Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Mx. Granny (e/em):

These songs remind me of my grandfather, who was stationed in Korea. I wonder if he heard these tunes ever?

Well that would make a nice dream sequence!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

@WR
More Dave Bartholomew (sans trumpet) up next.
Avatar 9:18am bobdc:

Art Blakey's "Blues March" was apparenty 5 years after the Korean War, but it would been a nice followup to the Fats Domino tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
When wouldn't an Art Blakey cut be a good follow-up?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Wayyyy back when, in the early 90's, I listened to the Johnny Otis Show on KPFA. Had NO IDEA what a legend he was, he was just that funy DJ on Saturday mornings!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am fred:

@Mx. Granny: I think Doug's impaired ear is the right one, another left ear would ruin his stereo perception
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Doug Schulkind:

Hooray, the war is over! And so, almost, is this absurd little set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Mx. Granny (e/em):

@fred: that actually IS my right ear, but i forgot to flip the photo. I hope that doesn't throw off the balance!
  9:20am Gina Bacon:

Loving this set, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

@Mx. Granny!
What a delight that must have been! I wonder how many people used to hear Montego Joe's show on WFMU and had no idea who he was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

I'm loving it that you're loving it, Gina Bacon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am fred:

When I finally realized who Johnny Otis was and learned of his vast accomplishments, I was stunned. Saw him performing at a KPFA craft faire and, ha ha! I was like, Johnny Otis is WHITE?!??! I was young and stupid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Mx. Granny (e/em):

And I've updated my right ear, for the correct balance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

You and most of the rest of humanity, Mx. Granny. Johnny Otis was a mystery to most.
Avatar 9:28am Chris Albertyn:

Mx. Granny ... but you still favour one foot over the other?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Uncle Michael:

I caught a ride home on Col. Blake's flight! Comin home, baby!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Avatar 9:29am PAULS:

Goofy ear?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Webhamster Henry:

Where are the Gulf War and Grenada and Panama songs?
Avatar 9:32am PAULS:

Sr. Hamster, I believe "Here's Your Panama Hat, What's Your Hurry" was the one hit wonder from that fateful incursion...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Mx. Granny (e/em):

By the way, it is more difficult to photograph one's own ear than I thought.
Avatar 9:35am PAULS:

Granny - truth! I wouldn't do it in public. People might get the wrong idea.
Avatar 9:36am Listener Gregory:

Mx. Granny, I thought it would be difficult. You have given your ears for WFMU, and we are grateful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Doug Schulkind:

Good tidings, Uncle Michael! holland oats!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am HyperDose:

I'm not hearing any sitar, are my ears broken?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Mx. Granny (e/em):

We need more ears— STAT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

Dr. Holley is the nephew of the legendary jazz bassist Major Holley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

Sitar, kneeltar, standtar. We play all the tars here on GTDS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Brian in UK:

I have never seen the back of my head other than by reflection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Artie:

Lovely piece! Go, Eagles!
  9:46am KWilde:

Good morning Doug and fellow drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am HyperDose:

I feel like the tambourine has made a comeback recently. What is your stance on playing spoons, Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

This is their fight song, Artie! No it's not, how silly!
Avatar 9:46am Chris Albertyn:

Eartar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Doug Schulkind:

@HyperDose
I used to be quite a serious spoons player. No, really. At the age of 12 I played in a band that performed in front of 5000 people. True story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning, KWilde!
Avatar 9:49am bobdc:

Doug, I'll bet you played spoons in your first band in high school. What were they called again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
This was waaaay before high school. Back when I still had my dignity.
Avatar 9:50am bobdc:

Looks like this week's Spotify-based independent research project for me will be Hale Smith. I had never heard of him before.
Avatar 9:51am Listener Gregory:

Apparently the Louisville Orchestra got a large grant to record contemporary composers, and so it has an outsized representation in 20th-century "classical" music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am HyperDose:

The number of accomplished creative types who are affiliated with this station blows my mind. This truly is a special community.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

As usual, you have done your homework, Listener Gregory. (And as usual, I have to keep you after class for detention. Please slap the erasers and pick the gum off the floor before you leave this afternoon.)
Avatar 9:53am PAULS:

Ok I'm getting scared.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
I first came to learn of Hale Smith from Prof. Wendell Logan, head of the Jazz Department at Oberlin. (Smith hailed from nearby Cleveland.) He hipped me to the special relationship between Hale Smith and Eric Dolphy.
Avatar 9:55am PAULS:

Hyperdose: there's a lot of UNaccomplished creative types, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of Eric Dolphy, get a lode of this...
  9:55am Gina Bacon:

I played spoons very badly in my high school jug band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

Ron Carter on cello here with Eric Dolphy. George Duvivier on bass.
  9:56am Gina Bacon:

Beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

Is this "jazz"? What the hell IS jazz?
  9:58am Gina Bacon:

Jazz is the soul made audible, or something...
  9:58am Mark R:

I LOVE "Out There"--such interesting instrumentation--bass AND cello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

I'm buying what you're selling, Gina Bacon.

@Mark R
This Dolphy piece is all Hale Smith in form and composition.
Avatar 10:02am StringOFperils:

Hello, good morning, bright moments...
Avatar 10:02am Listener Gregory:

That name is strange, Doug. "Variations à" is clearly French, but "due" is the Italian word for two. (French would be "deux.") A cross-linguistic joke?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Jeff Golick:

I found you just in time, Doug and Chris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Doug Schulkind:

Dipping into your shellac collection, Chris. It makes me want to cry!
  10:04am Martinibomb:

Hellooooo Doug Schulkind! Hey Jeff, SoP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Yeah, I'm flummoxed by the title. Surely that is a desired result?

So pleased to see you, StringOFperils! Martinibomb!
Avatar 10:05am StringOFperils:

Hi martinibomb....just in time for Chris Albertyn
Avatar 10:06am Chris Albertyn:

StringofPerils glad you could wrap around today, welcome. Greetings Jeff
Avatar 10:07am Listener Gregory:

In Italian, "variations" is "variazioni" (looked it up). The title is mysterious, but you know what they say. Variozioni are the épice de la life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Doug Schulkind:

@Chris Albertyn
Any sense of which American jazz artist exerted the most outsize influence on South African jazz? Ellington perhaps?
  10:08am Ramblin' Ray:

Greetings Doug and Chris. Sounding good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
I like my varioziono with a little butter and olive oil. I eschew the tomato gravy in this instance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am WR:

Chris alas, my phone meetings for the day begins now. catch you in the archive. laters all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Jeff Golick:

Ayo, @Martinibomb! Thanks, @Chris! Just beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Doug Schulkind:

Whoop whoop! Make way for Ramblin' Ray!
Avatar 10:09am Chris Albertyn:

Ellington was the man in South Africa - Kippie Moeketsi loved him, and Charlie Parker. MAnkunku though was Coltrane
Avatar 10:09am StringOFperils:

WIKI translates it as 'Variations Due'. As in 'reparations due', that sort of thing...
  10:09am Martinibomb:

I have good timing! Hi Chris!
Avatar 10:09am Chris Albertyn:

Hey Ramblin Ray, welcome, hello
Avatar 10:11am Chris Albertyn:

HI Martinibomb! That time of the day for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Jeff Golick:

I gather Ellington also had eyes for Sathima Bea, so the admiration was perhaps in some ways mutual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

@Chris A
Mankunku's "Yakhal' Inkomo" is seared into my DNA. A more melancholy work I have never encountered.
  10:12am bigplanetnoise:

Morning, morning!! Is there a seat left?!?
Avatar 10:12am Chris Albertyn:

@Jeff Indeed, Ellington was persuaded by Sathima to look at some great South African musicians .. pity about Frank though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
And Abdullah Ibrahim had ears for Duke Ellington. Quite the love triange.
  10:12am Gina Bacon:

Right here, BPN!
  10:13am Gina Bacon:

@Chris Albertyn
Double wonderful wonderful!

