i just bought a Bissell
  5:11pm JBoogie:

It sounds like a Brian Eno album, as featured in the latest Adam Curtis BBC documentary
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm coelacanth∅:

pretty sure Byrne's "latin" period came before Simon's though
  5:13pm JBoogie:

again, has anyone ever called the man Christopher Columbus? Didn't he invent "world music"? lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm coelacanth∅:

him or Gabriel
  5:16pm Yes:

😎😎😎
  5:16pm JBoogie:

ew, i was just reminded of Baja Fresh (and food poisoning)
Avatar 5:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

A fair amount has been said about Byrne as a collaborator / frenemy ...but has he in fact failed to give Credit to International Artists - as any kind of Originator or Writer ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Mark Hurst:

I'm all for David Byrne here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm olivia:

I dunno man there's a Baja Fresh across the street from the giant IKEA in Burbank right next to the In n Out and it was the best
  5:18pm JBoogie:

I think Byrne has actually done more to give exposure to a lot of these "world" artists. I remember a comp he did in the mid 00s of all west african psych stuff, and it was the first time i heard William Onyeaboar... years later, Onyeaboar is on every "hipster's" playlist (along with Alice Coltrane, etc). I have no issue with David. He's just easy to make fun of. And I like fun.
  5:19pm JBoogie:

ugh no. I know that exact Baja Fresh and that's exactly where I got food poisoning. No self respecting Angeleno eats that crap. It's like Taco Bell in a rented tuxedo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm olivia:

loved that SALSA BAR at baja fresh. oh also funny story they opened up a jersey mike's in that same lil strip in Burbank CA and everyone was like "whats a sandwich"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Yes:

bean burritos at baja fresh were the best.
vacuuming now and having a blast
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm coelacanth∅:

Rabbit i haven't heard or read anything to the effect; though i also haven't noticed one way or another. i shall continue to assume he's always given appropriate credit, as it seems in line with his nature and attitude.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm nathan:

yeah, byrne's a great evangelist for underheard "world" music, not a big fan of much he's produced himself since the Heads' tho
Avatar 5:21pm Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

yes david byrne on the same level of martin scorsese in terms of using his powers of fame for good and helping increase exposure to lesser popular artists outside North America and Europe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm olivia:

HAHA Jboogie yea u right i'm just messing with ya. but I did go there when I was tired of in n out and ikea ice cream and california pizza kitchen a couple min away and my friends wanted to HANG
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm nathan:

also apparently Jerry Harrison talks some real trash about him in that recent autobiography he put out...
  5:21pm JBoogie:

the thought of Baja Fresh's disgusting salsa bar is gonna make me hurl. best salsa bar in LA is on the corner of Braodway and Ave 25 in Lincoln Heights, open every night 7 nights a week. On the sidewalk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Baja Joe:

I have nothing to say about that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm nathan:

im not taking sides. i just love some good rock goss
  5:22pm JBoogie:

they lay the salsa out right on the sidewalk. no table. just raw piles of salsa. dollar a pound
Avatar 5:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ha! Least in California - you get all you can eat salsa & chips before you even order - like it's normal food not some elitist exotica speciality trip...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm coelacanth∅:

Paul Simon of course got and, fashionably, continues to get shit for "exploitation"...even though he was always clear and obvious about the sources of his inspiration; and he gave jobs, money and exposure and future opportunities to countless musicians.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm olivia:

man who knew baja fresh would make me nostalgic for los angeles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Hoboken Pete:

I'm getting a "Baja O'Reilly" vibe from this
  5:24pm JBoogie:

I think Vampire Weekend, thankfully, took some of the heat off Paul for being white colonizers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Yes:

this track is so good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm nathan:

@Hoboken, that's a good one
Avatar 5:25pm Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

a friend once described Bitchin Bajas as the "social terry riley"
Avatar 5:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Of course - PaulSimon broke the boycott of South Africa people were holding against Apartheid to do it. Reagan & Thatcher *opposed* Mandella as a Commie - remember.
  5:26pm JBoogie:

