hi fred! hi Doug! thanks for your concern! we've warmed up beautifully here & now it just gets better.
  12:25pm Linda Lee:

*still* glad i left those freezing mountains up north. they've got another cold month to go, at least.
Avatar 12:28pm βrian:

@Linda Lee: How was the last week for you, weather-wise?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm WR:

hi all.

what did Simone just say that England gives her?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm adamdoesit:

@WR Honor.
  12:35pm Linda Lee:

hey Brian! it was darn cold here in north Texas. 30 to 40 degrees below normal, with severe wind chills far below that. i was fairly lucky, though. i did keep my power & that meant the cabin i'm living in stayed above freezing for most of the time. i did well. i also had water. thanks for asking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm WR:

thanks @adamdoesit.
  12:39pm Linda Lee:

what a beautiful set. if listeners haven't seen the documentary 'what happened, Miss Simone', see it. it offers amazing insight into the artist & the terrific suffering she endured with long neglected mental illness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm melinda:

Hello Stork Club!
  12:41pm Linda Lee:

that she put forward such a phenomenally beautiful body of work under very, very rough conditions ~ personal & societal ~ is to her credit totally.
Avatar 12:41pm Stork:

I Haven't senn it, Linda Lee, but after watching interviews with Nina's daughter and the filmmaker, I def. intend to, the controversy about the lead's makeup notwithstanding.
Avatar 12:41pm Stork:

Hi melinda!
  12:42pm Linda Lee:

i'm sorry. the lead's makeup ..?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm melinda:

I watched the documentary but skipped the biopic.
Avatar 12:42pm TDK60:

Hi Linda Lee.
  12:43pm Linda Lee:

oh! i didn't see any biopic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm melinda:

I think Stork was referring to that.
  12:43pm Linda Lee:

hey TDK60! how are you?
  12:44pm Linda Lee:

right, i figure so.
Avatar 12:45pm Stork:

@LL: here's the lowdown from wiki: To more accurately portray Simone's likeness, light-skinned Afro-Latina Saldana used dark makeup, nasal and dental prosthetics, and wigs when playing to role of Simone for the film.[10] These adjustments to Saldana's natural appearance continued to raise controversy with Nina Simone fans, viewers and even racial justice advocates like Ta-Nehisi Coates. [11]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Doug Schulkind:

Me, too, Melinda.
Avatar 12:46pm TDK60:

Okay relatively, Linda L. Isolation has me a bit wacky tho.
  12:47pm Linda Lee:

thank you, Stork. i don't remember anyone playing the part of Miss Simone at all! was that part of the documentary? if so, i've totally forgotten it ~ Miss Simone herself was so overwhelmingly present.
  12:50pm Linda Lee:

TDK60 dear, is there no choice about that? solitude is ok, but isolation? no good. unhealthy.
Avatar 12:52pm TDK60:

No choice, roomies left, lost jobs due to economic fallout from virus. And get-togethers are rare, and not smart, yet..
Avatar 12:54pm Hams:

for some reason my discogs is all in german. maybe 'cause i'm listening to the stork club? i don't know.
Avatar 12:54pm Stork:

LL: I mean the biopic, not the doc.
Avatar 12:57pm Stork:

Hey, Hams! Maybe you chose a german page from among various versions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Little Danny:

That was a shredder. Hey Stork, hey all.
  1:00pm Linda Lee:

Avatar 1:01pm Hams:

Avatar 1:02pm Stork:

Hey Danny!! Great fill-in last Sunday!!! Thanks so much!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Little Danny:

My pleaszch, Stork.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Doug Schulkind:

If my memory serves, this London performance by Nina took place soon after a rather horrid breakdown she experienced. Many pleaded with her not to go through with the show. The story goes that Creed Taylor was in the audience, and he immediately reached out and signed her to do the Baltimore album. (The recording of which was a whole other circle of hell for Nina.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm ParUbi:

Wow, what's this turning into?
  1:07pm Linda Lee:

a very odd record ~
Avatar 1:08pm Stork:

It's kinda hard to listn to the Baltimore record for me anyway - it's one of the very few not-so-good albums she ever made.
Avatar 1:09pm Stork:

Agree, Linda Lee. I can't get that tune (Stop!) outta my head, so onto the playlist it goes!
  1:09pm Linda Lee:

'i'll tell you what freedom is to me: no fear.'
damn right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Nina on the recording of the Baltimore LP:

"The material was not my personal choice, and I had no say whatsoever in the selection of songs. It was all done before I could make any decisions."

  1:23pm Linda Lee:

don't recall the original artist. just such a pretty pop record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Michael 98145:

glad you survived the latest disaster, @Linda Lee
Avatar 1:25pm chresti:

Wow, never heard that one.
  1:26pm Linda Lee:

yes, absolutely! thanks, Michael. i'm fresh from the catskills, so what happened here just felt like winter, weatherwise. it was preparation & infrastructure issues that caused suffering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Michael 98145:

" ... a song that was written and recorded as the debut single of the British singer-songwriter and record producer Jonathan King."
  1:26pm Linda Lee:

That voice in 69 is ragged, has a bit of the same, bone chilling effect on me as late Billie Holiday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Doug Schulkind:

The address for the Drummer Stream's homepage is easy: wfmu.org/drummer
  1:31pm Linda Lee:

yes! real women's voices, deeply seasoned. only chilling, maybe, because our media generally denies older women any substance at all.
Avatar 1:31pm Stork:

Thanks, Dougster. I keep meaning to post it, and fergittin.' It's a beaut! And it's displaying album covers for these tunes - and I didn't post 'em! What is this sorcery?!

