Hello David from sunny Spring-like South Shropshire. Bags the window seat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am David Dichelle:

Hello Brian - very warm and springlike here as well this week, still stubborn patches of snow and ice crust here and there.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Handy Haversack:

Brian is going first-class! I shamble into the bar from the luggage car, trailing dust and smoke. Happy greetings, David and Voyageurs! Sunny and brisk here, nice wind blowing up small whitecaps on the creek.
Avatar 12:01pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

Sylvia, chresti, redkayak, Phillippe, David, Yeti Bob, Yvang, Hubig! A motley crew of true companions!

I somehow got conned into getting something from Amazon? I ordered a book from Abebooks and it came in an Amazon Prime envelope -- which I ignored in the hall for a week assuming there was no way it could be for us! But somehow it was, with an Amazon receipt in it and all. Could have sworn I was ordering from a used bookstore in California.

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:07pm YETI BOB:

(goes to 17 Hippies website, counts hippies - seems that there are actually 13. did they lose 4 hippies or is it triskadekaphobia?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm David Dichelle:

It's a nearby sluice or lock, even after a week of 15-20°C/60-70°F weather!

Hey redkayak! Word origins are so fascinating! :) (j/k)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Handy Haversack:

Apparently, Amazon owns Abebooks. Jesus wept. Is there nothing left that it's OK to buy from?

@HH: Powell?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm David Dichelle:

Redkayak, teaching on the fly...

Well, I have been taking a page from the Book of Yeti Bob and trying random selections (watch it be the Gambia!). And I got ... Antarctica! I mean, I don't even know if David's using it, but it feels wrong somehow to snub it. Antarctica has enough problems!

(Just so youse all know, Sicily and Kashmir aren't on the list David's drawing from. Not that you can't choose them!)

Antarctica!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:21pm redkayak:

@David - Ay, we're covering invasive species tonight ;)

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm dutchtheo:

Hey David, and subway fifers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm David Dichelle:

If you listen carefully to 4'33" you can hear certain Antarctic themes emerge.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Carmichael:

Thanks Yeti. In that case, I'll pick the closest country alphabetically, Sierra Leone.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Handy Haversack:

I hear you, YB, but ... I say we go with Antarctica while we can! When it's over run with flooding and microbes we have no resistance to, it might be too late to create a native music there.

So unless David tells me he's dropped it from consideration, I'm sticking with it!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm YETI BOB:

(My second roll was Santa Lucia; now watch David have gone through the same process!)

One artist every year is brought to Antarctica to live with the researches. I know Kim Stanley Robinson did so one year (and wrote a fine novel out of it). It would be nice to find a comp of music that came out of that.

This book - open-access! - actually looks really interesting. I didn't know that I wanted to read a book about music in Antarctica but now I do. There's a chapter title "The first published music from Antarctica? Captain Doorly’s piano and its roots in older traditions of polar exploration and an imperial guilty conscience". So much to know in this big crazy world!

During the Trans-Antarctic expedition of 1914-1917, three Adelie penguins approached meteorologist Leonard Hussey while he was playing a banjo. Shackleton wrote that: "The solemn-looking little birds appeared to appreciate 'It's A Long Way to Tipperaray' but they fled in horror when Hussey treated them to a little of the music that comes from Scotland. The shouts of laughter from the ship added to their dismay, and they made off as fast as their short legs would carry them".

Lotta politicking in those musical experiments, it sounds like to me, TDK60.

Doctorjazz: With a few exceptions, DJs will be co-hosting via Zoom and the like.

Shackleton made a grave mistake in not taking Ryuichi Sakamoto along on that expedition. The penguins would have dug him I feel:

Antarctica was not rejected! There is a rich tradition of music there.
