A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I've been watching cricket for a decade, and still barely know what's going on (and I've looked up the rules, youtubes, and everything). Still watching, I'll eventually figure it out.
Avatar 9:34am βrian:

Kanopy can be useless, depending on the particular subscription. I've found plenty of films I'd like to see, through our university, but none are available. Oy.
  9:35am Mark Williams:

I used to play cricket, actually. That ball is no joke - harder than a baseball and only one person has a "mitt" to catch it with. Bare hands for everyone else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Trouble:

@ brian:we use Kanopy for our pandemic film club and the university profs have to find the films elsewhere half the time due to university kanopy being more lightweight in offerings

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am WoodsOfNH (now Maine):

Years ago a co-worker, who was from India, tried to explain cricket to me. It seems like it would help if you knew nothing about baseball. I was always trying to draw parallels, which didn't seem helpful.

i caught a foul baseball at a major league game once; my hands were still stinging when I got home
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Pale Son:

Kanopy is a great idea, but I've found its selection very limited and its streaming kinda glitchy.
Avatar 9:38am still b/p:

Had to switch from laptop's wee onboard speakers to something better. Last few tracks of first set were so good, the music demanded something better. This show is amazingly reliable in providing enjoyable music. There should be a tighter word or term for that....but ARIPEM lacks punch and grace as an acronym.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Trouble:

when we first got Knopy it was glitchy@pale son. we deleted the app from our tv and reloaded a newer version and all was well in the kanopy universe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am steveo:

  9:39am Mark Williams:

i love all the weird phrasings in cricket. Field positions like "silly leg," "mid-off", "square leg" ('there's no one behind square leg' is a common phrase), and of course the classic "LBW - leg before wicket."
  9:40am Glistener MW:

Whoa — “Whoa” here is amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Pale Son:

Oh, that's good to know, @Trouble! Could be more due to my old AppleTV device for casting from laptop than Kanopy itself, I guess.
Avatar 9:41am northguineahills:

When I played soccer in Prospect Park, when we played the West Indian team, their friends would play cricket next to our field. (yes, they all hit the ganja before hand, I could never do that before cardiovascular exercise, maybe an edible).
Avatar 9:42am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

There is even Wheelchair rugby at some Tournaments... It goes like this 18-35 competitive club sides. 35-45 years old bracket. 45-55 then 55 and older sides!! Canada is usually very good in that division! (Slightly modified rules for some Ruggers in the 55 and older but same game) depending on the color of your shorts is the level of Contact in the old boys leagues
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Passaic River Blues:

@LastVisibleDog: I'm pretty jealous of Left and Gulf Coasters who get to see, like, eight kinds of hummingbirds. Here in the Northeast, we generally only see ruby-throated hummingbirds, which are stunning, glorious marvels nevertheless, but that's it. Hummingbird feeders generally work; keep them clean, use prepared nectar mixtures or sugar water, maintain consistency (if the feeder becomes a reliable food source, that means the buddies will return more reliably). If you have a yard, there are flower varieties that they absolutely love. I can attest that a decent-sized patch of monarda (also called bee balm) will bring all the ruby-throats to the yard.
@Brian: pileated woodpeckers are dinosaurs straight-up.

A parable of milkweed: To do good for monarch butterflies, I stuck hundreds, really thousands, of milkweed seeds in my backyard garden. Whole pods-worth were entombed. Sure enough, milkweed plants popped up. The next year, milkweed plants consumed the entire garden, smothering the other flowers that I'd planted for bees'n'butterflies. Via underground roots, new milkweed plants now emerge far beyond the garden. There's a reason why it's called "milkWEED."

@Dayffid & Trouble: I enjoyed Macdonald's book. Mix of personal memoir, historical gloss of falconry, investigation of T.H. I've obsessed on French singer Helene Segara, especially "Amaretti," her album sung in Italian ("non parlo Italiano"). As with so many French singers, most of Segara's tunes bathe the listener in rich, melodic melancholy. And there's Carla Bruni, the French singer who'll be spending a year in close quarters with her recently convicted husband, former French president Nicolas Sarkozy.

butterfly great to grow large patches of milkweed. If invasive, just rip them up while young. Also, large milkweed plants can be damaged by weather, animals, etc., making a home for the monarch tough.

Just remember folks, we have lost most of the monarch butterfly. In one year we lost close to 80%. I now grow lots of milkweed in my permaculture garden.

Many if not all weeds are edible or have medicinal purposes for people and critters. Grow weeds and mushroom. Some butterfly caterpillars love dill and fennel, like the swallowtail butterfly. The plants get so large the critters do little damage.

It's all about a balanced ecosystem.

The US Congress is made up of the House of Representatives, with each state being represented according to population. California gets many more representatives than, say, Iowa or Delaware.

It was intentional, an intentional sop to the Slave Power and anti-democratic forces. Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am YETI BOB:

(Fortunately you don't have to be Cameroonian to get it!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Passaic River Blues:

@Mike W: truth about Bebey. Thankfully that Maghreb K7 collection sounds totally worth it--we heard two unimpeachably awesome tracks from it this morning.

  11:42am Rick A:

Are those Francois de Roubaix tracks from certain film scores?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am paddy in matawan:

Very new Blondie sound here. Like
Avatar 11:43am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I think Joyce may have been to where I go to Kerouac to get to w/ Life as Poetry (or something) - a good bit earlier...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am YETI BOB:

@Dayffid: Kafka never wrote anything very long ... some of my favorite pieces by him are just a few sentences

For those of you that cracked HBO, "Welcome to Chechnya", is a story of of the the torture and attempt at escape of LBGTQ+ community. It makes the rest of Russia look like a rainbow paradise (it isn't). Canada took in 44 refugees in the last 4 years, the US, took none. If you're in the US, Canada, Mexico, or EU, lobby your politicians to take more in refugess : unfoundation.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Pale Son:

Yeah, gonna be busting my piggy bank for Bandcamp Friday followed by the WFMU Marathon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Trouble:

i don't own many specific film soundtracks by Francois de Roubaix @rick a. the majority of what i found is on giant collections. but yes he was a massive film soundtrack guy in his day
Avatar 11:45am northguineahills:

Sorry about the TLDR post, That doc didn't let me sleep last Friday until 7am, it scarred me, and cis-straight male....
  11:45am wenzo llc.:

@trouble omg thanks for letting me know!! Bandcamp emailed me about it like a month ago but not today🤷🏻‍♂️
  11:45am Dayffid:

@yetibob I know! All the more shame on me
  11:46am Marko:

Rai is wonderful, bawdy, assertive, lost-love dance music. It's tragic how, decades ago, religious fanatics in Algeria murdered key rai artists for writing and performing music the intolerant deemed vile. Many of the musical stars fled to Paris, where "synth rai" was concocted, a terrific amalgam of "those French!" and "those Algerian expats!" An example, in Algeria, of artists being on the cutting edge of social openness and being targeted for death or exclusion.

this really has been a great show!!
Avatar 11:47am northguineahills:

For those of you who like Joe Bataan, look for Joe Ambrosia on YouTube from NYC cable access, he's a recurring character of weirdness in the Bronx...

I appreciate you playing Roubaix's music. I have discovered most of his music through your show, furthering my obsession with French film music. I have a compilation of music from Melville's films with a couple of tracks from Samourai.