Avatar 1:36pm Stork:

@Doug: looking at the popup player that i clicked on the new homepage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Doug Schulkind:

Ah I see. That pop-up player, with the LP covers, is not new, but it's superduper that the new home page links to it. So much easier to find than just going to the WFMU homepage!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Little Danny:

The popup player is tied to some online commercial music database. Its image display drives my obsessive-compulsive tendencies crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm doctorjazz:

I like the personnel listings on the home page.
Avatar 1:46pm Stork:

Always gotta fight back tears on this one.
Avatar 1:47pm Stork:

I don't see personnel listings directly on the new homepage, doc. You mean the stuff i put in the comments field on my playlists?
Avatar 1:47pm Dervish:

So brutally untrue for Nina. Same for the men in Billie's life, too.
Swag For Life Member 1:47pm spodiodi:

i thought the table view schedules were much more usable
Avatar 1:48pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Doug Schulkind:

@spodiodi
The table view schedule still exists. Click the "See Full Schedule" link at the bottom of the page.
  1:48pm Linda Lee:

what a fine tribute. her work was generally so strong, even when she wasn't well. she was that gifted.
i miss hearing her on piano only ~ as she wished to work; she was forced to vocalize to create a career. that's worth bearing in mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Little Danny:

@spodi: I like the landing page's schedule list, but there's a link to the olde table view at the bottom.

Speaking of adding over time, a new show will be joining the Drummer Stream. It will immediately follow The Stork Club and will début on April 4. We here at the Drummer Stream are over the moon about it.

yeah, chresti. i'd typed a comment about being excited to hear it again after the show. cool stuff, Stork.
Swag For Life Member 2:16pm spodiodi:

FOUR-ONE-FIVE or Four Fifteen? (guessing the latter, per Stork, but am ignorant)
Swag For Life Member 2:16pm spodiodi:

hear 4-1-5 all the time, but never 4-15
  2:17pm Dean:

Yeah, but I seem to recall that the refrain in the song "415 Music" is "four fifteen..."
Swag For Life Member 2:18pm spodiodi:

Swag For Life Member 2:23pm spodiodi:

Dean, thanks for that link -- bookmarked. i've never heard of any of the bands on the album art. will have to check it out.

Stork, you mentioned Four Fifteen records guests -- i'd never heard 415 (area code of SF) mentioned as Four Fifteen (always 4-1-5... so i had to ask. sounds like you had it right though (no surprise))

Lorraine Hansberry was a brilliant woman. There is a famous recording of her being interviewed by Mike Wallace (prior to 60 Minutes) and he is trying to push her toward a softer, less provocative stance on Black demands for equality. She ties the scumbag Wallace into a knot and discards him with grace and elan.
Avatar 2:24pm Stork:

Don't worry, adamdoesit, it'll always seem like Overtime with Stork: The Show.
Avatar 2:31pm Stork:

Is that Hansberry interview to be had, Doug? Gotta see that.
Avatar 2:32pm Stork:

I know the label, spodi but never knew how to say it.
Swag For Life Member 2:32pm spodiodi:

stepping away from the keyboard... in case i don't make it back in time before the end of the show, thank you Stork!
Avatar 2:37pm Stork:

Go with Coltrane, spodiodi. Come back soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Doug Schulkind:

Here is some portion of the Hansberry interview with Mike Wallace. From 1959. The audio is terrible and not at the right speed: youtu.be...

Here is an accurate description of the proceedings I found onlime:

"Wallace unpacks all of his RACIST, white-supremacy and Lorraine responds with hit-after-hit—out-of-the-park, crushing Wallace with EVERY REALISTIC ANALYSES of usa RACISM!!!"
Avatar 2:41pm TDK60:

Still here listening, Stork.
Avatar 2:44pm Stork:

Never figured Wallace for a white supremeacist, frankly, but he was certainly a routinely clueless putz of his day.
Avatar 2:45pm Stork:

TDK60: :))

Stopped for a healthy lunch (circulate chip scone and hamentashen, clotted cream, coffee, followed by microwaved frozen tortellini (with plastic wrap, while reading a Sunday Times article on endocrine disrupters. Thankfully don't have to worry about my sperm counts at this point). Loving the show...
Thanks, Stork!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm doctorjazz:

(I may have missed it, but I didn't hear any notice of Henry Threadgill's birthday (he was 77 on Feb 15). Hint Hint Hint...
Avatar 2:56pm HyperDose:

Thank you, Stork! Today's programming has been entertaining, educational, and soul cleansing. :)
Avatar 2:57pm Stork:

Thanks, HyperDose. This was a project to get truly lost in. So hard nt to include even more reams of stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm doctorjazz:

Avatar 3:12pm StringOFperils:

Wow, what a playlist to be able to summon up at will out of the archives. Nice job, Stork. Thanks a lot for compiling all this. Although, a wealth of source-material hardly even covers it.
Avatar 3:13pm Stork:

You said it, StringOFPerils. Just a toe-dip into the raging Sea of Nina.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm adamdoesit:

(Ok, so hamentaschen are for Purim, not Sukkot. So much for low-hanging fruit.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm doctorjazz:

@Doug, In Doug We Trust, I expect it to be another great addition (but how on earth will we ever get OTHER things done...???)