I just want to mention Billy Joel right now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm nathan:

cant wait to get my vaccine so i can continue seeing Billy in MSG every month!
  5:27pm JBoogie:

you a lucky boy!
Avatar 5:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...vaccines could end the career of my band The Superspreaders...
Avatar 5:28pm Buffalo Bills Quarterback Josh Allen:

lmao, billy joel at MSG should be like its own sector of the economy. as in "i work at the billy joel at msg industry"
  5:28pm JBoogie:

hahahahah
Avatar 5:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...free salsa made in the third world...
  5:28pm JBoogie:

wonder how much crypto Billy has
  5:29pm JBoogie:

Corgan, that is
  5:29pm CT bland:

Great show today Olivia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm nathan:

i imagine Corgan is DEEP in crypto. seems on brand for him
  5:29pm JBoogie:

he's here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Michael in Montclair:

Hi @olivia. Going back to that David Byrne song Loco de Amor, I think you may have been thinking about the intro to the 1986 Jonathan Demme cult classic flick Something Wild with Melanie Griffith, Jeff Daniels, and Ray Liotta.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm coelacanth∅:

yes,RR he did. and maybe it was more selfishness than inspiration? maybe it was because he saw the obvious lack of success the boycott was achieving?
in any case his ignoring the rule, which may have had an ulterior motive behind it anyway- as so many supposedly humanitarian "efforts" do, contributed to the end of apartheid.
  5:30pm JBoogie:

hey the gloating non-pledger loves the set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm olivia:

haha yea Michael, is that the opener? or no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Michael in Montclair:

@olivia, I’m not sure if that was the song. If it wasn’t , then it definitely sounded awfully familiar to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm coelacanth∅:

haha, calm down JB! trolls will be trolls.
  5:33pm JBoogie:

is Byrne still a ubiquitous sighting around NYC on his bike?
  5:34pm JBoogie:

years ago, I used to see him almost every other time I went there. maybe going to the same galleries
Avatar 5:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Think the Byrne is over the end credits to 'SomethingWild'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm tim from champaign (now washington):

I do not know this Pagan Tango record. It's very Nico-esque.
  5:35pm JBoogie:

I watched Stop Making Sense for the first time in like 30 years a few years ago. Just stunning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm coelacanth∅:

if there's anyone that hasn't seen this, or has, i suggest bookmarking it for 4.5 minutes of near-future amusement.
duckduckgo.com...
  5:39pm JBoogie:

wow thanks coel!
  5:40pm JBoogie:

I think that Baja Fresh is a Spirit Halloween now
  5:40pm JBoogie:

Burbank is the seventh ring of hell
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm tim from champaign (now washington):

What's Baja Fresh?
  5:41pm CT bland:

Love in and out burger. Baja fresh not so much
  5:41pm JBoogie:

a shitty mexican chain owned by Wendy's
Avatar 5:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Disgusting how much money they have.'
...Also California...
  5:42pm JBoogie:

dude California is the greatest example of how there's no middle class anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Michael in Montclair:

Revolution Rabbit, I believe that the waitress from the diner in the beginning and ending scenes sang ‘Wild Thing’ during the end credits.
  5:43pm JBoogie:

Los Angeles, in particular is a grand demonstration of the class gap
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm listener james from westwood:

When I think of Baja Fresh, I remember Paulie Walnuts saying, "You want I should send the kid for 'Ba-dja Fresh'?"
Avatar 5:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Michael - oh yeah - more a Jamaican toasting thing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Travisano66:

THE SALSAS did not all taste the same. The brown one known once as the NORTEÑA sauce was the best!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm tim from champaign (now washington):

hahaha - that's a great description JBoogie! From the chain that brought you the Super Bar, what could go wrong?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Wow Gina! I'm from Burbank! Lived on Dartmouth. Back in the good old days there was a movie theater down the street from where Baha Fresh is now where you could see a double bill of second run movies for a dollar. Also a Shakey's Pizza, and a great cheap department store, Zody's, where I bought some of my first LPs, and cheap clothes.