Speaking of wonderful.... Lewis!
Avatar 10:20am Chris Albertyn:

mornin Lewis, all right then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Jeff Golick:

Honestly, the Doug/Chris premium deserves a proper release. Not that I'm complaining.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am chresti:

Franco just woke up and said he liked this music without hard corners first thing in the morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Lewis:

all good here in the rapidly thawing middle west...
  10:22am Martinibomb:

I think Franco is a telepathic wizard - that's just what i was thinking
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am HyperDose:

Morning chresti!
Avatar 10:23am Chris Albertyn:

Thanks Chresti
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Doug Schulkind:

I'm not sure I can properly convey the magnitude of Chris Albertyn's generosity. For more than a decade he shared, via the blog Electric Jive, hundreds upon hundreds of rare and miraculous South African musical offerings. (And wonders from elsewhere on the continent as well.) Along with the music was smart, comprehensive historical detail and commentary. It has enriched my life personally (and this radio show) so monumentally. To have Chris join me on this show is a dream come true.
Avatar 10:24am βrian:

Hello, Lewis. We're skating on thin ice here.
  10:26am bigplanetnoise:

Amazing. Thank you for all of that, Chris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am chresti:

Morning Hyperdose and MB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Lewis:

@ßrian - indeed a deep but brief ice season!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

Chris' generosity will increase exponentially in the form of my marathon premium (music from his collection) and a MASSIVE grand prize I will be offering on both of my marathon programs. Keep your ears open for news!

And now, more Nancy Jacobs. WOW!
Avatar 10:27am Chris Albertyn:

Thank you Doug for your kind words. It is really a privilege to join you and the drummer listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

Oh my god, this piece is amazing. An old standard takes on a whole new meaning in Apartheid South Africa. Chris, how did this get past the censors?!?!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am sinner:

Fantastic Friday morning treat once again. Big thanks to DS & CA.
Avatar 10:29am Chris Albertyn:

@doug, I can only guess that it was Providence
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

Swing high, sinner!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Jeff Golick:

South African musicians have a genius for subtly inserting revolutionary ideas into beautiful tunes.
  Swag For Life Member 10:32am Mikey_B:

This is so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
Not an uncommon expertise/practice of the oppressed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

So glad you're here to hear it, Mikey_B!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Gina Bacon:

This is all so great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @Doug, yeah. (That comment came out more definitive-sounding than I intended.)

Good comment, Jeff!
There, I said it.

Beat me to it, Jeff Golick!
Avatar 10:40am Chris Albertyn:

yep Jeff, it is wonderful that the re-issue ecosystem is becoming so rich and diverse
Avatar 10:42am Chris Albertyn:

Moss Mogale on guitar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

And speaking of the re-issue ecosystem, I will share what Chris' modesty and ethics prevent him from sharing. One of the great developments for lovers of historic South African recordings is the rise of Matsuli Music: matsulimusic.bandcamp.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Jeff Golick:

PRAISE!
Avatar 10:44am spodiodi:

lekker. thanks, Doug!
Avatar 10:45am Chris Albertyn:

Dollar Brand with Sathima at Antibes Jazz Festival one year ahead of the arrival of the The Blue Notes?!? This is LEGEND!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Brian in UK:

Doug, any side effects (or sound effects) after the second jab?
Avatar 10:47am spodiodi:

lol@ Brian w/sound effects
Avatar 10:47am Chris Albertyn:

Ah, you clocked it Doug - so thorough, yes, this is an obscure but beautidful recording
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Mildly sore shoulder, but nothing else to speak of.
Avatar 10:50am Listener Gregory:

The Ella inflections here are marked. She developed her own mature style later, I'm guessing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

Dollar Brand and Sathima Bea Benjamin would marry two years after that 1963 performance.
Avatar 10:50am Chris Albertyn:

here we go Gregory
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Brian in UK:

Doug, oh they stick the needle in your arm.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Stanley:

Love the tootling sax on that last track.
Hi Doug and thanks Chris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am listener Rey:

Thanks Chris, that was excellent. As is usual for your segment (and GTDS every week), I come away with more names of artists & recordings to seek out and explore.
Avatar 11:01am Chris Albertyn:

Ah, thats it, thanks Doug, thanks good people. That's the spot .... back ... in a month!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Webhamster Henry:

Thanks for another great set, Chris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Lewis:

can I start pledging now for the grand prize!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

Yes, a download of virtually the ENTIRE Matsuli Music catalogue (three can't be offered for contractual reasons) will be packaged as a grand prize on both of my marathon shows in the coming weeks. Simply amazing.

