtrack
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @LG. The label, Astral Spirits, also sent out an 8 or 9 minute "radio edit," which I believe John Allen has already played, but...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Jeff Golick:

Glad to hear it, @Martinibomb! Are you painting for pleasure, or for, like, furniture?
Avatar 10:35am northguineahills:

@Gregory: on free 103point9.org, I once played the full Philip Glass opera, Akhenaten. which is over three hours long (my only track of the show).
  10:35am WM:

Any one who manages to listen to this whole track deserves a Purple Heart. I'm still in contention....
Avatar 10:36am Listener Gregory:

@ngh, Freeform radio is the exception that proves the rule.
Avatar 10:36am northguineahills:

(the only time I can claim I outdid Bryce in dj track longevity).
Avatar 10:36am Martinibomb:

pleasure/$$$ I've been an illustrator most of my working life but now doing abstracts for MEEEEE luckily people dig em sold a few working on more bigger ones heh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am chresti:

I missed the first half, can you play it again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am fred:

@ngh: but did you have to do a station ID each hour?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Jeff Golick:

Glad you're here and hanging in, @WM!
Swag For Life Member 10:42am zzz:

never heard of [Ahmed] before this is pretty great. curious to hear more. wonder if they do this kind of massive improv in the live setting often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Jeff Golick:

That's great, @Martinibomb.
@chresti, don't tempt me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Jeff Golick:

@zzz: oh yeah! The two previous albums I've heard are very much in the same vein.
Avatar 10:43am northguineahills:

@fred: no, it was pirate, and online, but just becoming legitimate, now knowm as wavefarm.org (they have a legit terrestrial station as well. Mayuko djs there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Jeff Golick:

@zzz: see also www.discogs.com...
Avatar 10:45am Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, could you send some frank snapshots of your daughter's face as she listens to this? I would love to see them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am doctorjazz:

listening through headphones, had to cut volume a minute ago, intense!
Swag For Life Member 10:46am zzz:

nice thanks. saw this album popping up a few times as i was checking out bandcamp on friday. nice to hear it now
Avatar 10:47am Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, you are depriving her of a special experience.
Avatar 10:48am northguineahills:

this ahmed is charging me, new to me and digdug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am doctorjazz:

LG, I took out the headphones, showed her the post and she cracked up! Could be a post coming somewhere...
Avatar 10:49am northguineahills:

can't wait for more cafe oto live recordings....
Swag For Life Member 10:50am zzz:

:::clapping::: and feel like i’ve said this/felt this so many times during the last year but that really made me miss going to shows
  10:50am WM:

I made it! Congratulations to all the other true believers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am doctorjazz:

Now that everyone's up, time to listen over speakers, have some coffee (have to get out of bed 1st, of course...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Jeff Golick:

Same same, @zzz.
@WM, congrats. It's in you now!
Avatar 10:53am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, when the time comes, please announce the full personnel on this (1961) piece.
Avatar 10:54am Listener Gregory:

Also, this "Nights on Saturn" has strong overtones of Out of Nowhere (with a different bridge?).
Avatar 10:54am DJpeterDE:

I will have to relisten for "Out of Nowhere" changes in the Cafe Oto performance
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am coelacanth∅:

good morning Jeff and OUTies
Avatar 10:56am DJpeterDE:

@LG "out of nowhere" doesn't have a bridge... I think it's ABAC
Avatar 10:56am DJpeterDE:

(maybe you mean the B sounded altered)
Avatar 10:57am Listener Gregory:

@DJpeterDE, but this song does have a bridge, which sounds borrowed from a bebop song. I recognize it but haven't yet figured out what it came from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am coelacanth∅:

(it reminded me of a Bird song...i don't know "out of nowhere" by name)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am coelacanth∅:

(or if it's Bird)
Avatar 11:03am DJpeterDE:

@LG I will give it a re-listen! maybe they use the A section from "out of nowhere" but collage it. hang on, will research...
@coelacanthø: Dameron (Casbah) has a tune based on "out of nowhere" as does Ornette (Jayne) but I don't know that parker does... i'm on the case!
Avatar 11:04am Listener Gregory:

Bird did record OoN: www.youtube.com... but this version is slower, and he plays around the melody rather than directly playing it (in the first statement anyway).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am coelacanth∅:

Thanks DJpeter... maybe it's Ornette i'm thinking of after all?
Avatar 11:05am Listener Gregory:

@DJpeterDE. Good. I will give my memory some days to percolate the "bridge" and figure out where I have heard it before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Jeff Golick:

I bow before the collected musical wisdom here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am coelacanth∅:

cool,Thanks Gregory... it's in line for later
Avatar 11:07am Listener Gregory:

Yes, our collected wisdom is: We think we have heard these themes before, maybe, somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am doctorjazz:

Bird did indeed record OoN, didn't catch those changes on Nights of Saturn, will have to listen again later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am doctorjazz:

Certainly not on the Cafe Oto track.
Avatar 11:11am Listener Gregory:

Correct. It's the theme of the 1961 recording where I hear it. Closer to the original song than Bird's recording (the one I found, anyway).
Avatar 11:11am DJpeterDE:

So intriguing that almost all Bird compositions are based on established changes. I think "Confirmation" may be the only all original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Jeff Golick:

I don't think I will ever have the confidence or knowledge to say something like, "That song doesn't have a bridge."
Avatar 11:12am DJpeterDE:

@LG Joe Goldberg's original liner notes on the A A-M album are no help.
Avatar 11:13am Listener Gregory:

PERDIDO?!
My memory has churned out that the second part of Nights of Saturn is a break in Perdido before the theme returns on some well-known recording. Maybe Duke or maybe a later bebop one (Mingus? Dizzy?).
@Jeff, ditto.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am doctorjazz:

That was early bebop in general. The tale told is that the young bebopers put together really difficult heads to established tunes to keep lesser players out of jam sessions.
Avatar 11:15am DJpeterDE:

@LG I think your memory is tickled by "Perdido"? (Mingus? or Dizzy? had licks that they used on Perdido?) Is it Bird's "Tail Feathers" and Abdul-Malik has appropriated it?
Avatar 11:15am Listener Gregory:

I will come up with my source by next week's show... or perhaps go mad trying.
Avatar 11:15am DJpeterDE:

@LG wow we arrived there at the same time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am fred:

@Jeff: If you ever feel a song lacks a bridge, I'm sure there's a NY entrepreneur out there who has one to sell you
Avatar 11:17am Listener Gregory:

@DJp, great minds think in the same rut.
Avatar 11:18am DJpeterDE:

@Jeff: if it walks like a bridge and quacks like a bridge, then go ahead and call it a bridge
Avatar 11:19am DJpeterDE:

@LG also, our memories are apparently connected to the same cosmic "cloud"
Avatar 11:21am Listener Gregory:

A quick scan suggests the section is not on the original Duke recording. More at 11.
Will try to concentrate on today's show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am coelacanth∅:

Jeff @1112 i have my own version of music theory and it doesn't include terms like "bridge", but i *think* i know what it means!

Nice arrangement. Do a lot of groups do later Bowie covers? I don't hear that many, but I don't get out much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am fred:

@doctorjazz: I don't remember if I said that before, but please thank your daughter for bringing Amirtha Kidambi to my attention.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am doctorjazz:

@zzz, I don't know for sure-they did switch to indoor music/dining when the weather didn't permit outdoor seating. I'll have to check if I go (still not up for indoor crowded venues).

Belated scholarship. That section that @DJpeterDE and I were puzzling out is indeed the end tag of Perdido. Here it is at about 20:48— www.youtube.com... . I doubt very much this was the original, but it'll take me some time to track if back further. It's not in the Massey Hall concert, where Mingus, Dizzy, et al. played it.