My mom said there were rumors that those gigantic mansions were used to film porn!
  5:44pm JBoogie:

I love LA like Randy Newman loves LA, but it's becoming harder and harder to exist there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I love LA and the Valley and I miss it a lot but I moved to San Francisco to go to college because San Francisco, and now I'm near San Jose which feels a lot like the Valley.
  5:46pm CT bland:

Shakey's pizza! LOL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm olivia:

hell yea SHAKEYS!
  5:47pm JBoogie:

if you're in LA, and locked into a spot, STAY! I lost my home in 2018 and could not find a way back in. what I was paying for a 1 BR 10 years ago, I could barely get a room with 3 roommates in a less-than-ideal part of town. it was heartbreaking. I had to leave though. I hope the rent comes down. I would like to come back. homelessness there now is insane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm olivia:

Shakeys was the best. didnt they call those potato fries like mojos or something
  5:48pm CT bland:

They used to have a piano player in their restaurants.
  5:48pm JBoogie:

i've actually never been to a Shakey's but whenever i'd see one i'd like to imagine it as "Neil Young's Pizza Restaurant"
Avatar 5:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Been back in small-town NewHampshuh so long the lack of Culture makes me insane
...but when I 1st got back from 16 years in SantaBarbara... exiting the Class Divide in SoCal - had a *visceral* release of tension - a long involuntary exhalation form the diaphragm. Not mental - but physical.
  5:49pm JBoogie:

which reminds me of thos supermarket ads Bob Weir did years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm olivia:

Sorry about that JBoogie. My mom got moved out of a couple of years ago, just got too expensive. Luckily she moved before covid because she woulda been really screwed. It's hard to grow old in LA
Avatar 5:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

*fROm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm olivia:

wow Sweet Corn Lizzie that's hilarious that you grew up on Dartmouth. I used to live on Providencia street, borderline Glendale
  5:51pm JBoogie:

yeah, I was forced out finally in the summer of 2019, just before COVID. landed in Mt Shasta CA (basically Twin Peaks), and I am not really quite sure what happend. narrowly avoided cult indoctrination in the process here, but that's probably a another convo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm dale:

hey now - sounds like incidental music from knightrider.
  5:51pm JBoogie:

things got real weird when i lost my place and had to live in my van.
Avatar 5:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

California is a series of Theme Parks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm PaulRobeson1920:

Good afternoon ya’ll!

POOL- noice song
  5:53pm JBoogie:

nah, California is a lot more than that. it's very complex. it's more like a country than it is comparable to any other state, especially a New England colonial state. our economy is big enough to be it's own country. keep that in mind when talking about class economics and politics. it's really not that simple
  5:53pm JBoogie:

California history alone is really unique
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm listener 126464:

Thanks Olivia and the day shift.
Avatar 5:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well there are several Themes.
  5:54pm CT bland:

Looks like Newsome may get recalled
  5:55pm JBoogie:

that said, people shouldn't be here and i will always maintain that the agricultural industries here and the populating of so california has creating a colossal envirnmental disaster... the salton sea for example.and the middle of CA is really a disgusting dustbowl because of people. it's awful and sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm chris in the redwoods:

and there *are* lots of parks here... so... in a way... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Krys O.:

Thanks, Olivia!
  5:56pm JBoogie:

mostly, i think central and southern california, in terms of human population and development, is a big mistake that will eventually yield disaster
  5:56pm JBoogie:

the most beautiful state in the union as well... California. i don't think there's another state that is as ecologically diverse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Will the Sound Guy:

Yea big ups to the Skeleton crew, Olivia, and all of you