Matsuli Music: matsulimusic.bandcamp.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

@Lewis
Sorry to say, no. The pledges have to come in during the show to be eligible for the prizes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Lewis:

I was just funnin' and expressing my enthusiasm!
  11:13am Andrew in Toronto:

Let`s get as far out there as we can!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

@Lewis
I figured, but then I get all marathon-nervous and wanna be clear in case anyone else is wondering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am fred:

@Doug: Speaking of John Tchicai, did you see the doc about the New York Art Quartet that listener alanr made available a couple of weeks ago?
It's still there: vimeo.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

@fred
Oh yes indeed. Thanks for putting up that link. Alan Roth has done terrific work. Check out his 2001 free jazz documentary Inside Out in the Open. I believe the whole thing is watchable on Youtube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Carmichael:

Heya Doug and aspiring (and inspiring) drummers. Been a bit ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

Carmichael!! How the hades are ya?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am doctorjazz:

Meetings, meetings, getting to catch a half hour in transit. Definitely one to catch on the archives. Love these South African episodes.
Hi all!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy, doctorjazz! Listening Out There!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Carmichael:

Been working like the proverbial dog for the last year, locked alone in my work office. Kinda fun, in a Twilight Zone kinda way.
Avatar 11:24am Listener Gregory:

Do I know Joachim Kuhn, or am I confusing him with Steve Kuhn??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

The Proverbial Dog was the name of my first band in high school
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Ask Rolf.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Jeff Golick:

Rolf, not to be confused with Rowlf: muppet.fandom.com...
Avatar 11:27am Listening Out There:

@Listener Gregory: Steve Kuhn is a separate pianist. Did a stint with Coltrane, then recorded his own trios ever since. S. Kuhn also performed for a while with Sheila Jordan...
Avatar 11:27am Listener Gregory:

OK, Joachim is the one who had that fantastic duo album with Ornette Coleman (his only project with piano?). That is a great album.
Avatar 11:28am Listener Gregory:

@Listening, yes, I know Steve Kuhn, but Joachim's name also rang a bell, and I wondered if it was just because of Steve. Apparently not.
Avatar 11:28am Listening Out There:

@Listener Gregory: I *think* Ornette recorded once with Geri Allen...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am viecher:

Late to church, but entering on a high note
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Son, we are waaay north of 110th Street.
Avatar 11:39am northguineahills:

should I dig up?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

@northguineahills
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. This track has a "If There's a Hell Below, We're All Gonna Go" vibe to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am viecher:

@Doug, sent you a note thru the pledge portal re: Andrew Weintraub and Pittsburgh Gamelan. You hip to?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

@viecher
Oh yeah! I've seen Andrew and his students perform several times. I connected with him soon after moving to Pittsburgh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am viecher:

✌︎ lots of love there; I've always associated my admiration of his scholarship with my love of this show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

I was connected to Andrew through a mutual friend, a blogger sharing Indonesian music.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

Hey looky there, it's the exalted Stork!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

  11:49am Andrew in Toronto:

Thanks Doug and Chris for an illuminating morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Uncle Michael:

Have you read about the patent for the ironing board? First patent awarded to an African American woman.

Avatar 11:51am Listener Gregory:

This set is inspiring me to get out on the street and enjoy the brief sight of sunshine. Maybe I will find my lady there (the streets got her). Thanks for a great show, Doug & Chris.
  11:51am Dean:

Give the harpsichordist some: This NYT story about Scott Ross is pretty terrific. His complete Scarlatti traversal is phenomenal; I recall first hearing it when KPFK in LA played the whole flippin' thing over the course of a couple days.
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/26/arts/music/scott-ross-harpsichord-classical-music.html

I met William Christie in 1984 when I visited Europe to hear his ensemble, Les Arts Florissants, in live performances. Christie remains alive and kicking. LAF's B minor mass is glorious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

Barbara King is jiving and conniving!
Avatar 11:52am northguineahills:

Digging Ironing Board Sam, new to me

(I have a friend who goes by Ironing, as he does sound collages on multiple vintage turntables on an ironing board).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael will come to you live from the mean streets of Topeka, jiving and conniving with the Hinky and the Dinky!!!!

The party's over here: wfmu.org...
